- Chapter 93 - Flying Side by Side
The enormous Blood Leopard was still surrounded by many exorcists and monsters attacking it.
Seeing Lin Yanyu and the others approaching, the Blood Leopard suddenly swung its tail. Those monster attendants on its body hadn’t even reacted in time before being flung away. Even with the protection of the Qing Fang Ling barrier, the attendants still fell to the ground in pain, screaming incessantly.
“Run! Stay away from the Blood Leopard!” the exorcists shouted, quickly commanding their subordinates through the blood contract to get up.
But before they could retreat, a roar sounded behind them, making their brains buzz. This roar was different from the previous ones; those who heard it both exorcists and monster attendants collapsed, foaming at the mouth, and passed out.
Only Lin Yanyu and Qin Changxin remained unaffected. The four magical weapons Floating Axe, Wu Yuan Fan, Qing Fang Ling, and Wu Ling hovered around them, forming a protective circle.
Lin Yanyu had just regained her senses when she felt a shadow looming above. Before the Blood Leopard’s paw could strike, she quickly shrank the protective range of Qing Fang Ling, shouted, “Hold on!” and with a powerful leap, pushed the Blood Leopard away with her front paws.
Qin Changxin leapt into the air with her fan, landing on the cat’s back, and swung it downward. The swirling dark clouds around the Blood Leopard’s head parted, revealing its dark golden fur.
Before she could swing again, she felt her waist tighten. Looking down, she saw a spiritual rope wrapping around her, quickly pulling her onto the leopard’s back. In that split second, Lin Yanyu had dragged her back into the Qing Fang Ling barrier, just as the searing demon fire roared toward them.
Qin Changxin held the leopard’s neck tightly, looking up at the torrential demon fire.
In that instant, a flash of fear arose in her heart, stemming from memories of her previous life and awe of this power but it was fleeting. That fear was quickly pushed aside.
She was no longer fighting alone.
“I clearly gave you a chance to start over, so why interfere with my revival of Azhu?” After the demon fire subsided, the enormous paw struck the barrier. Two blood-red beastly eyes stared at them, filled with anger. “Azhu is far better at managing a city than that delicate princess. In this world, I only wish to fulfill my long-standing wish. I never intended to be your enemy, yet you have repeatedly sought me out!”
“Sounds nice!” Lin Yanyu propped the barrier and sneered. “The death of my mother eighteen years ago, the disturbances on Que Ling Island last month, and now, you dare to claim no connection? You even made my soul incomplete! And now that Zhuo Wansheng is in our hands, you start ‘reasoning’?”
“You naive child! These are all necessary sacrifices!” the Blood Leopard growled. “If the demon race wants freedom in the human realm, how can the strongest exorcists be allowed to live? As for you… half-demons with human blood like you should never exist! You should be grateful without me, you could never have cultivated into a demon!”
As soon as it spoke, the Blood Leopard suddenly leapt over the barrier and charged toward the city gate.
“He’s running into the city!” Lin Yanyu shouted while pursuing. “Send the talisman birds to Senior Zhuang and the others! We have to stop him!”
The Blood Leopard ran too fast, and the open plains outside the city made keeping up difficult. Lin Yanyu, flying at full speed, could barely maintain distance. Seeing this, she grabbed the Floating Axe, charged, and hurled it at the Blood Leopard.
The Floating Axe had a mind of its own; even when far from its owner, it could track targets. But the Blood Leopard’s prayer beads weren’t depleted, and the axe was deflected before it could reach the creature. No matter how many times Lin Yanyu tried, it couldn’t land on the Blood Leopard.
Qin Changxin released the message talisman birds and, holding the Wu Yuan Fan, swung at the Blood Leopard, aiming a wind blade mixed with Lin Yanyu’s demon fire at its legs.
Just as the wind blade was about to strike, the Blood Leopard’s massive body suddenly shrank. The blood-colored mist dispersed, revealing a leopard demon only slightly larger than a normal leopard but moving many times faster.
Seeing the Blood Leopard turn back and attack the city, the exorcists stationed outside cast spells to stop it. But the creature charged straight at the spellcasters. The blood mist surrounding it spread anyone caught inside immediately fell into an illusion, becoming mindless puppets attacking their allies.
Lin Yanyu quickly summoned Qing Fang Ling, pouring her demon energy into it and tossing it into the air. The green bell rang clearly, restoring some clarity to those affected.
Though Qing Fang Ling belonged to Feng Funing, Lin Yanyu lacked the exorcist cultivation of Yin Tan-tier exorcists. Those who heard the bell regained some consciousness but could not fully free themselves from the Blood Leopard’s control. They merely hesitated, dropping weapons and pausing their spells.
Fortunately, only lower tier exorcists were affected. High-level exorcists immediately deployed their own awakening tools and powders, rescuing comrades from the illusion while blocking the Blood Leopard from entering the city.
Knowing the Blood Leopard’s “Puppet Thread Technique” worked best on the unconscious, the exorcists couldn’t render those caught in the mist unconscious without losing manpower. Even with the city gate’s defense array activated, the Blood Leopard could break it easily.
Lin Yanyu recalled Qing Fang Ling, placed Qin Changxin safely, and dove after the Blood Leopard. She pounced on its back, hoping to pin it to the bridge with her strength. But the Blood Leopard was faster. When it leapt and spun around, Lin Yanyu felt the world tilt her back slammed onto the bridge, just inches from her throat, which was already under its sharp claws.
Without Qing Fang Ling, this strike would have cut her neck.
Lin Yanyu held her breath and focused. The Floating Axe appeared above the Blood Leopard, slashing down. The beast used its prayer beads to block the attack, increasing claw pressure. “Crack!” The wooden planks of the suspension bridge splintered under it. It pressed against Lin Yanyu’s abdomen, further breaking the bridge as she fell toward the moat with the debris.
Determined not to let it succeed, Lin Yanyu extended her wings, kicked off the riverbank, and aimed for the city gate. Just as she got close, she threw Wu Ling, which transformed into a jet black blade aimed at the Blood Leopard’s neck.
The Blood Leopard turned and spat demon fire. Lin Yanyu maneuvered Wu Ling to avoid it and summoned Qing Fang Ling to shield the exorcists and attendants.
However, she could feel her demon energy running low. Sustaining Qing Fang Ling already consumed much of it. If the Blood Leopard spat fire again, she wouldn’t be able to maintain the barrier.
“Clang!” The Wu Ling flying at full speed was intercepted by the Blood Leopard’s beads. Before it fell, a man’s hand caught it.
Xiao Xianyi, now in human form, floated outside the city wall. Dressed in dark robes, he looked down at Wu Ling in his hand and smirked. With a squeeze of his fingers, he intended to crush it, but a sword’s resonance reached his wrist, forcing him to loosen his grip. Wu Ling spun in midair and returned to Lin Yanyu.
“You can wield this sword?!” Xiao Xianyi was shocked. Before he could question Zhuang Jingwei’s identity, haunting flute music made him dizzy.
Feng Xianchen arrived, standing shoulder to shoulder with Zhuang Jingwei, playing attentively.
Xiao Xianyi glanced at Qin Changxin, wielding her fan at the gate, eyes sharp and murderous. Exorcists and attendants gathered around. Suddenly, he laughed.
No one understood, and Qin Changxin and Lin Yanyu gave him no chance to speak. Fans swung, claws struck they attacked simultaneously.
But Xiao Xianyi did not dodge. They didn’t even see him move. Blood mist surrounded him again, blocking Wu Yuan Fan and claws.
“Unbelievable! Mere ants dare force me to this point!” Xiao Xianyi grinned, twisted. “If it were Xuan Qing and Feng Funing today, I’d hesitate. But you… are nothing!”
He suddenly spread his hands. The dense blood mist scattered.
“Puppet Thread Technique! Spread out!” Zhuang Jingwei shouted, stepping back. “Anyone who inhales the mist will fall under his control!”
Lin Yanyu summoned the Floating Axe, creating a wind vortex to draw the mist toward her.
The axe, forged from the horn and bones of a demon dragon, loved to absorb murderous energy. Xiao Xianyi’s breath was a gourmet feast for it.
But for Lin Yanyu, it was unbearable. Soon, the chaotic voices, cries for mercy, and blood-soaked screams made her nauseous.
These illusions didn’t scare her. What terrified her was the possibility of seeing Qin Changxin’s illusions, hearing her voice, and watching her… stop breathing in her arms.
Thinking this, all sounds in her mind twisted into a single tone
Changxin was crying.
Changxin was screaming.
Changxin was mourning.
Changxin was praying.
She tried to stop herself from imagining, but it was too late.
To prevent losing control while purifying the mist, and harming others, Lin Yanyu transformed into human form, grasped the Floating Axe, and jumped into the city moat.
“Yanyu!”
“Lin Yanyu!!”
Falling, she heard Qin Changxin’s hysterical cries probably just another illusion.
She soon fell into the icy moat. With Qing Fang Ling’s protection, the water didn’t wet her skin or clothes but she knew it wouldn’t last. Her demon energy was nearly gone, barely enough to resist the illusions, let alone sustain the barrier.
Qin Changxin’s voice filled her ears, growing louder. Her reflection appeared in the water.
Lin Yanyu forced herself to close her eyes, ignoring the sounds. But two arms wrapped around her, and a familiar voice replaced the rest.
“I’m here with you.”
She heard Qin Changxin softly speak, then felt a gentle kiss.
Her demon energy depleted, Qing Fang Ling dissipated, yet pure spiritual energy flowed into her body continuously.
She greedily absorbed it spiritual energy, fresh air, the closeness of softness.
No matter what, it was what she desperately needed.
Eventually, the embrace loosened.
Lin Yanyu heard Qing Fang Ling’s clear chime. Opening her eyes, she saw Qin Changxin shaking it. Around them was a deep green, presumably underwater, but a faint blue aura shielded them safely.
In a daze, she seemed to see Qin Changxin’s eyes turn blood red.
