- Chapter 92 - Fierce Battle in the Suburbs
At the announcement, chaos erupted immediately.
The demon hunters all knew that a demon’s strength is at its weakest and strongest when its true form is revealed the more powerful the demon, the more destructive its true form.
“Stay calm! The Blood Leopard has already dispelled the ‘Silken Binding Array’ to gather spiritual energy and transform!” Fortunately, the Lord of Lianzhou was present. Upon hearing this, he immediately gave orders and reinforced the defensive array on the ground with his True Yuan. Only then did the demon hunters gradually regain their composure.
“What is that?!” someone shouted, pointing at the sky. “A giant cat!”
Everyone turned to look. A huge black cat with heterochromatic wings spread wide in the air, and on its back stood a female Purple Dawn class exorcist wielding a fan.
“It’s the Young Lord of the Demon Realm!” the lord exclaimed. He immediately ordered, “Exorcists with demon attendants, step forward! Those who follow the Young Lord to fight the enemy will each receive a reward of one hundred gold coins, and afterward may stay in Handan City as officials!”
With such a rich reward, brave volunteers quickly stepped forward. Nearly twenty exorcists presented themselves. With the lord’s permission, each commanded their demon attendants to manifest their true forms and help them enlarge their demon forms.
Transformed into a giant cat, Lin Yanyu carried Qin Changxin, soaring toward the forming Blood Leopard.
The imposing Blood Leopard stood atop the ruins of houses. Floating beside it were eighteen beads, each the size of an adult’s head. Around its neck was a pouch tied with demonic energy, from which an orange cat tail dangled looking ridiculous, but both knew it was the Demon King Zhu WanSheng, a crucial figure for Xiao Xianyi.
Before the Blood Leopard’s demon form fully solidified, Lin Yanyu breathed out demon fire while Qin Changxin first tried illusions. When the illusions proved ineffective against the fog formed Blood Leopard, she switched to a thunder spell. The exorcists and demon attendants following them copied their attacks, and a rainbow of spells and demonic techniques rained upon the Blood Leopard.
Yet the Blood Leopard remained like a colossal Buddha, unmoving. Its beads blocked all attacks on their own. Amidst the relentless assault, only Lin Yanyu’s demon fire scorched its fur; the rest of the spells caused no real damage.
“Its true body isn’t the entire demon form,” Qin Changxin said gravely. “What we see is likely just protective demonic energy.”
Lin Yanyu was about to ask further when the Blood Leopard’s hind legs suddenly crouched for a powerful strike. Feeling unease, she quickly raised the Qing Fang Bell barrier.
“Retreat!” Lin Yanyu shouted. “Don’t get carried away!”
As soon as she spoke, the Blood Leopard roared. Its sound waves shattered the spiritual energy sustaining the Qing Fang Bell.
Exorcists and demon attendants who hadn’t yet reached the barrier were hit by the sound waves, dizzy and staggered, some even bleeding from the seven orifices, falling down. Demon hunters below caught them with spiritual nets and carried them away on stretchers.
“Look at that forest!” Qin Changxin closed her fan and pointed to the distant trees, where startled birds flew away. “He’s summoning reinforcements at least a hundred beasts!”
“That’s not a demon gathering place, is it?” Lin Yanyu asked.
“No, just the suburbs,” Qin Changxin replied, expression serious. “I don’t know what illusion he used, but he hid this area for eighteen whole years!”
“We’ll fight him there!” Lin Yanyu shouted. “Use wind spells to push him away! We cannot let those beasts approach the city!”
Qin Changxin nodded and called out, “Everyone! Lend me your wind spells!”
Though unfamiliar with each other, the trained exorcists immediately complied, combining their spells with their demon attendants.
Qin Changxin leapt from the cat’s back atop Lin Yanyu’s laid spiritual currents, enlarging her Wu Yuan Fan and performing rapid hand seals. The air around her surged.
Exorcists wielding fans followed her lead, merging their wind spells into a powerful tornado in no time.
The Blood Leopard lunged at them, striking the Qing Fang Bell barrier with a paw. Lin Yanyu felt the force transmitted into her arms, nearly making her cough blood.
Exhaling, she met the Blood Leopard’s murderous gaze. Changing her hand seals, the spiritual energy of the barrier heated rapidly, and demon fire surged toward the Blood Leopard.
The barrier didn’t resist allies Lin Yanyu learned this after taking a hit from Feng Xianchen. Only her demon fire could harm the Blood Leopard. As the fire approached, the Blood Leopard jumped back, preparing to return to midair.
A thunderclap sounded. Qin Changxin, aided by demon fire, cast a fine blue lightning at the Blood Leopard’s head.
It dodged, the lightning grazing its neck, piercing its protective energy and scorching some fur.
Though unhurt, the pouch around its neck burned away, and the orange cat inside fell.
“Ah Zhu!!” the Blood Leopard roared in anger, clawing to catch it. Meanwhile, the exorcists’ tornadoes had now formed and, following their combined commands, flung the Blood Leopard toward the suburbs without allowing it to attack.
The falling orange cat was gently caught by Lin Yanyu and floated down safely.
The Lord of Lianzhou, still on the ground, saw the cat and quickly leapt with his sword to catch his daughter, now possessed by the cat demon.
“Chase the Blood Leopard!” he ordered. “You just handle the enemies. Handan City will be defended by the remaining forces!”
Lin Yanyu spread her wings, dissipated her demon fire, and, protected by the Qing Fang Bell barrier, pursued the Blood Leopard with Qin Changxin.
As she left the city gate, a series of beads flew toward her. Each impact shook her body violently.
Lin Yanyu endured silently, preparing to deal with the beads when a sword’s chime rang behind her. A flash of white pierced three beads lined up in a row, destroying them before returning in midair—it was Zhuang Jingwei’s sword!
Startled and delighted, Lin Yanyu turned just as someone landed on her back.
“Xianchen will follow you protect her!” Zhuang Jingwei, temporarily strengthening her heart meridian with magic, caught the flying sword, flicked off Zhu Sha on it, and wielded another sword toward Qin Changxin.
Feng Xianchen had just regained human form and held her white flute. Lin Yanyu said, “Perfect timing! Help me gather spiritual energy!”
The flute’s sound revitalized the exorcists and demon attendants, making their internal energy flow smoother.
Lin Yanyu, guided by the music, formed gathering arrays, channeling spiritual energy to everyone in the area.
The Blood Leopard roared in front, enraged that Zhu WanSheng had fallen into enemy hands. It tore through the whirlwind with a swipe, and the forest beasts it summoned charged like a wave toward the departing exorcists.
The remaining fifteen beads, now each human height, resisted the exorcists’ spiritual swords, which could only penetrate halfway, unlike Zhuang Jingwei’s one hit destruction.
Seeing this, Zhuang Jingwei distanced herself, channelling energy into her heirloom sword. Once all runes glowed, she thrust, shattered the bead, released the sword, and used energy to destroy it from within.
Qin Changxin returned to the cat’s back, wiping her palm on the Wu Yuan Fan, letting blood splash on the metallic peach blossoms. The fragrance spread as she waved the fan, casting illusions over the charging beasts.
The fan’s illusions depend on the user’s power. But boosted by the flute and gathering arrays, Qin Changxin expanded the illusions nonstop, putting over twenty beasts into a dreamlike state in seconds.
The battle was still too close to the city. Some exorcists ordered their demon attendants to attack the Blood Leopard.
Protected by the Qing Fang Bell barrier, the demon attendants collided with the Blood Leopard, knocking it from midair toward the suburbs.
However, beasts not trapped in illusions immediately attacked exorcists outside the barrier. Controlled by the Blood Leopard, every beast went berserk, biting and tearing. Some slower exorcists were killed instantly.
A tiger demon bit an exorcist’s leg, stepping on him, preparing to tear his throat, when a massive cat paw struck it.
“Senior Sister Zhuang!” Lin Yanyu shouted. Zhuang Jingwei flew on her sword toward the tiger demons to attack.
“I’m coming too!” Feng Xianchen jumped onto Zhuang Jingwei’s sword and played a calming tune on her flute.
“Capture the leader first, then deal with the rest! Let’s go!” With them departing, Lin Yanyu said, carrying Qin Changxin, and flew toward the Blood Leopard.
