- Chapter 75 - Using Their Own Trick Against Them
Two days later, in the young master’s bedchamber.
It was Qin Changxin’s birthday, and Lin Yanyu got up very early to go to a nearby pond with the best water quality to catch shrimp and fish.
The fish and shrimp in the demon realm’s waters were full of spiritual energy, making their meat plump and flavorful. Following Xuan Lin’s memory, Lin Yanyu found a spot where fish and shrimp often appeared, opened her net, and used the bait she had prepared in advance. In no time, she caught a net full of green shrimp and two grass carp of just the right size.
She carried the shrimp and fish back to her residence and headed straight to the kitchen, greeting Mei Linghan, who was preparing breakfast, and quickly separated and prepared the seafood. She removed the heads from the shrimp, peeled them, deveined them, and washed them clean for later use, while the grass carp could wait, so she kept them in a wooden bucket.
“Lin’er, are you planning to cook personally?” Mei Linghan asked curiously as she placed a basket of pastries on the steamer.
“Yes, today is Changxin’s birthday, and I want to do something for her,” Lin Yanyu smiled and skillfully chopped scallions and ginger, then mixed them with flour and the prepared shrimp, “For breakfast, shrimp pancakes; for lunch, sweet and sour fish; and for dinner, grilled fish fillets.”
“All meat for all three meals?” Mei Linghan laughed. “Humans have weaker stomachs, and that girl is a light eater and a demon hunter. Don’t make it too hard for her!”
Lin Yanyu nodded. While chatting, she had already expertly seasoned the batter.
When she lived with her master in the past, they rarely ordered takeout and often took turns cooking all three meals a day. Because cats would shed fur if they consumed too much salt or sugar, Lin Yanyu’s master always made light meals for her when she was young. She had eaten them so often that she gradually learned to cook this way. Even after reaching cultivation levels that prevented fur loss, she didn’t change the habit.
Not long after the shrimp pancakes were in the pan, Qin Changxin came to drink some warm tea to start her day. Stepping into the kitchen, she was immediately hit by a faint fishy smell, soon overpowered by the sharp aroma of scallions and ginger, and then by the irresistible scent of cooked shrimp.
Unable to resist, Qin Changxin followed the aroma to Lin Yanyu’s side and peeked into the pan.
“Good morning,” Lin Yanyu greeted her without looking back. “Just a moment, the ‘Birthday Special Shrimp Pancakes’ will be ready soon.”
She flipped the sizzling shrimp pancakes in the pan, sending another wave of aroma straight to Qin Changxin’s nose.
“Shrimp pancakes?” Qin Changxin was surprised. “I didn’t know shrimp could be cooked like this.”
“This is actually a very simple method; I only know this simple way of handling shrimp.” Lin Yanyu quickly plated the pancakes, adjusted the presentation slightly with chopsticks, and placed two fresh mint leaves on top before serving them to Qin Changxin. “Here you go, try it while it’s hot?”
Qin Changxin usually drank tea before breakfast, but she couldn’t resist the enticing smell. She took a pancake, blew on it slightly, and took a bite.
“The shrimp is so tender!” she exclaimed, reaching for a second piece before long, and soon finished the entire plate.
“Eat slowly, have some porridge too, don’t choke.” Lin Yanyu brought over two bowls of plain porridge and sat with her.
“I didn’t expect Lin’er to learn cooking during your trip to the human realm,” Mei Linghan brought two small side dishes for the porridge, praising her generously. “Xuanqing should see this too!”
Lin Yanyu was about to sip the porridge when she remembered and quickly asked, “Mother, are you feeling better these past two days?”
“Much better, who could blame her, it’s Feng Funing!” Mei Linghan said helplessly. “Even if Feng Funing lost her memory and can’t speak, just a smile makes her happy as a fool.”
“She may be foolish, but I’m not,” said Xuanqing, entering with Feng Funing in hand, scolding Mei Linghan playfully.
The amnesiac Feng Funing blinked, seemingly understanding Xuanqing’s words, and reached for her swaying tails.
Next moment, Xuanqing groaned as her cat ears folded. “I was wrong, I was wrong! Let’s talk this out, don’t touch the tail!”
Feng Funing pointed at her lips, shook her head, but still ran her hand along the tail against the fur.
“Ancestor Feng!” Xuanqing whispered in surrender, all dignity lost.
Lin Yanyu and Qin Changxin were stunned. Mei Linghan, however, laughed and scolded, “Flirting in the bedchamber isn’t enough? In front of the young ones, behaving like this!”
“You touched my tail first…” Xuanqing protested, approaching in a pout.
“That’s because you talked too much,” Mei Linghan scolded, shoving a hot biscuit into her arms.
Lin Yanyu laughed, noticing Feng Funing glancing at her, and put down her bowl to roll up her sleeves, picking up the remaining half bowl of shrimp. “Mothers, want some shrimp noodles?”
After serving her mothers with shrimp noodles, Lin Yanyu returned to sit opposite Qin Changxin and noticed two pancakes left on the plate.
“Even cold, it still tastes great.” Qin Changxin complimented as she took a piece and offered it to Lin Yanyu. “Delicious, make them for me next birthday too?”
“Of course,” Lin Yanyu smiled. “Your birthday comes at the perfect time; next year, the shrimp will be plump, and I’ll bring you to the demon realm to eat.”
After breakfast, Qin Changxin helped wash the dishes and discovered the two grass carp in the bucket.
“They are the same as the shrimp, freshly caught,” Lin Yanyu explained. “For lunch, I plan to make sweet and sour fish, but if you prefer salty, I can do braised fish or pickled fish instead.”
“Do all cats know how to handle fish like you?” Qin Changxin asked curiously.
“Of course not; her mother certainly doesn’t,” Mei Linghan replied. “Not only can she not cook, she can’t even gut a fish properly. She always couldn’t find the gall and would pierce the wrong part, leaving the fish bitter.”
Even Xuanqing wasn’t present, and Lin Yanyu couldn’t help but laugh. She casually asked, “Then how would Xuanqing mother celebrate Feng Funing’s birthday?”
“Usually by catching lots of prey, birds and beasts alike, and laying them out bloodily, making Feng Funing watch. She never did anything like you!” Mei Linghan recalled. “When showing off, she’d say the prey was fierce and dangerous, but they were all tamed beasts from the forest. Feng Funing saw plenty of animals but didn’t realize.”
Lin Yanyu felt the silver Tan mark on her finger heat up for a few seconds perhaps Feng Funing’s spirit within it was blushing.
Although it was Qin Changxin’s birthday, they still studied new spells. After chatting with Mei Linghan, they returned to the study with freshly brewed tea.
As usual, Lin Yanyu closed her eyes to meditate, appearing before Feng Funing’s image, ready for the day’s challenge. Yet Feng Funing waved her sleeve and dismissed her: “Go accompany your partner for their birthday!”
Exiting the illusion, Lin Yanyu was still dazed, looking at the silver Tan mark and laughing at herself.
Facing Qin Changxin’s bewildered gaze, she explained honestly, “I was driven out by Senior Feng Funing’s memory; it seems she thinks celebrating your birthday is more important than studying spells.”
Qin Changxin murmured in surprise, “How could that be…”
“It’s understandable. I inherited not only Senior Feng Funing’s memories but also her will,” Lin Yanyu said calmly, standing up. “We’ve studied enough; it’s time to relax. Come, I’ll take you to the place where we caught the shrimp and fish.”
Qin Changxin followed hesitantly, and Lin Yanyu suddenly held her hand.
“Don’t hesitate! The air there is great; you’ll love it!” Lin Yanyu quickened her pace, but Qin Changxin stopped her with a strong hug.
“I… I have a bad feeling. Can Senior Feng Mingchi come with us?” she asked softly.
Lin Yanyu’s smile faltered. “Are you worried that Yang Hengyu or Xiao Xianyi might use the Huxing Sword to sneak into the demon realm, control you, and kill me in isolation?”
“Yes,” Qin Changxin lowered her gaze, worried. “Sorry for spoiling your fun…”
“Don’t blame yourself; caution is good.” Lin Yanyu guided her back. “I’ve been careless. We haven’t contacted Feng Xianzhen these days; we don’t know where those two scoundrels are or if they’ve appeared in Lianzhou.”
She stopped and whispered to Qin Changxin, “We seem to have overlooked something. Since Yang Hengyu and Xiao Xianyi want to kill us, even sneak into the demon realm, why not turn the tables and lure them out?”
Feng Mingchi, who had been studying the rejuvenation formula provided by the demon lord, put down his work to accompany them.
“You fear the Huxing Sword. Lin’er once thought of a way to counter it,” Feng Mingchi started. “But before it could be implemented, the demon attack escalated uncontrollably. She sacrificed herself to prevent more casualties.”
Lin Yanyu blinked and exchanged a glance with Qin Changxin. “Actually, based on mother’s memory, I thought of a way to counter it.”
“Oh? Let Uncle hear it,” Feng Mingchi said.
“Just grab the sword and break it,” Lin Yanyu said in her sweetest voice, but it was a brutal solution.
Feng Mingchi: “…A simple and crude plan. But how do you know where the ‘Blood Leopard’ hid the Huxing Sword?”
“We don’t need to know,” Qin Changxin said. “It will be delivered to us.”
