- Chapter 43 - Biting Cat Ears
Qin Changxin should have gone for the kiss.
From all the picture books she’d read, that was how things were supposed to progress between lovers.
But when she saw the cat in her arms with a blush creeping over her face, those startled cat ears folding down, and remembered that Feng Xianchen was still watching from the side
she suddenly grew shy.
Pressing her lips together, she closed her eyes and leaned down.
Lin Yanyu also instinctively shut her eyes, shrinking her neck timidly.
Two soft lips brushed down
but only landed on her forehead, pressing lightly through her hair.
Like a dragonfly touching water.
Lin Yanyu’s neck flushed red, but Qin Changxin really stopped there
just that one kiss,
and not even on the lips.
Afterward she moved away and gently rubbed the cat’s ears.
A strange wave of disappointment rose in Lin Yanyu’s heart.
Luckily, her eyes were still closed, so the little girl couldn’t see it.
Yet even that feather light kiss was enough to startle Feng Xianchen, who had been watching cautiously.
Before Lin Yanyu could even open her eyes, she hurried over and pulled Qin Changxin away.
Lin Yanyu, both embarrassed and disappointed, turned back into her black-cat form and dove under the tea table, wishing she could crawl into a box and hide.
The girl wasn’t even of age yet
how could she… how could she wish for the girl to take the initiative with her?!
Meanwhile, once Feng Xianchen confirmed that her sister wouldn’t lash out at her, she dropped the sound barrier, put a hand on Qin Changxin’s shoulder, and asked seriously:
“Did you forget the story of my mother and her demon bodyguard?”
Of course Qin Changxin remembered.
It was precisely because she remembered that she chose silence.
Feng Xianchen hardened her expression, imitating Zhuang Jingwei’s stern tone:
“My sister is the demon realm’s young master. You signed a master servant blood contract to stay with her in the human realm that’s one thing. But you can’t be with her like that…”
“I know my boundaries,” Qin Changxin interrupted quietly. “When I signed that contract, I decided to spend my life with her. A master servant bond lasts forever, and for the servant, it’s especially unfair. I can’t just ignore her.”
“I know, but… you don’t have to pretend to act out a romance…”
Feng Xianchen trailed off when Qin Changxin’s gaze grew sharp. She immediately shut her mouth.
“Why would you think I’m only pretending for her?” Qin Changxin asked after a pause. “Do I seem like that kind of insincere person?”
“No! I never thought that! I just…”
Without Zhuang Jingwei there to back her up, Feng Xianchen lost all courage.
Faced with Qin Changxin’s quiet intensity, she shrank against the wall like a kitten that had just broken a teacup and was waiting to be scolded.
If she had cat ears, they’d definitely be folded right now.
Seeing this, Qin Changxin couldn’t help remembering Lin Yanyu earlier.
The two sisters really were alike.
She sighed softly, reached out to ruffle Feng Xianchen’s hair, and said gently:
“I have my own plan. Don’t worry. Your sister and I will get along just fine we won’t repeat the past.”
Feng Xianchen nodded meekly.
“I… I do want to believe that. But my mothers…”
“If Xiao Xianyi was involved back then,” Qin Changxin said, “then there must have been more to it. The Demon Lord served Feng Funing for years. Even if he was reckless and proud, he wouldn’t have torn open the boundary between realms in a fit of anger.”
That calmed Feng Xianchen a little.
Thinking it over, she glanced toward the screen behind which Ye Yaozhi was hiding.
“That maid said earlier that the Demon Lord admitted it himself Xiao Xianyi loved using others as his chess pieces. He was the one who started the war.
But aside from him, no one alive no human, no demon understands his nature or powers anymore.”
She paused, voice dimming:
“My uncle once told me he suspected Xiao Xianyi used some spell to control the Demon Lord, but I didn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe Xiao Xianyi killed my mother, then just vanished, without ever being punished. How could he escape so easily?!”
“So you thought it must’ve been the Demon Lord protecting him? Or that the Demon Lord himself was to blame?” Qin Changxin asked quietly.
Feng Xianchen lowered her head and didn’t answer for a long time.
At last, she bowed deeply.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have doubted before learning the truth.”
While the two of them spoke inside the sound barrier, Lin Yanyu couldn’t resist peeking up to read their lips.
She was afraid Feng Xianchen might lash out like Zhuang Jingwei had though honestly, her half-demon sister didn’t have that kind of courage.
But after reading their lips, Lin Yanyu’s expression grew grave.
She’d read the original story.
In that story, Xiao Xianyi had never talked much about the past,
and the tragedy of her two mothers was never explained.
The author had said she would write a “past lives” side story after the main novel ended but she died before posting it.
So Lin Yanyu never learned whether her mothers would’ve been included.
Still, combining Qin Changxin’s reasoning with what she remembered of Xiao Xianyi’s powers, she realized it was possible.
Because she knew Xiao Xianyi had a rare mental spell the Thread-Pulling Technique.
It was a form of puppet art, but it didn’t just control a person’s body it could twist perception itself, amplifying or warping emotions according to the caster’s will.
A terrifying spell.
Not even the main characters, nor the Demon Lord who knew Xiao Xianyi best, had ever heard of it.
It was his ultimate trump card.
At this point in time, Lin Yanyu might be the only one who knew about it.
While she was lost in thought, she suddenly met Qin Changxin’s gaze and, startled, shut her eyes, curling her tail tight around herself.
Hearing soft footsteps approach, she decided to pretend to sleep.
No one can wake a cat pretending to sleep.jpg
Qin Changxin crouched down, watching the “asleep” black furball.
She really couldn’t wake Lin Yanyu
but she did know how to make her squirm.
When Lin Yanyu didn’t hear any words for a while, she grew curious and started to crack an eye open
only to be scooped up suddenly.
Then she felt her ears sink into something warm and wet,
soft touches brushing lightly over their tips.
Lin Yanyu nearly exploded
her fur stood on end, her mind went blank,
and she stopped thinking altogether.
If she wanted to keep pretending to sleep, she’d have to endure this delicious, brain-melting tingling.
Then something slightly sharp grazed her ear
the tingling turned into a faint pain,
the kind cats actually like
the girl really had perfect control of her strength.
This is sinful, Lin Yanyu thought weakly.
She couldn’t fake it anymore.
Her eyes snapped open, ears twitching back as she let out a flustered series of “mew mew mew” sounds half protest, half embarrassment.
On impulse, she leaned forward and licked Qin Changxin’s cheek with her rough, barbed tongue.
Qin Changxin froze her face suddenly prickly, itchy, and wet all at once.
Flustered, she grabbed the cat by the scruff, cheeks red, and set her on her lap at arm’s length.
Before Qin Changxin could say anything, Lin Yanyu spoke first, deflecting:
“My sister didn’t bully you, did she?”
“No,” Qin Changxin said with a small laugh, lowering her voice. “With Senior Sister Zhuang gone, she wouldn’t dare.”
Lin Yanyu looked over at the obediently seated Feng Xianchen and nodded knowingly, also lowering her voice:
“I asked Ye Yaozhi for some advice earlier. I was just… trying to take things a little further.”
“Why ask her?” Qin Changxin asked, puzzled. “She’s no different from us. Even if she and Yang Hengyu had something, she’s forgotten it now.”
“She’s six years older than me she knows more,” Lin Yanyu said, tail swishing as she recalled.
“Actually, all those picture books were chosen by her! You know how few books there are in the demon realm finding decent ones is nearly impossible!”
At that, Qin Changxin instantly remembered what kind of “picture books” those were.
This time she didn’t blush red, but her ears did turn faintly pink.
“Then earlier… if Feng Xianchen hadn’t interrupted, what else did you plan to do?” she asked suddenly.
“I…” Lin Yanyu froze.
She and Ye Yaozhi had only talked about hugging nothing beyond that.
Anything deeper would have crossed into “not suitable for early stage relationships.”
And after that forehead kiss, Lin Yanyu was certain she was the one who embarrassed more easily.
If anything did happen, she’d probably just lie down and surrender.
Until she was truly ready, she wasn’t letting that happen.
Of course, those thoughts never reached her lips.
After a brief silence, she quickly pulled out her ultimate excuse:
“I don’t plan on doing anything more for now. Otherwise, Senior Sister Zhuang would kill me when she gets back.”
Qin Changxin wasn’t disappointed.
She stroked the cat’s fur with a faint “mm,” and asked nothing more.
They waited until dusk, when Zhuang Jingwei finally returned with reinforcements over a dozen demon hunters.
“The Academy’s contacted other groups guarding Sparrowfeather Island. We can now move deeper in and find the island master,” she said briskly. “By the way did that pigeon come looking for you?”
“She said she was going to find the island master. We didn’t want to wait at Baoniao Gorge, so we came back here,” Qin Changxin replied.
“Good. You did right to stay. Wherever the ‘Blood Leopard’ appears, danger follows.”
An elder demon hunter at the Purple Epiphyllum rank nodded.
“Now that we have enough people, Jingwei, rejoin your squad. Let’s split up and move out!”
Zhuang Jingwei bowed in acknowledgment and led her team flying back toward Sparrowfeather Island.
After a while, she suddenly called back over the wind:
“While I was gone did anything happen?”
Feng Xianchen jolted in panic, instantly feeling three gazes Lin Yanyu’s, Qin Changxin’s, and Ye Yaozhi’s land on her.
Zhuang Jingwei’s back was still turned.
Feng Xianchen could only lie through her teeth:
“N-no! Nothing at all! I was watching them the whole time!”
“Really?” Zhuang Jingwei narrowed her eyes. “Your speech is too fast. Your voice is trembling. You’re lying.”
Feng Xianchen: “…”
She spread her hands helplessly toward the others, as if to say
Don’t look at me! It’s not my fault! Senior Sister’s just too sharp!
