- Chapter 42 - A Step Further
The matter was serious. After asking a few more detailed questions, Yu Mao collected the relics of her clansmen, turned into a white dove, and hurried back to find Island Lord Que Ling.
Two quarters of an hour passed, but Zhuang Jingwei still hadn’t returned.
Ye Yaozhi had already filled in the ditches with soil and sat behind Lin Yanyu, awaiting orders.
Feng Xianchen grew restless. After waiting another quarter of an hour, she finally stood up and said, “You all go find the Island Lord I’ll go look for Senior Sister Zhuang.”
She feared Zhuang Jingwei had been captured by Xiao Xianyi, though there was no solid proof the man was still on the island.
“It’s best if we move together,” Qin Changxin said, pulling her back. “I’m worried about Senior Sister Zhuang too. Let’s go together.”
Zhuang Jingwei had left on her personal sword her life bound weapon. The flying sword that could carry multiple people was still with Feng Xianchen. Hearing this, Feng immediately summoned the sword and took everyone aboard, flying toward the liaison point of the Kuixuan Academy.
However, when they arrived, the building was empty, and outside, only traces of a recently used teleportation array remained.
“Did Senior Sister Zhuang go back with that senior?” Qin Changxin frowned.
Feng Xianchen gripped her sword, closed her eyes to sense, and nodded. “Her presence is gone from here. I’d guess that senior set up the teleportation array and brought her along.”
“Then we should see the Island Lord first,” Lin Yanyu proposed. “We need to contain the spread of the poison we can’t waste time!”
Even though it wasn’t yet time for the main plotline to unfold, she couldn’t stand the thought of innocent demons dying because of another’s ambition.
Qin Changxin and Feng Xianchen nodded in agreement, but Ye Yaozhi lowered her gaze in silence.
“Young Lord, I once heard the Demon Lord speak of this man,” Ye Yaozhi said when she noticed Lin Yanyu’s look. “The Demon Lord said that Xiao Xianyi loves chess whether on a board or using demons as his pieces. Since the island’s demons are already killing one another and the Island Lord hasn’t stepped in to stop it, could it be that he’s either allowing it… or has already been poisoned, losing his mind and becoming one of Xiao Xianyi’s ‘pieces’?”
Her reasoning made sense, and Lin Yanyu fell silent in thought.
“So, by going to the Island Lord, we might be walking right into a trap?” Qin Changxin asked.
Ye Yaozhi nodded. “Maybe we should return to Hundred Birds Ravine and wait for Yu Mao. If the Island Lord is fine, she’ll come back with news.”
“I’d rather wait here for Senior Sister Zhuang!” Feng Xianchen protested. “That place reeks of blood even if you filled the ditches, I don’t want to go back there…”
Qin Changxin felt the same, but she glanced at Lin Yanyu instead of siding with Feng, waiting for her to decide.
With Zhuang Jingwei gone, Lin Yanyu was the team’s center of gravity. But her thoughts were a mess. Emotionally and logically, she wanted to follow the clues on Que Ling Island to find Xiao Xianyi and understand why she had transmigrated.
Yet she also knew it was still early in the main storyline too soon to act rashly. And as a single cat, she wasn’t about to go confront Xiao Xianyi herself.
The more anxious she got, the more her tail twitched by the fifth flick, someone caught it. A shiver shot through her whole body.
“Yanyu, something on your mind?” Qin Changxin asked softly, gently pulling Lin Yanyu into her arms.
The motion was so natural that Feng Xianchen and Ye Yaozhi both froze Feng looked frustrated she couldn’t separate them, and Ye Yaozhi looked quietly pleased.
Lin Yanyu instinctively leaned into the embrace and sighed. “Having thoughts won’t help! I promised you I wouldn’t go after Xiao Xianyi for revenge what’s said by a cat can’t be taken back.”
“In that case, why not rest for a bit?” Qin Changxin brushed her chin against the cat’s ear. “We’ve been rushing nonstop. Back in Bamboo Prefecture City, you were always worried about my lack of sleep.”
Since she had no other plans for now, Lin Yanyu nodded. “Alright.”
The group entered the quiet chamber and shut the door to rest.
Ye Yaozhi, who’d been running nonstop, had reopened her wounds. She’d managed to hold out, but once inside, she retreated behind a screen to treat herself.
Worried about infection, Lin Yanyu brought medicine and bandages over to help her.
But Ye Yaozhi panicked the moment she saw her, snatching the supplies. “Young Lord, you already have a wife you mustn’t personally tend to my wounds!”
Lin Yanyu nearly dropped the medicine at the word “wife.” Afraid Feng Xianchen might overhear and tell Zhuang Jingwei later, she immediately set up a sound barrier and hissed, “You mustn’t call her ‘wife’ in the human realm!”
“Why not? I don’t understand,” Ye Yaozhi blinked innocently. “You’ve never let anyone, human or demon, touch you. Since childhood, you swore to remain pure for your future wife to touch no one until you found your beloved. Don’t you remember?”
Lin Yanyu: …
That was the original host’s vow what did that have to do with her, a transmigrated cat?
Still, since she’d decided to pursue a romance with Qin Changxin, she could only bluff her way through. “Of course I remember! But this is the human realm there are strict customs here. You only call someone your wife after marriage. Even joking about it beforehand is disrespectful. Understand?”
Ye Yaozhi suddenly looked enlightened and nodded. “Understood, Young Lord.”
Lin Yanyu breathed out in relief but there was something else she wanted to ask.
Though Ye Yaozhi seemed a bit slow, she was six years older and had lived her whole life in the demon realm under the personal tutelage of the Demon Lord. Surely she’d know a thing or two about romance?
Taking advantage of the sound barrier, Lin Yanyu asked boldly, “If I want to get closer to that human, what should I do to deepen our intimacy?”
Ye Yaozhi blinked, looking at her hands.
She seemed to have done something similar before, though she couldn’t quite remember what.
Still, a question from her Young Lord demanded a serious answer. After a moment of thought, she said, “Human women love soft, furry things. You could let Lady Changxin pet your beast form.”
“What if she’s already done that?” Lin Yanyu asked. After all, she already knew that trick.
“Well…” Ye Yaozhi thought again. She remembered that her Young Lord had let Qin Changxin hold her from their very first meeting, so clearly that method was old news. After a long pause, she said, “Then… do similar things in human form instead. Replace petting your beast form with holding hands, touching faces, or rubbing her back. And instead of hugging your beast form… do what Lady Changxin did just now embrace her?”
Something about it still felt off, but she couldn’t figure out what. Her instincts told her to stop there if she said more, her Young Lord might get angry. So she simply gave Lin Yanyu an encouraging look.
Feeling somewhat reassured, Lin Yanyu dropped the sound barrier and went back to sit beside Qin Changxin.
Qin was resting, but the moment she sat down, she discreetly hooked a finger around hers.
Remembering Ye Yaozhi’s advice, Lin Yanyu took the initiative to grasp her hand. When her fingertip brushed the girl’s palm, she felt the faint tremor that ran through her body then Qin’s hand opened, interlacing their fingers tightly.
Ten fingers entwined it should have been a sweet moment. But Lin Yanyu felt… nothing.
That wasn’t right. She should feel something! The girl was clearly opening up more to her, and yet she felt no spark at all.
Growing anxious, she tried to recall Ye Yaozhi’s next suggestions. Seeing Qin’s expectant eyes on her, she raised her other hand
and cupped the girl’s face, rubbing it like one would pet a puppy.
Qin’s delicate features immediately squished out of shape. She puffed her cheeks and looked at her in surprise.
Before Lin Yanyu could react, Qin murmured “Don’t fool around,” caught her wrist, and pulled her hand away.
Lin Yanyu: ???
Lowering her hand, she glanced at their still clasped fingers and started to think things through.
Okay. So she didn’t like having her face rubbed. That meant back rubbing and hugging were next on the list.
With Zhuang Jingwei away, it was the perfect time to experiment. She placed a hand on Qin’s back, tracing along her spine with just the right amount of pressure.
As a cat, Lin Yanyu loved when Qin did this to her it always felt heavenly. Surely Qin would enjoy it too.
But Qin stiffened, uncertain what the gesture meant. Was Lin Yanyu helping her “relax”… or silently criticizing her posture?
After a moment’s thought, she decided it must be the former perhaps the cat was afraid she’d gotten jealous while talking privately with her maid. So she said softly, “I’m not jealous.”
Lin Yanyu: …?
“What are you jealous of?” she asked, baffled.
“I…” Qin started to reply, but catching Feng Xianchen’s resentful gaze, she swallowed her words and simply repeated, “I’m not jealous.”
Lin Yanyu: ???
Good heavens, what was the girl imagining now?
According to Ye Yaozhi’s “guide,” after the back rubbing came a hug but Lin Yanyu remembered they’d already hugged earlier, multiple times even. Repeating the same gesture would lose its charm.
Thinking fast, she changed tactics she took Qin’s hand, turned it upward, then gently lifted both of Qin’s arms and placed them around her own neck.
The moment Qin’s hands brushed the soft skin of her nape, realization dawned Lin Yanyu wasn’t upset or jealous; she simply wanted a hug to soothe her mood.
So Qin tightened her hold, pulling the cat into her arms. Tilting her head down, she found Lin Yanyu’s face right before her eyes.
Lin Yanyu hadn’t expected them to end up this close. Frozen for a heartbeat, her gaze accidentally fell on Qin’s slightly parted lips.
When the girl slowly began to lean down, Lin Yanyu’s cat ears folded flat, her whole body trembling not sure whether it was from nerves or anticipation.
Surely… surely she wasn’t actually going to kiss her?!
