- Chapter 35 - Coming Out in Public
Lin Yanyu saw the wound and immediately knew that the bird claw was poisoned.
So after sucking the blood to clear the poison, she rinsed her mouth right away, then washed the wound thoroughly with plenty of clean water, forcing out the toxins that had already entered the meridians.
“Do you have any antidote powder?” Lin Yanyu asked.
Qin Changxin thought for a moment, then summoned a small medicine bottle and handed it to her: “Only antidote pills.”
Lin Yanyu took one out and pinched it, noticing it was a honey pill. To apply it to the wound, it would need further preparation, so she returned it and said, “Then just take the medicine directly.”
Qin Changxin obediently swallowed the pill. While Lin Yanyu bandaged her, Qin Changxin suddenly asked, “Will Ye Yaozhi be poisoned?”
“That depends on her luck,” Lin Yanyu replied without looking up. “If these bird demons use poison to temper their bodies, probably their whole body is poisonous.”
Lin Yanyu really didn’t want to mention that traitorous big gray wolf. After answering indifferently, she focused entirely on bandaging the little girl.
Unexpectedly, Qin Changxin said, “Those who cruelly kill demons must be punished. If they run away out of guilt, getting poisoned is a lesson for them.”
“You think quite clearly,” Lin Yanyu was a bit surprised. She had thought the little girl was asking about Ye Yaozhi to speak up for her.
But on second thought, Ye Yaozhi and the little girl currently had little interaction—no favors, only resentment. Moreover, Ye Yaozhi had become a lifelong loyal demon attendant of Yang Hengyu, so no matter what, the little girl wouldn’t side with her.
After finishing the bandaging, Lin Yanyu said, “Change your clothes. Your blood probably contains poison; don’t let it touch your wounds.”
Qin Changxin tried moving her arm but felt it limp and powerless. She quietly asked, “Can you help me change?”
Lin Yanyu agreed and quickly removed the bloodstained clothes, leaving only the bandages.
Qin Changxin instinctively hugged herself, but only for a moment before loosening her grip, straightening her back, and looking at Lin Yanyu seriously and expectantly.
Lin Yanyu held the clothes and turned back, seeing the little girl sitting with a serious expression and eyes full of hope. Her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly draped the clothes on her.
“Reach out, hurry and put it on, don’t catch a cold,” Lin Yanyu said helplessly with the classic “straight girl triple move,” since it was winter and she really feared the girl would get cold.
But as Qin Changxin dressed, Lin Yanyu, afraid of disappointing her, bit her lip and suddenly wrapped her arms around the little girl from behind, clasped her hands in front, and rested her head on Qin Changxin’s shoulder.
She felt the girl tremble but remain still, letting her hold and lean on her.
The two fell into silence for a long while before Qin Changxin asked, “Why did you suddenly hug me?”
“No special reason. Just wanted to,” Lin Yanyu decided and whispered into her ear, “What were you thinking when you came over to lie beside me at midnight?”
She wanted both herself and the little girl to be well. Since they would never be apart for a lifetime, she would slowly learn to love this little girl, so she could feel safe accepting her care.
Her hint was immediately understood by Qin Changxin. Lin Yanyu soon saw her ears blush, and not long after, her hand was gently covered by the girl’s.
“You must know the reason,” Qin Changxin said firmly. “I want to know, tell me.”
Lin Yanyu hesitated no more. Her intuition told her that if she missed this chance, it would be a long wait.
She chose her words carefully and explained, “Actually, it’s not that I don’t understand, just that I’m afraid you’ll be scared of my true nature and then avoid me.”
She still held Qin Changxin’s neck, turned to face her, and looked seriously into her eyes. “No matter whether we have a master-servant blood pact or not, I don’t want to leave you. You can call it love at first sight or just stubbornness, but I won’t leave.”
Hearing this, Qin Changxin was instantly moved and nodded, “Okay,” pulling Lin Yanyu into her embrace.
“I’m not afraid of you,” she said seriously and solemnly, “You are the kindest demon to me, different from the others.”
“Hmph, that’s because you haven’t seen me get serious,” Lin Yanyu chuckled and muttered, “If I really got serious, I wouldn’t be any better than Yang Hengyu and the others… But don’t worry, since I’m your demon attendant, no matter who I fight, I’ll get your permission first.”
Qin Changxin saw Lin Yanyu’s cat ears twitch from time to time while speaking and couldn’t help but reach out to rub them, causing Lin Yanyu to shut up and nuzzle her head against Qin Changxin.
“You’re really bold. We’ve only known each other a few days, and you’re already confirming our relationship. Aren’t you afraid I’ll run off after taking you and then drop you?” Qin Changxin teased.
“You won’t,” Qin Changxin said firmly, “You’re not that kind of cat.”
Lin Yanyu wanted to joke more, but faced with the girl’s sincere and pure eyes, she swallowed her words and gently nudged her in her arms.
She wasn’t the original owner, so naturally, she wouldn’t lead the girl on and then leave her.
The two held each other like that until a knock came at the door, and Lin Yanyu reluctantly let go, helping Qin Changxin lie back down and seriously instructing, “You’re poisoned. Rest more. I’ll go check.”
Actually, it was because the clothes weren’t properly worn yet and there was no time to fix that.
After tucking the little girl in, Lin Yanyu went to open the door.
Several unfamiliar Azure Step Exorcists stood outside. Seeing a demon open the door, they were momentarily stunned.
“My master is resting. What matters should I pass on?” Lin Yanyu blocked the doorway and asked.
“Oh, it’s like this. The group of bird demons that attacked the city tonight are wanted criminals. We’ve taken them away. The city lord wants to thank you for your timely assistance and sent us to deliver the reward,” the leader said quickly, showing a storage pouch.
Lin Yanyu took the pouch and thought over the main storyline, then couldn’t help asking, “Any clues about where these bird demons came from?”
“Not clear yet. We’ve been investigating too,” the exorcist sighed. “In the past month, Ningzhou has faced three demon attacks twice in villages on the outskirts and today even daring to infiltrate the city. So reckless!”
“How did so many get into the city? Have you found out?” Lin Yanyu frowned.
“That’s something you outsiders better not ask about,” the exorcist shook his head. “Anyway, we’ll get to the bottom of it. We must be going now.”
“Just leaving like this? Is that appropriate?” Lin Yanyu sensed something off. “Those bird demons are mutated. My master was injured while capturing them and is poisoned and resting now. You won’t even give us a chance to uncover the truth?”
Though Qin Changxin hadn’t dealt with the demon attacks in Ningzhou, soon after, the liaison from Kuixuan Academy stationed on Que Ling Island lost contact. Then an internal conflict broke out among the feather demons there.
If Qin Changxin and her group hadn’t arrived in time to kill the lost Que Ling Island Lord, this war among demons might have spread to the human realm.
Que Ling Island is within Ningzhou’s jurisdiction. Though far from the city, flying there would only take three to five days.
From the exorcist’s casual words, Lin Yanyu guessed that the bird demon attacks probably originated from the Que Ling Island conflict.
The Ningzhou exorcists didn’t expect to be questioned by a demon attendant and immediately grew haughty, saying righteously, “So what? Even if you are exorcists from Kuixuan Academy in Yunzhou, without an official mission token, you’re just passing through Ningzhou city and have no right to intervene!”
“Lives are at stake. If we had to get the token before coming back, casualties would increase!” Lin Yanyu said firmly.
“Enough with the ‘lives at stake’ talk!” the exorcist raised his voice. “In the end, this is a human matter. It’s none of a lowly demon attendant’s business!”
“Enough!”
Before Lin Yanyu could respond, a sharp voice came from behind.
Qin Changxin quickly stepped forward, shielding her and glared coldly at the exorcist. “Show some respect. She is my daolü!”
Her words stunned Lin Yanyu. The exorcists widened their eyes. Seeing Qin Changxin wearing the purple Azure Step Exorcist uniform and Lin Yanyu as a black cat demon, they grew flustered and hurriedly left.
Closing the door, Qin Changxin instantly lost her imposing aura, silently letting Lin Yanyu help her back to bed.
Lin Yanyu was at a loss for words. She thought tonight they’d only subtly confirm their relationship but didn’t expect the little girl to come out so directly and in doing so, she kicked the door wide open.
Sitting back on the bed, Lin Yanyu stared at the little girl blushing behind a folding fan, and after a long moment said with a trembling voice, “I’m not angry, don’t be afraid.”
She looked calm on the surface but inside was a scared little animal: coming out unexpectedly in public is hardly something anyone can be calm about!
Especially in front of strangers!
Lin Yanyu felt her heart pounding so hard it seemed ready to jump out. She’d been single for 23 years and never thought love would publicly “execute” her like this.
Qin Changxin almost buried her face in the fan, biting her lip. “You’re angry, right? I was too impatient, I…”
“I know. You can’t stand hearing them speak like that about me.” Lin Yanyu’s irritation quickly faded. After hearing that, she felt as if her heart were being scratched by cat claws uncomfortable but also strangely joyful.
After all, the little girl spoke up to defend her and spoke in haste.
After some thought, Lin Yanyu moved the fan aside, put her arm around Qin Changxin’s shoulders, and calmly said, “Although demon attendants and their masters becoming daolü isn’t unusual, you’re not an adult yet, so we can’t call ourselves ‘daolu,’ right?”
Qin Changxin stared blankly at her, then nervously gripped the fan. “Then, what should we call each other?”
“In the dating stage, demons call each other ‘girlfriend,’” Lin Yanyu started bluffing, “Or you could ask Feng Xianchen and the others…”
“Girlfriend sounds good!” Qin Changxin quickly cut her off, seemingly a bit shy to tell her two companions.
“Okay then, my girlfriend,” Lin Yanyu smiled and pinched her ear lobe. “But you don’t plan to tell them, do you?”
“They… probably already guessed to some extent. Whether I say it or not makes no difference,” Qin Changxin said, lowering her gaze.
“Still, you should tell them. After all, they are your companions, and you have a good relationship with them, right?” Lin Yanyu reminded her. “Sharing ‘sweet troubles’ with companions is also a kind of trust!”
