- Chapter 34 - Warm Cat’s Care
Lin Yanyu belatedly realized that the little girl might have been spoiled by her sketchbook.
In the original story, Qin Changxin was very aloof and cold. No matter what methods the original protagonist used to coax her, she always maintained her true self and firmly refused to yield.
But now, she never thought of coaxing the little girl at all instead, the little girl had developed many mischievous thoughts.
Coming back to her senses from shock, Lin Yanyu decided to teach the little girl a lesson. She lightly flicked her tail on the girl’s hand and deliberately scolded, “Pervert, what are you doing!”
Qin Changxin smiled faintly. When Lin Yanyu was putting her tail away, she raised her hand and virtually stroked it from front to back.
Lin Yanyu was ticklish and almost jumped, fluffing up her fur. Instinctively, she raised her paw to hit her hand, but before the claws could land, Qin Changxin caught her paw.
She immediately retracted her claws, afraid of scratching the little girl.
“A pervert is naturally flirting with a ‘good family cat,’” Qin Changxin said seriously while rubbing Lin Yanyu’s paw pads.
Lin Yanyu’s feelings were complicated. Feng Xianchen burst out laughing, unable to catch her breath, while slapping Zhuang Jingwei’s shoulder, “Senior sister, this is the first time I’ve heard Changxin say something like this, hahaha!”
Zhuang Jingwei smiled and covered Feng Xianchen’s mouth, then pulled her close and whispered in her ear, “Changxin is shy; don’t disturb her.”
The four chatted and laughed as the flying sword headed toward Yunzhou.
From Zhuzhou to Yunzhou, it takes ten days by horse carriage, or five days using a flying artifact.
However, the group was not in a hurry. Since Zhuang Jingwei was physically weak and needed frequent rests, they stopped at towns along the way and traveled slowly. After three days, they finally arrived at Ningzhou City, the closest city to Zhuzhou.
Lying on the couch at the Ningzhou inn, Lin Yanyu hugged the soft quilt, turned over, and looked at Qin Changxin lying on another couch with great satisfaction.
The main storyline was finally about to start. Although the timing was a bit early, the little girl hadn’t turned dark, and Lin Yanyu had safely left the “starter village” of Zhuzhou with her. They were accompanied by two strong core supporting characters, and everything was going smoothly.
Lin Yanyu closed her eyes with comfort, but before she could fall asleep, she felt the couch gently shake and then warm breath brush her face.
Opening her eyes, she met Qin Changxin’s gaze.
The little girl was only wearing a plain white sleep robe, just lying beside her, uncovered.
Afraid she might catch a cold, Lin Yanyu quickly spread the quilt and pulled her in.
“You came over without a sound?” she murmured. “What if I was really asleep? Who would have covered you?”
Qin Changxin didn’t answer but shrank her limbs a little awkwardly. Lin Yanyu then hugged her tightly to her chest. Her breathing suddenly quickened.
Cats have a fire element constitution, meaning they have a high body temperature. In this winter month, she was like a small stove, warming others.
“You’re growing up, little girl,” Lin Yanyu couldn’t help but tease, “A few days ago, when I had you come to my couch to set a blood contract, you blushed from embarrassment and misunderstanding. Now you’ve learned to come to me on your own. Come on, tell me honestly how many sketchbooks have you read?”
The room was very dark, but Lin Yanyu could still see the red flush spreading across the little girl’s cheeks, thanks to the cat clan’s night vision.
“You’re not angry?” Qin Changxin whispered.
“What’s there to be angry about? You’re almost an adult. It’s perfectly fine to look at these sketchbooks,” Lin Yanyu touched her hand, feeling it was a bit cold, so she grabbed and warmed it. Then she asked casually, “By the way, when do humans usually get engaged or married?”
“Eighteen,” Qin Changxin answered after a moment of silence. “But before that, love and courtship are allowed. Only that my master was hurt by love, so since childhood, she warned me not to give my true heart away too early.”
“Your master is right,” Lin Yanyu agreed, “My master… my mother said the same.”
“Your mother…” Qin Changxin hesitated. Thinking about how this cat also grew up in a caring-deficient environment, she felt a pang of sympathy.
“All right, let’s not talk about this,” Lin Yanyu patted her back. “We have to travel early tomorrow. Sleep now.”
“You’re not asking me why I suddenly came over?” Qin Changxin asked hurriedly, seeing her close her eyes.
“I couldn’t sleep, needed a cat companion, and was cold,” Lin Yanyu said with closed eyes. “I’ll believe whatever you say.”
“If… I don’t know why either, I just wanted to ask you,” Qin Changxin said. “There are many ways to solve insomnia; no need to come over like this.”
She paused, then looked down shyly, “But I don’t know why, I just wanted to.”
Lin Yanyu was troubled. She didn’t know whether to be honest now or make up an excuse.
She thought that if they were to fall in love, the other party also had to be aware; otherwise, it would be like cross-frequency chatting, with mismatched brainwaves, and could hurt the other.
But now, the little girl had opened her heart to her. If she didn’t respond properly, she would disappoint her.
She was about to gather courage to confess when suddenly an unnatural piercing scream came from outside the window, followed by four or five more.
“A demon attack!” Lin Yanyu blurted out immediately, a reflex from years of demon hunting.
She quickly threw off the quilt, sat up, and opened her eyes to see Qin Changxin flipping off the bed. Somehow relieved, she also got up and quickly put on the magic robe placed by the pillow.
“Preliminary judgment: they are bird like demons, about five in number,” Lin Yanyu analyzed the situation while dressing. “Attack their wings first to cripple their mobility, then capture them alive to ask why they attacked the town. If there’s a mastermind behind, that one must be dealt with too.”
Qin Changxin instinctively agreed. She had once accompanied her master on a demon hunting mission, and her master had given the same instructions.
Before Qin Changxin could ask more, Lin Yanyu jumped out the window, controlling the spiritual energy at her feet to fly toward a bird demon flying into the sky.
Her new magic robe was dark blue, making her hard to notice at night. By the time the bird demon noticed her, one wing was already broken by her palm strike. The demon screeched and tried to peck her eyes.
Lin Yanyu dodged calmly, struck the other wing to break it, then summoned a spiritual binding rope, quickly tying the bird demon. She lifted it like a chick and descended to the ground.
The bird demon looked like an egret, with pure white feathers but sharp talons of a bird of prey. Even bound by the rope, it was unruly, opening its beak to curse.
“Damn cat demon! You’re ruining our good deeds!”
“What good deeds? Tell me.” Lin Yanyu pulled a villainous smile. “But if you lie to me, I’ll eat you.”
Perhaps scared by other cat demons, the bird demon shivered, then curled its neck and said, “Not saying! Saying or not, it’s death either way! Not saying!”
“Fine.” Lin Yanyu didn’t push further and cast a sleeping spell on it, then went to find Qin Changxin.
At that moment, three bird demons were attacking shops on the street, but Lin Yanyu quickly saw Qin Changxin and the others, each fighting a bird demon. They separated the demons to take them down one by one.
Lin Yanyu climbed to the roof of a low building with the bird demon. As she prepared to survey the whole situation, she suddenly sensed a change in the wind and quickly dodged aside.
A row of tiles was blown off by wind blades, crashing noisily to the ground. Fortunately, pedestrians and merchants had been evacuated by the demon hunters responding to the alert, so the tiles only damaged some goods.
Looking up toward the source of the wind blades, she heard a clear and melodious flute sound breaking the night’s silence.
On the inn’s roof stood a woman in dark clothes playing the flute. A bright red sandalwood Buddhist bead bracelet on her left wrist swayed with the wind, dazzling to the eyes.
As the flute played, the bird demons tangled with the three warriors all fell painfully to the ground. One fell into a shadow and tried to escape but was suddenly bitten by a gray wolf that pounced and tore it apart.
The blood smell spread quickly. Qin Changxin and the others frowned.
“Yang Hengyu is on the inn’s roof,” Lin Yanyu said as she approached the three warriors, “This one knows something; we must keep it alive. Who should keep it?”
“Give it to me,” Zhuang Jingwei said, still catching her breath. “I can’t move vigorously. Feng Xianchen, you take the other bird demons. Changxin, you all go to the roof to check the situation.”
Lin Yanyu handed over the bird demon and followed Qin Changxin, flying up to the inn’s roof on the No Regret Fan.
The enemies were already captured, but Yang Hengyu was still playing the flute. When they arrived, Ye Yaozhi was behind Yang Hengyu holding a half-dead bird demon, blood on her mouth and white fox fur.
“Why is Sister Hengyu here?” Qin Changxin asked sternly.
Yang Hengyu stopped playing, squinting with peach blossom eyes, and sneered, “We’re all demon hunters. Even a fool like you can hunt demons. Why can’t I?”
She reached out to stroke Ye Yaozhi’s hair and wolf ears.
“Why only half eaten?” she clicked her tongue, looking at the bloody bird carcass in Ye Yaozhi’s hand. “Poor appetite?”
“Yaozhi was afraid they would harm you,” Ye Yaozhi said, her wolf eyes fixed tightly on Lin Yanyu.
“Torturing demon beasts and demons is forbidden for demon hunters!” Qin Changxin warned sternly, “If Sister Hengyu wants to be a demon hunter, she must remember the rules!”
“Are you blind? That was my demon attendant,” Yang Hengyu snorted. “She’s not a demon hunter.”
Lin Yanyu observed the bird demon from afar and said calmly, “These bird demons are mutated, fused with predatory egret genes. Aren’t you afraid of eating them?”
Yang Hengyu didn’t understand “genes,” but she immediately grasped the meaning, frowned after looking at the bloodied bird carcass, and ordered, “Put it down. Let’s go.”
“Wait!” Feng Xianchen’s voice came from below. She appeared before Yang Hengyu and Ye Yaozhi, speaking harshly, “Demon hunters and demon attendants are one! If demon attendants torture demons, demon hunters must be punished too! Follow me”
Before she finished, Lin Yanyu grabbed her collar and pulled her back.
Seeing the vicious scars left by the wind blade where she had stood, Feng Xianchen’s face changed dramatically. Her anger flared as she shouted, “You dare kill me?!”
“They’re all crazy; what don’t they dare do?” Lin Yanyu said coldly, still holding her collar, watching Yang Hengyu and her follower leave completely before saying, “You all go down. I’ll clean up this corpse.”
The group returned inside the inn. The interrogation was handed over to the experienced Zhuang Jingwei and Feng Xianchen. Lin Yanyu and Qin Changxin went back to their rooms to change out of their bloodied clothes before the demon hunters arrived for questioning.
Lin Yanyu disliked seeing blood when capturing demons. The blood on her clothes was from handling corpses. Qin Changxin, however, was injured, with two bloody scratches on her arm from bird claws.
Though a Purple Lotus rank demon hunter, Qin Changxin lacked combat experience and failed to notice the claws’ mutation in time.
After Lin Yanyu took off her outer robe, she went to stop Qin Changxin’s bleeding.
“Next time before attacking, make sure to observe first,” Lin Yanyu said as she parted the bloodied clothes and gave instructions, “If you encounter such mutated demons and aren’t confident, come find me. I can handle them.”
Qin Changxin bit her lip in pain but didn’t speak, only nodding firmly.
The next moment, Lin Yanyu bent down and pressed her lips onto the wound, sucking hard.
The warm lips on her arm made the skin tingle. Qin Changxin felt the tingling spread through her body, a warmth blossoming from her heart.
The care and tenderness she had dreamed of finally came from a cat, generously given without hesitation.
