- Chapter 75 - Second Star System, Planet AR5
How is she alive? Didn’t the Zou family cremate her?
Ding Moyan’s legs froze in place as she instinctively opened the system panel. The scan showed no information about this person.
When she pulled up Zou Ye’s original profile, it was marked as deceased.
Ding Moyan steadied her emotions, focusing her gaze on the black-clad figure’s neck.
The skin was slack, the needle marks on the neck had turned dark brown, and behind it, near the gland, was a long, ugly scar.
Ding Moyan murmured, it was indeed Zou Ye. But that scar on the gland made her think of the Beta-to-Omega experimental subjects.
Mo Tang stepped forward, handcuffing the black-clad figure and snatching the phone away.
She dialed the police.
Zou Ye’s appearance pushed the situation to an even deeper level of complexity so much so that Ding Moyan’s brain was nearly overwhelmed.
Restlessness, unease, instability these emotions flooded her entire being.
Her thoughts were interrupted as the sound of a vehicle pulling up echoed from the alley entrance. Ding Moyan turned and saw the parked car.
A wine-red hover car.
Ding Moyan spotted a familiar figure stepping out of the vehicle.
Ye Ye looked in their direction, her lips parting in a sweet smile. “Ding Moyan, Officer Mo, we meet again.”
Mo Tang turned at the sound, her expression as stern as ever. “Miss Ye,” she greeted.
She was deeply suspicious of Mo Tang.
“What brings you here, Miss Ye?”
Ye Ye: “Came for a meal. Just happened to run into you.”
Mo Tang: “Oh, what a coincidence.”
“Right? Sister Moyan and I always seem to cross paths.” Ye Ye skipped over and wrapped her arms around Ding Moyan’s.
Ding Moyan lowered her gaze. The sweet, soft Omega pressed close made her extremely uncomfortable. “Let go.”
Ye Ye shook her head, humming lightly. “No, no, no.”
“Wang Ye.” Ye Ye’s gaze landed on the restrained figure. After a moment of scrutiny, she theatrically covered her mouth. “She’s still not dead? But why isn’t she speaking? Did she turn mute?”
Ding Moyan suddenly looked down, realizing Zou Ye hadn’t made a single sound the entire time she was being apprehended.
Mo Tang narrowed her sharp eyes, silently observing her.
Ye Ye’s eyelid twitched, but she met the gaze with an unyielding smile.
Wee-woo, wee-woo!
The police car arrived quickly. Officers stepped out and took Zou Ye into custody. Just as Mo Tang was about to board the car,
She paused, glancing back. “Miss Ye, Second Star System, AR5, correct?”
Mo Tang’s words left Ding Moyan baffled.
Ye Ye lazily lifted her eyelids, half-leaning against Ding Moyan, her smile thick with meaning. “Perhaps. After all, the most dangerous place is often the safest.”
Inside the apartment.
“Zou Ye isn’t truly alive. Theoretically, she’s half-dead.”
Ye Ye’s throat was parched, she hadn’t had a sip of water all morning, and her lips were slightly chapped. She poured herself a glass of warm water to soothe them.
“Experimental resurrection of the deceased. Experts proposed and conducted this experiment long ago. Unfortunately, the subjects became mute, obedient zombies.”
“Zou Ye is a failed product.”
Ding Moyan sat quietly beside her, legs pressed together, listening intently.
“Besides that, I also noticed something else when I went back this time.”
“Do you remember A-329?” Ye Ye asked.
Ding Moyan: “Mm.”
“Lan Bo·Kleia, one of its developers, was also the expert professor who proposed the revival theory and experimental modifications,” Ye Ye continued. “My father met this man a few years ago. He was someone utterly obsessed with science, life, and creation so much so that he might even sacrifice his life for a critical experiment.”
“In his eyes, things were only divided into important and unimportant. Zou Ye’s case might very well be his handiwork.”
“Moreover, this expert professor was Old Mrs. Ding’s prized student. Your grandmother was also one of the researchers involved in A-.”
“The President has a tracker implanted in her. I learned in Kailina that the President’s last known location was at the Ding family’s main residence. Given the President’s special status, she often encounters unexpected dangers. To prevent such incidents, the tracking chip is embedded in her gland. The signal won’t disappear unless she dies.”
Seeing Ding Moyan remain silent, Ye Ye raised an eyebrow. “So you already knew about this, huh?”
“How about you go back home and take a look?”
As soon as Ye Ye finished speaking, a message from Ding Bai coincidentally popped up on Ding Moyan’s phone. She glanced at it indifferently, her interest in anything from the Ding family clearly waning.
But this time was an exception, it was the second time they had sent this particular message.
The atmosphere shifted abruptly. Curious, Ye Ye craned her neck. “What is it? What did you see?”
“Ding Yue is getting engaged. Ding Bai sent an invitation.”
“Oh, that unscrupulous younger brother of Ding Bai is getting engaged? I got one too.” Ye Ye rummaged through her phone and showed Ding Moyan the message.
A mischievous idea sparked in Ye Ye’s mind. She nudged Ding Moyan’s shoulder encouragingly. “Come on, let’s go on an adventure.”
Ding Moyan closed her eyes briefly, still preoccupied with what Mo Tang had mentioned to Ye Ye before leaving. She asked, “What does ‘Second Galaxy AR5 Star’ mean?”
“Second Galaxy AR5 Star, the planet abandoned by the gods, also known as the Dead Star.”
Ye Ye’s eyes flickered. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “The reason for its abandonment was an explosion caused by improper laboratory operations. This incident further mutated the planet’s flora and fauna and even affected many surrounding planets. Thick fog drifts over the Dead Star, and the air is saturated with dangerous reagent fumes. Without a protective mask, one’s blood would boil, their head would throb with fever, they’d retch blood, and within minutes, they’d bleed from all orifices and die.”
“That planet is the only one completely cut off from signals.” Finally, Ye Ye added, “If the President’s signal suddenly vanished, barring death, she might be there.”
At the Ding family’s main residence in the southern district’s Fourth Courtyard.
“Sis, do you think this engagement outfit looks good?” Ding Yue held up the custom-made dress delivered by the boutique, posing with it in front of himself.
“Looks fine,” Ding Bai replied, biting into a pastry as she gave it a cursory glance.
“See? I told you my taste is impeccable. I look so handsome.”
The Ding family head snorted in displeasure, slamming his thermos onto the stone table. “Your taste? Go dye that green mop of yours back to black. What kind of look is that?”
Ding Yue pouted, ruffling his bright green hair. Just as he was about to retort.
The courtyard gate was suddenly flung open with a loud bang, cutting him off. Everyone in the yard turned toward the commotion.
“Ding Moyan?!”
“What are you doing here!” Ding Yue’s voice rose sharply, though he instinctively hid behind Ding Bai’s back.
It was no wonder the young master, who usually strutted around the Ding family’s main residence with arrogance, was acting so cowardly. Just the thought of being utterly crushed by Ding Moyan in that alley made his back teeth ache.
At the same time, a surge of anger pressed against his chest. It was supposed to be a grand occasion, why had this jinx shown up?
Was she here just to mess with him?
“…” The head of the Ding family felt a pang in his heart, nearly choking on his fury. He clutched his chest, glaring at his green-haired son. What a troublemaker.
He had gone to great lengths to use Old Lady Ding’s authority to invite Ding Moyan here. He couldn’t let Ding Yue ruin everything, or the old lady would never stop nagging him.
The Ding family head barked, “Ding Yue, are you rebelling? Call her ‘sister’ now.”
Ding Yue snorted disdainfully, emboldened by Ding Bai and his omega standing beside him. “What kind of sister is she to me?”
The Ding family head and Ding Bai’s expressions darkened.
Meanwhile, the subject of their conversation showed no trace of anger. Arguing with a fool was just a waste of her intelligence. Having a brother like Ding Yue must be torture for Ding Bai.
“It’s fine. I’m just here to look around. Whether he calls me ‘sister’ or not doesn’t matter,” Ding Moyan shrugged, indifferent to the whole affair.
Right now, her priority was to use the System Panel to see if she could uncover any information about the Experimental Subject or the President now that she was at the Ding residence.
Seeing that his daughter showed no signs of storming off in displeasure, the Ding family head relaxed slightly.
Ding Moyan’s refusal to engage only emboldened Ding Yue further. Convinced she was intimidated by his backup, his insults grew cruder.
“Ding Yue.”
A deep, authoritative voice cut through his tirade.
Ding Yue froze mid-taunt, his body stiffening. His neck creaked as he turned his head stiffly.
Alphas and omegas generally had longer lifespans and aged more gracefully.
Old Lady Ding was dignified and elegant. Though wrinkles lined her face, one could still glimpse the beauty of her youth.
Beta turned omega, one of the early Experimental Subjects, Number Thirty-Six.
Ding Moyan stared at Old Lady Ding’s face, momentarily stunned.
“Mo Yan.” Only when the old lady spoke did Ding Moyan snap out of it.
Blinking, Ding Moyan called out, “Grandmother.”
Old Lady Ding beamed, nodding as she slipped the jade bracelet from her wrist and handed it to her granddaughter.
Ding Moyan hesitated. “This!”
“Mother, what are you doing?!” The Ding family head exclaimed in shock, stepping forward to intervene.
“Mo Yan is no longer a child. It’s time she took on some responsibility for the family’s business,” Old Lady Ding said dismissively, sliding the bracelet onto Ding Moyan’s wrist.
“Look, how lovely it suits her.”
“Thank you, Grandmother.” Ding Moyan forced a grateful smile, though inwardly, she was screaming. That bracelet was nothing but a shackle, binding her to the Ding family.
She had no intention of inheriting anything. Forget the scheming branches of the Ding family, just dealing with them would be a nightmare. And she had zero patience for such things.
Ding Bai stood to the side, her face tense. Her fingers anxiously twisted the fabric of her new dress. Unlike Ding Yue, who was too clueless to understand the bracelet’s significance, she knew exactly what it meant.
Releasing her clenched fingers, Ding Bai glanced down at the crescent-shaped marks her nails had left on her palms.
Even her omega father wore a stormy expression, his gaze dark and unreadable as he stared at Ding Moyan.
The burgundy hover car pulled up outside the large iron gate.
Inside the car, Ye Ye rubbed her calm cheeks, her soft lips pressing together nervously. For the first time in her life, she felt at a loss.
She was about to meet Ding Moyan, and on top of that, Ding Moyan’s grandmother, father, and who knows who else.
Ugh, how embarrassing.
Wasn’t she here for official business? Why was she getting so flustered? Where was her usual confidence?
“Why are you covering your face, Ye Ye?” Yu Sisi urged. “Get out of the car already.”
A few seconds later, noticing Ye Ye’s increasingly flushed cheeks and the way she nervously bit her lip clear signs of tension and shyness Yu Sisi suddenly understood. She chuckled, raising an eyebrow. “Oh, don’t tell me. Let me think of the right word for this. A bride meeting her in-laws for the first time?”
“Shut up.”
Watching Ye Ye’s flustered reaction only made it more amusing. Yu Sisi smirked. “Aww, did I hit the nail on the head? Look at you, all worked up.”
Yu Sisi’s occasional teasing always left Ye Ye defenseless. Rolling her eyes, Ye Ye shot back with a dry, “Hmph.”
Then, with nervous precision, she straightened her clothes, making sure everything was flawless.
Puffing out her cheeks, she exhaled and pressed the button to open the hover car door.
The door slid upward, and Ye Ye stepped out alongside Yu Sisi.
Ding Bai, having received word of their arrival, relaxed her expression and walked to the front courtyard.
“Ye Ye, Yu Sisi.”
Yu Sisi responded politely, “Ding Bai.”
Beside her, Ye Ye nodded, her round eyes darting toward the inner courtyard, searching for her target.
Ding Bai’s lips twitched. “She’s in the inner courtyard.”
“Mmm… Can we go there?” Ye Ye rubbed her hands together, grinning sweetly as she nudged her old friend.
Ding Bai wanted to say no, but she couldn’t. Since Ye Ye and Yu Sisi had arrived early, she had to take them to meet the family matriarch first.
With a long sigh, Ding Bai clasped her hands behind her back and reluctantly nodded.
Ye Ye’s visit was no surprise to Ding Moyan, but seeing her face still brought an involuntary pang of distress.
She was terrified Ye Ye might blurt out something shocking, she wasn’t sure she could handle it.
“Young Miss Ye, it’s been years. You’ve grown into such an elegant and poised young woman. I hear your recent proposal for the new inhibitor has been approved as an experimental project by the Rose Workshop. Your academic achievements truly echo the legacy of your grandfather, Ye the Third.”
Old Lady Ding leaned on her cane, her steps heavy as she approached. Her eyes narrowed into slits as she studied Ye Ye’s youthful yet familiar face, her gaze tinged with nostalgia for an old friend.
The “Ye the Third” Old Lady Ding mentioned was Ye Ye’s grandfather, the third young master of the Ye family in his time. Even in his youth, he had made significant contributions to interstellar scientific progress.
Ding Moyan’s ears perked up as she listened to the conversation, discreetly pulling up information on her System Panel.
“Hello, Grandmother Ding.” Ye Ye performed a graceful noble’s greeting, her lovely face breaking into a sweet smile. “It’s been years, yet you look just the same as ever.”
Yu Sisi silently admired Ye Ye’s quick wit, giving her a subtle thumbs-up: Impressive.
Her words coaxed a pleased smile after all, who didn’t enjoy a few compliments?
Rubbing her wrist, still red from Ye Ye’s earlier nervous grip, Yu Sisi couldn’t help but glance at Ding Moyan’s reaction.
Over there, Ding Moyan was unexpectedly calm. She sat quietly in the corner, eyes slightly closed, showing no intention of opening them or looking this way.
Perhaps she truly didn’t care about any of this including Ye Ye maintaining that final boundary.
Yu Sisi withdrew her gaze, rubbing her stiff neck, silently pitying her friend as she sighed over Ye Ye’s rocky love life.
**[Name: Ye Hua
Identity: Former Head of the Ye Family
Gender: Male Alpha
Age at Death: 36 (Died in the Third Star System, cause of death unknown)
Note: Graduated from the Rose Workshop alongside Zhang Cen (Old Lady Ding) and Klay Geyas (former head of the Geyas family). They were extremely close.]**
Dead at 36. What a coincidence.
Ding Moyan suppressed the glint in her eyes, pulling up the file of the experimental subject Klay Geyas she had previously investigated. She clicked to compare their dates of death in detail.
Same month, same day, roughly the same time.
Ding Moyan’s nose felt slightly congested. She steadied herself, processing the information she had gathered.
Zhang Cen and Klay Geyas were both experimental subjects, and Klai Geyas had transitioned from Omega to Alpha. Where had the Alpha gland come from? Just like Wang Ye where had her gland come from? The books found in Zong Jia’s possession had no records of gland origins.
The timing of their deaths was too coincidental, leading Ding Moyan to another conjecture.
What if? What if the glands used for those experimental subjects whether Alpha or Omega were harvested from living people? Then what about the President’s gland?
Ding Moyan shuddered, her pupils contracting. The horrifying thought made her heart race.
Blood rushed uncontrollably to her brain, sharpening her senses. She glanced around the unfamiliar courtyard, where none of the passing faces were familiar. Most were young Alphas and Omegas from the main or branch families of the Ding household.
Old Lady Ding’s shrewd gaze lingered on Ye Ye, almost as if she were appraising something.
With her earlier conjecture in mind, Ding Moyan found Old Lady Ding’s kindly demeanor suddenly dripping with greed.
Her chest tightened. Ding Moyan’s instincts for danger were unusually sharp. Her nerves strained, and the icy jade bracelet around her wrist now felt like a slender, venomous serpent coiled around her pale skin, silently trapping her in peril.
Tense, Ding Moyan felt the urge to leave. Just as she was about to move, a voice called out from behind.
“Mo Yan.”
Hearing it, Ding Moyan’s eyes flew open. She turned sharply.
A pair of dark pupils stared back at her. Her fingers trembled slightly within her sleeves, and her stomach twisted involuntarily.
The familiar voice pierced her eardrums. Ding Moyan blinked slowly, forcing composure as she met Old Lady Ding’s gaze. “Grandmother.”
“Is something the matter?”
Old Lady Ding smiled. “Were you about to leave just now?”
“It’s been so long since I’ve been back to the Ding family’s main residence. I wanted to visit my old bedroom.”
“After all this time away, it’s only natural.” Old Lady Ding chuckled. “Ding Bai, take your sister to her room.”
At the mention of his name, Ding Bai stiffened, shooting her a glance filled with undisguised loathing, his expression dark and unreadable.
