- Chapter 73 - Joining
After Jenny withdrew, Annie told Yu Ke, “She isn’t loyal and isn’t worth the two billion you spent to acquire her. If I were you, I wouldn’t keep someone like that by my side.”
Recalling Jenny’s hesitant and indecisive demeanor, Yu Ke felt a knot in her heart. On one hand, she felt indebted to Jenny, so it seemed only right to bid for her and keep her close. She didn’t care about the money, ever since Xing’er’s incident, Yu Ke had never been stingy with her wealth. If spending all her money could bring back her beloved, she would have done it long ago. On the other hand, Yu Ke still held a grudge against Jenny. Back in the palace, Jenny had deceived Xing’er by stealing Yu Ke’s pheromones, which had once put Xing’er in danger.
Even after all this time, Yu Ke still worried that Jenny might betray her at any moment.
So, Yu Ke agreed with Annie’s suggestion to let Jenny rest for a while before questioning her again.
She was desperate to find out about Lan Xing’s whereabouts, but reason told her… she needed to be more cautious.
Hearing Annie’s words, Yu Ke slowly let out a sigh. Seeing Annie light a cigarette, she went over and borrowed one as well, letting out a soft sigh without saying a word.
Annie glanced at her and chuckled lightly, “You could hand her over to me. My people have many ways to make her tell the truth.”
Yu Ke shook her head, “Forget it.”
Annie raised an eyebrow, “Giving up so soon?”
Yu Ke held the cigarette between her fingers, thought for a moment, but still had nothing to say. After all the turmoil over the past few months, she had gradually learned to let go of her obsessions. Sometimes, upon careful reflection, she realized that some things didn’t necessarily have to be done.
If saving Xing’er’s life required sacrificing someone else’s, then perhaps it wasn’t worth saving after all.
It would be better for her to return to Xing’er’s side sooner and care for her until the end of time.
Annie took a couple of puffs from her cigarette before casually tossing it aside. She stood up and headed in Jenny’s direction.
Watching her go, Yu Ke suddenly said, “What’s the use of finding out the truth? The ‘Lan Xing’ she mentioned isn’t the Xing’er I want to save.”
Annie turned back to look at her, offering her usual warm and charming smile, elegant and captivating. She said, “Yu Ke, if I help you find a way to save your cloned little mermaid, how will you repay me?”
Yu Ke replied, “If you can save Xing’er, I’ll do anything.”
“Will you join All-free?” Annie narrowed her eyes, making a serious invitation.
Yu Ke was slightly taken aback, “Me? Why?”
Annie’s smile remained unchanged, “I need you to join.”
“You have so many capable people around you. Why do you need me?” Yu Ke looked at Annie curiously and asked, “When you told Zhang Jun you wanted to see me, had you already considered recruiting me?”
Annie nodded and said, “When I found out you were running around trying to save a cloned mermaid, I wanted you to join us.”
“Why?” Yu Ke asked, “What does saving Xing’er have to do with your organization?”
Annie looked at Yu Ke, her expression turning serious. After a moment, she let out a soft sigh and said in a somewhat weary tone, “Princess, do you understand the situation we’re in now?”
“I’ve looked into some information. The current interstellar opinion of you is quite favorable. Because Zhang Jun exposed the Polish Empire’s conspiracy in the interstellar court, the public has been swept up in an anti-monarchy wave. So, your advocacy for freedom and equality has made you quite popular recently,” Yu Ke said. “Is it because you’re expanding that you want me to join? I’m just a traveler, I’m afraid I can’t be of much help to your organization. Besides…”
Yu Ke paused, her expression cool as she said, “I don’t like pirates, and I can’t bring myself to do things that go against my conscience. From what I know, there are several notorious pirates on your ship.”
Annie nodded and said, “I completely understand. That was a decision made by other leaders in the organization for certain reasons. When I first founded All-free, there were only twelve young people, half of whom were even younger than you. As one of the leaders, I was about your age at the time. Now, half a century has passed, and the organization is no longer what it used to be. Personally, managing it has become quite challenging.”
Yu Ke asked, “Haven’t you considered stepping down?”
Annie shook her head firmly. “Across the entire interstellar community, liberated regions account for less than 13%. The vast majority of areas are still colonies or slave regions, which means hundreds of millions of people are living in dire circumstances. As long as I’m alive, I will always strive to help them.”
Yu Ke’s eyes showed admiration and respect. If she were human, Annie would have been frail and elderly at her age. But as a mermaid, she was still in her prime, eager to shine and contribute, doing what she loved.
Although during their time together, Yu Ke had noticed some of Annie’s flaws, such as being prone to emotional outbursts and occasionally extreme views, when she thought about it, Annie had survived countless battles and was a decisive warrior. Coupled with the fact that she was an Alpha mermaid, it made perfect sense why Annie possessed such complex traits.
After a moment of thought, Yu Ke asked, “Do you have a specific plan in mind for inviting me to join All-free?”
Annie nodded. Her lips moved, emitting a sound that felt both familiar and unfamiliar to Yu Ke. Yu Ke froze, staring at Annie in surprise.
Yu Ke deciphered her language. Annie was speaking a local, lesser-known dialect of the Ferrari Kingdom. Yu Ke couldn’t understand it, but the original owner of her body could. The meaning was: “I’ve been betrayed.”
“If you could join All-free and help me manage the organization, it would be of great benefit to me,” Annie said. “We need new strength, and you are an Alpha with incredibly strong mental power. The fact that you would go to such lengths for a cloned mermaid shows that you hold a firm belief in the inherent equality of all beings in the universe. That’s why I identified you from the start.”
At the end of her words, Annie once again used the Ferrari dialect, whispering very softly, “Help me.”
She gazed calmly at Yu Ke, and suddenly, Yu Ke understood.
She finally realized that Annie was speaking in such a strange way because their conversation was being monitored!
Yu Ke’s eyes swept around the room. Annie smiled and shook her head slightly. From that small gesture, Yu Ke understood one thing.
Although the traitor could eavesdrop on their conversation, they couldn’t see Yu Ke and Anne at all.
“I understand,” Yu Ke said. “Tell me how you plan to save Xing’er.”
“Let’s start with your little maid,” Annie’s expression brightened again when she mentioned Jenny. “We need to find a way to get the real information about Lan Xing from this adorable little thing.”
“Adorable?” Yu Ke was baffled. “You previously gave the order to kill her.”
“That was before I saw this little cutie with my own eyes,” Annie said with a smile. “Look at how sharp-tongued she is. Today was the first time I’ve ever been left speechless by someone.”
Yu Ke sensed something unusual and warned Annie: “You’re old enough to be Jenny’s grandmother. Don’t get any ideas.”
Annie grinned, her eyebrows dancing with amusement.
