- Chapter 70 - Annie
Yu Ke recounted their experiences on the colonial planet to Anna Su. After listening, Anna Su became even more convinced that Isabelle was still alive, living somewhere in the depths of the galaxy.
“I always had my doubts when the revolutionary army claimed Isabelle perished in the fire back then. Now, I’m completely certain,” Anna Su paused briefly, thinking before adding, “It seems Isabelle is very interested in Lan Xing. We need to find a way to use Lan Xing to lure her out.”
However, Yu Ke offered a completely different perspective. “I believe the key to this matter lies in finding the true Princess Lan Xing. Isabelle is likely with Lan Xing. Moreover, based on the clues I gathered on Panda Planet, Lan Xing has been secretly following us all this time. I still haven’t seen her, and I don’t know what her intentions are.”
Anna Su suddenly asked, “Do you understand Lan Xing?”
“I’ve been with Xing’er day and night, how could I not understand her? Why do you ask? Or are you referring to someone else…?”
“If you understand Lan Xing, then you must understand the other person as well. Essentially, they share the same genes, so their personalities shouldn’t differ too much. Think carefully, why would she be following you?”
Yu Ke couldn’t come up with an answer right away. She leaned against Lan Xing’s tank, her gaze fixed on Lan Xing’s weary face. Before long, she fell asleep.
When she woke up, she saw a message from Zhang Jun: “We won the case.”
Perhaps because it had been a long time since she last contacted someone familiar, Yu Ke sent Zhang Jun a video call invitation.
It was Remus who answered, his unkempt, bearded face filling the screen.
“Hey, dear Princess! Long time no see! Zhang Jun is celebrating with someone right now. I’ll get him to talk to you right away!” Remus’ voice was booming, and in the background, the clinking of glasses and vibrant lights painted a lively scene.
“Are you still at the Vatican Grand Court?” Yu Ke asked.
“No, no, no! This isn’t the Interstellar Court. The Persian Empire filed a second appeal against our lawsuit. We’re on Twin Planet now, and the trial just ended. The Persian Empire’s second appeal failed, the evidence of their collusion with pirates to destroy the Lanis-19 base is undeniable. The Persian Empire has now been sanctioned by the Interstellar Alliance, and they no longer have the right to appeal! Guess who we met this time? The leader of All-free! Ms. Annie!!! She’s Zhang Jun’s idol! Zhang Jun finally got to meet his idol in his lifetime!” Remus spilled all this information in one breath, barely giving Yu Ke a chance to speak. Then he asked, “What about you, Captain? How have you been lately? Zhang Jun said you went to Panda Planet. How is Lan Xing? Has she woken up?”
“Still the same, no progress at all,” Yu Ke replied.
“Oh, that’s such a shame. I’m really sorry I can’t be of any help,” Remus said dejectedly.
“You’ve done more than enough,” Yu Ke reassured him, noticing the shifting figures in the background. “Haven’t you found Zhang Jun yet?”
Remus suddenly snapped to attention, grabbing the communicator as he went to find Zhang Jun. Along the way, he chattered incessantly about their journey.
He was truly an optimist, no matter what happened, he always remained cheerful, filled with curiosity and longing for everything. A born traveler, Yu Ke couldn’t help but think with envy.
Back at Lanis-19 Base, when Raymond risked his life to buy time uploading critical data, Yu Ke had almost given up hope of ever seeing him again. Surprisingly, he ended up with the lightest injuries, while Lan Xing was the most severely wounded and still hadn’t regained consciousness.
Amid the chaotic crowd, Yu Ke spotted Zhang Jun. He was dancing in the center of the dance floor, surrounded by admirers, wearing a somewhat ridiculous crown on his head. Confetti and streamers from the celebration were scattered over his hair and shoulders, and he had a cloak draped around him that resembled a skirt. As a beautiful and intelligent male omega, Zhang Jun was highly sought after across the galaxy.
Remus called out to him, and only then did Zhang Jun step down from the dance floor, tossing aside the clutter on his head as he laughed and embraced Remus.
They hugged and kissed openly in public, earning applause and blessings from the onlookers.
At twenty-six, Zhang Jun truly seemed to be at the peak of his vitality. Watching him through the screen, Yu Ke could only feel a pang of envy.
“Darling, have you been drinking?” Remus kissed his lips and said with frustration, “Didn’t I tell you not to drink?”
“I only had a little,” Zhang Jun’s face flushed bright red. “It would’ve been rude not to.”
“But you promised me,” Remus insisted. “It was because you promised that I felt comfortable letting you go off on your own.”
“Alright, alright, let’s not dwell on it,” Zhang Jun said. “Everyone’s watching, it’s embarrassing…”
Remus, ever the chatterbox, went on for a while before suddenly remembering Yu Ke’s situation. “Oh no!” he exclaimed. “I forgot about the Captain!”
Yu Ke had been forgotten for a full three minutes, but after the ordeal on Panda Planet, she had learned to take everything in stride and didn’t mind Remus’ oversight.
She waved toward the screen at Zhang Jun. “Hello.”
Zhang Jun’s mouth fell open in surprise. The next moment, his eyes lit up as if sparkling, and he jumped up excitedly. “Sister Ke!!!”
Yu Ke tilted her head, a smile playing on her lips.
“I didn’t think you’d answer my call!” Zhang Jun exclaimed. “I never expected you to call me!”
Yu Ke didn’t put on airs. In a calm tone, she said, “I felt like talking to someone and happened to see your message.”
“Hold on a moment,” Zhang Jun’s expression turned serious. He moved away from the crowd to a quieter corner and spoke to Yu Ke. “Sister Ke, you’ve been through a lot these days.”
“Suffering doesn’t matter to me. I just want Xing’er to wake up soon,” Yu Ke replied.
Zhang Jun asked, “Is Lan Xing… still the same?”
“Yeah,” Yu Ke turned the camera toward Lan Xing’s beautiful face inside the tank, her voice steady. “Look, she’s still unconscious.”
Zhang Jun’s expression turned sorrowful as he murmured Lan Xing’s name softly. “It’s all my fault… I couldn’t protect her back then…”
“It’s not your fault. Xing’er exposed herself to space to save me.” Yu Ke didn’t like recalling that moment. She looked down at her beloved and said, “At least Xing’er is much more stable now. Anna Su says there’s a chance she might wake up.”
Zhang Jun wiped the tears from the corner of his eye and nodded. “Once we finish our business here, we’ll return to the Blackwater Republic to help you take care of Lan Xing. Just give me and Remus any orders you have.”
Yu Ke wanted to say something but hesitated. She suddenly realized that even with a friend like Zhang Jun, she still had little to talk about.
Apart from Xing’er, Yu Ke didn’t seem to have any particularly close friends.
After leaving Ferrari, Yu Ke assembled the Princess ship. She appeared to be a serious and reliable captain, surrounded by a group of good friends. They lived together on the Princess, ate together, played cards together, and chatted about everything under the sun, discussing their next travel destinations.
But her crew would eventually leave her. All she truly had was her Xing’er.
Yu Ke wasn’t particularly skilled at socializing. In her previous life, she had often been alone, with very few friends. She seemed so lonely, yet she had long grown accustomed to solitude.
She knew Zhang Jun and Remus cared about her and wanted to talk with her more, but all she wanted was Xing’er.
“Sister Ke?” Zhang Jun noticed her silence and asked with concern, “What’s wrong?”
Yu Ke offered a lifeless smile. “Let’s talk another time.”
Just as she was about to end the call, Zhang Jun hurriedly said, “Ah, Princess Sister! I still have something to tell you!”
Yu Ke didn’t cut the communication. Zhang Jun continued, “I met Annie. Not just her, but other members of All-Free too. Do you know what Annie told me?!”
Clearly, this didn’t pique Yu Ke’s interest. Her expression remained gloomy and listless. Not wanting to keep her in suspense, Zhang Jun quickly added, “Annie told me she wants to meet you!”
Yu Ke lifted her eyelids, looking somewhat puzzled at Zhang Jun. “Annie? How does she know me?”
Zhang Jun also found it strange. “Actually, I’m not sure either. I have to admit, it made me a little disappointed. Annie said she’s always wanted to meet you, she has something to say to you… I thought you and Annie had already met.”
Yu Ke shook her head. Zhang Jun went on, “I also asked her about Lan Xing. I thought she might be able to offer some advice regarding Princess Lan Xing’s condition.”
“What did she say?”
“She said she’s waiting to meet you.”
Yu Ke frowned slightly. Zhang Jun said, “Annie is powerful and very trustworthy. I think there might be deeper meaning behind her wanting to meet you. My suggestion is, Sister Ke, you should go see her.”
“If she can tell me how to save Xing’er, of course I’ll go see her. But what if she’s just messing with me?”
“She’s not that kind of person,” Zhang Jun said. “Although I can’t guarantee it 100%, after what happened during the attack on Lanis last time, I trust my instincts even more. Annie… she might be able to help Lan Xing.”
Yu Ke set aside her doubts and asked him, “Did she say where to meet?”
“I’ve told you, I’ll send you the coordinates later. But you need to be careful, all members of All-Free are interstellar fugitives. They’ll most likely arrange to meet you in a very remote location. It was the same when I met Annie last time. Don’t be too scared, just stay alert.”
Yu Ke agreed and soon ended the communication.
To be honest, she had no desire to meet anyone, let alone a revolutionary soldier she’d never met before. But thinking of Lan Xing, she gathered her resolve. After a brief rest, Yu Ke piloted her spacecraft toward the coordinates provided by Annie.
