- Chapter 47 - Hepburn
Angel never expected that Ivan would make Yu Ke completely submit with just a couple of sentences.
She stood up and confronted Yu Ke directly: “Yu Ke, you’re a coward. How could you agree to this?! Even if you did, we won’t!”
Yu Ke ignored her and continued speaking to Ivan: “I need some time. Ms. Rum has been in hibernation for a while, she probably won’t mind waiting a couple more days.”
“Of course she won’t mind,” Ivan smiled gently. “If needed, I’ll provide whatever assistance I can.”
“We’ll discuss it when the time comes,” Yu Ke pointed at Angel as if indicating a piece of goods, saying coldly, “Can I take her back first?”
“Feel free,” Ivan curved his lips into a smile, “After all, I control their commands and can retrieve them anytime.”
…
Yu Ke ate a sandwich on the plane, staying awake the entire journey while leaning against the window in a daze. She heard Angel throwing a tantrum with the flight attendant, throwing food on the carpet, but she said nothing, and no one dared to disturb her.
By the time they returned from Hongdu to Gana, it was already noon.
Lan Xing was accustomed to taking a nap at this time, so Yu Ke didn’t disturb her and went directly to the orphanage with Angel.
Outside the orphanage gate was a sea of daisies, with white statues nearby where a flock of pigeons flew up and down. Children were playing hide-and-seek there, greeting anyone who approached with enthusiasm.
Yu Ke realized this was her first time visiting the orphanage.
A month ago, when Li Jian’an was selecting orphanages, he had asked for Yu Ke’s opinion and whether she wanted to visit together.
Yu Ke had refused outright, letting Li Jian’an handle everything. She thought she would eventually have a chance to see the children after they moved into the orphanage.
But over the past month, she and Lan Xing had been busy preparing scripts and filming, never once visiting where these children lived.
“Does sister not like children?” Lan Xing had asked her this question several times.
“Children can be noisy and troublesome. Not everyone likes children,” Yu Ke would reply.
“What about your own children?”
“That’s different.”
“They’d still be noisy and require lots of patience and energy. After all… not all children grow up in a drifting bottle,” Lan Xing asked quietly, “Sister, did you have many regrets when you were young?”
“…”
Regrets?
Just found it boring, that’s all.
This kind of dull boredom was something she only gradually came to understand in her teens and twenties.
On the surface, her life seemed smooth sailing with everything she could want. But one day when she was sixteen, standing on a foreign street holding coffee in the cold wind, looking back on her brief life, she suddenly realized she had nothing.
Her childhood lacked companionship from parents and relatives, childhood friends had long lost contact, she kept transferring schools and moving during her education years, in the end, her surroundings remained empty and cold. Even her only brother didn’t call once throughout the year.
She didn’t feel lonely, because loneliness had long become normal for her. Her only feeling was boredom.
During that period, Yu Ke began immersing herself in various extreme sports. One winter, she spent 25 consecutive days skiing in the mountains. In summer, she went bungee jumping, scuba diving, traveled to Antarctica, and even climbed the Himalayas… Yet none of these experiences made her an “interesting person.” While scaling peaks at eight thousand meters, the lyrics of that song echoed in her mind “I once thought about ending it all too.”
“People say the voids from childhood often take a lifetime to heal,” Lan Xing’s gentle voice lingered in her ears, “Sister, Xing’er will always be with you.”
Holding Lan Xing while falling asleep at night, Yu Ke would still ponder, what exactly constituted her own void?
Lack of love?
Absence of companionship?
Was her aversion to children also rooted in not knowing how to interact with them?
She didn’t just dislike children, she resented adults who obsessively procreated without taking responsibility.
Bringing lives into this world recklessly was nothing short of a catastrophe for those suddenly thrust into existence.
“…”
Yu Ke adjusted her sunglasses, squinting against the glaring sunlight as a group of children came running toward her, calling out, “Sister Ke!”
“Angel! Angel’s back!”
The children spread the news excitedly. Hepburn arrived late, stumbling halfway before picking herself up and dusting off her pants. A few stray strands of hair danced wildly in the wind as she flashed an innocent smile and chirped, “Sister Ke!”
Seeing Hepburn, Yu Ke’s breath hitched slightly.
She couldn’t fathom what kind of person would want to take this child’s heart.
“Sister Ke, you brought Angel back! You’re amazing!” Domi’s tall frame stood out among the children as he boomed enthusiastically.
“Angel, are you okay?” Big brother Mike asked with concern.
But Angel ignored them all. With a despondent expression, she got out of the car and sprinted straight toward the orphanage dormitory.
Some children chased after Angel while others stared curiously at Yu Ke, their young faces reflecting a spectrum of emotions.
“What happened to Angel?” Domi asked Yu Ke, “What’s going on, Sister Ke?”
“There’s been an incident. I need to take Hepburn away,” Yu Ke stated impassively, glancing down at Domi. “Take me to the director. I’ll explain the situation to him.”
Completely unaware of what was happening, Domi led Yu Ke to negotiate with the director.
By the time Yu Ke finished signing the documents and prepared to take Hepburn away, the children’s attitudes had completely shifted.
“Where’s Hepburn?” she casually asked one child.
The child shook their head vigorously, eyes burning with anger.
Yu Ke moved past them, systematically checking each dorm room. Only when Domi and Mike compared notes did they realize the gravity of the situation, Angel had already revealed the truth to them.
So, Yu Ke taking Hepburn away meant using the child’s heart to save someone else’s life.
And if she didn’t do this, all the other children would die.
“We can’t let her take Hepburn,” Mike gritted his teeth, “We must protect Hepburn at all costs!”
Mike’s words galvanized the group. They formed a human barricade in the dormitory hallway, standing guard resolutely. No one was willing to tell Yu Ke where Hepburn was hiding.
“Hepburn, I know you can hear me,” Yu Ke called out in the corridor, “Come with me. I’ll find another way.”
Crouched in a storage box in the corner of one room, Hepburn hugged her knees, trembling uncontrollably.
Not long ago, Angel had hidden her here, instructing her, “No matter what happens, don’t come out. We’ll find a way to protect you!”
Mike had also said, “As long as they can’t find you, they can’t do anything to you. Stay hidden and behave. We won’t let you be sacrificed.”
Hepburn didn’t know what was happening. She was afraid of causing trouble for everyone, and after hearing Yu Ke’s voice, she grew even more flustered.
“Don’t listen to her! She’s just a coward!” Angel rushed out and shouted, “Yu Ke, you can’t save us! Stay out of our business!”
Yu Ke sighed softly.
It was true, she could ignore everything and let these children face that terrifying future. For them, perhaps there was no future at all.
But if she stood by and did nothing, today she wouldn’t be able to face these children, and tomorrow she wouldn’t be able to face Xing’er.
“Hepburn, I’ll give you time to think,” Yu Ke leaned against the gray-blue wall of the corridor and lit a cigarette. “If you choose to come with me, I’ll find a way to save you and the others. If you decide to keep hiding, then I really won’t bother with you anymore.”
Time ticked by, Angel clenched her fists nervously, cursing the unfairness of fate. Domi stood behind her, gently patting her shoulder. Mike sat on the floor, looking utterly dejected. The others quietly wiped away their tears…
“Hepburn!” A child’s exclamation caught everyone’s attention.
Angel rushed forward. “Hepburn, didn’t I tell you not to come out?!”
Hepburn’s eyes were red-rimmed as she looked at Yu Ke and said in a fragile voice, “Sister Ke, I believe you.”
A faint glimmer of light flashed in Yu Ke’s dim eyes.
The driver pulled the car up to the dormitory building. Yu Ke took Hepburn’s hand and led her inside. The others chased after them, with Angel pounding on the car door, shouting, “Stop! Stop right now!”
The driver glanced uncertainly at Yu Ke, who said coldly, “Ignore them. Just drive.”
With a roar of the engine, the car sped away, leaving the children behind and disappearing from their sight.
In the rearview mirror, the children wept in fear and helplessness. Angel knelt on the ground, overwhelmed with guilt.
“Why did you choose to believe me?” Yu Ke asked coldly, watching Hepburn in the rearview mirror.
“Because… Sister Xing’er is your girlfriend,” Hepburn whispered, her head lowered. “Hepburn thinks that since Sister Xing’er is so good, you probably wouldn’t harm me.”
So that’s how it was.
Yu Ke curved her lips into a smile. It seemed not all children were annoying, some, like Hepburn, were sensible and well-behaved.
Thinking of Xing’er, she immediately called her.
“Sister,” Lan Xing’s voice came through the receiver as if pressed close to the microphone, like musical notes striking her heart. “Are you back?”
“Yeah,” Yu Ke replied, having not slept all night, she squinted her tired eyes. “Xing’er, I miss you.”
“Um… I… I miss you too,” Lan Xing was startled by her sudden confession but quickly recovered. “Sister, is something wrong?!”
“I’m fine,” Yu Ke paused. “I have some things to deal with. I might not be able to see you for a few days.”
“Is it… urgent?” Lan Xing asked hesitantly in a small voice. “Have you found Angel?”
“She’s fine,” Yu Ke said. “Once I finish handling these matters, I’ll come find you, okay?”
“Alright, you can go handle your business with peace of mind,” Lan Xing said sweetly. “But make sure to rest and don’t overwork yourself. Also, be careful and stay safe!”
“Hearing your voice makes all my tiredness disappear,” Yu Ke replied without a care for those around him. “Xing’er, I want to kiss you.”
“…”
Upon hearing this, the driver was so startled that he slammed on the brakes, causing the car to decelerate sharply in mid-air and nearly plummet downward. Yu Ke shot a frosty glance at the driver and asked coldly, “What’s wrong?”
“My deepest apologies!” the driver hurriedly said. “Nothing’s wrong, I’ll resume speed right away!”
Yu Ke let out a soft sigh and continued speaking into the phone, “I really wish I could see you right now.”
The driver furrowed his brow tightly, while Hepburn in the back seat also wore a conflicted expression.
How could their usually aloof and dignified goddess act like this when talking to her girlfriend?
Wasn’t it a bit too lovey-dovey?
Look how she startled the poor driver.
