- Chapter 39 - The Bathtub
Back at the hotel, everyone shared their experiences. It turned out that while Yu Ke and Lan Xing had blended into the rioting crowd, Lan Zhen and Xiao Nan were also among them.
However, Lan Zhen had only joined in for the excitement and unexpectedly gained the trust of the workers’ leader.
“Panda Planet is a free nation,” the workers’ leader declared. “You must convey what is happening here to the wider galaxy, to Hinata. Our people are suffering, but we refuse to accept it—we are rising up in rebellion.”
“Of course, the people of the universe will learn of these events. Freedom will surely return to this planet,” Lan Zhen replied perfunctorily, inciting the workers to revolt.
In truth, she was only interested in the planet’s energy resources.
The workers believed that by overthrowing the administrators, they could gain control of the factories and resume operations of the planet’s energy systems. In reality, they were incapable of achieving any of it.
Hinata would likely send forces to take over by force soon, but until then, anyone could intervene in the affairs here.
For Panda, this might even be an opportunity.
But now, Yu Ke had informed Lan Zhen that Isabelle was the mastermind behind the uprising, changing the entire nature of the situation.
“She told you she’s already a third-generation clone and has prepared a new generation of clones, so she intended to sacrifice herself from the start, is that right?” Lan Zhen asked, finding it hard to believe.
“She said she didn’t want this place to become a war factory, nor to create more people sent to the battlefield. So, she planned to destroy the laboratory and herself,” Yu Ke said gravely. “In the end, she shut off the lab’s oxygen supply, intending to let all the experimental subjects die in their sleep.”
Lan Xing sat on the sofa, her blue tail twitching idly. Propping her chin on her hand, she murmured softly, “Isabelle is truly insane.”
“Yes,” Yu Ke said gently, looking at her. “Thankfully, you were there to save hundreds of lives.”
Lan Xing blushed slightly, lowering her head and whispering, “It was nothing, really…”
“I’m truly proud of you,” Yu Ke gazed at her. “I never expected Isabelle to resort to violence against you. I feel ashamed I couldn’t protect you better.”
“Don’t say that!” Lan Xing hurriedly replied. “You saved so many children. I don’t even know how you managed to gain their trust, I could never have done that!”
Yu Ke sighed softly. “If it were you, they’d probably trust you even more. You have no idea how much trouble those kids gave me.”
Lan Xing chuckled, withdrawing her hand from her chin and lightly swishing her tail. Shyly, she said, “In the end, we stopped Isabelle and made it out safely, all thanks to everyone’s help and the Third Princess’s assistance!”
Lan Zhen raised an eyebrow. “That’s right. Without me, you’d all be dead in there.”
“So, what do we do with them now?” Xiao Nan frowned. “There are so many children. Should we take them with us? There’s no extra space on the Princess, is there?”
“Let them squeeze onto the spacecraft,” Yu Ke suggested. “If they stay here, the factory people will use them as bargaining chips.”
“Mm-hmm,” Lan Xing said earnestly. “We need to find them a home!”
“Sounds simple, but it’s not that easy to find someone to adopt them,” Lan Zhen poured cold water on the idea, murmuring gloomily. “Might as well do what they suggested, send them away and earn a commission fee.”
“Let them decide for themselves,” Yu Ke replied indifferently. “If they don’t want to be sold, we’ll find them adoptive families. As for Angel, her father entrusted her to us, so we’ll honor his wishes.”
After some discussion, Yu Ke handed the key left by the portly manager to the workers’ leader. She took only 50 cans of fuel, paid 500,000 gold, and gained an additional twelve young scouts.
Back on the Princess, Yu Ke had Xiao Nan arrange two rooms for the children. She personally settled Lan Xing, carrying her to the bathtub, filling it with water, and letting her soak in the warmth.
After letting Lan Xing rest in the tub, Yu Ke hurried to check on Li Jian’an.
Among the crew of the Princess, Li Jian’an could be considered the unluckiest.
When Lan Zhen and Xiao Nan found him, he had already been beaten to the brink of death by the rioting crowd. If they hadn’t arrived in time, Li Jian’an might have met his end on this planet.
Now, Li Jian’an lay in a hospital bed, his body wrapped in bandages, his leg suspended in the air, his face bruised and swollen almost beyond recognition.
But he could still speak. When he saw Yu Ke, his eyes lit up briefly before dimming again.
“I wasn’t any help, I just held everyone back,” Li Jian’an said dejectedly. “I’m sorry, Captain.”
“I heard you went to the factory square because you were worried about Xiao Nan’s safety,” Yu Ke sat by his bedside, looking at him with pity. “What was Xiao Nan’s reaction when she found out?”
Li Jian’an shook his head, disheartened. “No reaction at all. I was just being foolish.”
“Cheer up, my first mate,” Yu Ke gently patted his arm. Li Jian’an trembled in pain, and Yu Ke withdrew her hand, chuckling. “Sorry about that!”
“Hiss… no, it’s fine,” Li Jian’an gritted his teeth.
“I’ll have Xiao Nan take care of you. After all, our ship can’t do without a first mate,” Yu Ke raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile playing on her lips. “This time, make sure you seize the opportunity…”
“No need,” Li Jian’an laughed self-deprecatingly. “Really, no need. Don’t call her over!”
Yu Ke looked at him, puzzled.
“I’ve figured it out, really,” Li Jian’an forced a smile. “Some people are just destined to be supporting characters. No matter how hard they try, a Beta can never stand out like an Alpha. I understand why she doesn’t like me.”
Yu Ke frowned slightly, her heart aching for this kind-hearted man.
“I thought… after what happened last time, she would… well, how should I put it? At least be a bit wary of Alphas, or even resentful, given how her last boyfriend turned out. But it seems I overthought it. Xiao Nan… sigh, did you know? When I rushed to the square to rescue her, I realized the girl wasn’t Xiao Nan. I was so relieved…”
“Turns out, I’m the type to put others first…” Li Jian’an smiled bitterly.
Yu Ke thought for a moment and said, “Lan Zhen is just playing around with her. Back at the seaside restaurant, she was flirting with other Omega men. Even if it weren’t Xiao Nan, as long as it’s a pretty Omega, Lan Zhen would make a move. Xiao Nan hasn’t seen much of the world and is easily captivated, there’s no helping it. Once they’ve had their fun and grown tired of it, Xiao Nan will come to her senses. Then she’ll realize that you’re the best one for her!”
Li Jian’an: “…Thanks, but I don’t feel comforted.” On the contrary, he felt like hitting someone.
Yu Ke believed she was only speaking the truth. Besides, she never had high hopes for Lan Zhen and Xiao Nan, someone like Li Jian’an was far more suitable for Xiao Nan.
Since the truth was so hurtful, Yu Ke had no choice but to say, “Well, keep it up then. Cut ties with love and be my excellent first mate!”
Li Jian’an sighed, “Ah.”
Yu Ke made a round on the ship, checked on the children’s living conditions, gave a few instructions, and then returned to Lan Xing’s room.
She pushed the door open quietly, careful not to disturb Lan Xing.
Lan Xing was leaning against the fish tank, eyes closed as if asleep. As Yu Ke approached, she slowly opened her eyes and murmured sleepily, “Sister.”
Her tail was fully extended in the water, and only at times like this could its most beautiful side be fully displayed.
Yu Ke walked over, crouched down, and scooped water with her hands, pouring it over Lan Xing’s body, letting the cool water trickle down her shoulders and dampen her skin.
At first, Lan Xing seemed a bit restrained. She was wearing a top, arms crossed as she hugged herself, head lowered as if troubled.
“Let your sister bathe you,” Yu Ke leaned in and kissed her forehead. “Relax.”
Lan Xing’s ears quickly turned red.
The space on the Princess was limited. Only her room had a bathtub, yet it still felt cramped. After just a short while together, the two were starting to sweat.
As Yu Ke’s lips left her forehead, she thought of how Isabelle had once forced herself upon her, and a surge of blood rushed through her veins.
She lowered her head and suddenly captured Lan Xing’s soft lips, savoring them like sweet nectar, unwilling to pull away. Yet, countless thoughts raced through her mind.
Lan Xing lifted her eyelids, her long, curled lashes brushing against Yu Ke’s skin, tickling softly. Her clear, sparkling eyes made Yu Ke’s heart tremble.
“Lan Xing,” Yu Ke gazed down at her and whispered softly, “I want you.”
With a splash, the tail thrashed in the bathtub, sending water everywhere and splashing Yu Ke all over, even her face. Lan Xing, flustered, sat up straight, her face as red as a shrimp, and stammered, “Sorry, I… didn’t mean to!”
Even as she spoke, her tail continued to wag excitedly, splashing water everywhere, making her even more embarrassed. She covered her face with her hands, so mortified she wished she could leap out of the bathtub.
Yu Ke wiped the water from her face, torn between laughter and exasperation, then reached out to hold Lan Xing by the waist and leaned in to kiss her.
If only I hadn’t put her in the bathtub, Yu Ke thought with a tinge of regret.
Before they could even get started, her clothes were already soaked. She laughed heartily, trying to catch Lan Xing’s agile tail, pinning her down and teasing her relentlessly.
When she tried to lift Lan Xing out of the bathtub, she nearly stumbled, and the two tumbled onto the bed. Lan Xing giggled foolishly, dodging her while playfully teasing her with her tail. The fin’s delicate tendrils brushed against Yu Ke, both ticklish and soothing.
