- Chapter 137 - Extra 1
These days, Little Stiff (Xiao Guban, Shen Yining) had been overwhelmingly busy. Her Empress Mother and Royal Consort Mother had gone to a nearby imperial retreat outside the capital for some rest and relaxation, leaving her behind to oversee state affairs. It was clear they wanted her to start getting used to the demands of leadership early.
But that left poor Little Stiff swamped—endless political matters and memorials to review filled her days. Some days, she didn’t even leave her study in the Eastern Palace, eating her meals right at her desk. Today was another one of those days.
Zhou Zixuan, seeing how worn out Shen Yining was, felt a deep ache in her heart. She had the maids bring in food and softly urged,
“Your Highness, no matter how much there is to do, your health comes first. Please eat something.”
“Alright,” Shen Yining replied, though her brush was still moving. She quickly jotted down a few final notes on a memorial before standing up to eat.
Watching how exhausted she looked, Zhou Zixuan couldn’t help but feel worried for her.
“Even when Her Majesty was in charge, she didn’t work herself this hard every day. You really need to take better care of yourself—or how will your body hold up?” she said gently, using a handkerchief to softly wipe the sweat from Shen Yining’s forehead.
Shen Yining finished chewing her bite before replying,
“I’m just getting used to everything. The first few days were rough, but it’s better now. Give me another two hours or so and I should be able to finish today’s work.”
“Then after you eat, why not take a short nap?” Zhou Zixuan suggested kindly. “There’s still time in the day. I’m sure you’ll get through it all.”
Shen Yining shook her head. “No, better to finish it all first.”
Zhou Zixuan looked at her tightly wound little piglet, worried she might burn herself out. She couldn’t help but watch her with concern.
After the meal, Shen Yining returned to her desk, picking up where she left off with the documents. Zhou Zixuan had the servants come in and clean up the dishes. She brought over a chair and quietly sat by Shen Yining’s side to keep her company.
Seeing her beloved working so hard, Zhou Zixuan grew even more worried. She got up, walked closer, and gently pinched the tip of Shen Yining’s ear. Her voice was soft, a little playful.
“Your Highness, are you sure you don’t want to come lie down with me for a little nap?”
Shen Yining’s ears flushed pink under her touch. Lately, she’d been so exhausted that she would fall asleep the moment her head hit the pillow at night. She and Zhou Zixuan hadn’t had much time to be close. Now, with her ear held gently in Zhou Zixuan’s fingers, her heart fluttered with a quiet ache.
She hesitated, thinking—perhaps these reports weren’t that urgent. A small break wouldn’t hurt.
With that thought, Shen Yining reached out and gently pulled Zhou Zixuan closer, wrapping an arm around her waist. She looked into Zhou Zixuan’s eyes and said with a rare softness,
“Sister Xuan, I miss you… Can we…?”
Zhou Zixuan instantly understood what her little piglet meant. Her cheeks turned red. They had been married for a while now, and while they had been intimate during the day before, it was rare—mainly because she was shy.
Lowering her gaze to meet Shen Yining’s, she found those eyes looking back at her so pitifully, so full of longing. Her heart melted. Shen Yining had been tense and overworked lately. Maybe she did need a little comfort. Zhou Zixuan hesitated, then gave the faintest nod, cheeks still burning.
That tiny gesture was all Shen Yining needed—her eyes lit up with delight. A memory from a romance book she once read suddenly came to mind, and her face flushed even deeper. She leaned in a little more, rubbing gently against Zhou Zixuan, and whispered softly,
“Sister Xuan… can we do it here, in the study? I… I want to, here…”
As soon as the words left her mouth, her face turned completely red.
Zhou Zixuan’s eyes widened. She knew her little piglet could be a bit bold when she let her guard down, but she hadn’t expected her to be this daring—wanting to do such a thing at her official desk, in the midst of government paperwork!
Zhou Zixuan was flustered beyond belief. Her face turned crimson as she pushed lightly at Shen Yining’s waist, trying to compose herself.
But her push wasn’t firm, and her little piglet didn’t move.
“Your Highness, be careful what you say. It’s still broad daylight. How could you think of doing something like that here?” Zhou Zixuan’s face turned red as she spoke, flustered. She gave Shen Yining two light pushes. “Stop being silly and let go.”
But instead of letting go, Shen Yining stood up and pulled Zhou Zixuan into her arms. Holding her close, she spoke in a soft, playful tone without a trace of guilt.
“Sister Xuan, have a little pity on me. It’s just the two of us in the study. Isn’t it the same as being in the bedroom?”
Zhou Zixuan’s voice trembled slightly as she tried to reason with her.
“No, absolutely not. This isn’t right. Be honest, have you been reading those strange storybooks again?”
She had just realized that Shen Yining was kissing the side of her neck.
“I haven’t,” Shen Yining replied in a gentle voice. “I just missed you.”
Without waiting for a response, she leaned in and kissed Zhou Zixuan’s lips. In no time at all, Zhou Zixuan was resting weakly in her arms.
Shen Yining kissed her again, eyes full of affection. “Just for a moment, alright? I’ll be very gentle.”
Zhou Zixuan’s face was burning. She couldn’t even look her in the eye.
Shen Yining saw that she wasn’t refusing, and knew she was just too shy to say yes. Smiling, she hugged her tighter and kissed her softly again.
“Sister Xuan, you’re always so good to me. You’re my favorite person.”
Zhou Zixuan almost laughed out of frustration. Shen Yining, who was always so proper and serious, had a real talent for coaxing and teasing her at the most unexpected times.
Before she could say anything, Shen Yining had already lifted her onto the desk. Zhou Zixuan was so embarrassed, she didn’t know where to put her hands.
Shen Yining quickly brushed all the official papers off the desk, then hurried back to Zhou Zixuan. She gently held her arm and guided it around her own neck before leaning in to kiss her again.
They stayed in the study for nearly an hour before finally coming out. Zhou Zixuan was carried in Shen Yining’s arms, her face buried in her chest, too embarrassed to look up. Her legs were weak and she couldn’t walk at all.
Shen Yining, on the other hand, looked completely refreshed. The exhaustion from the past few days had vanished. Her face was brighter and more spirited than it had been in days.
The palace maids and attendants of the Eastern Palace noticed the Crown Princess carrying the Consort out of the study. All of them quickly turned their heads and pretended not to see anything. Everyone in the palace knew how much Shen Yining adored Zhou Zixuan, but they hadn’t expected her to show it so openly by carrying her out of the study like that.
Shen Yining seemed to be in a very good mood. She gave an instruction to one of the maids nearby.
“Go prepare a bath. The Consort and I will bathe.”
“Yes, Your Highness.” The maid quickly left to arrange things. Her cheeks were slightly red too. She had always thought the Crown Princess was serious and proper. She didn’t expect something like this to happen in the study. Otherwise, why would they need to bathe together at this hour? But she knew better than to ask questions and hurried off to do her job.
Shen Yining happily carried Zhou Zixuan back to their room. Once inside, she gently kissed the tip of her ear and whispered with a smile,
“Don’t be shy anymore. We’re in our bedroom now.”
Zhou Zixuan looked up at her mischievous little piglet and gave her a few light punches on the shoulder before hiding her face again.
“You’ve turned so bold. You bullied me just now, even though I told you no.”
Shen Yining held her even closer.
“You’re too beautiful. I couldn’t hold back. Please don’t be upset. I really won’t do it again next time.”
She said it with a completely serious expression, as if she were making a solemn promise.
Zhou Zixuan looked at her little piglet and felt like she wasn’t as obedient as before.
She swung her legs gently to signal Shen Yining to put her down. Instead, Shen Yining leaned in, kissed her softly on the lips, and said with a tender smile,
“Didn’t you say your legs have no strength? I’ll just carry you.”
Then she sat down with Zhou Zixuan still in her arms, gently placing her on her lap. Zhou Zixuan had never been treated like this before, and her face turned bright red. Her legs felt even weaker, and she shyly reached out to pinch the soft flesh at Shen Yining’s waist.
After being teased, Shen Yining became a lot more well-behaved.
Before long, the maids brought in the bathwater. Zhou Zixuan quickly buried her face in Shen Yining’s chest, too embarrassed to look at anyone. Her little piglet was being far too bold, still holding her like that even as people came in.
Later, Shen Yining very gently helped Zhou Zixuan bathe. That afternoon, she didn’t return to her work. Instead, she stayed in bed holding Zhou Zixuan while they napped together. It wasn’t until after dinner that Shen Yining went back to the study to read over the remaining memorials.
She was in much better spirits now. It seemed that being close to someone you love really could lift your mood. Shen Yining thought to herself that she should spend more time with Sister Xuan like this. It was good for her.
Meanwhile, Zhou Zixuan was completely worn out from that afternoon. Her whole body felt soft as she lay on the bed, thinking about what had happened earlier. She blushed and quickly hid under the blanket.
Over the next few days, Shen Yining learned how to balance work and rest. However, she clung tightly to Zhou Zixuan, refusing to sleep alone. Every night she would “bother” her a few times. Zhou Zixuan could still handle it, as long as it wasn’t as crazy as that time on the desk.
And just like that, by the time Shen Kaiyuan and Ye Yuran returned from the imperial retreat, Zhou Zixuan was already pregnant.
Shen Kaiyuan was overjoyed. Every day, he sent boxes of rare treasures and plenty of nourishing supplements straight to the Eastern Palace.
Shen Yining was also thrilled. When she came back from court, she changed her clothes and immediately went to hold Zhou Zixuan.
“Sister Xuan, have you been feeling unwell at all these past few days?”
“I’m alright. It doesn’t feel much different from before,” Zhou Zixuan replied with a gentle smile.
Shen Yining kissed her and then thought of Xiao Erduo and Xiao Jinli.
“Sister, if our baby turns out to be a girl, she can grow up with Xiao Erduo and Xiao Jinli. They’re all close in age, so they can play together. Just like how I used to play with my cousin when I was young.”
Zhou Zixuan smiled and gently pinched her cheek.
“You and your cousin were that close when you were kids?”
Shen Yining shook her head honestly.
“Not really. My cousin used to be pretty unreliable and made some bad friends. I didn’t like her at all back then and barely even spoke to her. But after she invented things like tofu, she completely changed. Maybe it was because she fell in love with Sister Su and wanted to become a better person for her.”
She said it seriously, as if recalling something very important.
Zhou Zixuan laughed softly.
“Well, when our baby is born, they should build a good relationship with Xiao Erduo and Xiao Jinli too. Otherwise, with a place as big as Beichuan, our child will be overwhelmed.”
“Those two won’t be able to escape their duties either,” Shen Yining replied, smiling at the thought of the chubby, happy faces of Xiao Erduo and Xiao Jinli. The more she thought about it, the more excited she was for their own child’s arrival.
Would their baby be as soft and cuddly as Xiao Erduo?
At that moment, the little one was lying on the bed playing with her stuffed kitten when she suddenly let out two sneezes. She had no idea that, even at her young age, someone was already planning for her future responsibilities.
Shen Xingyue noticed the sneezes and gently wiped her little nose with a handkerchief, smiling as she said,
“Someone must be thinking about our little Erduo. Just listen to those sneezes.”
The little one nodded her tiny head and answered sweetly in her soft baby voice while still holding her toy,
“Yes!”
Her response made both Shen Xingyue and Su Muyu burst into laughter.
Their little Erduo really was the most delightful little thing.
