- Chapter 136 (END OF MAIN STORY)
Another spring had arrived. The little one was now a big toddler, one year and eight months old. She wore an adorable pink dress embroidered with little rabbits along the hem and was gleefully chasing after Shen Xingyue and Su Muyu in the rear courtyard of the prince’s manor.
“Mommy! Mother! Wait for me~” The chubby little toddler called out sweetly in her soft baby voice, her short legs running as fast as they could.
Shen Xingyue glanced at her little white dumpling and chuckled gently. “Slow down, Xiao Erduo, don’t fall!”
“Hehe!” The little one pounced onto Shen Xingyue, skillfully wrapping herself around her mother’s leg.
Looking down at her daughter, Shen Xingyue’s eyes sparkled with joy as she scooped the child into her arms. “Let me see if my little dumpling has gotten heavier.”
She lifted the little one up, then lowered her a bit, then lifted her again. The playful up-and-down motion sent the toddler into peals of giggles.
Seeing how gleeful the little one was—her eyes nearly squinting from smiling—Shen Xingyue held her in one arm, patted her tiny bottom with the other, and laughed, “Is Xiao Erduo happy again? Do you like this game?”
“Yes!” the little one buried her face in Shen Xingyue’s chest, rubbing affectionately as she answered in a sugary tone.
Su Muyu, seeing the two playing so happily, came over and gently pinched the child’s little hand, which only made the toddler laugh even more. Her short legs wobbled in delight.
“Let’s go see what’s over there,” Shen Xingyue said as she placed the toddler on the ground. The little one trotted off quickly, even faster than Shen Xingyue herself, who chased after her anxiously, afraid she might fall.
The toddler was overjoyed. During the winter months, she rarely had the chance to play outdoors. Now that the weather was warm again, everything outside seemed novel and fascinating to her.
Shen Xingyue picked up a small ball woven from vines and placed it on the ground. She began to play kickball with the little one. The three of them—mother, father, and child—each took a side. Shen Xingyue kicked the ball to the child, who excitedly stretched out her tiny leg to stop it, then used all her strength to kick it toward Su Muyu.
To be fair, the little one was quite strong—her kick sent the ball rolling far away. Su Muyu had to run to fetch it. Seeing how far she had kicked it, the toddler burst into delighted laughter.
Shen Xingyue teased her, “Is our little rascal really that strong? Kicked it so far!”
Hearing her mother’s praise, the child beamed with joy.
After playing with her for a while, Shen Xingyue noticed the toddler’s face was covered in sweat, so she scooped her up and started heading back.
The little one rested contentedly against Shen Xingyue’s chest, glancing up at her mother from time to time and giving her adorable looks to charm her.
Shen Xingyue couldn’t help but smile and kissed the child’s chubby cheek. “Our Xiao Erduo is such a good girl.”
Su Muyu looked at the two of them cuddling and shook her head with an amused smile.
“Mommy, I want some fruit,” the little one smacked her lips, clearly craving something tasty.
“Alright, I’ll make you some,” Su Muyu replied, gently squeezing her daughter’s tiny hand.
Once they returned, Su Muyu began preparing a fruit platter for the little one, cutting up all the fruits available in the manor and placing them in a small bowl. However, Beichuan didn’t have an abundance of fruits—most were imported from Daxia and Nanqi, and they were mostly common ones like apples and pears. Fortunately, the little one’s favorite fruit happened to be apples.
“Xiao Erduo, come have your fruit,” Su Muyu said, taking the child from Shen Xingyue’s arms and handing her a small spoon.
The toddler took the spoon in her pudgy hand, scooped up a trembling spoonful, and opened her mouth wide to gobble it down in one go.
Watching her daughter eat so happily, Shen Xingyue sliced up some fruit for herself and Su Muyu as well. “Seeing Xiao Erduo eat so well makes me want some too,” she said with a laugh.
The little one looked up at Shen Xingyue, grinned, and took another big bite. After swallowing, she said in a muffled voice, “Fruit is sweet!”
“Mm, the fruit is sweet, but our little Erduo is even sweeter,” Shen Xingyue said with a loving smile. In her eyes, her child was the epitome of cuteness—everything about her was adorable.
“Mother is sweet too!” the little one added with a milky voice, not forgetting to give Shen Xingyue a bit of flattery.
Shen Xingyue couldn’t help but laugh as she gently pinched the child’s chubby cheeks.
That afternoon, Shen Taotao and the others brought Xiao Jinli back to the prince’s manor. The moment she arrived, she went straight to look for her younger sister. By now, the little one was already two years and two months old, and had clearly grown—her speech was smoother, and her steps more steady.
Han Shu chuckled as she set the little one down in the courtyard. “Go on now. Knock on the door and find your little sister to play.”
“Okay! I want my sister!” the little girl replied spiritedly in her soft baby voice. Full of energy, she charged toward Shen Xingyue’s bedroom and began patting the door with her tiny hands. “I want to play with my sister! Sister, play!”
Shen Xingyue laughed and carried the little one over to open the door. “Xiao Erduo, your sister’s here to see you. Go and play.”
As soon as the door opened, Xiao Jinli’s eyes lit up at the sight of her younger sister. She immediately wrapped her arms around her. “Let’s play, Meimei!”
“Play!” the little one echoed excitedly.
The adults watching the two tiny figures couldn’t help but laugh at how adorable they were.
Hand in hand, the two little dumplings quickly made their way into the bedroom, chattering nonstop. Xiao Erduo even cleverly moved two little stools for herself and her sister. The two of them sat side by side, playing enthusiastically. Though their words were still somewhat muddled, they chattered like they had endless things to talk about.
Shen Xingyue glanced at them and chuckled. “Do you two really have that much to say?”
“I missed Jiejie.” the little one said, swaying happily hand in hand with Xiao Jinli.
As if suddenly remembering something, the little one dashed over to the toy cabinet. She was too short to reach, so she went over and clung to Su Muyu’s leg, acting adorably. “Mommy, I want to play with that one.”
She pointed her chubby finger toward the toy chest. Su Muyu smiled, picked her up, opened the chest, and helped her fetch her toys.
The little one happily pulled out two pink piggy toys and waved them excitedly. “Sister, let’s play with piggies~”
“Okay!” Xiao Jinli eagerly agreed, her eyes lighting up as she stared at the toys in her sister’s hands.
Su Muyu kissed the child on the cheek and gently set her down. “Go ahead, play with your sister.”
“Jiejie, this piggy is for you,” the little one said as she ran over in her wobbly toddler steps. Concerned she might trip, Xiao Jinli quickly stood up to support her and took one of the piggies from her hand. The two little ones then ran around the room, giggling and chasing each other with the pink pig toys.
Shen Xingyue turned to Han Shu and Shen Taotao, smiling. “This is nice. Let the two of them play together—we’d barely be able to get a word in anyway.”
“Exactly,” Shen Taotao laughed. “Ever since they started speaking more clearly, those little mouths haven’t stopped.”
The two tiny girls were now sitting on the floor, laughing so hard about who-knows-what that they had thrown their arms around each other in a happy tangle.
Han Shu had just returned from a border inspection. Since the political situation had stabilized, the northern tribes hadn’t dared to raid the frontier for several months. Things were peaceful across Beichuan, so for now, life had become relatively relaxed for her.
The group sat down, enjoying bowls of double-skin milk pudding, while keeping an eye on the two little ones playing nearby.
“I wonder when His Highness will have a child of his own. Then all the little ones could play together,” Shen Xingyue said with a chuckle. Given how amusing Little Stiff (Xiao Guban) was, if he ever had a baby that took after him, it would no doubt be absolutely adorable.
“It should be soon,” Han Shu replied thoughtfully. “His Highness has been married for quite some time now. It’s just that he’s always so busy, he probably hasn’t had the mind to think about those things.”
“Yes,” Shen Xingyue said with a light laugh. “But His Highness really has been working too hard. Then again, it can’t be helped—he is the future hope of Beichuan, after all.”
Little Stiff had a tough path ahead, and any child of his would likely bear the same burdens. In contrast, she was glad her own little one could grow up happy—eating when she wanted, playing as she pleased, free from the weight of duty.
That evening, Shen Xingyue fired up her newly made grill for roasting skewers in the courtyard.
She had asked the servants earlier to prepare skewers of lamb and beef using bamboo sticks. While the meat cooked on one side, she grilled fish on the other. The aroma soon began to waft through the air. Once the seasoning was added, the fragrance of the roasted meat drifted even farther.
Since the little ones were still young and greasy food could upset their digestion, Shen Xingyue and the others had already fed them dinner. By now, their bellies were full and round—but after playing for a bit, they still toddled over with eager eyes.
Xiao Erduo stared longingly at the skewers, her big sparkling eyes fixed on Shen Xingyue. “Smells good~”
Xiao Jinli looked just the same, her wide eyes following the scent. “Smells good~”
Shen Xingyue had no resistance against their soft voices and pleading faces. Laughing helplessly, she shook her head. “Alright, alright. I’ll grill one skewer each for you two. I’ll put them in bowls, and you’ll use your little spoons to eat them, okay?”
Both little ones nodded enthusiastically. Xiao Jinli obediently dragged over her little stool and found a spot away from the smoke to sit. Her big eyes darted between the skewers and the adults.
Xiao Erduo followed her sister’s example, pulling over a stool to sit right beside her. The two little dumplings sat in a neat row, patiently waiting for their meat.
Shen Xingyue chuckled as she shook her head and quickly grilled two small skewers of lamb for the girls, seasoning them lightly without any chili.
Su Muyu stood by, watching with amusement. The two toddlers were already drooling, and she had to use a handkerchief to wipe their little mouths.
Seeing her mother wiping her chin, Xiao Erduo flashed a sweet smile and cooed, “Mommy, I want meat~”
“Alright, our little carnivore wants meat, huh?” Su Muyu teased, giving her a gentle pat. “Let Mommy check those tummies of yours.” She touched Xiao Erduo’s little belly, then patted Xiao Jinli’s too. “Only one skewer each, okay? Now go ahead and feel your own little meat belly.”
Looking up with a pitiful expression, Xiao Erduo turned to her mother, then lowered her head and gave her round belly a pinch with her pudgy hands—sure enough, a little roll of chub popped right up.
The adults sat down, enjoying bowls of silky double-skin milk pudding while watching the two little ones play.
“I wonder when His Highness will have a baby of his own,” Shen Xingyue said with a smile. “Then all the kids can play together.” With how adorably serious Little Stiff (Xiao Guban) was, just imagining a tiny version of him was enough to make her laugh.
“It might not be long now,” Han Shu replied thoughtfully. “He’s been married for a while. But His Highness is always so busy, I doubt he has time to think about having children.”
“That’s true. He’s been working so hard,” Shen Xingyue said with a soft chuckle. “But what can you do? He is the future of Beichuan.”
She thought about how much pressure Little Stiff carried. If he had a child, that child would likely shoulder the same burden. In contrast, her own little one lived such a joyful life—eating when she was hungry, playing whenever she liked. Shen Xingyue was glad her daughter could grow up freely and happily.
That evening, Shen Xingyue fired up the grill in the courtyard to roast skewers using the new setup she’d come up with.
Earlier, she had asked the servants to prepare bamboo skewers with chunks of lamb and beef. While meat sizzled over the flames, she also grilled some fish. Soon, a rich aroma filled the air. Once she sprinkled on the seasoning, the scent drifted even farther, making everyone’s mouths water.
Since the children were still small and greasy food could upset their stomachs, they’d already been fed earlier. Their bellies were round and full, but after running around a bit, they wandered over, drawn in by the smell.
Xiao Erduo looked longingly at the grill, eyes sparkling as she gazed up at Shen Xingyue. “Smells good~”
Xiao Jinli was no different—her big eyes fixed on Shen Xingyue with the same hopeful look. “Smells good~”
Shen Xingyue couldn’t help but laugh. These two little ones were just too good at making her give in. “Alright, alright. I’ll make one skewer each for you, but I’ll put it in a bowl, and you have to use your little spoons to eat, okay?”
Both girls nodded eagerly. Xiao Jinli quickly brought over her little stool and found a spot away from the smoke to sit, her eyes bouncing between the grill and the adults.
Xiao Erduo copied her sister, pulling her own stool next to Xiao Jinli. The two little girls sat side by side, waiting patiently for their food.
Shen Xingyue chuckled as she grilled two small lamb skewers for them, using only a bit of mild seasoning—no spice at all.
Su Muyu stood nearby, watching with amusement as the girls drooled in anticipation. She wiped their mouths with a cloth and smiled.
Xiao Erduo looked up at her mother, smiling sweetly and softly saying, “Mommy, I want to eat meat~”
“Alright, our little meat-lover wants some, huh?” Su Muyu teased as she gently patted her daughter’s tummy. “Let me check those bellies. You and your sister can each have one skewer, okay? Go ahead—feel that little belly of yours.”
Xiao Erduo gave her mother a pitiful look, then dropped her head and poked her chubby belly with her small hands—sure enough, she pinched a soft little roll.
The sight made Su Muyu burst out laughing. Xiao Jinli, watching her sister, did the same and gave her own belly a squeeze, copying her exactly.
Su Muyu found their matching gestures too cute and pulled both girls into her arms, planting kisses on their cheeks. The girls burst into laughter, giggling non-stop in her embrace.
Meanwhile, Shen Xingyue finished grilling the two skewers and handed them to Shen Taotao.
The girls immediately bounced over to Shen Taotao, eyes wide with excitement. She divided the meat into bowls for them, and they sat properly on their stools, carefully eating with their little spoons.
And goodness, they were eating so well.
Shen Xingyue watched Xiao Erduo take a big bite, her little legs swinging with delight as she chewed happily.
With the kids settled, Shen Xingyue and Han Shu brought the rest of the grilled food to the table. Everyone began to eat. Compared to roasting an entire lamb over a fire, skewered meat had a richer flavor. The pieces cooked evenly, soaking in the seasoning and turning out tender and delicious.
Han Shu smiled and said, “You really do know how to eat well. I don’t think there’s anyone in Beichuan who loves food as much as you.”
“Of course! My big sister is amazing,” Shen Taotao chimed in with a laugh as she enjoyed her grilled fish, which had a unique flavor all its own.
“Eat as much as you want! But save room—grilled mantou slices are coming up,” Shen Xingyue reminded them. Over by the fire, chicken wings and mantou slices were still cooking, now taken over by Erniu. Shen Xingyue finally sat down to enjoy her food.
Not long after, the mantou slices were ready—golden, crispy, and fragrant. As she bit into one, Shen Xingyue was suddenly struck by a wave of nostalgia. For a moment, it felt just like the night markets in her old world.
The feeling left her a little dazed.
She had been in this world for several years now. Her daughter was nearly two. The affection she had built with her “little kitten” was more than enough. At this point, Shen Xingyue had no desire to return to the world she came from.
No matter how advanced that world had been, it couldn’t compare to staying here—with her beloved little kitten and her sweet Xiao Erduo.
