- Chapter 9 - The Demon King and the Master 2
Lin Qing asked cautiously, “Master, since you took the System’s energy, what will happen to it now that it is gone?”
Although the Demon King was only an illusion condensed from mist, Lin Qing still felt as if he were being scrutinized.
“As a disciple of this seat, do you really need to ask such a simple question?”
Lin Qing rubbed his nose, feeling as though he had just been judged for being slow.
He thought for a moment and began to analyze the situation. “The System is a machine, and energy is its battery. It relies on that energy to transport me through worlds. If it cannot extract energy, it can no longer control me to follow the plot. Once the System completely runs out of power and becomes scrap metal, I will finally be free from its control.”
The Demon King replied, “Not entirely stupid.”
Lin Qing looked worried and added, “But I signed a soul contract with the System. If something happens to it and it is destroyed, I will be finished too.”
“Rest easy,” the Demon King said. “Once I have extracted enough energy to restore my body, I will help you dissolve the contract. At that time, we will let it find another host to bind with; it will agree.”
This sounded suspiciously like the empty promises Lin Qing used to give his employees when he first started his business.
Lin Qing could not resist questioning him. “Master, with your great power, why must you rely on the System’s energy to reshape your body?”
“Who said I must use the System’s energy?” The Demon King lifted Lin Qing’s chin. “For instance, I could simply seize your body right now. Since this body was not yours to begin with, you might as well give it to your Master.”
Lin Qing hurriedly lowered his head. “This disciple was wrong. I should not have questioned you, Master.”
The Demon King enjoyed Lin Qing’s look of fear and trepidation long enough before patting his head like one might pat a puppy. “Good disciple, I am only joking. Why take it so seriously?”
Lin Qing gave an awkward laugh. He thought to himself that the idiot demon loved to scare people.
The Demon King’s tone suddenly turned cold. “Are you cursing your Master in your heart?”
Lin Qing immediately put on a sycophantic smile. His beautiful phoenix eyes curved into crescent moons, making him look more adorable than annoying. “Not at all! I was just thinking of how to help you obtain more energy.”
“I have my own plans for that. If we stay here any longer, the System will notice. Go back for now.”
As the Demon King spoke, he pushed against Lin Qing’s chest. The ground beneath Lin Qing’s feet suddenly vanished, and he plummeted into an abyss. He screamed in terror, “Master! How do I find you?”
“I am staying inside the jade pendant I gave you.”
Lin Qing woke up as if from a nightmare and sat up in bed.
[Dear User, I seemed to lose track of your presence just now.] The System’s tone was suspicious, though it was unclear whether it doubted Lin Qing or its own sensors.
[Go away! You stupid system, you disturbed my sleep!]
Lin Qing guiltily pulled the covers over his head. Seeing this, the System dismissed its lingering doubt. The host was still the same annoying person as ever.
Lin Qing fumbled around under the blankets and found a new jade pendant at his waist. He thought about what the Demon King had said in the dream. The demon was cunning, and it was hard to tell how much of his word was true. However, being new to this world, the Demon King was Lin Qing’s only hope of escaping the System. Besides, he had no way to refuse.
Now that the initial main plot was complete, the story dictated that the original owner return to his residence. Due to his physical condition and the leverage held by the Demon King and Demon Lord, he would be forced to compromise and live a shameful daily life with his disciple and the two rulers. For an entire month, the four of them would frequent every corner of the palace, leaving their mark everywhere.
Since this was not the main storyline, he did not have to complete it as long as the Passion Points reached the target. However, a very important plot point was approaching. In a month, the sect competition of the cultivation continent would begin. The original owner was supposed to be caught by the Ghost King while engaged in a tryst with the Demon King and Demon Lord in the suburbs.
According to the laws of this type of story, the Ghost King would naturally join the group. The mission to subdue the Ghost King could not be skipped. He had to find a way to deal with it before then.
Lin Qing touched the jade pendant at his waist with a thoughtful expression. Since he had taken a Master, it should not be too much to ask for help. He wanted to see if his Master would make him follow the plot to gain energy or help him solve the problem.
The jade pendant had recognized him as its master after receiving his blood. Lin Qing closed his eyes and felt a connection. He tried to merge his consciousness into the pendant, and it easily accepted him.
When Lin Qing opened his eyes, he was surprised by the environment inside. The unremarkable pendant actually contained a small world. He looked out at the vast forest and emerald bamboo shrouded in the morning mist. Nearby, a quiet bamboo house sat atop a precipice overlooking water.
White stone milk sprayed from the cliffs, and a clear stream surged like green waves. A forest of emerald bamboo was draped in mist, while hundred foot pines were hung with vines. This place looked like a retreat for a legendary hermit.
By comparison, his own palace was simple and crude. Because he was labeled as cold and holy, every building in his palace was made of plain white jade. In a world like this, a place with such elegant charm could only exist within a pocket dimension.
It seemed this demon was quite wealthy. A random gift was an entire space. Since he was the only disciple, he wondered if he might inherit these treasures one day.
“What bad intentions are you plotting to make you smile like that?”
A chill brushed past his ear. Lin Qing snapped back to reality and found himself facing the purple mist silhouette. He guiltily dropped to his knees. “This disciple greets Master!”
He thought to himself that the demon was far too stealthy and terrifying.
The Demon King spoke playfully, “You are so nervous. It seems you really were plotting against your Master.”
Lin Qing shook his head repeatedly and denied it. The Demon King was only teasing and did not intend to interrogate him.
“I just sent you out; why have you come back so soon? Do you want to see me that badly?”
Lin Qing then explained his purpose. “Master, I have something I need your help with.”
“Very well. My disciple’s business is my business.” The Demon King’s shadow crossed its arms, waiting to listen.
“It is like this. The energy you need is obtained by completing the missions assigned by the System. However, the mission mode for obtaining this energy is a bit unique.”
Lin Qing stopped there, his eyes darting around and his face turning red. He looked as if he wanted to speak but did not know how.
“Oh? How is it unique? Tell me about it.”
The Demon King had been by Lin Qing’s side and had even helped him trap the Demon King and Demon Lord. He could guess the nature of the System’s tasks, but he asked anyway out of amusement. “If you do not explain clearly, how can I help you?”
Lin Qing gritted his teeth and said, “This System is improper. It wants me to sleep with certain fixed characters to gain energy. Furthermore, it must be in specific locations and in specific ways. If I refuse the mission, I will be punished.”
Lin Qing spoke haltingly with a crimson face, but he finally managed to convey what the System wanted him to do.
