- Chapter 15 - The Second Main Storyline 2
Lin Qing pretended to cultivate to deceive the System while his consciousness actually entered the space within the jade pendant.
“Come here and let your Master see how your cultivation has progressed over the past few days.”
As soon as he entered the space, the Demon King’s phantom appeared before him. He placed a finger on Lin Qing’s forehead and countless strands of purple mist coiled around Lin Qing’s body like silk threads. A demonic aura distinct from his own traveled through Lin Qing’s meridians. This caused his body to tense instinctively as if wanting to reject the foreign energy.
Lin Qing closed his eyes and tried his best to relax while ignoring the strange sensation. After a moment, the Demon King said, “Although your constitution is unique and allows you to hold both spiritual and demonic energy, you still need medicinal support if you wish to focus on demonic cultivation without interference from your spiritual roots.”
Lin Qing produced a pen and paper intending to take notes. “Master, which medicinal herbs do I need?”
The Demon King’s phantom floated behind him and observed his writing posture. He asked in surprise, “Is this the writing posture from your world? I am starting to get curious about the kind of world you lived in.”
Lin Qing thought of his own world. After he passed away following his bankruptcy, his parents had moved back to their hometown after settling his affairs. He wondered how they were doing now. Thinking of his parents who had spent their savings to raise him, a flash of pain crossed Lin Qing’s eyes. He replied, “If there is ever a chance, I will take you there to see it, Master.”
Sensing Lin Qing’s sadness, the Demon King did not press further. He leaned closer until his phantom shoulder touched Lin Qing’s body and the two seemed to merge into one.
The Demon King spoke in a playful tone. “Just do not forget your Master once your cultivation is successful. Also, your handwriting is truly peculiar.”
The Demon King was being polite. Lin Qing’s calligraphy was absolute rubbish. This reminded Lin Qing that the original owner’s handwriting was actually quite good. Although few people in this world possessed high intelligence, it was best to remain cautious in all matters.
“Master, can you teach me how to write with a brush?”
“Very well, I shall teach you,” the Demon King replied as he leaned down and covered Lin Qing’s hand with his own palm.
Lin Qing felt a trace of chill over the back of his hand. He did not notice the overly intimate distance or posture. After all, it was difficult to have strange thoughts about a phantom that lacked facial features.
Once they had listed all the various herbs on the paper, Lin Qing began to categorize them. Most of these herbs could be found in the Heavenly Sect’s treasury and would not be difficult to obtain given the original owner’s status, but there were a few Lin Qing had never even heard of. Fortunately, he had an ancient demon with vast experience by his side. The Demon King told him exactly where those rare herbs could be found.
Lin Qing said, “Once the grand competition is over, I will go look for these herbs immediately.”
The thought of the Ghost King appearing during the competition made Lin Qing feel troubled. Sensing his difficulty, the Demon King comforted him. “I told you I will help you.”
Lin Qing nodded. “Then, Master, I will head out first.”
“Go on,” the Demon King replied.
After Lin Qing left, the Demon King’s phantom disappeared from the jade space, leaving only a clone to continue snatching energy from the System. It was time for him to take action. He could not spend every day in this small space focusing solely on his little disciple.
There were only three days left until the grand competition. During this time, Lin Qing visited the Medicinal Herb Peak and exchanged all the spirit stones the original owner had accumulated over the years for the herbs he needed. The original owner had very few expenses, so the accumulated amount was considerable. Even though he had not earned the money himself, Lin Qing felt a pang of regret seeing it all disappear at once.
When the Demon King returned, he saw his little disciple slumped over the table and counting a few remaining spirit stones over and over with his finger. With every count, his expression grew more depressed. This adorable sight made the Demon King laugh. He said, “Once your cultivation is successful, I will take you to find the great treasures I collected years ago.”
Lin Qing jumped up from the table in excitement. “Master, I will not let you down! I will cultivate well and become the second most powerful demonic cultivator in the world!”
The Demon King feigned displeasure. “Only second? Why so little ambition?”
Lin Qing’s lips curled into a smile. On such a cold and detached face, the smile looked like melting snow or the return of spring, possessing a beauty that even a hundred blooming flowers could not match.
“The first is naturally you, Master. A Master is always a Master. How could my talent ever surpass yours?”
The Demon King knew he was being flattered but he was still in a great mood. “Follow me well. I can provide not just spirit stones but even spirit veins.”
“I have always known you are the most powerful, Master.”
Lin Qing’s eyes sparkled as he continued to praise the Demon King until the Demon King’s ears grew soft from the flattery and he called for a stop. Only then did Lin Qing obediently quiet down.
The cultivation world was led by four great sects: the Heavenly Sect, the Ethereal Sect, the Myriad Sound Sect, and the Desolate Hall. This grand competition was held at the Ethereal Sect. A new secret realm suitable for cultivators below the fifth level had been discovered within their territory. Consequently, the sects had agreed to add a team competition inside the realm.
Points would be earned by hunting demonic beasts, gathering rare herbs, and finding treasures. The team with the most points would be declared the winner and could choose any treasure from the treasuries of the four great sects the following day.
The Heavenly Sect sent thirty five elite disciples. Because the group was too large to fly on swords comfortably, the Sect Leader used the sect’s spirit boat for transport. Several branch sects under the Heavenly Sect’s protection also joined the trip. Including the elders, there were over a hundred people on board.
This was the first time Lin Qing had seen so many cultivators since his arrival. In the eyes of outsiders, the Green Lotus Sword Venerable was performing a serious inspection of the boat. When Lin Qing passed them, the chatting cultivators acted like students caught by a dean. Their voices dropped and their topics shifted exclusively to cultivation. Some even vied to perform well in front of him, hoping to be noticed by the Sword Venerable.
In reality, Lin Qing was just wandering around. He was curious about how the spirit boat actually managed to fly. Seeing his interest, the Demon King said, “I have a spirit boat of my own. If you like it, I will give it to you.”
Lin Qing was ecstatic but felt the need to decline politely. “Master, that would be too much.” A spirit boat was the equivalent of a modern private jet. Not just anyone could afford one. He marveled again at how lucky he was to have this Master.
The Demon King replied, “It is just a spirit boat. Look how happy you are. If you do not want it, I will take the offer back.”
“I want it! Of course I want it!” Lin Qing answered quickly.
The Demon King chuckled. “Do not let me hear those polite formalities again. I have only one disciple. What is mine is yours. If you want something in the future, tell me directly and I will get it for you.”
Lin Qing was truly moved. From the bottom of his heart, he said, “Master, you are so kind. I want to be your disciple for the rest of my life.”
The Demon King’s voice turned deep. “Do not talk nonsense. I am not a good person.”
A soft look flashed in Lin Qing’s eyes. “You are only good to me and I will remember your kindness forever.”
How could a demon who once destroyed the world ever be considered a good person? Yet to Lin Qing, he was everything.
