Transmigrated as the Vampire Alpha of the Omega Heroine - Chapter 40
“Our house is getting demolished,” Jiang Nian whispered to Gu Li while following the radio instructions for eye exercises. “Grandma said we’re getting a small apartment in the community, plus compensation at a 1:1.5 ratio for our business space.”
Lately, every waking moment had been spent solving problems or memorizing textbooks. This rare break allowed her to share the good news with Gu Li properly.
Gu Li raised an eyebrow, her fingers still massaging her temples in rhythm with the exercise. Ji Bai worked faster than expected, the matter was already settled.
“That’s good. Have Grandma review the contract carefully before signing.”
“Grandma said the demolition team was very considerate. They explained every clause clearly. Between the compensation and our little store’s earnings, my college tuition is covered now. Most importantly, after moving, we won’t have to worry about those people harassing Grandma and me anymore.” As the exercise moved to the second section, Jiang Nian freed one hand to tug at the alpha’s sleeve.
“Such favorable terms, I don’t believe they’d arrange this specially for our family.”
Gu Li’s wrist twisted, capturing the wandering hand. “I just made some suggestions. The person who helped merely adjusted some conditions. Essentially, you’re getting what your family deserves.”
How modest. Jiang Nian had expected Gu Li to boast a little.
Outside the window, the teacher inspecting the eye exercises passed by briefly. Jiang Nian peeked through one barely-opened eye to steal a glance at Gu Li’s expression.
She was caught red-handed. The alpha, seated further from the window, had noticed the inspector’s departure and was openly keeping her eyes open during the exercise.
“What good does this do for your eyes?” The “kitten,” caught in the act, averted her gaze and tried to pull her hand back.
“What good? We’re almost done anyway.” Gu Li’s other hand had already moved to the fourth exercise position, but her right hand refused to release Jiang Nian’s, instead tracing playful circles on her palm.
As the radio announcement ended, the classroom instantly returned to silent studying. Releasing the hand, Gu Li calmly picked up her deskmate’s workbook to review, shooting a glance that clearly said “get back to your other homework.”
Tyrant.
Jiang Nian stuck her tongue out at Gu Li before resigning herself to solving equations. Meanwhile, the seemingly focused alpha stole sideways glances.
She’d studied that instructional DVD twice and reviewed it once more. Yet recently, Jiang Nian hadn’t been letting her help with rut cycles. Before the symptoms even began, the efficient omega would already be injecting two special suppressants into her arm, enduring the discomfort to continue studying.
They’d agreed on “three strikes,” but it seemed she wasn’t even worthy of a third chance. Watching the omega breeze through several cycles without her mark, though admittedly she couldn’t provide one now anyway left a bitter taste.
She glanced at the countdown to the college entrance exam on the blackboard and did some quick mental math. The exam period would likely coincide with Jiang Nian’s heat cycle this time. She probably wouldn’t be able to rely solely on suppressants then, as poor physical condition could affect test performance.
She could discuss with Dr. Ji in advance to see if her medication withdrawal schedule could be moved up by a day or two.
Just in case Jiang Nian needed her help with marking.
Her grip on the notebook tightened involuntarily, producing a noticeable crinkling sound that seemed especially loud in the quiet study hall, drawing a curious glance from Jiang Nian beside her.
What’s wrong? Did she make too many mistakes on the practice problems?
She obediently grabbed a red pen to make corrections, but the returned notebook was covered in perfect red checkmarks.
Why was Gu Li acting so strange? If there were no mistakes, why was she gripping the book so tightly that it wrinkled?
Senior year students cramming for exams didn’t have as much free time to overthink things like Gu Li, who already had her college admission secured. The towering stacks of textbooks on their desks were burden enough. After finishing homework each day, they’d immediately collapse onto their desks to catch precious sleep. In these time-pressed days, even when Gu Li rode her bike to Jiang Nian’s place, she could hear students reciting English texts behind her.
Jiang Nian’s family hadn’t moved yet. Grandma Jiang said they’d wait until after the exams. Gu Li had checked out the temporary housing in advance, it wasn’t as quiet as their current little home, unsuitable for a senior’s rest.
Everything had to prioritize the exam-bound seniors.
The school auditorium was decorated with a banner reading “18th Birthday Ceremony & 100-Day Countdown to College Entrance Exam Rally.” On the stage stood an inflatable archway labeled “Gateway to Adulthood,” beneath which the principal delivered an impassioned speech that contrasted sharply with the students below some memorizing textbooks, others solving practice problems.
“Congratulations on becoming adults!” The speech reached its conclusion, met with scattered, half-hearted applause from the exhausted students.
Gu Li heard Jiang Nian mutter beside her, “I turned eighteen last semester.”
After the coming-of-age ceremony concluded, everyone followed the student leaders in a pledge rally, then walked through the makeshift adulthood archway, finally gaining some tangible sense of entering life’s new phase.
Time passed even faster now, yet Gu Li became busier than Jiang Nian during exam crunch time, helping at Grandma Jiang’s shop to earn future grandmother’s favor, organizing Jiang Nian’s mistake logs to improve her scores, previewing her own college coursework, studying advanced instructional videos to refine her marking techniques alongside Coach Liu’s diet and exercise regimen, all while assisting Ji Bai in observing Gu Wei’s preferences.
This last task displeased her greatly. With Gu Wei barely home a few days each week, how was she supposed to help Ji Bai decipher the goddess’s tastes?
To make matters worse, the carefully compiled list of preferences was returned covered in red X’s. The alpha’s stern voice came through the phone: “You don’t understand her well enough.”
“Then you’ll have to make the effort yourself. I’m quite busy.”
With exams approaching, she needed to coordinate her medication pause with Dr. Ji and prepare for her third demonstration of proper alpha capabilities.
To prevent another mishap, she had even prepared Plan A, Plan B, and Plan C. Each plan had different start and end points, addressing various needs and potential dissatisfaction from the omega during the marking process. Pages upon pages of meticulous notes made it look like she was conducting some profound research.
She scheduled the medication withdrawal five days before the college entrance exams, stopping early enough to avoid a repeat of last time when her fangs retracted mid-marking. Three days before the exams, she found she could control the extension of her fangs, but Jiang Nian, who was pushing hard with her final exam preparations, showed no intention of asking her alpha for help with marking.
She diligently worked through practice problems, recited texts, and didn’t even experience the usual need for specialized suppressants to control her heat.
Gu Li patiently tutored her every day while silently wondering: This can’t be right. It should be around this time, why is there no sign at all? Is she really planning to take the exams with specialized suppressants?
The question lingered until exam day. Gu Li, like an anxious mother sending her child off to the test center, repeatedly checked the little omega’s belongings and physical condition.
“Are you sure your heat isn’t an issue?” The alpha double-checked that nothing was missing before hesitantly glancing at the other examinees and whispering into Jiang Nian’s ear.
“Hm? Oh, that, I got heat-delay medication from the school clinic, so it’s fine. It won’t come until after the exams.” Jiang Nian took the stationery Gu Li handed her and waved goodbye with a smile.
Leaving the alpha, who had prepared Plans A, B, and C, utterly dumbfounded. How could I forget about that? I even took period-delay pills during my own exams! All that planning for nothing, I was ready to redeem myself.
But there was no chance to prove herself again.
Nearby parents waiting for their kids noticed her pale expression and muttered, “Probably forgot her exam pass. How careless.”
Meanwhile, Jiang Nian, quietly reciting vocabulary and phrases, lined up with the other students at the exam hall entrance. She absentmindedly rubbed her fingers, catching the scent of the heat-delay medication she had taken that morning.
Two more days. Once the exams are over, I’ll have time to learn that. The medication delays my heat by ten days just in time for the graduation dinner. I’ll see Gu Li then, and after the meal, I’ll use this heat to properly teach her how to mark.
She had planned it perfectly. For Gu Li’s sake, she had endured previous heats with suppressants, resisting the urge to bite the alpha’s gland for comfort. She avoided frequent marking attempts to prevent further strain on Gu Li’s already weak gland and spared her the risk of another failure, ensuring her confidence wouldn’t take another hit.
Next time, I’ll make sure my alpha finishes strong.
At this thought, the little omega clenched her fists and gave herself an encouraging wave.
“Alright, you may enter now,” the invigilator said as she returned the ID and exam admission ticket to this determined student. Watching the girl’s retreating figure, she nodded approvingly.
A student like this confident, eyes shining with determination was clearly well-prepared and eager for the exam. Such composure could only come from thorough revision, a sure sign of excellent results to come.
