Transmigrated as the Vampire Alpha of the Omega Heroine - Chapter 36
The alpha holding her wasn’t faring much better. Having never experienced the taste of a mark before, she’d just begun to savor its sweetness when her uncooperative teeth blocked the way forward.
The lavender scent in her mouth had grown so intense it turned bitter, irritating her throat and making the milk tea flavor she’d tasted seem even more deliciously sweet by contrast.
Her fangs refused to extend any further. Reluctantly, the alpha stopped releasing her pheromones, leaving her scent gland at the nape of her neck dissatisfied from being abruptly halted causing Gu Li to feel both swollen and sore.
The warmth of the little kitten in her arms gradually subsided, and this time, there were no complaints like before.
Her hand rested against Jiang Nian’s sweat-dampened back, gently patting.
Gu Li heard her own voice, hoarse as it rang out: “Feeling better?”
The girl’s soft body, guided by every trace of alpha pheromones in her cells, leaned weakly against Gu Li’s chest. Her breath brushed against Gu Li’s ear, provoking another wave of discontent from her scent gland.
This was… troublesome.
In the end, it was Gu Li who knocked on the door, asking the doctor outside for another dose of suppressants to barely keep the S-rank Omega’s heat at bay.
“Cut back on spicy foods.” Specialist Ji reapplied the suppressant patch to Gu Li’s nape and handed her the medicine from the table. “Otherwise, your gland will keep aching.”
“Huh? Okay.” Gu Li nodded, though she didn’t recall any recent changes in her diet.
Wait, that wasn’t entirely true. She had been receiving extra meals from Jiang Nian lately. The food was delicious, but since the omega had a small appetite, a large portion always ended up in Gu Li’s stomach. Still, it hadn’t been too frequent, maybe five or six times this month.
She should talk to Nian about it when she got back. It was too much trouble, especially since she had to wake up early to prepare it.
She had considered discussing the marking issue with Uncle Ji, but with the medication she’d already brought along, she decided to wait until after the exams.
“You’ve been keeping up with the training regimen I gave you, right?” Specialist Ji skimmed through her test results as usual.
“Exams are coming up, so I’ve reduced the training load this week. I’ll go back to the usual intensity after I return from the competition in City A.”
“Mhm, that’s fine. The competition’s the day after tomorrow, right?”
“Yeah, I leave in the afternoon.”
Jiang Nian hadn’t had much time lately to prepare her usual lovingly packed lunches. True to her word, she was throwing herself fully into preparing for her interview. Aside from necessary school hours, she spent most of her time in the art studio. Perhaps the last marking had settled her restless heart her condition had been steadily improving for the past month and a half.
During the days when her heat hadn’t fully subsided, Mu Lan, catching faint whiffs of lavender on Jiang Nian, had joked, “Looks like Nian’s getting that top-student boost.”
But the top student was already on a plane to City A.
Five students from B High had made it to the second round of the competition. Seated in the same row as Gu Li was the class monitor from Class 1, whose loud voice had quieted somewhat on the plane. However, nervousness kept her fidgeting in her seat, even pulling out a small notebook to review past mistakes she hadn’t fully mastered.
“Gu… Gu Li…”
Her shoulder was tapped, and Gu Li lifted her sleep mask to look at the omega in confusion. With her headphones on, she hadn’t caught what the other girl had said earlier. Just as she was about to remove them, the class monitor was quicker reaching over to take off one side of her headphones before leaning in close to speak.
“Don’t… Wen Ru, just talk normally. No need to get so close.” The alpha swiftly blocked the approaching face, straightening up with a businesslike demeanor.
“It’s about that new algorithm you mentioned last time, I still don’t quite get it. Could you explain it to me before the exam the day after tomorrow?” Wen Ru retreated slightly, pointing at the equation in her notebook while looking at Gu Li.
She glanced cautiously at Gu Li before adding, “If now’s not a good time, I could come to your room at the hotel later.”
“It’s fine, we can do it here. I’ll keep my voice down so we don’t disturb others.” The alpha sniffed discreetly, checking that no scent lingered on her before agreeing as she looked at the notebook.
Completely unaware of Wen Ru’s burning gaze while she taught.
A High School was nationally renowned, and this year’s retest venue was arranged there. After spending a day adjusting their conditions, the group entered the battlefield under their team teacher’s watchful eyes.
Doing well in the retest meant a chance to enter the summer camp for national competitions and potentially direct admission to top-tier universities. When Gu Li put down her pen, her hands were trembling with excitement.
Two schoolmates shared the exam hall. After submitting their papers, Gu Li followed them out, heading toward the designated hotel meeting point. Just outside the classroom door, Wen Ru’s hoarse voice called out from behind: “Gu Li… I couldn’t use the method you taught me… I panicked. I might have failed this time.”
Fresh out of the exam with crowds passing by, the alpha felt prickling stares. She walked over to tug at the sobbing omega’s sleeve, half-leading half-pushing her away.
Wen Ru seemed ready to throw herself into Gu Li’s arms for comfort, but the alpha deftly sidestepped. Maintaining a safe meter’s distance, Gu Li scratched her head: “That method only applied to two questions anyway. Don’t overthink it, wipe your tears first.”
She fished tissues from her pocket, but the omega only cried harder. Wen Ru’s voice was naturally loud, and unleashed, her wails nearly echoed across the campus.
“C-can’t you… just hug me to comfort me?” she sobbed. Fortunately, Gu Li had steered them to a secluded corner, otherwise, they’d have drawn a crowd.
“Sorry…” The alpha retreated further, rubbing her nose. “I’m not good at comforting people. Or taking care of them.”
She truly stood there watching until Wen Ru cried herself out before escorting her back to the hotel. Their return flight was at six in the evening, leaving time to rest in their rooms beforehand.
Gu Li packed up her belongings in the hotel and sat on the bed waiting for the return notice. Only now did she have time to turn on her phone, which had been switched off during the exam.
As the screen lit up, several WeChat messages popped up, mostly words of encouragement. After replying with thanks to each one, she opened her pinned contact.
Jiang Nian had sent her a “good luck” message right when the exam started, interspersed with a few other texts. Scrolling to the end, she found a drawing.
The alpha tapped her keyboard to reply but couldn’t resist calling instead, craving the sound of Jiang Nian’s voice.
“Hello~” A sweet, kitten-like voice answered with a playful lilt.
“Nian Nian, I finished the exam. I can come back tonight,” Gu Li briefly updated her.
“Okay~ Did you see the drawing?” Jiang Nian clearly took pride in it and was fishing for praise.
“Yeah, it’s really good. The photo isn’t very clear though, so I’m rushing back to see it in person.” The alpha absentmindedly traced the back of her phone, soothing the ache of missing her.
“You’re so dramatic, hahaha!”
Still, the words pleased the omega, who stood outside the art studio, happily listening to the voice on the other end, savoring their phone call.
The airport in City A had a specialty goods section. The group, having arrived early, browsed curiously. Most were just window-shopping, but Gu Li picked up a tin of lavender-flavored candies and headed to checkout.
This region loved floral-infused foods, especially candies, renowned for their unique flavors.
“Gu Li, you like candy?” Wen Ru, having already composed herself, followed behind and watched with interest.
“Not really.” Gu Li tapped the lid of the metal tin, producing a crisp sound. “There’s a little one who does.”
And who happens to love the same scent as mine.
The call did nothing to ease the alpha’s longing—if anything, it made her more desperate to see Jiang Nian. The flight landed precisely an hour and a half later, and without pause, she boarded Old Wang’s prearranged car, heading straight for the art studio.
When she rushed to the studio door, it suddenly swung open from the inside. Staring back at her was Mu Lan, his face smudged with paint.
Behind him, the instructor was pressing down on Jiang Nian’s bleeding finger while the omega winced.
The scent of milk tea drifted into her nose. Dropping her luggage, Gu Li took over from the instructor and hurried the omega to the clinic downstairs.
The wound was from a scrape against a metal easel, long and deep, likely from an accidental brush against its sharp corner.
The worst part was near the thumb joint, where the skin had peeled back slightly.
Gu Li felt her fangs twitch. She sniffed and looked at the little omega sitting across from her. “You okay?”
She could keep her composure in situations like this, but the pang in her chest was unavoidable.
Saline solution washed over the wound, clearing away debris. Jiang Nian frowned slightly and whispered, “It’s fine. Cuts like this heal fast.”
It vaguely reminded him of their first meeting—she had also refused his offer to walk her home while covered in wounds large and small, smiling as she said it was nothing, that these injuries would heal soon enough.
But the gash on her right thumb was far from shallow, requiring stitches. Gu Li patiently held her in his arms, carefully shielding the omega’s eyes from the sight of the needle.
“At least it’s the right hand. Would’ve been troublesome if it affected your drawing,” the kitten-like omega in his arms joked nonchalantly, completely unfazed.
With her hand numbed by anesthesia, she felt no pain during the stitching. Nestled in the comforting scent of someone she adored, she felt even more at ease than when she’d first been injured.
Her free hand fumbled around Gu Li’s pockets until she grasped something cool and smooth—a tin of lavender candies.
Gu Li frowned as the doctor finished the final stitch and applied the bandage, only to feel something odd press against his cheek.
“I want some,” the kitten said, shaking the jingling tin insistently in front of him.
Taking it, Gu Li popped open the lid and poured a single candy into the omega’s palm. The pastel-purple sweet, embedded with tiny lavender buds, disappeared into her mouth with a flick of her delicate tongue.
She tucked it into her right cheek, puffing out slightly as she grinned and stretched her left arm toward him, whining playfully, “Keep holding me…”
