Transmigrated as the Vampire Alpha of the Omega Heroine - Chapter 26
School B didn’t advocate posting exam results publicly, with the only red honor roll downstairs displaying last year’s college admission scores of graduating seniors. However, each homeroom teacher would quietly compile their own class’s grades and rankings, posting them on the classroom bulletin board.
As soon as the final exam results were tallied, the class representative was already looking for a spot to post the familiar sheet on the bulletin board. Many students crowded around to check their performance, as it would determine whether they could enjoy a good New Year at home.
“Jiang Nian, your math score improved so much this time, and your other subjects too,” Mu Lan said, quickly spotting their rankings thanks to her height advantage and sharp eyesight.
Gu Li’s results went without saying there was no need to search, as her name was right at the top. Just comparing her scores in Chinese, math, and English was enough to bruise anyone’s ego.
“Because I have a private tutor,” Jiang Nian said flatly, glancing at Gu Li.
Many of the final exam questions had been predicted by Gu Li, and she had forced Jiang Nian to study every problem she struggled with. The nearly week-long period of Gu Li’s rut also known as Jiang Nian’s hellish training had left the alpha refreshed while the omega was mentally and physically drained.
“Why do you seem unhappy?” Mu Lan asked, puzzled.
Gu Li, standing beside Jiang Nian, also gave the little kitten a curious look.
Wasn’t she happy about improving her grades?
Even during their morning hug, she had been sullen, though she still dutifully held on for the full ten minutes before pulling away with a visibly downcast expression.
It was strange, especially since Jiang Nian had successfully presented as an omega, and both of them had silently accepted the continuation of their “task.”
“I’m fine,” Jiang Nian muttered. As the bell for class was about to ring, she tugged at Gu Li’s uniform and squeezed out of the crowd around the bulletin board, obediently returning to her seat.
Her nape had been itching since morning, and her chest felt inexplicably tight.
The homeroom teacher entered with a stack of graded papers and winter break assignments, handing them to the class representative before launching into a lecture about holiday precautions. She emphasized avoiding dangerous activities while also urging everyone not to waste a single second, pushing them to strive for the college entrance exams.
“The papers aren’t all handed back yet, but you should have seen your scores on the bulletin board. Some students improved significantly, while others have been slipping,” she said, adjusting her glasses. “I think those who regressed got too comfortable in their seats, chatting too much with their neighbors instead of focusing on studying.”
She then picked up an extra copy of the ranking list and slowly scanned down the names. “So, before the new semester begins, I’ve decided to shake things up, we’re rearranging all the seats.”
“Aww” Even the class representative still distributing papers groaned. High school textbooks were heavy, and moving seats was a huge hassle. Worse, no one could guarantee their new desk mate would be better than the current one. The teacher really did whatever came to mind.
But the homeroom teacher had clearly come prepared, she was even holding a pre-made seating chart in her hand. Instead of starting with the top-performing students, she began with those at the bottom of the class, scattering the most talkative groups into the four most isolated corners.
Mu Lan’s grades weren’t terrible, but they were below average. After all, he had started studying late. He sat nervously in his seat, fearing he might be moved and lose his prime front-row spot for observing the drama. However, when the teacher finished calling names without mentioning his, he finally let out a sigh of relief.
Only after the noisiest students had obediently switched seats did the teacher continue her grand reshuffling: “For the remaining students, I’ll just offer my suggestions for ideal seatmates. You can choose whether to follow them or not. If you have someone specific in mind, you can ask them directly. If they agree, I’ll arrange the switch.”
She went through her suggested pairings one by one. Most students followed her recommendations and moved accordingly. When it was Gu Li’s turn, the teacher suggested she sit with Jiang Bai, the second-highest scorer in the class, to motivate each other.
Mu Lan lounged indifferently in his seat, watching classmates shuffle around with their books. Since both he and Jiang Nian were art-track students with steadily improving grades, the teacher had no intention of moving them.
But then, out of nowhere, his perfectly settled seatmate suddenly stood up after hearing Gu Li’s new placement. “Teacher, I’d like to sit with Gu Li.”
Jiang Nian was the first and only one to take the teacher’s “suggestions” as actual suggestions, treating her polite offer to negotiate as a real invitation.
The teacher looked up from her list, scanning Jiang Nian’s ranking, 15th in class, 256th in the school, with mediocre grades across the board. As an art student, she wasn’t exactly ideal for pairing with top performers. Frowning, the teacher was about to dissuade her when Gu Li, who had already started packing to move beside Jiang Bai, spoke up: “Teacher, I agree to sit with Jiang Nian.”
Well, with her own words still fresh in the air and both parties in agreement, the teacher could hardly object. Reluctantly, she paired the second and third-ranked students together and silently approved Gu Li’s request.
Gu Li carried her books to Jiang Nian’s side, settling in as naturally as she had during every study session when swapping seats with Mu Lan. She then turned a beaming smile toward Mu Lan, who wore a complicated expression.
“Then where do I sit, teacher?” Mu Lan asked pitifully, turning back to the homeroom teacher.
“Here,” she replied without looking up, pointing to a spot while focusing on other students’ relocations.
Despite all his calculations, Young Master Mu had never anticipated these two would outright ask to sit together. Defeated, he lost his prime gossip-watching spot. With one last longing glance at his former seat, he resentfully gathered his books and trudged forward.
Jiang Nian sat at her desk, helping to neatly stack Gu Li’s books before stuffing all the items she’d brought into the drawer. Then she rested her head sideways on the desk, gazing at Gu Li’s profile. “My chest felt a bit uncomfortable earlier,” she said.
Gu Li pressed her hand against Jiang Nian’s forehead, detecting something unusual in the temperature.
“But it seems better now.” The kitten-like girl shifted her head to rest on Gu Li’s arm. The scent of lavender from Gu Li’s uniform drifted over as Jiang Nian turned her face the other way, exposing the well-developed omega gland on her neck wrapped in suppressant patches yet completely vulnerable before Gu Li.
Jiang Nian reached out, guiding Gu Li’s hand from her forehead to the back of her neck, then gently pressed it there. Even through the suppressant patch, Gu Li could feel the soft omega gland pulsing rhythmically like a lively little frog. With Jiang Nian’s warm cheek pressed against her arm through the autumn uniform, Gu Li swallowed hard for no apparent reason.
“Deskmate, could you massage it for me?” The kitten murmured so softly her voice nearly disappeared in the clamor of classmates rearranging seats. Realizing this, she placed her own hand over Gu Li’s, guiding their combined touch to knead her nape.
Gu Li felt the heat radiating through the suppressant patch. After massaging for a while, her face burned fiercely. She spread her fingers, switching to gentle palm circles. Their seats by the classroom’s back door were secluded, with tall stacks of reference books forming a perfect screen from prying eyes.
“Nian Nian, I think your heat is starting.” Gu Li withdrew her hand to tilt the kitten’s face upward already flushed pink. During Jiang Nian’s first heat, she’d immediately sought comfort through an alpha’s marking. But now there was nothing. Gu Li bent to rummage through Jiang Nian’s bag for omega suppressants.
Before the omega pheromones could leak, Gu Li rolled up Jiang Nian’s sleeve and administered the injection while classmates remained unaware. Unlike alpha pheromone comfort, these hospital-issued suppressants brought natural discomfort during administration.
Jiang Nian buried her face in Gu Li’s chest, barely suppressing a whimper. Gu Li removed the needle, carefully massaging the injection site. Retrieving a spare uniform from her desk, she draped it over Jiang Nian’s head while waiting for the suppressant to take effect.
With rhythmic taps on Jiang Nian’s pale elbow, Gu Li secretly traced little hearts on her wrist. Relief washed over her, thank goodness she’d switched seats with Mu Lan earlier. Otherwise, Mu Lan would have been the alpha beside Jiang Nian during this heat. The thought made Gu Li’s gaze drift toward Mu Lan, now sulking in her new seat up front.
Alpha possessiveness blended with the clarity of acknowledged feelings. Even while holding her cherished omega, Gu Li found herself nursing irrational jealousy over mere hypotheticals.
Poor Young Master Mu hadn’t even warmed his seat before he found himself awkwardly chatting with the brawny alpha guy beside him in his new spot, when an inexplicable chill suddenly ran down his spine.
He sneezed, spraying the burly fellow’s face with droplets of saliva, marking an extremely unfortunate beginning to his high school life with his second desk mate.
