- Chapter 15 - Jiang Nian, You're So Hot
Uncle Gu: The elderly woman doesn’t have any external injuries. It seems she’s just suffered some psychological shock, so I didn’t call a doctor.
Gu Li: Alright, please take those people to the police station as soon as possible.
Gu Li dimmed her phone screen and turned her gaze back to the small shop.
Under the dim light of the store, the grandmother and granddaughter clung tightly to each other. Gu Li stood at the somewhat cluttered entrance, reluctant to interrupt them.
She bent down and carefully picked up a few discarded snack bags, placing them near the shop’s entrance.
The sky had already darkened. She steadied the bicycle she had left behind earlier, her toes tapping restlessly against the ground.
Should she go in?
Or should she just leave for now?
She hesitated outside.
Inside, Jiang Nian trembled as she held her grandmother. When Grandma Jiang had said she almost didn’t get to see her again, it felt as if Jiang Nian had truly experienced the pain of losing her.
Her entire body was frighteningly cold. She clutched her grandmother’s sleeve, trying hard to hold back her tears, but they still fell uncontrollably.
It had been so close last time, her father had saved Grandma, and this time, that man in black had protected her. But what about next time? What if there hadn’t been someone like him this time? The more she thought about it, the more panicked she became. Grandma was shaking too, and the two of them patted each other’s backs, trying to give each other and themselves some strength.
Grandma Jiang felt they had stayed in this position for too long and tried to pull Jiang Nian inside to sit down. But before she could succeed, she noticed something was wrong with the girl in her arms.
“Nian Nian” Her aged legs nearly gave way under Jiang Nian’s weight, but the girl’s trembling only grew worse.
Suddenly, Jiang Nian let out a muffled sob and clutched the back of her neck, collapsing into Grandma Jiang’s embrace. Gu Li, who had been standing outside, rushed in and pulled her away from the old woman.
“It hurts…” The girl’s voice was hoarse, like a kitten’s whimper.
The back of her neck burned as if it had been torn open. She was dragged out of her grandmother’s arms, only to catch the faint scent of lavender. The fragrance wrapped around her nape, seeping through her scent patch and into her glands, trying to suppress the inexplicable pain.
Driven by instinct, Jiang Nian reached to tear off her own scent patch. But halfway through, the agony like having the skin and flesh of her neck ripped apart, forced her to stop. Her small hand shrank back, only to return again to cover the pain.
Yet her palm couldn’t fully block the scent. The lavender slipped past, invading her glands as intended.
It wasn’t enough. This wasn’t even the true scent of pheromones, just the lingering fragrance on Gu Li’s body from her own. Her head drooped weakly against Gu Li’s shoulder, her lips slowly moving toward the scent patch on the back of Gu Li’s neck.
“Nian Nian?”
Gu Li only felt something damp and smooth brush against her nape, followed by tiny teeth catching the edge of her scent patch, tugging it bit by bit.
Grandma Jiang stared in stunned silence. She stepped forward to stop Jiang Nian but froze when she saw her granddaughter’s bloodshot eyes. “Grandma… it hurts…”
“Call an ambulance.”
Gu Li lifted the girl into her arms and spoke urgently to Grandma Jiang.
The person in her arms still struggled, trying to reach for the back of Gu Li’s neck. One hand clutched her own nape while the other desperately tugged at Gu Li’s scent patch.
She wanted to release that scent a little more, just a bit more, and her pain might lessen slightly.
The person in her arms was burning up. Gu Li had both hands occupied holding her, powerless to stop Jiang Nian from tearing off her inhibitor patch even if she wanted to. Scanning the area, she carried Jiang Nian to the convenience store counter, gently setting her down before bending over to offer herself fully. Now Jiang Nian’s hands could reach the back of her neck.
Small, feverish fingers pinched the corner previously held between teeth and yanked the obstruction away fiercely.
Jiang Nian buried her face against the scent gland that had inadvertently released traces of lavender pheromones, then collapsed dizzily against Gu Li.
When something soft touched the gland on her nape, Gu Li shuddered violently. Carefully cradling Jiang Nian from behind, she tentatively called, “Nian Nian? Nian Nian?”
The girl in her arms neither responded nor moved. Forgetting her embarrassment at having her gland kissed, Gu Li urgently asked Grandma Jiang, who had gone to the back room to call an ambulance “Has the ambulance arrived?”
Leaning on her cane, Grandma Jiang hurried over anxiously: “They just dispatched one, it’ll take about fifteen minutes. What’s happening? What’s wrong with my Nian Nian?” Her words tumbled out as fast as her unsteady steps. When she saw her granddaughter’s tightly knitted brows clear signs of terrible pain her heart broke, tears streaming uncontrollably.
Gu Li forcibly steadied herself and turned to comfort the old woman: “She should be fine, please don’t worry. Let’s wait for the doctors to assess her. Right now, she’s burning up where are your wet towels? We need to cool her down physically.”
Having found her anchor, Grandma Jiang led Gu Li to get damp towels. Jiang Nian remained cradled in arms, whimpering in pain but not thrashing, passively accepting the cooling towel that swept across her cheeks and neck—avoiding sensitive areas like her nape before finally resting on her scorching forehead.
By the ambulance’s arrival, the small figure had turned lobster-red like a boiled shrimp. As they lifted her onto the stretcher, separated from the lavender scent, her eyes fluttered open weakly: “Don’t go.”
Gu Li, who had been about to sit with Grandma Jiang in back, froze mid-step and slowly returned. Jiang Nian’s face was full of grievance as she weakly strained toward Gu Li: “You’re not allowed to leave.”
“The patient needs your pheromones to stabilize her emotions. Come hold her,” the EMT assessed, recognizing textbook pheromone dysregulation. The alpha’s torn inhibitor patch released faint traces of scent, yet the patient insisted on her proximity clear evidence of effective emotional regulation.
Jiang Nian buried her face against Gu Li’s chest, mumbling complaints: “Your clothes… blocking the scent…” while rubbing her face messily against the fabric.
As medics performed tests and inserted IV lines, Gu Li gently stroked the feverish kitten’s head: “Jiang Nian… you’re so hot.”
“It’s an information hormone imbalance caused by excessive emotional fluctuations. She’s on the verge of differentiating into an omega. Did something particularly triggering happen today? There was also a strong collision with another omega’s information hormones, leading to the imbalance. It’s not too serious, but she’ll need to stay hospitalized for a few days.” After prescribing treatment, the doctor adjusted the speed of Jiang Nian’s IV drip.
“What omega’s information hormones?” Gu Li asked in confusion.
“Although the girl’s grandmother is elderly with somewhat atrophied glands, she should be an omega. Under significant emotional stress, she can still release some stimulating information hormones.” The doctor nodded at Gu Li and Granny Jiang before heading to another ward.
Granny Jiang sat by Jiang Nian’s bedside, dazedly covering the back of her neck. She had long passed her estrus cycles and hadn’t used suppressant patches in ages. Never did she imagine that Nian Nian’s current condition was triggered by her.
Clutching Jiang Nian’s thin hand, tears streamed down her face again.
First, she had harmed her son because of herself, and now she was harming her granddaughter too.
Almost instantly, Gu Li understood what this kind-hearted old woman was thinking.
Her hand slowly reached out and patted the trembling back of Granny Jiang’s hand: “Nian Nian would be so happy that you’re safe and sound. Please don’t blame yourself, alright?”
Granny Jiang looked up at Gu Li.
“It’s not your fault, it’s those people who are at fault.” Gu Li enunciated clearly as she wiped Granny Jiang’s tears with a tissue. “Nian Nian’s IV will take a while. Why don’t you go back and rest for a bit? I’ll stay here with her.”
“No, I should stay,” Granny Jiang hesitated.
“Then how about you rest on that bed over there? I’ll set it up for you. No matter what, you need to take care of your health at your age.”
Without waiting for a reply, Gu Li busied herself preparing the hospital cot. She even took out a suppressant patch from her bag originally meant for Jiang Nian and applied it for Granny Jiang, who was worried her information hormones might affect Jiang Nian again.
Being elderly, Granny Jiang couldn’t stay up too late and was eventually persuaded to rest on the nearby bed.
It was almost midnight. Gu Li propped her chin on her hand, watching the last of the IV drip finish before calling the nurse to remove the needle.
The little figure in bed had cooled down considerably. She placed her hand on Jiang Nian’s cheek.
“Always ending up in the hospital.” Her words carried a hint of frustration as her fingertip traced Jiang Nian’s nose, slowly outlining her brows and eyes.
No matter how hard she tried to protect her, she still ached for the hardships Jiang Nian faced. Having lived in this body for so long, she had naturally adopted the identity of this world’s native, growing increasingly attached to those around her.
Gu Li stood up to tuck Jiang Nian in before settling into a chair nearby to sleep, not daring to go too far in case something happened in the early hours.
She slowly sat down, draping her school uniform over herself like a blanket. With one last glance at the figure in bed, she closed her eyes.
“Ring ring ring” the phone in her pocket kept ringing, unbearably loud.
Who could be calling so early in the morning? Some real estate agent pushing sales?
Frowning, Gu Li pulled out her phone and answered: “Hello?”
“Gu Li? The butler said you didn’t come home last night? The driver just told me you were at Jiang Nian’s place? Did you stay overnight at their house? Mom thinks you two shouldn’t go too far before coming of age.” Gu Wei’s voice exploded in his ears like thunder.
Gu Li hastily stood up and ran out the door: “No, no! What are you all imagining!”
