Transmigrated as the Heroine’s Perfect Alpha - Chapter 10
“Search result: Frustration Index: 5; Understanding Index: 1. Please keep it up!”
Xie Ling leaned against the hospital corridor wall, feeling irritable and restless as she glanced at the mud stain on her knee. Beneath the fabric of her trousers, her knee was throbbing with a burning pain.
Just moments ago, she had been so anxious to carry the pale-faced Ji Xue to the hospital that she missed a step and fell before the entrance. It was a pity that even while kneeling on one knee, she had not managed to drop the female lead.
Sometimes, the “Little Anti” system was right. After getting shocked enough times, one eventually gets used to it.
Compared to a human life, being electrocuted was not such a big deal. At least, that is what she told herself.
The problem was that as the female lead, protected by the protagonist’s halo, Ji Xue was absolutely not going to die so easily. Why was she performing some useless, blind self-sacrifice? You have to make sure the other person actually appreciates it.
Thinking this, Xie Ling looked up, took a deep breath, and shook her head. She had been too impulsive.
She peeled herself away from the tiled wall, steadied herself, and limped down the corridor.
Her navy blue sports car was parked in the hospital’s outdoor lot. As she fished the keys from her jacket pocket, she noticed the scrapes on the back of her hand. Just as she was about to let out a string of curses to vent her frustration, the headlights of the car opposite her flashed.
Knowing Lin Man’s personality, she would never sit idly by and watch Ji Xue truly be taken away. However, as a CEO with a thousand things to juggle, Lin Man’s workload was staggering.
So, even though she could not accept the fact that Xie Ling had taken Ji Xue away, she had been tied up with two work calls and a short video conference. Fortunately, the private hospital Xie Ling chose happened to be one in which the Lin family held shares. All it took was one notification, and there would be countless eyes watching the annoying Xie Ling on her behalf.
Xie Ling had remembered the Lin family’s influence over this hospital when she was paying the bill, but it did not bother her. After all, she did not have any romantic intentions toward Ji Xue. The idea that the innocent do not need to prove their innocence was perfect for self-comfort.
“Little Anti” chimed in with a happy broadcast: “Congratulations! Frustration Index +1.”
Xie Ling closed her eyes tightly and turned to look at the approaching Lin Man. To be honest, she was happy the index was rising, but she really did not want to look at Lin Man’s expressionless face. Objectively speaking, she was good-looking, but subjectively, looking at her just made Xie Ling’s blood boil.
I must have the housekeeper brew some cooling tea when I get home.
Lin Man, completely unaware that she was annoying Xie Ling, walked over with a suave, arrogant expression. She got so close that she was almost pressing against Xie Ling, who quickly shifted away.
“Why do you have to go against me? Xie Ling, do you really not know what fear is?”
Xie Ling’s brows slowly knit together. As the former creator, she certainly knew what Lin Man intended to do to her, but being warned in such an arrogant manner felt genuinely unpleasant.
She had created this world, yet here she was, being threatened by her own character. Talk about the tables turning; her luck was truly terrible this year.
But admitting defeat was impossible.
“Fear what? Fear that you do not like me? Or that I cannot compete with you?” Xie Ling lowered her eyelids, curled her lips, and intentionally put on a provoking look. “By the way, did you find what you were looking for last time?”
“What?” Lin Man clearly did not expect Xie Ling to ask this. The last time she went to Xie Ling’s place to get Ji Xue, it was an impulsive move. She had considered sending someone to sneak in at night, but before she could act, Ji Xue had contacted her saying the item was found.
So, that item was found by Xie Ling?
Does this mean they have been secretly in contact behind my back?
Xie Ling stared into Lin Man’s eyes and heard a notification in her ear: “Daily index increase limit reached. The system prohibits farming points!”
The system notification signaled that she could no longer gain points for the day.
Only four points and it is already capped? At this rate, it will take a month just to get four points a day. With this chaotic plot pace, I have to keep doing this for another twenty-four days. Xie Ling felt a wave of exhaustion wash over her.
Since that was the case, she should get out of here.
Xie Ling could not care about provoking Lin Man anymore; she opened the car door and slid in. To her surprise, someone grabbed the door again.
She was speechless. This was the classic move Lin Man used when chasing a lover in the original story. Why was it being used on her? She had already dealt with this twice in one morning.
Forget it, there is no time to think about that now. The priority was to get home and study how to increase the Understanding Index. Currently, the two values were five points apart, and that imbalance was not a good thing.
“Please let go, I am leaving.” Xie Ling fastened her seatbelt and started the car. She looked down, feeling lucky that it was her left leg that was injured and not her right; otherwise, she would not even be able to step on the gas.
The parking spaces on either side were empty. Xie Ling gritted her teeth and hit the gas. Lin Man had no choice but to slam the car door shut, snort coldly, and step back.
Xie Ling had not intended to act this way, but considering all the misunderstandings Lin Man already had about her, adding one more did not matter. She might as well be reckless, as the current index was far more important than her reputation.
As the car slowly drove out of the parking lot, Xie Ling dialed back a missed call, but the voice prompt said the number was busy. She had to pull over to the side to send a text before turning around to head home.
What she did not know was that after she left, Lin Man stood in place, watching the direction she disappeared in, and murmured, “Interesting.”
Without realizing it, Xie Ling had successfully caught the attention of the domineering CEO.
When she returned to the Xie residence, He Rong was sitting at the long table in front of the balcony with her laptop. The curtains were drawn tight, blocking out the bright sunlight.
Xie Ling gave a strange look, limped to the living room sofa, and sat down.
He Rong, who had been looking stern, immediately closed her laptop upon seeing Xie Ling’s state and hurried over. Chen Xia brought over a medical kit, and they carefully squatted down to disinfect and bandage her.
Seeing her hand and knee heavily wrapped, Xie Ling did not know whether to laugh or cry.
He Rong, however, looked displeased. “How did you end up like this? Were you not just going shopping? Why did you fall like this?”
“This is a long story. It was just an accident; I was careless.” Xie Ling looked at Mother He’s angry expression and knew she was just worried.
Sigh, what a pity. After that thought, Xie Ling felt a jolt of alarm. Why did she feel that it was a pity?
In the original story, what was the fate of Mother He, who was determined to avenge her daughter after Xie Ling’s death?
Did she go mad, or did she die?
After the Xie family went bankrupt and Xie Hongfei passed away from a brain hemorrhage, He Rong gave her personal savings to her two sons. And then?
Xie Ling rubbed her temples, leaning back against the cushion, her heart sinking.
Later, He Rong brought a handbag full of sulfuric acid to the wedding of Lin Man and Ji Xue to avenge her husband and daughter.
Ji Xue, possessing the protagonist’s undying skill, was naturally unharmed. Instead, the suicidal He Rong got her wish, falling from the luxury cruise ship into the vast ocean, disappearing without a trace.
No! No! No! Realizing the future of the Xie family, Xie Ling’s forehead instantly broke out in a cold sweat.
He Rong saw her daughter, who was fine a moment ago, suddenly change color, her eyes wide. She reached out and poked her head, nervously saying, “Why are you staring suddenly? You scared me.”
“Nothing, I just suddenly remembered something bad.” Xie Ling quickly grabbed He Rong’s poking finger, stood up, picked up the glass of water on the coffee table, and downed it.
He Rong looked at her skeptically. “Really? You are even sweating? If you feel uncomfortable anywhere, you must tell me. Do not be afraid to see a doctor, do you hear me? Your father’s company has a full staff physical exam in two days. Since you start working the day after, you should be able to make it. You must go with them!”
“Okay, okay, I will go for a check-up. Then…” Xie Ling pointed at herself and then at the floor upstairs. “Can I go back to my room to change?”
He Rong glanced at the mud-stained trousers and nodded. “Go.”
Xie Ling glanced at He Rong’s phone, knowing she would surely be calling a doctor in a moment. Not dawdling, she bypassed the stairs and took the side elevator to the second floor.
Sure enough, before the elevator doors even closed, He Rong was already exchanging pleasantries with someone on the phone: “Dr. Jiang…”
Back in her bedroom, Xie Ling changed into home wear and tossed her dirty clothes into the laundry basket by the door for the housekeeper to collect.
“Can you give me a hint on how to increase the Understanding Index?” Xie Ling sat in her computer chair, her right hand resting on the pink keyboard.
“Little Anti”: “The ‘Hoodlum’ theme pack seven-day trial has expired. Please choose to renew or cancel.”
Xie Ling rolled her eyes, chose to cancel without hesitation, and repeated, “How exactly do I increase the Understanding Index?”
“Little Anti”: “Sorry, this value is only bound to you; we do not have the right to interpret it.”
“No right to interpret? Then how are you calculating the score?” Xie Ling felt slightly better hearing the rhythmic, emotionless electronic voice.
“Little Anti”: “Simply put, I cannot tell you.”
The system remained stubbornly unhelpful.
Xie Ling rolled her eyes again, thinking that if the system had said that earlier, she would not have asked a second time. The pink keyboard clicked beneath her fingertips, crisp and clean—different from the one she had used in her previous life, which was on the verge of falling apart.
Having been here for many days, Xie Ling had fallen in love with life here and the family atmosphere. Although it was a bit more formal and distant than she had imagined, the feeling of being cared about was truly addictive.
If this family were to be destroyed like in the novel one day, Xie Ling could not bear to think about it. The God’s eye view and experiencing it firsthand were completely different concepts.
Forget it, wishful thinking will not get any results. Xie Ling bent down, picked up the shoulder bag she had carried, took out her phone and the hospital bill, snapped a photo, and began searching for the number she had memorized.
The number was one Ji Xue had given her proactively before entering the hospital. Xie Ling had wondered why she gave it, but before she could ask, the system shocked her feet for carrying the heroine in a bridal style. Otherwise, she would not have tripped and knelt on the stairs, leaving deep bruises on her shins.
Perhaps because Ji Xue’s condition had improved, the friend request was accepted as soon as it was sent.
Xie Ling looked at the chat window, opened her album, selected the photo, and hit send.
It was not that she was being rich and unkind; it was just that the system was watching. Spending her own money to help the heroine was against the rules, so she had to ask for the medical expenses back.
