- Chapter 51.1 - Don't Get Mad at Your Wife
Early in the morning, Huo Jianan heard voices in the hospital corridor while she was half-asleep. It was Xiaoman’s voice.
“Miss Meng, the Young Miss and the Young Madam are still asleep… They slept well last night, and the Young Madam’s fever didn’t return… Yes, yes, I won’t wake the Young Miss. I won’t disturb the Young Miss and the Young Madam’s rest.”
Huo Jianan opened her eyes and stretched lazily in bed.
As she stretched, she suddenly realized something was wrong. Wolfie had been holding her last night, clinging to her like a sloth and insisting on sleeping pressed against her.
Huo Jianan glanced at the empty space beside her and stubbornly lifted the quilt for a second look—no one, no Wolfie.
Turning her head, she saw the opposite bed covered by a mass of glossy, seaweed-like black hair that obscured most of the delicate face, revealing only a corner of a jade-like chin. Wasn’t Wolfie sound asleep in her own bed?
Huo Jianan: “…” Could it be that their passionate kiss last night was just a dream?
Propping herself up on her elbows, Huo Jianan texted Xiaoman: [ I’m awake. Bring me my clothes. ]
A few minutes later, Xiaoman appeared at Huo Jianan’s bedside, arms laden with clothes.
Huo Jianan washed up and changed into a well-fitted outfit that accentuated her neat and spirited demeanor.
“Young Miss, Madam and Miss Meng wish to visit you at the hospital. Should I inform them that you’re awake?”
Huo Jianan checked the time—it was nearly 8 a.m. Her grandmother had likely been awake for hours, but she probably hadn’t eaten breakfast yet, wanting to share the meal with her.
“Tell Grandmother and Sister Meng that the Young Madam and I are both awake.”
“Right away, Young Miss.” Xiaoman turned to make the call.
Huo Jianan wheeled her chair to Ruan Nianning’s bedside. The young woman must not have slept properly for days; she was now in such a deep slumber that she hadn’t even noticed her arm had slipped out from under the covers.
Huo Jianan gently tucked the arm back under the quilt. Ruan Nianning turned over and continued sleeping, her breathing heavy and snoring softly like a little pig.
Huo Jianan’s lips curved into a smile as she leaned down to tuck stray strands of hair behind Ruan Nianning’s ear.
After waiting another twenty minutes, assuming her grandmother and Sister Meng would arrive soon, Huo Jianan finally woke Ruan Nianning. “Nianning, Nianning, wake up. It’s time to get up.”
Ruan Nianning groaned, mumbled something sleepily, and slowly opened her eyes.
“Did you sleep well, Little Piggy?”
“Okay,” Ruan Nianning’s voice was a little hoarse as she woke up, her sleepy eyes giving her a slightly dazed look. “Why do you call me ‘Little Piggy’?”
Huo Jianan smiled indulgently, reaching out to pinch Ruan Nianning’s soft, fair cheeks. “Aren’t you just a drowsy little piggy right now?”
Ruan Nianning’s complexion had recovered most of its color. After a night’s sleep, her skin looked plump and hydrated, soft and springy to the touch.
“Hmph,” Ruan Nianning turned her head in mock protest. “You’re squishing my face!”
“Nonsense. Your face is so delicate—it has plenty of room to grow.”
Ruan Nianning glared at her, swatting her hand away. “Ugh, stop teasing me!”
Huo Jianan didn’t take offense. “Get up. Grandmother and Sister Meng are coming to the hospital to visit us.”
Just as Ruan Nianning finished getting ready, Grandmother Huo and Sister Meng arrived.
Ruan Nianning wore a long coat over her hospital gown, while Huo Jianan had completely shed her patient’s clothes, now dressed in elegant casual attire.
“Grandmother, how are you and Young Madam recovering?” Grandmother Huo asked.
“I’m completely better!” Huo Jianan replied. “Look, I’ve even taken off my hospital gown. Nianning is much improved too—no more fever, and we both slept well last night. Grandmother, did you sleep well? Don’t worry about us anymore—we’re fine, really!”
Grandmother Huo carefully examined her granddaughter. Nannan was indeed much better, looking spirited and full of energy. She then glanced at Ruan Nianning beside her, noting her improved complexion as well.
Grandmother Huo smiled and nodded. “That’s good. I slept well last night too.”
The family ate breakfast at the hospital room’s dining table.
“Huo Jianan said, “Grandmother, you and Sister Meng should go back first. There’s so much work at the company; they can’t do without you.”
Grandmother was getting on in years, and everyone knew she wouldn’t be comfortable in a hotel, having grown accustomed to the comforts of home.
“The company can’t run smoothly without both you and Xien?”
“That’s not what I meant at all! Grandmother is the most amazing. Under your leadership, Huo Corporation became Changbin’s foremost conglomerate.”
Grandmother Huo chuckled. “Flatterer. It was your Great-Grandfather who was truly remarkable. I dare not compare myself to him.”
Meng Xien smiled. “Aunt Xu is a woman who outshines men. Alongside Old Master Huo, you both are kings of the business world.”
“You two little rascals, stop flattering me together!” Grandmother Huo laughed, serving them both generously. She then turned to Ruan Nianning. “Nianning, eat more. You need to replenish your strength now. Don’t worry about dieting.”
“Thank you, Grandmother,” Ruan Nianning replied.
Ruan Nianning had always viewed Huo Zhujun and Xu Weiyi as her mortal enemies. When she used to eat with Xu Weiyi at the same table, she remained cold and silent, acting like an outsider looking in. Even when she offered thanks, her words were stiff and perfunctory, her face maintaining the polite smile of a junior, while her heart burned with loathing and resentment.
But Huo Jianan told her she had taken revenge on the wrong person, making it clear that Xu Weiyi wasn’t her true enemy. Ruan Nianning’s feelings toward Xu Weiyi shifted completely; instead of hatred, she now felt only remorse.
Hearing this heartfelt “Thank you, Grandmother,” Xu Weiyi couldn’t help but look up and give Ruan Nianning a closer look.
“Let Nannan stay with you in the hospital for a couple more days to help you recover properly. If you enjoy acting, have Nannan set up a film company for you. You can make movies under your own company instead of working so hard.”
Before Ruan Nianning could respond, Huo Jianan exclaimed, “Really? Thank you, Grandmother! You’re the best!”
Grandmother Huo chuckled, “Look how excited you are! Nannan, we all know your temper. Finding a wife who can tolerate your bad moods isn’t easy.”
“I know, Grandmother. I’ll try to control my temper,” Huo Jianan replied. She knew exactly what her grandmother meant by “bad temper.” Unlike the other Huo Jianan, she didn’t possess that reckless, fiery spirit.
“Aunt Xu,” Meng Xien said, “Jianan’s temper has improved greatly since her marriage. You can rest assured.”
Grandmother Huo nodded. “That’s good. I never would have expected it, but it’s a good thing. And Nannan, you must treat your wife well. You can argue, but only minor quarrels. As an Alpha, you should be magnanimous when the occasion calls for it.”
She glanced at Ruan Nianning again. “Talk things out face-to-face and resolve issues promptly. This running away from home… I don’t understand it. Sigh, your other grandmother used to do the same thing when she was angry.”
Ruan Nianning flushed, realizing Xu Weiyi was subtly reprimanding her. She lowered her head and ate in silence.
Huo Jianan sensed she had overheard something intriguing. With a nosy expression, she asked, “Did my other grandmother also run away from home?”
Grandmother Huo’s usually composed face showed rare discomfort. “Stop asking so many questions. Such matters have nothing to do with you youngsters.”
“Grandmother, just tell us! Did Grandmother Zhi argue with you and storm off in a huff? Please, just tell us!”
“Ahem, that was so long ago. Why bring it up now? Anyway, you’ll stay in the hospital for two days to recover. If you’re discharged the day after tomorrow, you can both return to Changbin for the weekend—the first weekend of the new year.”
Huo Jianan: “Sure, let’s spend the weekend together.”
After dinner, Huo Jianan saw off Grandmother Huo and Sister Meng.
“Grandmother, Sister Meng, you can go back to Changbin first. Nianning and I will return the day after tomorrow.”
“Alright, you’ll be back the day after tomorrow. Don’t you love your wife? Try to control your temper; she won’t be able to endure it if you lose your temper too often.”
Grandmother Huo, having heard that Ruan Nianning had left after an argument, assumed Huo Jianan’s “madness” had driven away her granddaughter-in-law. She couldn’t help but offer more advice, her words full of concern yet unable to reveal the truth.
Huo Jianan’s mental health issues were a secret kept by Grandmother Huo and Meng Xien, fearing she would feel even more ostracized and give up on herself.
“I understand, Grandmother. I love Nianning so much, I wouldn’t dare lose my temper at her.”
Grandmother Huo paused, then sighed. “Truly, the power of love.”
Meng Xien smiled. “Aunt Xu, look at how close they are. We might be welcoming a great-granddaughter soon.”
Grandmother Huo chuckled. “Nannan and Nianning are both so beautiful. Our future great-granddaughter will undoubtedly be as lovely as a little princess.”
Huo Jianan’s face flushed. “Grandmother, the matter of having a child will have to wait until Nianning finishes filming this movie.” Suddenly, she remembered that she was still inexperienced and that her knowledge of the marking technique was purely theoretical. This thought made her blush even more deeply.
“Alright, do as you wish,” Grandmother Huo said. “Young people’s matters are your own.” But almost immediately after saying this, she turned to Meng Xien and asked, “Xien, when will you bring your girlfriend home for us to see? If you truly love her, set a date and marry her soon. Aunt Xu will arrange a splendid wedding for you, just as she did for Nannan.”
Meng Xien’s lips curved into a smile, her eyes softening. “I understand, Aunt Xu.”
Huo Jianan watched them walk away, listening to their voices fade into the distance: “Why not bring her home this weekend? We can all spend the weekend together—more lively that way.”
“Alright, Aunt Xu. I’ll ask her.”
Huo Jianan gazed at their retreating figures, the older woman and the younger, Meng Xien supporting Xu Weiyi. Although Meng Xien called Grandmother Huo “Grandmother” and Aunt Xu “Aunt,” she had essentially become another granddaughter to them.
Having been here for some time now, Huo Jianan could feel their genuine affection and warmth towards her.
Tears welled up in her eyes.
“I’m sorry, Grandmother, Sister Meng, I’m no longer the Huo Jianan I once was, but I will love you both dearly, with all my heart.”
Huo Jianan turned her wheelchair around and saw Ruan Nianning standing behind her.
“Nianning, what brings you here?”
“I came to see Grandmother and Sister Meng off.” Ruan Nianning gazed affectionately at the woman in the wheelchair, then pushed it back to the hospital room.
“You’re the patient, and you’re pushing me?” Huo Jianan said.
“You can’t move easily, so of course I’ll push you.”
“Come here, stand in front of me.”
“Why?” Ruan Nianning asked, but she moved closer as instructed. Suddenly, Huo Jianan yanked her forward. Caught off guard, Ruan Nianning fell into Huo Jianan’s lap.
Huo Jianan chuckled, “Hold on tight, Wife.” With that, she propelled the wheelchair forward at a brisk pace.
The smooth concrete floor allowed the wheelchair to glide steadily.
Ruan Nianning wrapped her arms around Huo Jianan’s neck, laughing and calling out, “Slow down! Don’t make us fall!”
“I’m a top-tier wheelchair racer,” Huo Jianan said, kissing Ruan Nianning’s soft, fair cheek. “Just hold on tight and we won’t fall.”
Ruan Nianning giggled, her silver-bell laughter carried on the wind, scattering along the path.
Instead of returning to the hospital room, the two women walked along the path toward the garden.
The nurses following behind blinked in surprise. One of them whispered to Xiaoman, “This isn’t what I expected.”
“What do you mean?”
“Didn’t you say that ordinary girls who marry into wealthy families are always bullied and looked down upon?” The nurse didn’t dare voice her unspoken thought: Your Young Miss is disabled—maybe she’s bitter and twisted inside.
“Nonsense,” Xiaoman replied proudly. “Our Madam is strong and enlightened. The Young Miss treats the Young Madam with great kindness.”
“Do the Young Miss and the Young Madam usually play like this?”
Xiaoman’s face glowed with pride. “Yes, our Young Miss adores the Young Madam.”
The nurse thought to herself, Miss Huo may be disabled, but her family is rich—truly staggeringly rich, one of the top-tier aristocratic families.
Ordinary wealth might breed eccentricity, but extreme wealth might prevent it.
“Your Young Madam is Ruan Nianning, a top-tier beauty. Who wouldn’t adore her?”
“Mm! The Young Madam is indeed very beautiful!”
The nurses thought, Ruan Nianning is so lucky! She’s stunningly beautiful, a major celebrity, and married to such a catch! I’m dying of envy!
“Minmin, I’ve arrived in Changbin,” Meng Xien said, calling Min Jiru immediately after getting off the plane. “I’ll be away for the next couple of days. Did you miss me? Were you able to sleep?”
On the other end of the line, Min Jiru’s playful voice came through, lowered to a whisper. “No, I slept perfectly fine.”
“Is that so? Then I won’t come to see you tonight.”
“No way!” Min Jiru cooed cutely into the phone, her voice soft and sweet. “You have to come tonight! You’re already back in Changbin—how could you not visit me?”
“But someone said they didn’t miss me,” Meng Xien countered. “Unless that someone tells me they love me and miss me, I’m not coming.”
Min Jiru glanced at the people passing by the break room. Her delicate, doll-like face flushed crimson, and she lowered her voice even more. “I missed you.”
“And?”
“I love you.” The girl’s voice was honey-sweet, carrying a blush-inducing softness that made hearts race.
Meng Xien’s heart pounded against his chest like drumbeats. “I love you too, Minmin.”
After hanging up the phone, Meng Xien smiled gently, thinking about how she might be able to bring Minmin home this weekend to meet Aunt Xu, Jianan, Nianning, and the others. They would be both delighted and surprised, especially Jianan.
Just as she was lost in these pleasant thoughts, someone suddenly collided with her. Quick as lightning, Meng Xien sidestepped to avoid the impact, simultaneously grabbing the person’s shoulders to steady them, preventing both herself from being knocked over and the other person from falling and getting hurt.
“Thank you,” the woman said, then gasped in surprise and delight as she looked up. “It’s you! It really is you! Miss Meng, do you remember me?”
Meng Xien, bewildered by the woman’s sudden enthusiasm, instinctively took a step back to put some distance between them.
“Sorry, but who are you?”
“At True Colors Bar, when Young Master Zhuo was forcing drinks on Min Jiru and me, you came to our rescue. Have you forgotten?”
Meng Xien finally remembered. “Oh, it’s you! You’re Lulu, right?”
The woman’s eyes lit up, clearly thrilled. “That’s me! I’m Lulu, Qian Lu! You actually remember me! You were the one who took me home that day. Thank you so much!”
As she spoke, her almond-shaped eyes, framed by thick eyelashes, flickered seductively, their gaze fixed on Meng Xien like a pair of fishing hooks.
“You’re such a refined and ladylike Alpha, so different from all the others I’ve met before.”
Meng Xien cleared her throat, averting the woman’s flirtatious gaze. “There’s no need to thank me. Helping a friend of Jiru’s is just a small gesture. Miss Qian, please don’t worry about it.”
“That won’t do! I must treat you to a proper meal to express my gratitude. When are you free?” Qian Lu’s spirits soared. “Why wait? Let’s make it tonight! Don’t you see how fated we are? I just flew back from out of town and ran into you right away. This is my first time using the VIP lounge, and I never expected to meet you here, Miss Meng.”
As she uttered the last three words, Qian Lu’s voice softened into a coo, her gaze on Meng Xien growing even more fervent and daring.
That night, Meng Xien had been thoroughly drunk. Even in her drunken haze, she overheard Young Master Zhuo and others mentioning “Huo Corporation” and “Miss Meng.” Later, when someone helped her up, she caught the scent of White Magnolia fragrance clinging to her.
When the man finally laid her on the bed, Qian Lu, fighting to keep her eyelids from gluing together, finally saw the owner of that White Magnolia fragrance—such a stunningly beautiful face!
She had never seen such a perfect Alpha before!
Beauty? She had it. Poise? She had that too. And most importantly, she was Miss Meng, the young lady whom even Young Master Zhuo dared not offend.
Huo Corporation! That was the Huo Corporation! Changbin’s most prestigious and influential family! If she could join such a top-tier clan, Qian Lu would truly become a winner in life. What else would she have to worry about?
Still drunk, she grabbed Miss Meng’s wrist, but Miss Meng coldly pushed her away.
She thought they’d never cross paths again, but today, as if heaven had dropped a pie in her lap, she’d actually run into Meng Xien here!
Meng Xien frowned, displeased by the woman’s forwardness.
“My apologies, Miss Qian, but I have plans tonight. I appreciate your kind offer, but it was just a minor matter. You really don’t need to worry about it.”
Qian Lu persisted. “If not tonight, then another time?” She pulled out her phone. “May I add you on WeChat?”
Meng Xien remained expressionless, declining politely but firmly. “I’m sorry, I have urgent matters to attend to and am in a hurry. Miss Qian, it was a pleasure meeting you. Goodbye.”
That evening, at Hefeng Court, unit 901 of building 10, Min Jiru returned home with arms full of fresh fruit and snacks. Two bottles of red wine, left by Meng Xien during her last visit, stood in the refrigerator.
Although Meng Xien had told her she would join Aunt Xu for dinner before coming over, Min Jiru was still meticulously baking small cakes. Xien had praised her pastries before, describing them as light, fluffy, and not overly sweet.
As the cakes baked in the oven, Min Jiru stood nearby, imagining feeding one to Meng Xien later that night and stealing a kiss from her soft, fragrant lips while she was distracted by the treat. A lovely blush crept across her face, and she lowered her head bashfully, her lips curving into a cute smile.
Ding-dong! Someone was at the door.
Without hesitation, Min Jiru rushed to answer.
Standing outside was a woman in towering stilettos, her face painted with bold makeup. Beneath her bright red coat, she wore a seductive black miniskirt.
Min Jiru was surprised. “Lulu?”
“What’s wrong? You look disappointed. Were you waiting for your fiancé?”
Min Jiru’s face paled at the mention of her fiancé. “No, of course not.”
Qian Lu, oblivious to the change in Min Jiru’s expression, walked into the room. “Just kidding. He doesn’t even know you live here. Hey, what’s that delicious smell? Are you baking another cake? You don’t have to go through all that trouble. You can just buy one if you want cake.”
Min Jiru remained silent as she followed Qian Lu to the sofa. “What brought you here today?”
“I was having dinner with a friend nearby. We were supposed to go to a bar afterward, but he had to leave for a family emergency. I remembered you lived around here, so I decided to drop by.”
Qian Lu spotted some snacks on the table and casually grabbed a bag, tearing it open and munching on the contents. “Is there any beer?”
Min Jiru shook her head. “Just mineral water, sparkling water, and juice. What would you like?”
“Sparkling water, then. No, never mind. Let’s not bother.” Qian Lu slumped back against the sofa. “You’re all grown up and living alone. Isn’t it boring not to drink?”
Min Jiru chuckled softly, her gaze lingering for a moment before she replied after a pause, “I don’t like drinking.”
“Fine,” Qian Lu said, glancing at Min Jiru. Then she suddenly asked, “What’s your relationship with Meng Xien, the one who picked us up from True Colors Bar that day? She claimed you’re her girlfriend. Is that true?”
