- Chapter 50.1 - Then Let Me Hold You
Xiyan Village buzzed with activity as several cars arrived in quick succession, bearing license plates from Yuqing City and the neighboring city.
Later that afternoon, another vehicle pulled up. Out stepped a tall, striking beauty with cool, refined features, dressed in a high-quality custom suit that accentuated her poised elegance and sophisticated aura.
Huo Jianan was startled to see Meng Xien at the old house. “Sister Meng, what brings you here? Didn’t I use Xiaoman’s phone to reassure you everything was fine?”
“You activated emergency mode. Of course I had to come check on you.”
Meng Xien’s gaze fell upon Huo Jianan in the living room, now transformed into the “village beauty” in a brightly patterned red and green padded jacket. The striking visual impact caused a fleeting crack in her usually calm and composed demeanor.
“What exactly happened?”
The “village beauty” Huo Jianan smoothly delivered her rehearsed explanation: “Well, this morning Nianning and I went for a walk to get some fresh air, strolling along the stone path by the river. We were having fun, and then we accidentally slipped and fell into the water. I panicked when I fell, and my phone dropped in the river too, so I pressed that red button.”
Meng Xien frowned upon hearing this. Yesterday, they had urgently called a doctor to treat Ruan Nianning’s fever. Even after her fever subsided, wasn’t the patient supposed to rest properly? And weren’t the family members supposed to ensure she stayed put? On a bitterly cold winter morning, a sick patient and a disabled person running out to breathe fresh air? Was Huo Jianan treating her like a three-year-old?
Meng Xien’s frown deepened. “What about Xiaoman? When you fell into the water, was she not with you?”
Xiaoman, standing beside Huo Jianan, lowered her head in fear at Miss Meng’s sharp tone, hardly daring to breathe.
“I told Xiaoman not to follow me. She always sticks so closely to me; I find it annoying. But when we fell into the water, she rushed over to save us immediately—she was incredibly brave.”
The corner of Meng Xien’s mouth twitched. “And Nianning? How is she doing?”
She had initially wanted to ask, How did you end up chasing after your wife all the way here? But then she remembered that Huo Jianan had followed her quarrelsome wife here after an argument.
Last time she’d asked a few questions over the phone, Huo Jianan had nearly gone mad. Pressing the matter further might make Jianan lose her temper and truly lose her mind. That would be a real emergency!
“She’s fine, just suffering from exposure. We borrowed a neighbor’s bathroom for a hot shower, and now she’s resting in bed.”
Meng Xien frowned for the third time. “You didn’t go to the hospital?”
“It’s not a fever, and the doctor prescribed medicine yesterday,” Huo Jianan replied, omitting that Ruan Nianning had refused to go to the hospital. She just wanted to get some rest.
“That’s not good enough! Go to the hospital right now! Both of you! Aunt Xu is on her way to Yuqing by plane and will arrive soon. You need to get checked out immediately!”
Huo Jianan’s eyes widened. “Grandmother is coming too?”
“Of course! Do you think this is a joke? This is an emergency!”
Huo Jianan: “……”
An hour later, Huo Jianan and Ruan Nianning lay in the best hospital in Yuqing City, having undergone all necessary examinations.
Ruan Nianning, repeatedly exposed to the cold and exhausted, had a weakened immune system and a mild lung infection. The doctor prescribed two injections, improved nutrition, and bed rest for a gradual recovery. As for Huo Jianan, her injuries were limited to cuts and bruises on her arm and hand. With proper wound care and two days of rest, she would be fine.
Meng Xien said, “I only told Aunt Xu that you slipped and fell into the river. Don’t mention anything else until she arrives. Be careful.”
Huo Jianan smiled. “Thank you, Sister Meng. I won’t slip up.”
“You! It’s a good thing you’re unharmed. If something had truly happened, Aunt Xu, with her age and heart condition, wouldn’t have been able to bear it.”
Huo Jianan, full of remorse, said, “I understand. I’m sorry, Sister Meng. I’ll be more careful next time.”
Meng Xien glanced at her and slowly sat down beside her. A distant look in her eyes, she murmured, “You haven’t wronged me. It’s I who should apologize to you and Aunt Xu.”
Huo Jianan was puzzled. “Sister Meng, why are you saying that? What do you mean by ‘apologize’? You weren’t even there! If you had been, you would have jumped in to save us!”
Huo Jianan remembered the time she’d been attacked outside a bar. Sister Meng had rushed to her defense, grabbing the man and shoving him away to stop him from harming her.
Meng Xien paused, her gaze gradually returning to the present. She smiled faintly. “Yes, if I had been there, I would have jumped in immediately to save you and Nianning.” She patted Huo Jianan’s shoulder. “What I meant was that I failed to look after you properly.”
Huo Jianan laughed. “You can’t watch over me 24/7. I’m not a child anymore—I’m married and even a Vice President!”
“Do you even remember you’re the Vice President? Don’t be so reckless in the future. Remember, you’re Aunt Xu’s only granddaughter and the Huo family’s heiress. You must always prioritize your safety, understand?”
“I know, Sister Meng,” Huo Jianan replied, unable to suppress a few inward grumbles. “You’re only a few years older than me. Why are you acting like my mother?”
Meng Xien smacked her head in frustration. “What’s that supposed to mean? Comparing me to your mother? Are you calling me old?”
“Sorry, sorry! Not mother—sister! My own sister! Ow, spare me! That hurts!”
“Alright, rest now. Aunt Xu will be here soon.”
Huo Jianan asked again, “Sister Meng, can’t we let Nianning stay in the same ward as me?”
Meng Xien sighed helplessly. Ruan Nianning’s room was just four or five wards away on the same floor, but Jianan looked as if she were separated from her by the Milky Way.
“This isn’t Changbin. Yuqing Hospital’s facilities are limited. Nianning is an Omega, so she can’t be in the same ward as an Alpha. If you want to see her, I’ll take you to visit her later.”
Before long, Grandmother Huo arrived. The white-haired elder hurried down the corridor, her steps quickening as she rushed toward Huo Jianan’s hospital room. “Nannan! Where’s Nannan? Nannan…”
Huo Jianan heard Housekeeper He’s voice in the hallway. “Madam, please slow down. Take it easy.”
The door opened. As Huo Jianan lifted her head from the bed, she was immediately enveloped in a tight embrace. “Nannan, Nannan! How are you feeling? Let Grandma see you.”
Grandmother Huo held her granddaughter so tightly that Huo Jianan struggled to breathe. She wriggled upright. “I’m fine, just caught a cold. The doctor said I’ll be fine with a couple of days’ rest.”
Xu Weiyi cradled her granddaughter’s face, her heart aching as she examined her thoroughly. “Are you hurt anywhere?”
“Just a few scrapes on my hand. The doctor already bandaged them. Don’t worry, Grandmother.”
Meng Xien stepped forward to support Xu Weiyi. “Aunt Xu, Jianan is alright. The doctor gave her a full examination—no concussion, no fractures, no infection. He just left and said rest is all she needs.”
Xu Weiyi nodded, a weight lifting from her heart as she finally relaxed.
“Young Miss,” Housekeeper He said, “you really frightened Madam this time. We’re so relieved you’re safe and sound.”
Huo Jianan apologized, “I’m so sorry, Grandmother. I must have frightened you terribly.”
Xu Weiyi lifted Jianan’s injured hand, examining it carefully.
On the way to the hospital, she had received a call from Meng Xien, who explained the general circumstances of Jianan’s fall into the river. Her granddaughter, unable to move her legs, had fallen into the icy winter water. With her leg condition, she couldn’t swim to the surface. For someone so afraid of pain to end up covered in cuts and bruises… one could only imagine how terrified and panicked Jianan must have been.
Xu Weiyi’s eyes reddened with heartache. “Does it hurt?”
“It doesn’t hurt at all, just some scrapes. Don’t worry, Grandmother. It’s really just a minor scratch. I’m fine.”
Xiaoman noticed Grandmother Huo glance her way and shrank back, too afraid to move.
Huo Jianan expected her grandmother to ask about the incident leading up to her fall into the river. Instead, Grandmother simply asked, “How is Nianning? Is she alright?”
“Nianning caught a cold and has a slight lung infection. The doctor says it’s nothing serious and a couple of injections should clear it up.”
Grandmother Huo turned to Meng Xien and asked, “Is someone taking care of Nianning?”
Meng Xien replied, “There’s a dedicated nurse attending to her.”
Grandmother Huo nodded. “Xien, let’s go check on Nianning together.”
Huo Jianan, hearing this, lifted her blanket and tried to get out of bed, wanting to go with them.
Grandmother Huo frowned. “What are you rushing over for? Your wife isn’t going anywhere. Stay put and rest properly. Xiaoman, stay here and watch over the Young Miss. Make up for your earlier mistake by ensuring she doesn’t leave the hospital room again.”
Xiaoman puffed out his chest and promised, “Yes, Madam.”
Not long after, Grandmother and Sister Meng returned. Learning that Ruan Nianning’s fever had subsided and she was sleeping soundly, Huo Jianan finally felt relieved.
“Grandmother, you must be tired from rushing over by plane,” she said. “See, I’m fine now. Please go back to the hotel and rest. We’ll return to Changbin tomorrow, okay?”
Xu Weiyi glanced at her granddaughter. “You’re kicking your grandmother out as soon as she arrives?”
“No, no! I just think rushing from the plane to the car was too tiring. Grandmother, please go back to the hotel. Tonight, Nianning, Sister Meng, and I will come to the hotel for dinner with you. How about that?”
Housekeeper He listened nearby, both surprised and delighted. She was surprised by the Young Miss’s sudden maturity and remarkably improved temper, finding it hard to believe this was the same person who used to lose her temper over careless words or trivial matters. She was delighted that the Young Miss had finally learned to empathize with others, accept their kindness, and show concern for her Grandmother.
“That’s right, Madam,” Housekeeper He said. “You haven’t rested properly since early this morning. The doctor said you shouldn’t overexert yourself—it’s bad for your heart.”
Meng Xien added, “Aunt Xu, please go back to the hotel and rest. I’ll stay here with Jianan.”
Xu Weiyi nodded. “Alright, but don’t come back to the hotel for dinner. You’re both patients—no need to exhaust yourselves with back-and-forth trips. I’ll have the hotel prepare some dishes and send them over tonight. I’ll visit you again tomorrow morning.”
Huo Jianan’s lips curved into a smile, her eyes crinkled with delight. “Great! We get to have delicious food! Thank you, Grandmother!”
Xu Weiyi smiled affectionately and left with Housekeeper He to return to the hotel.
Huo Jianan lay in bed for a while, then suddenly sat up. Ruan Nianning’s emotions had finally stabilized, but Huo Jianan worried that if she had a nightmare and woke up without Jianan by her side, she might fall back into self-blame and torment herself.
“Sister Meng, I need to see Nianning. I can’t rest peacefully knowing she’s not by my side.”
Meng Xien rested her forehead in her hand, resigned. She had no choice but to take Huo Jianan to Ruan Nianning’s hospital room.
In the hospital corridor, the afternoon sun at four o’clock had lost much of its intensity. Though it would soon disappear below the horizon, it still bathed everything in its warm glow.
Ruan Nianning lay on the hospital bed, her face finally showing a hint of color, no longer the pale, pained, and exhausted visage of the previous day. Seeing her in such a deep sleep, Huo Jianan decided not to disturb her and settled in to keep watch by her side.
“I’ll be back later,” Meng Xien said. “Call me if anything comes up.”
“Mm-hmm, Sister Meng. You should get some rest too. We can have dinner together tonight.”
“Sounds good. I’ll also snag some of Aunt Xu’s nutritious meals she prepared for you and Nianning.” Meng Xien smiled, then sent the nurses out of the room.
Silence returned to the room, leaving only Huo Jianan and Nianning.
Huo Jianan gazed at Nianning’s delicate, peaceful face. She recalled that morning in the icy river, when Nianning had held her, kissed her, and whispered like a little lamb, “Jianan, did you know? I love you.”
Huo Jianan’s heart ached with tenderness, yet it also felt as if it had fallen into a soft cotton candy cloud—light and sweet. She gently cradled Ruan Nianning’s hand, which had been resting beside her, and held it in her own. “Nianning,” she murmured, “did you know? I love you. I’ve loved you for a long time, deeply and completely.”
When had she fallen in love with Wolfie?
Huo Jianan pondered this for a long time, but she couldn’t pinpoint the exact moment. The affection had crept up on her gradually, until she found herself thinking of Ruan Nianning at unexpected times: while soaking in the bathtub, as she clumsily turned in bed before sleep, when admiring the vibrant flowers in the greenhouse, or even when she turned back after speaking with Sister Meng or Wang Baobao, only to see Ruan Nianning’s shadow flit across her mind.
She would recall Ruan Nianning’s carefree laughter, her furrowed brow as she pondered anxiously, or her alluring attempts to tease and charm her…
Huo Jianan’s lips curved into a smile as she gazed at the sleeping figure on the bed, feeling utterly content in that moment.
Suddenly, the soft vibration of a cell phone shattered the warm tranquility of the hospital room.
Huo Jianan glanced down. It wasn’t her phone, but the one resting on the bedside table—Ruan Nianning’s phone.
Caller ID: Sister Song.
Huo Jianan feared that the phone’s ring would disturb Ruan Nianning’s peaceful sleep. Before the ringtone grew louder and more insistent, she quickly swiped open her phone.
A cool, urgent female voice pierced her eardrums: “Hello, Nianning! You finally answered! I was so worried…”
Huo Jianan lowered her voice and interrupted, “I’m sorry, Sister Song, it’s Huo Jianan.”
The caller paused, then sighed in relief. “President Huo? You found Nianning?”
“Yes, I found Nianning. She’s with me now.” Huo Jianan was deeply grateful to Song Shiyu for promptly recalling Nianning’s grandmother’s address, which had allowed her to find Nianning in time. Otherwise, Nianning might have remained unconscious on the second floor of her ancestral home, running a high fever, and could have faced grave danger if not discovered and rushed to the hospital.
Huo Jianan expressed her gratitude: “Sister Song, thank you for your help. Unfortunately, Nianning isn’t feeling well and won’t be able to return to the set for a few days.”
Song Shiyu replied, “I’m just glad we found her. How is she doing?”
“She caught a cold. The doctor said two injections should cure her. I’m sorry for the inconvenience this has caused the production team. I’ll call Director Zhang and the producer tomorrow. And thank you again, Sister Song.”
Song Shiyu didn’t press further. Now that Huo Jianan had found Ruan Nianning, she had nothing left to worry about. With President Huo here, Nianning would undoubtedly receive the best care.
“Don’t mention it, President Huo. I won’t disturb Nianning and your rest any longer.”
“Thank you, Sister Song,” Huo Jianan said sincerely once more.
After hanging up the phone, Huo Jianan turned around and met a pair of dark, weary eyes. Though still showing signs of fatigue, those deep brown pupils now held a clear spark of life.
“You’re awake. Feeling any better?”
Ruan Nianning nodded. “Much better.” Her voice was still hoarse.
“Rest a few days and you’ll be back to your usual self—healthy and vibrant Nianning.” Huo Jianan smiled gently, raising an eyebrow. “Would you like some water?” she asked tenderly.
Ruan Nianning nodded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
Ever since her mother left to work abroad when she was eleven, Ruan Nianning had lived at school from middle school onward. Even after her mother’s death, she remained alone—studying, taking university entrance exams, acting to earn a living. Though her grandmother loved her dearly, she lived far away and had poor eyesight, making it impossible for her to be by Nianning’s side constantly.
