Transmigrated as the Chongxi Wife of a Critically Ill Young Lady - Chapter 66
Chapter 66
Shanqing’s body was stiff. Jiwanching held on to it and kept talking to it. Cen Xia’s persuasion was useless. She insisted that the little one was just sleeping.
She took out various lipsticks, applied them to its cheeks, and then giggled. “Sister didn’t bully Shanqing. Xiaxia said we should make the baby look beautiful. After we put on blush, we’ll take a picture…”
Cen Xia bent down, wrapped her arm around her, and pressed her forehead against hers. She said softly, “Sister, Shanqing has left us. How about we send it to where it belongs?”
Jiwanching shook her head. “No!”
Cen Xia kissed her lips and touched her with her nose. “Sister, be a good girl!”
Jiwanching felt the warmth of her lips. She was stunned for a moment, and tears fell on Shanqing’s fur.
Cen Xia tried to take the cat from her hands.
Jiwanching bit her lip. As its body was slowly being taken away, she suddenly tightened her grip and cried out, “No, Xiaxia. Don’t send Shanqing away. It’s ours. It’s ours…”
Cen Xia had to stop. She tried to reason with her. “Sister, didn’t we agree that Shanqing would keep Auntie company and Xiaxia would keep you company?”
Jiwanching became even sadder. She cried and said, “Mom is alone in the water. She’s so cold. She fell in to save me.”
“Shanqing, too. I watched it get kicked to death. They all did it for me, Xiaxia.”
Cen Xia hugged her again, comforting her, “So, they didn’t hesitate to give up their lives to protect you, Sister. They want you to live well. If you’re like this, Auntie and Shanqing will be sad.”
Jiwanching sniffled hard, trying to hold back her tears. Her body still trembled uncontrollably.
Cen Xia hugged her for a while. When she had calmed down a bit, she let go and tried to take the cat from her hands.
This time, Jiwanching was not as stubborn. She let go, her eyes still fixed on Shanqing’s body.
Cen Xia quickly took the little one, handed it to Yan Shuang, and the two nodded at each other.
Yan Shuang walked towards the door with the cat. Jiwanching rolled the wheelchair behind him, shouting, “Shanqing, my Shanqing…”
Cen Xia knelt in front of her, burying her head in Jiwanching’s lap and rubbing against her. “Sister, let Dr. Yan take Shanqing back first. How about we send it to Auntie tomorrow together?”
Jiwanching’s chest felt heavy with pain. She couldn’t breathe properly. She lowered her head and saw Cen Xia lying on her lap. Tears once again slid from her eyes.
She called out “Xiaxia” in a very small voice.
Cen Xia looked up and saw that her face was pale. She didn’t think twice and directly lifted her from the wheelchair.
Jiwanching shrank into her arms, smelling the familiar scent of gardenias. Her consciousness slowly faded.
She slept restlessly. In her dream, she called out “Shanqing” several times and sobbed. Cen Xia stayed by her side, holding her and kissing her to comfort her.
In the middle of the night, Zhang Yi called and said that Ji Yanqing had been diagnosed with a mental illness. Since she committed the crime during a psychotic episode, she would not be held criminally responsible.
Cen Xia was furious. She questioned him over and over again, “Why? Why can’t she be held criminally responsible? My Wanqing is still in a coma. She’s been looking for her cat. She’s in so much pain that she can’t even breathe. This can’t just be over. I must get justice for her!”
Zhang Yi said, “Miss Cen, please calm down. Ji Yanqing is also seriously injured. If they decide to sue…”
He stopped talking. Cen Xia knew what he meant. She said fiercely, “Then let them sue! I’d rather spend my whole life in prison than let those people get away with it!”
Zhang Yi raised his voice and called her by her full name, “Cen Xia, calm down! If you go to prison, what will happen to Jiwanching?”
When Cen Xia heard the name “Jiwanching,” she finally gave in. She lowered her eyes, looked at her face, and made a firm decision. “No. Ji Yanqing is a menace as long as she’s outside. I’ll do whatever it takes to sue her until she’s in jail!”
She wanted to ensure Jiwanching’s safety in case she was no longer there one day.
Zhang Yi sighed and said, “Okay then. You can arrange your personal affairs.”
Cen Xia said “okay,” and they hung up.
Jiwanching woke up from her dream. She saw Cen Xia’s familiar face. She opened her lips with difficulty. “Xiaxia, don’t leave me.”
A tear rolled down her face.
Cen Xia lowered her head and kissed her eyes. “Xiaxia won’t leave you, Sister. Xiaxia also wants to send Shanqing to Auntie’s place with you. Be a good girl, Sister. Sleep for a bit longer, or you won’t have the strength to travel tomorrow.”
When Jiwanching heard this, she blinked a few times. She seemed to have remembered something and struggled to sit up.
Cen Xia used her arm to lift her up higher. “You’re not sleeping anymore, Sister?”
Jiwanching had a little more stability with Cen Xia holding her. She looked at the wheelchair on the floor.
Cen Xia understood. “Do you want to get on it, Sister?”
Jiwanching nodded.
She placed her in the wheelchair.
Jiwanching rolled the wheelchair towards the walk-in closet. Cen Xia followed behind without asking where she was going until she opened the cabinet door and her eyes fell on the top shelf.
That shelf was full of brand-new silk quilts.
She pointed to the light blue one on top and said, “Xiaxia, that one is the warmest.”
Cen Xia took down the quilt.
Jiwanching reached out to hug it, burying her face in the quilt and smelling its scent.
Before her mother passed away, she loved light blue. This silk quilt was left by her. Jiwanching had never been able to bring herself to use it. Tomorrow, she was going to send Shanqing to her mom, and she wanted to bring this quilt with her.
…
The next morning, the two of them took Shanqing’s ashes to the bridge where Ji Jinlan had her accident. They scattered the ashes along with the silk quilt that had been burned into ashes into the river.
Jiwanching kept talking to the river, pulling Cen Xia and introducing her over and over again.
Cen Xia was silent, praying in her heart, “Auntie, please, in heaven, protect Wanqing and keep her safe and free from pain for the rest of her life.”
The autumn breeze blew, bringing a refreshing coolness. Jiwanching’s frail body stood stubbornly in the wheelchair, tirelessly talking about the hardships and joys they had experienced together.
“Mom, Xiaxia said you were lonely, so we brought Shanqing here. It’s very well-behaved and sensible. When you touch its chin, it will lie down and show you its white belly.”
“Xiaxia said that cats are just like people. They will show their vulnerability to those they trust.”
“Mom, Xiaxia always bullies Shanqing, but Wanqing always protects it. Now, Wanqing is giving it to you, Mom…”
The morning light reflected on the river, glistening. Together with the scenery around the bridge, it created a unique painting. Jiwanching vaguely saw the reflection of Ji Jinlan floating on the water. She was holding a cat and smiling at her.
“Wanqing, my child, go back. Don’t catch a cold!”
A light flashed in Jiwanching’s eyes. She reached out and grabbed Cen Xia’s arm, eager to introduce her to Ji Jinlan. “Mom, this is Xiaxia!”
Ji Jinlan stroked the cat’s head, her eyes full of tenderness. “I know, Wanqing. You’ve told me so many times!”
Jiwanching seemed very stubborn. She emphasized again, “Mom, Xiaxia is Wanqing’s wife. She’s the one who’s been protecting Wanqing all this time.”
Ji Jinlan smiled and asked, “Wanqing, you really like Xiaxia, don’t you?”
Jiwanching nodded heavily.
Ji Jinlan reached out from a distance, tracing her outline. She helped her tuck her wind-tousled hair behind her ear and said, “Then when you go back, you must be happy with Xiaxia, okay?”
Jiwanching nodded. “Okay, Mom. I’ll be happy with Xiaxia.”
Ji Jinlan was full of relief. “My Wanqing has grown up again. She’s even more sensible than the last time I saw her.”
Jiwanching cried, choking, “But Wanqing misses Mom…”
Ji Jinlan’s face slightly sank. She pretended to be angry and said, “I just praised you a little, and Wanqing is already being naughty!”
Jiwanching stopped crying. “Wanqing isn’t being naughty. I even helped you get your company back, Mom. I do physical therapy every day. I want to stand up soon. I’m not being naughty. I’m working very hard…”
Ji Jinlan nodded with tears in her eyes. “Then the next time we meet, I hope Wanqing can bring Xiaxia and walk over here together, okay?”
Jiwanching agreed.
Ji Jinlan reached out again, caressing her face from a distance. “Hurry and take Xiaxia back. I’ll help you take care of the little cat!”
Jiwanching wanted to look at her one more time, but her figure had disappeared in the middle of the river. The calm river surface was wrinkled by the wind, as if it were the ripples created when Ji Jinlan had just sunk. She stared for a long time.
It was not until Cen Xia reached out and hugged her. “Sister, we’ve been out for a long time. Let’s go back now. We can come back and see Auntie next time, okay?”
Jiwanching finally reluctantly turned back. On the way, they went to the company to ask Tang Shaoyun about the progress of the case.
Tang Shaoyun didn’t know that Zhang Yi had called Cen Xia, but Ji Yanqing had already woken up and was receiving treatment at a psychiatric hospital. Her consciousness was gradually returning to normal. When she was sober, she felt very guilty about everything she had done. When Tang Shaoyun suggested a private settlement, she didn’t refuse.
So far, everything was under control.
Jiwanching was finally a little relieved. The two of them got into the car to go home. Her body couldn’t hold on, and she fainted. Cen Xia seized the opportunity to file a lawsuit.
When they got home, Jiwanching was too tired and fell into a deep sleep. Cen Xia found Yan Shuang and asked him to watch Jiwanching while she went out to do something.
Perhaps they had become familiar with each other after so long. Yan Shuang immediately guessed what she wanted to do. He said coldly, “Have you thought it through?”
Cen Xia paused for a second, then said, “I have. One day, when I’m gone, I don’t want any hidden dangers left in her life.”
Yan Shuang nodded and said nothing.
Cen Xia said “thank you” and then left.
When Jiwanching woke up, she didn’t see Cen Xia right away. She looked around and saw Yan Shuang sitting on the sofa with his laptop.
A sense of fear arose in her. She sat up abruptly, and the injury on her neck caused her severe pain.
Yan Shuang put down his laptop and walked over. He asked calmly, “Miss, you’re awake. How do you feel?”
Jiwanching opened her mouth. Her hoarse throat trembled and cracked a little from her nervousness. “Where’s Cen Xia? Where did she go?”
Yan Shuang answered in a calm tone, “Your wife went out to do something and told me to take good care of you!”
Jiwanching asked, “What is it? Where did she go? Why did she ask you to take care of me? What did she go to do herself?”
Yan Shuang shook his head. “I don’t know.”
Jiwanching’s heart was hanging in the air. Her eyes were fixed on Yan Shuang. “She left, didn’t she?”
Yan Shuang said, “No.”
Jiwanching didn’t believe him. She asked again, “Then where did she go? Tell me where she went?”
Yan Shuang didn’t say anything. Just then, Tang Shaoyun called.
Jiwanching rushed over to get the phone. Because her body was unstable, she almost fell off the bed.
Yan Shuang was quick and caught her.
Jiwanching’s fingers trembled as she answered the phone.
Tang Shaoyun said, “Miss, this is bad. Your wife filed a lawsuit. She turned herself in. I was one step too late and couldn’t stop her.”
Yan Shuang heard the voice on the phone and frowned slightly, revealing a look of disdain towards Tang Shaoyun’s incompetence.
He then looked at Jiwanching, ready to take action when she got too emotional and fainted. But he found that she didn’t seem as hopeless and helpless as before. Her face was just terribly cold.
When she spoke again, it was with a long-unseen domineering tone. “You drive here to pick me up, now!”
