- Chapter 26 - Dependency
“…I’ve been enduring you because I see you’re Su Jiyu’s mother,” Zhao Zhiyi said coldly as he grabbed He Linrong’s wrist. “But it seems you, Auntie, don’t have the slightest resemblance to an elder.”
He pushed He Linrong away forcefully. Infuriated, she roared, “What am I paying you people for?! Pin him to the ground!”
The two bodyguards immediately lunged forward. Zhao Zhiyi tucked his arm and delivered an elbow strike to the stomach of the guard on the right. As the man recoiled in pain, Zhao Zhiyi seized the opening to turn and land a punch squarely on the left guard’s eye. He knew he could handle small time thugs, but he stood no chance against professionally trained bodyguards in a sustained fight, his success just now was purely due to the element of surprise. The guards hadn’t expected such ferocity from an Omega.
Taking his chance, Zhao Zhiyi bolted toward the house, but he was a step too slow. One guard grabbed his shoulder and yanked him back, slamming him onto the floor. Zhao Zhiyi hissed in pain as his arms were wrenched behind his back like a common criminal.
He Linrong sneered, “So you have some moves. I originally intended to just teach you some manners, but it seems you truly lack any sense of respect.”
She glanced at one of the guards. Understanding the signal, he began releasing Alpha pheromones. The air was instantly saturated with the heavy, metallic scent of rust. Zhao Zhiyi gagged, cold sweat breaking out on his forehead.
Alpha pheromones can suppress their own kind, and they have a similar effect on Omegas. The malice in this guard’s pheromones was palpable. Zhao Zhiyi felt dizzy and nauseous, and the gland at the nape of his neck throbbed as if pierced by countless steel needles.
He Linrong watched his suffering with satisfaction. “Drag him into the hallway,” she said calmly. “Just don’t kill him.”
“Yes, President He.” The bodyguards, working for their employer’s pay, obeyed without question and began dragging Zhao Zhiyi out. With the taste of blood in his throat, Zhao Zhiyi cursed the “crazy woman” in his mind. This psychopathic old lady didn’t just torture her son, she didn’t spare outsiders either.
As he scrambled for a way to escape, the door suddenly slammed open with a thunderous bang. He Linrong shrieked, “…You… what are you doing?!”
Stunned, Zhao Zhiyi looked back to see He Linrong pinned against the wall. A fair, slender hand was clamped tightly around her trembling neck!
“Su Jiyu, have you lost your mind?!” He Linrong’s voice wavered. “I am your mother! You dare treat me like this?! Are you trying to strangle me… ack!!!”
Su Jiyu didn’t even let her finish. He tightened his grip. He Linrong struggled, her fingers clawing at Su Jiyu’s hand, but the seemingly frail young man possessed terrifying strength. He didn’t budge, instead, he continued to squeeze. Soon, He Linrong’s face turned a bruised purple as she gasped for air.
She glared at him. “You wouldn’t dare… you…”
“Let’s see,” Su Jiyu whispered. “Maybe I do dare.”
“Let go of President He!!” The two bodyguards were terrified. Forgetting Zhao Zhiyi, they focused on Su Jiyu, fearing he might actually snap her neck. “Don’t do anything reckless!”
Su Jiyu turned his head toward the guard who had been releasing pheromones. The hulking man instinctively sensed danger, but it was too late.
Surging pheromones scented like white tea, sharp as thorns, blanketed the room. Within seconds, the guard collapsed to his knees, clutching his gland and rolling on the floor in excruciating agony.
Zhao Zhiyi was dazed.
Was this… Su Jiyu’s pheromones?
So cold, so fierce, carrying a scent of blood.
If he could force a high-quality Alpha to roll in pain with just his pheromones, how did he end up getting beat up by a bunch of thugs before?
But Zhao Zhiyi had no time for further thought. He Linrong’s face was now a dark, bloated purple, she was on the verge of suffocation. Zhao Zhiyi rushed forward and threw his arms around Su Jiyu. “Su Jiyu! Let go!”
“No,” Su Jiyu’s voice was ice. “I’m going to kill her.”
Zhao Zhiyi grabbed his arm. “Are you crazy?! If you kill her, what happens to the rest of your life?!”
Su Jiyu muttered, “She gave me this life. I’ll just give it back to her.”
“…Su Jiyu!” Zhao Zhiyi couldn’t pull him away. In desperation, he grabbed Su Jiyu’s head and delivered a violent headbutt. “Stop acting like a lunatic! I told you to let go, did you hear me?!”
Whether it was the violence of the headbutt or the sheer volume of his voice, Su Jiyu blinked blankly at him and loosened his grip. He Linrong fell to the floor, coughing violently.
Zhao Zhiyi exhaled in relief, followed immediately by fury. He grabbed Su Jiyu by the ear. “What do you mean ‘give your life back’? Is she even worth it? Su Jiyu, you…”
Searching for an insult, he just blurted out, “You idiotic, bastard jerk!”
Su Jiyu’s ear turned bright red from the tugging, but he didn’t resist. He said plaintively, “She was bullying you.”
Zhao Zhiyi was completely defenseless against this version of Su Jiyu. Even though he had just witnessed the man torture a giant with pheromones, seeing Su Jiyu’s red-rimmed eyes made him feel a surge of pity. It was like seeing that little white cat he used to feed in his past life, the one that would beat up other cats but look heartbreakingly pathetic when its own eyes were scratched.
“Alright, alright,” Zhao Zhiyi said. “You’ve already gotten revenge for me.”
He Linrong finally crawled back from the brink of death. Clutching her throat and leaning against the wall, she rasped, “Su Jiyu, your wings have grown strong, haven’t they? To think you’d dare lay a hand on me!”
Su Jiyu turned around. Out of Zhao Zhiyi’s sight, his expression turned incredibly dark, like a venomous snake ready to strike. “Do you really want to die that badly?”
“You!” He Linrong gritted her teeth. “Don’t think I’m powerless against you now! Don’t forget what I still have in my hands!”
Zhao Zhiyi saw the veins bulging in Su Jiyu’s neck. He instinctively grabbed Su Jiyu’s arm. Su Jiyu looked down at him and offered a small smile. “It’s fine.”
He Linrong took a deep breath. “You’d better not provoke me, or I might do something irreversible.”
“Now, come back with me. Miss Lin has been waiting for you for a long time!”
Su Jiyu’s lashes fluttered. Zhao Zhiyi shook his head gently. “Don’t…”
“I’m sorry.” Su Jiyu suddenly hugged Zhao Zhiyi. Hot tears fell from his eyes, landing on Zhao Zhiyi’s neck. He buried his face deep into the crook of Zhao Zhiyi’s shoulder and choked out, “I was too selfish. I’ve dragged you into this.”
“I told you it’s fine.” Zhao Zhiyi frowned. “You don’t want the marriage, right? Then…”
“I’m sorry,” Su Jiyu repeated. He ruffled Zhao Zhiyi’s hair. “I’ll go back once. I’ll come find you soon.”
Since he had made up his mind, Zhao Zhiyi had doubts but didn’t press further. “Then be careful.”
“Mm.”
Zhao Zhiyi added, “If she hits you again, call me. I’ll help you.”
Su Jiyu: “How will you help?”
Zhao Zhiyi: “I’ll call the police for you.”
Su Jiyu smiled and nodded. “Okay.”
He Linrong snapped impatiently, “Have you two said enough?!”
Su Jiyu let go of Zhao Zhiyi, his face turning cold again. “Let’s go.”
He Linrong suppressed her rage and sneered, turning toward the elevator. Just then, the doors opened, and Meng Ze stepped out in a formal suit.
“Auntie He,” Meng Ze nodded. “Long time no see.”
He Linrong quickly composed herself and smiled. “Indeed, long time. I heard you closed another big deal recently. Congratulations.”
“Thank you,” Meng Ze said flatly. “But Auntie He, your finances haven’t been so smooth lately. Repeated failed bids, and losing that land in the east to the Lin family… that must be a significant loss.”
He Linrong’s expression shifted.
“It seems that land was quite important to you.” A smirk played on Meng Ze’s lips, though his eyes remained cold and mocking. “Otherwise, you wouldn’t be in such a hurry to sell your son to the Lins, would you?”
He Linrong took a breath. “Is this how you speak to your elders?”
“And is it ‘elderly behavior’ to come to my home to insult, threaten, and even use violence against my partner?” Meng Ze’s tone turned razor-sharp.
He Linrong’s heart skipped a beat.
She had heard Meng Ze had no feelings for the Omega Yu Shu’en had forced him to marry. Yet he was turning against her for Zhao Zhiyi’s sake?!
“A misunderstanding,” He Linrong forced a smile. “I came for Su Jiyu. There was just a small friction with Zhao Zhiyi. Don’t be angry. I’ll treat you both to dinner another day to apologize.”
Meng Ze stepped aside. “Don’t let the door hit you.”
His attitude was bordering on blatant disrespect. He Linrong was fuming but held it in.
As he passed Su Jiyu, Meng Ze whispered, “I warned you to stay away from Zhao Zhiyi.”
Su Jiyu remained expressionless, offering only four words: “None of your business.”
The elevator doors closed, and the world finally fell quiet.
Zhao Zhiyi scratched his head. “Why are you here?”
“Just got off the plane.” Meng Ze looked him over. “I was heading to a meeting at the company, but I got word that something happened here. Are you hurt?”
Zhao Zhiyi shook his head, then asked, “Who told you?”
Meng Ze didn’t answer. “Turn around, let me see.”
Zhao Zhiyi spun around. He wasn’t hurt, well, except for that headbutt he gave Su Jiyu, which nearly gave himself a concussion.
“I’m very tough. That old lady’s guards were no match for me,” Zhao Zhiyi boasted with his eyes closed. “You should get back to the office… hiss.”
Zhao Zhiyi pressed his hand to the back of his neck and shook his head. His vision was double. “What’s going on? Suddenly dizzy.”
Meng Ze frowned and supported him, pulling his hand away. He saw that the gland on the back of his neck was swollen and bright red, with the flush spreading across his entire throat.
“Did they use pheromones to suppress you?” Meng Ze asked softly.
Zhao Zhiyi nodded. “It’s pretty miserable.”
“It’s an aftereffect,” Meng Ze said. “I’ve seen your medical report. You were malnourished as a child, so your gland never developed properly. The aftereffects are more severe for you than for most. Do you feel nauseous?”
“I think so…” As he spoke, Zhao Zhiyi gagged. He hadn’t eaten anything all morning, so nothing came up. He was so dizzy he could barely stand, leaning into Meng Ze’s arms. “Damn… this is ‘a bit’ severe?”
Meng Ze wanted to take him to the hospital, but remembering the man’s hatred for the place, he half-carried him to the sofa and called Zheng Xinyun.
“…Pheromone suppression aftereffects?” Dr. Zheng let out a “wow.” “You two really have this ABO-SM thing figured out.”
Meng Ze: “You’re going to lose your medical license because of that mouth of yours.”
“Hey, if that happens, seeing you would be illegal practice.” Zheng Xinyun said. “But these symptoms usually happen to kids. Adults usually just get a bit dizzy for a while. Is it that bad for Zhao Zhiyi because of developmental issues?”
Meng Ze was silent for a few seconds. Seeing Zhao Zhiyi lying motionless on the sofa, he stepped out onto the balcony. “He grew up frequently subjected to pheromone suppression. His body has a stress response.”
Zheng Xinyun frowned, his tone turning serious. “That’s child abuse. No one called the police?”
“He had no other relatives,” Meng Ze said. “And he didn’t seem to have the intention to fight back.”
