- Chapter 25 - A Chance Encounter
The sensation at the tip of his nose was clearly cool, yet Zhao Zhiyi felt it was burning hot. It was just like during Meng Ze’s susceptibility period, that scalding body temperature made his heart tremble slightly.
Meng Ze quickly withdrew his hand and asked, “Is there anything to eat nearby?”
“There’s food, but nothing a young master like you could eat,” Zhao Zhiyi replied. “Better to eat near the hotel.”
Meng Ze hummed in agreement and walked toward where the car was parked. The moonlight and streetlamps stretched his shadow very long. Zhao Zhiyi followed behind him, slowly stepping on his shadow as they moved forward, saying, “But public gambling won’t get someone a life sentence, right?”
“Generally speaking, that’s true.”
Zhao Zhiyi: “Generally speaking?”
Meng Ze: “I pulled a few strings… so like I said, this wasn’t handled in the most upright manner. Don’t learn from it.”
Zhao Zhiyi murmured, “The way you look when you have power and influence is seriously cool.”
Meng Ze nodded. “The way you look when you’re hitting people is also cool.”
Zhao Zhiyi covered the wound on his head. “Stop teasing me. I only got worked up and gave Zhao Jing an opening. Actually, back when I used to fight, I was undefeated.”
Meng Ze: “So impressive.”
Sensing his perfunctory tone, Zhao Zhiyi clicked his tongue and took a few large strides to overtake Meng Ze, refusing to speak to him further.
As Meng Ze had said, dealing with Zhao Jing was a minor matter. They flew back to City A the next day. Zhao Zhiyi kept thinking about how to thank Meng Ze, he needed to thank him for more than just the Zhao Jing incident, and a simple “thank you” felt lacking in sincerity.
However, upon returning to City A, Meng Ze became incredibly busy. Zhao Zhiyi didn’t see him for several days. He did, however, see the headlines from Rong City stating that police, acting on a tip from a concerned citizen, had dismantled a gambling den. They rounded up all the gamblers and discovered the boss was not only a loan shark but also a gang leader with several lives on his hands, he’d likely be facing execution.
Zhao Zhiyi saw Zhao Jing in the photos. His hand was wrapped in gauze, it seemed he really had his finger chopped off. In the news report, Zhao Jing was identified as the boss’s “lackey.” Since the boss was going to be shot, the lackey naturally wouldn’t have a good end.
Zhao Zhiyi stared at his phone in a daze. Zhao Jing was no longer young, and his frame had begun to stoop, but even though the photo was blurry, Zhao Zhiyi could still see the ferocity in his eyes.
Zhao Zhiyi stood up and pulled that old photo he brought back from Rong City out of a drawer. It was over a decade old, yellowed and faded. He planned to take it to a specialized shop for restoration, this was likely the only thing the original owner of this body truly cherished in this world.
“I didn’t occupy your body for nothing,” Zhao Zhiyi tapped the photo with his finger, talking to himself. “I’ve helped you get revenge.”
Having made an appointment online, Zhao Zhiyi headed out with the photo. The shop wasn’t far, located near the dessert shop where he worked. After handing the photo to the owner, he intended to go to the dessert shop for some cake, but as he turned into a small alley, he heard a young thug’s shouting: “Hurry up and hand over the money! You’re dressed so fancy, looking like a celebrity, who’d believe you have no cash!?”
Zhao Zhiyi stopped in his tracks, pulling out his phone to make a “heroic” police report.
“I really… didn’t bring cash,” the victim’s voice was weak as a thread. “Really… I’m not lying to you.”
That voice sounded familiar.
Zhao Zhiyi frowned and looked deep into the alley. Because it was an old district that hadn’t been demolished, the houses were low compared to modern skyscrapers. The alleys were interconnected, mostly inhabited by locals. Looking up, one could see hanging laundry and succulents. There was only one wall-mounted streetlamp, casting a dim light.
But Zhao Zhiyi still saw clearly, the person being blocked against the wall by a group of punks with multi-colored hair was Su Jiyu. He had clearly already taken a beating, his beautiful face was bruised and purple, and his clothes were stained, he looked pitiable.
The punks’ faces were also marked, and for some reason, their voices were trembling: “You, hurry up and hand over the money, and I’ll spare your life. Otherwise, otherwise…”
Zhao Zhiyi thought to himself that their robbery skills were quite unpolished. Holding a knife and speaking without confidence. Su Jiyu was a weak Alpha with no resistance, yet they needed so many people? They were truly useless.
“Hey,” Zhao Zhiyi said, hands in his pockets as he stepped into the light of the streetlamp. “What are you guys doing?”
Seeing someone arrive, the green-haired leader instinctively wanted to run, but for some reason, he stopped and stammered, “Y-y-you mind your own business! Or I’ll beat you up too!”
“Zhiyi?” Su Jiyu’s eyes lit up upon seeing Zhao Zhiyi, but then he added, “Don’t mind me, you should leave…”
Zhao Zhiyi cracked his knuckles, pressed his fingers together, and loosened his neck, muttering to himself, “I didn’t get to fight enough a few days ago. Consider it your unlucky day.”
He beckoned with his finger. “Come on, hit me.”
The green-haired punk had originally only intended to intimidate him, but seeing how provocative he was, he became enraged. He charged at Zhao Zhiyi with the knife. Zhao Zhiyi kicked his wrist, disarming him first, tilted his head to dodge a punch, and then delivered a knee strike while pressing down on the punk’s back, hitting him squarely in the abdomen. The green-haired punk screamed and collapsed to the ground.
“You guys! What are you just standing there for? Can’t you even handle one Omega!?” Green hair spat through gritted teeth. “Get this brat!”
The lackeys snapped out of it and swarmed forward. Zhao Zhiyi had known how to fight since he could walk. Although there were many of them, they were no match for him. With a series of crashes and thuds, he took them all down. Zhao Zhiyi kicked Green hair’s face with his sneaker. “Hey, what did you take from him? Hand it over.”
“I didn’t… didn’t…” Green hair’s features were contorted in pain. “I didn’t take anything from him.”
“Oh, so this robbery is still a work in progress, then?” Zhao Zhiyi stepped on his chest, looking down at him. “You didn’t take anything, but you hit him. Look at what you did to my friend’s face. That face is worth insuring, and you went and ruined it. Does that seem right?”
At the mention of this, Green hair had a massive reaction, tears and snot flowing. Just as he was about to speak, Su Jiyu stumbled over. “Zhiyi, forget it. I’m fine.”
“You’re like this and you say you’re fine!” Zhao Zhiyi said. “I know you’re kind, but these scum deserve a beating.”
Green hair and his lackeys almost convulsed upon hearing the word “kind.” Is this beautiful Omega blind or brainless?!
The thing Green hair regretted most was picking on the passing Su Jiyu ten minutes ago. He never expected that this person, who looked thin, frail, and sickly, could fight so well and with a lethal ferocity. He would never forget the calm smile on Su Jiyu’s face when he snapped Green hair’s left wrist.
This madman had taken on eight of them alone, making all nine cry for their mothers. Just as Su Jiyu was about to stab his eye with the knife, Zhao Zhiyi happened to pass by. Honestly, Green hair really wanted to call for help from the passerby, he would have even preferred being arrested by the police. Who knew Su Jiyu would have an even bigger reaction? He suddenly shoved the knife into Green-hair’s hand: “Hit me.”
“Then rob me.”
Green hair: “?!”
Green hair felt like bowing down to this guy. He was truly terrified and didn’t dare move. Then the psycho Su Jiyu patted his shoulder and said with a smile, “If you don’t do it, I’ll kill you.”
Heaven be witness, besides some petty theft, catcalling, and brawling, he hadn’t done anything truly evil in his life! Why did he have to encounter a psycho who could fight but had a broken brain, and a brainless person who could call that psycho “kind”?!
“You’ve already taught them a lesson,” Su Jiyu said. “I’m sure they won’t dare do it again.”
Green hair slammed his head against the ground. “We won’t! We really won’t ever again!!”
Zhao Zhiyi said in annoyance, “Get lost.”
The thugs scrambled away.
Zhao Zhiyi supported Su Jiyu and sighed. “Why is it every time I see you, you’re covered in injuries… Did the doctor allow you to leave the hospital? Are you going to the shop?”
“…The doctor didn’t allow it,” Su Jiyu said softly. “I snuck out. I went to your house and saw you weren’t there, so I came here to find you.”
Zhao Zhiyi: “Can’t you just listen to the doctor for once? Doctors have it hard too. If you wanted to find me, couldn’t you just call? Why come all this way yourself?”
Su Jiyu pursed his lips. “…You blocked me.”
His amber eyes seemed to shimmer with tears, veiled by long lashes, making him look even more fragile. His voice was barely audible: “Did I do something to make you hate me?”
“Blocked?” Zhao Zhiyi was stunned. He checked his phone and found Su Jiyu’s number really was in the blacklist. Without a doubt, Meng Ze did it, since Meng Ze was the one who bought this new phone. Are Alphas in their susceptibility period really this childish?
“I didn’t block you,” Zhao Zhiyi removed him from the list. “I was wondering why you hadn’t contacted me. I thought you wanted to recover in peace. Forget it, let’s get out of here first and look at your injuries.”
As he turned to help Su Jiyu, Su Jiyu suddenly hugged him. “You didn’t abandon me. That’s wonderful.”
Zhao Zhiyi: “?”
“I thought you hated me and didn’t want to see me, wouldn’t speak to me, and would never come to save me again.”
Zhao Zhiyi knew he was sentimental, but he didn’t realize it was to this extent. He hesitantly patted his head. “You’re overthinking. Meng Ze did it during his susceptibility period. I don’t hate you. Hey… don’t cry.”
“I’m not crying,” Su Jiyu said.
Zhao Zhiyi: “Then is that blood running down your head?! My god… hurry, let’s get out of here first!”
Zhao Zhiyi brought the disheveled Su Jiyu into the dessert shop. The manager was about to close up and was startled by the boss’s appearance: “This… what happened?”
“Long story short,” Zhao Zhiyi said. “In summary, he was robbed by a group of punks nearby.”
The manager’s mouth fell open. “They dared to rob the boss?! They must be tired of living! The boss is…”
“I feel a bit unwell,” Su Jiyu said gently. “Could you help me get the first aid kit?”
“Oh, right, okay.” The manager swallowed the phrase “a real man who was a city wide free combat champion” and hurried off to find the kit.
Zhao Zhiyi helped Su Jiyu sit down and checked his injuries. Although they were superficial, they looked frightening, especially given his old wounds.
“Were you always this disaster prone?” Zhao Zhiyi asked while disinfecting Su Jiyu’s wounds with iodine. “I feel like you’ve been constantly injured since I met you.”
“Is being injured bad?” Su Jiyu asked seriously. “When I’m injured, people care about me.”
Zhao Zhiyi froze. He looked at Su Jiyu’s face and realized he seemed to truly believe this from the bottom of his heart, without any pretense.
“People who truly care about you will care regardless of whether you’re hurt or not,” Zhao Zhiyi frowned. “That way of thinking is wrong.”
Su Jiyu tilted his head. “Then if I weren’t injured, would you still care about me like you do now?”
This question stumped Zhao Zhiyi. He had originally planned to stay as far away from the main leads as possible to avoid complications, but it seemed to have backfired.
