Transmigrated as the Cannon Fodder Boss of the Disabled Heroine - Chapter 15
The tower was in a locked-down state, and Pei Yujiang had no idea how that person had gotten up there. Quite a few onlookers had gathered below, pulling out their phones to record short videos, some were even livestreaming the scene.
Pei Yujiang rushed downstairs, passing by one of the streamers. His livestream title glared brightly on the screen:
“X Bro Live: Young Woman Climbs White Tower to the 20th Floor at Lakeside Park! Donate $3,000 to Follow Her Up Close!”
Below it was a dense stream of comments and donation alerts.
The tower appeared close because of its height, but it was actually a kilometer away. Running on foot was no match for wheels. Spotting a row of neatly parked shared bikes, Pei Yujiang didn’t bother scanning a QR code, she simply “borrowed” someone’s motorcycle, swung her long leg over, and sped off at full throttle.
Pei Yujiang was an expert rider, her speed nothing short of lightning-fast. She left the shouting crowd far behind, her single ponytail whipping in the wind. Without a helmet, her striking, radiant features were on full display, even as she squinted slightly against the sunlight.
Camera flashes, more dazzling than the sun itself, flickered around her. Carefully weaving through the crowd, she raced to the base of the tower, tossed the motorcycle aside, and sprinted inside.
She had trained in rapid climbing techniques, including scaling difficult structures like this tower, finding a foothold was no challenge.
But while rock climbing was normal, scaling a tower like this was bizarre. Not wanting to become the center of attention, Pei Yujiang opted to dash up the tower’s interior instead.
The tower had long been abandoned, its exterior maintained only as a scenic light display while the interior decayed, reinforced with steel bars. How the woman had gotten up there was a mystery.
Debris severely slowed Pei Yujiang’s ascent, but she made it in time, the woman hadn’t jumped yet. Instead, she stood sorrowfully at the tower’s edge, gazing at a few red-beaked water birds soaring in the distance.
Below the towering structure, a lively crowd had gathered. Only a handful were trying to talk her down; their voices were quickly drowned out by the clamor of spectators.
The onlookers had no idea why this young woman wanted to end her life. Many fiddled with their phones, some making calls, others recording videos, all eager to be the first to post and capitalize on the spectacle.
Even jeers faintly reached her ears:
“Jump! Bet she won’t do it!”
“Isn’t that that actress Chen Lulu? Did her sugar daddy dump her?”
The woman, already perched on the railing with one leg over, shuddered at the words “sugar daddy.” The taunt visibly pained her. Chen Lulu’s delicate features twisted in anguish as she gripped the rust-covered railing, poised to leap until a figure silently closed in behind her.
Pei Yujiang stepped onto the railing, pushed off with her feet, and lunged at an unnatural angle. Chen Lulu, consumed by despair, had no time to react before Pei Yujiang yanked her to the ground, leaving her coughing in the dust.
Chen Lulu trembled violently.
As she struggled weakly, Pei Yujiang pinned her with a firm hold, panting as she scolded loudly:
“Do you really want to die that badly? The waters of Yi Lake are deep jumping from the twentieth floor would leave no trace of your body. It won’t be some beautiful drowning scene like in TV dramas. Water will rush into your ears, nose, throat, and mouth. The water might look clean, but years of accumulated dust and debris are definitely in there. Your corpse would be filled with filth!”
“Drowning is death by suffocation. The body is hard to recover, needlessly adding to others’ workload. The retrieved corpse would be foul, dirty, and bloated. Once your stomach fills with water, your skin might even split along its natural creases…”
Chen Lulu: “…”
Her face twisted in pleading fear as she shrank back, silently begging Pei Yujiang to stop. Pei Yujiang released her grip but showed no mercy, about to continue the graphic description when suddenly, Chen Lulu threw herself into her arms.
The omega girl buried her face in Pei Yujiang’s chest, wailing uncontrollably.
Pei Yujiang froze momentarily before awkwardly raising her hands in confusion.
“I just after my last drama did well, directors started wanting to work with me. Going to dinner parties is normal networking! But they, they all reported that I have a sugar daddy, wuuu…”
Chen Lulu was a sweet-faced omega actress, a second-tier celebrity in this world who had recently gained some popularity from a hit drama. Pei Yujiang didn’t follow entertainment news though, she wouldn’t recognize a top star if they stood before her.
Now this omega girl was sobbing in her arms. Pei Yujiang felt utterly helpless afraid to push her away in case she tried something drastic again. She settled for extracting the girl from her embrace while maintaining a firm grip on her arm.
As Chen Lulu poured out her grievances between sniffles, Pei Yujiang half-dragged, half-guided her down the twenty flights from the white tower.
Police were already waiting below after someone reported the incident. When Pei Yujiang handed Chen Lulu over, the actress insisted on getting her contact information. Reluctantly, Pei Yujiang gave her a secondary account.
The pretty omega tearfully thanked her before leaving. Pei Yujiang smiled briefly before hurrying back to the restaurant, where she found the desserts already served, Yu Zhiwan was eating an ice cream cake.
A banana split drizzled with chocolate sauce had been divided, crowned with a generous scoop of ice cream. Rainbow cereal loops and sprinkles adorned the fluffy dessert, making it look incredibly appetizing.
Since transmigrating here, Pei Yujiang had been constantly delighted by the variety of gourmet foods that pampered her previously neglected stomach.
The delicious sight lifted her spirits after the exhausting rescue mission and politely declining the police’s “Good Samaritan” award. She sat down cheerfully.
“Oh,” Seizing the opportunity, Pei Yujiang finally resolved to gradually unravel the female lead’s mysteries. After a few bites, she casually asked, “When I passed by Yuerong’s entrance before, I saw a woman picking you up after work multiple times. What’s your relationship with her?”
She was of course referring to Liu Huanran, the original story’s scumbag alpha who, barring emergencies, would religiously fetch Yu Zhiwan after work every day, practically broadcasting to the world her connection with such a beautiful omega.
However, at least in the company and in front of others, Yu Zhiwan’s attitude toward her was polite yet distant, even somewhat cold. There was no visible trace of ambiguity between them. Yet Yu Zhiwan didn’t outright reject Liu Huanran’s advances either, almost as if she was silently acquiescing, leaving Pei Yujiang utterly confused.
She had already prepared herself to back off if Yu Zhiwan seemed unwilling to explain. To her surprise, when she broached the topic, the Omega merely toyed with her cup, her slender fingers moving gracefully, before responding coolly:
“She’s my fiancée. My family arranged it. I don’t like her.” Yu Zhiwan paused, then added, “My family is all gone now.”
Pei Yujiang opened her mouth but faltered, the words she had intended to say dissolving on her tongue.
She had wanted to remark how rare it was in this day and age for marriages to still be dictated by parental arrangements, but the latter half of Yu Zhiwan’s statement carried a pain so sharp it felt like a knife to the heart.
Yu Zhiwan delivered it with an air of detachment, yet Pei Yujiang noticed when she spoke those words, the woman’s index finger stilled, pressing unconsciously against the cup, her long lashes trembling faintly.
Pei Yujiang had also grown up without ever knowing her parents, but she had been raised by her master and surrounded by her martial siblings. Though she lacked blood relatives, she had never truly lacked family. But Yu Zhiwan, blind and confined to a wheelchair had lost the comfort of parents and kin, adrift like an unmoored reed.
Perhaps her parents had arranged Liu Huanran out of kindness, hoping to secure an Alpha as a “support” for their disabled Omega daughter. Or perhaps Yu Zhiwan was traditional, unwilling to defy her parents’ final wishes, so even if she disliked Liu Huanran, she was trying to accept her.
Pei Yujiang murmured,
“I’m sorry…”
She had inadvertently reopened a wound.
By now, Yu Zhiwan had already composed herself, shaking her head and assuring her, “It’s fine.”
The rest of the meal passed in relative silence. Worried that she had upset her, Pei Yujiang did her best to lighten the mood with amusing anecdotes. Yu Zhiwan obliged with a smile only for a tiny crumb to cling to her cheek in the process.
Too small for Yu Zhiwan to notice, Pei Yujiang pointed it out and handed her a napkin. She had intended to simply pass it over, but the woman leaned toward her instead, bracing her hands on the wheelchair and tilting her face up with visible effort.
The table wasn’t wide, designed for intimate conversation, and the sudden closeness brought Yu Zhiwan within reach close enough for Pei Yujiang to catch the faint, soothing scent of white roses. She had worn her favorite white tea perfume today, and the mingling of tea and rose was intoxicating, almost like an alluring pheromone.
Pei Yujiang felt a flicker of unease at the proximity, but seeing the guileless Omega so unguarded, without a trace of shyness, she quickly dismissed her own strange thoughts.
As she carefully wiped away the crumb, she maintained perfect decorum, ensuring her fingers never once brushed Yu Zhiwan’s skin.
Yu Zhiwan was a natural beauty, her complexion flawless even without makeup, her skin smooth and porcelain-pale. Up close, not a single pore was visible, and once the crumb was gone, her features shone with an effortless elegance, every smile and glance graceful.
In high spirits, Pei Yujiang escorted her downstairs. After confirming Yu Zhiwan didn’t need her to accompany her further, she let her go with a light heart.
But she wasn’t quite at ease about Yu Zhiwan. Originally planning to leave only after seeing Yu get into her car, she instead noticed Yu hadn’t driven here today.
The lakeside park had fresh air and dedicated tactile paving for the blind, perhaps she’d parked outside. Pei Yujiang still felt uneasy and, after some hesitation, decided to follow. This decision led her to discover something amiss.
As a blind person, Yu Zhiwan naturally had keen awareness. At first, she was leisurely pushing her automatic wheelchair forward, but gradually picked up speed.
With Pei Yujiang’s years of trained sharpness, she quickly spotted someone tailing Yu Zhiwan, pretending to casually cross paths.
