Chapter 76: Seeds Can Be Given to Others
Regarding the matters Sun Qiuping brought up, Qian Yue’e didn’t dare make the decision on her own. “Second Sister-in-law, I can’t agree to this myself. I have to ask the children and their father.”
Sun Qiuping was a bit surprised—not because Qian Yue’e couldn’t decide alone, but because she included the children in that statement. “Alright, I understand.”
“Wait here a moment, I’ll go ask them.”
Sun Qiuping watched as Qian Yue’e called the children over from the field before they all walked toward Yang Lao San. This stirred something in Sun Qiuping’s heart. In most families, the head of the household would decide such things; why would the children be involved? What could they possibly understand?
However, seeing this, Sun Qiuping suddenly realized that for a family to be this harmonious, perhaps the children’s thoughts should be valued—they were part of the family, weren’t they? Look at them: Yang Lao San’s family was truly happy.
…
The Two Choices
Qian Yue’e relayed Sun Qiuping’s words to the group. They were all shocked to hear that the second branch had also separated.
“Mom, you’re saying Second Aunt wants to follow our lead in planting?” Yang Xue asked.
“Yes. She said since they have a mu of inferior land, and we bought so much of it, we must have a plan. She wants to follow us.”
Yang Xue hadn’t expected Sun Qiuping to be so sharp. Since the crops were things Yang Xue had “dreamt” of, everyone looked at her to see what she thought.
Yang Xue smiled. “Sure, let her plant. But I won’t give her the seeds for free; she has to buy them from me.”
Yang Xue had already planned to sell seeds to the villagers once her family started making money. Prospering alone would only make them targets of jealousy and danger; if the whole village could make a little money through them, it would be different. She was willing to lead the village toward wealth—but only the kind-hearted ones. The wicked ones wouldn’t get a single sprout from her.
Yang霜 (Yang Shuang) frowned. “Xue’er, are you sure? What if she fails to grow them? Won’t she blame us?”
Yang Xue gave her sister a thumbs-up. “Great point, Sister. You’re thinking ahead. That’s why we’ll sign a contract.”
The family was stunned. Signing a contract just to sell some seeds?
Yang Xue ignored their shock and continued, “We’ll give buyers two choices: One, they buy the seeds and take full responsibility for growing and selling—they bear all the risk. Two, I give them the seeds for free, but they must sell the harvest back to us at a wholesale price we set. We then resell it at a profit, which is none of their business. In this second case, if they follow our methods and it still fails, we provide some compensation.”
With improved seeds and Spirit Spring water, Yang Xue wasn’t worried about them failing. She concluded, “Anyway, with a contract, they won’t be able to cause trouble later even if they want to.”
Yang Lao San and the others nodded blankly. “Oh… okay.”
…
Selling the Land
Qian Yue’e then asked about the one mu of land. Everyone looked at Yang Lao San, who scratched his head, unsure.
Yang Xue spoke up: “Sell it. That plot is too far from here. It’ll be too much work and a waste of energy to run back and forth to take care of just one mu.”
Qian Yue’e agreed, mainly out of sympathy for Sun Qiuping. Buying from them would be cheaper for Sun than buying from the Village Chief. As a fellow woman, she wanted to help. The rest of the family eventually agreed; fifteen mu was already enough to handle without adding a distant plot.
Finally, the family reached a consensus. Sun Qiuping, who had been waiting nervously, saw Qian Yue’e and Yang Xue walking back toward her.
“Third Sister-in-law, how is it?” Sun Qiuping asked immediately.
Qian Yue’e looked at Yang Xue. “Let Xue’er explain.” Though they knew the plan, they felt Yang Xue could express it much better.
Sun Qiuping looked at Yang Xue, amazed that the family seemed to take cues from a young girl.
“Second Aunt, you want to plant the same things as us?”
Sun Qiuping nodded. “Yes.” With only inferior land, she was “treating a dead horse as if it were alive”—trying anything that might work.
“We plan to grow vegetables. Did you know that?”
“I guessed as much,” Sun Qiuping replied.
“You can follow us,” Yang Xue said, “but the vegetables we are planting are different from the ones here. They are varieties that don’t yet exist in the Great An Dynasty.”
Sun Qiuping was shocked, but also delighted. She had come to the right person!
“Because these seeds are rare and precious, we can’t just give them away.”
Sun Qiuping nodded understandingly. “How much? I’ll buy them.”
