Chapter 74: Secretly Doing Big Things
Old Man Yang didn’t dare cross the law. At this moment, he had nothing left to say—and even less courage to say it.
Seeing that he was silenced, the County Magistrate spoke: “Since you acknowledge the legal regulations, then you agree to Sun’s request for a family separation.”
“Since the family is to be split, you all should discuss how exactly the assets will be divided.”
As soon as the Magistrate finished speaking, Old Man Yang snapped his head up. “Lord Magistrate, a separation should be proposed by my son. As for this woman, Sun, making the proposal, I naturally cannot agree.”
Old Man Yang’s point actually carried some weight. For a moment, everyone’s gaze shifted to Yang Lao Er (the second brother).
Old Man Yang and the eldest branch sent looks of pure threat, while Sun Qiuping and her children, Yang Shui and the others, looked at him with desperate hope. Everyone else was simply curious, wondering what choice Yang Lao Er would make.
Being stared at by so many people, Yang Lao Er felt paralyzed. Sun Qiuping didn’t hold much hope for him; he had always been blindly obedient to his parents. But… could a miracle happen?
The Magistrate looked at Yang Lao Er and asked, “Yang Lao Er, what do you say?”
Yang Lao Er looked at Old Man Yang and jumped at the old man’s warning glare. He then looked back at his wife and children. They were watching him with such tension and expectation that he didn’t want to let them down.
“I… I…”
Fearing he would say he didn’t want to separate in the next second, Sun Qiuping quickly cut in: “Yang Lao Er, if you don’t care for me and the children, we’ll act as if you don’t exist from now on.”
Yang Lao Er was caught in a terrible dilemma. Old Man Yang glared hatefully at Sun Qiuping before turning a pathetic face to his son. “Lao Er, you can’t abandon your father.”
Seeing Old Man Yang play the “filial piety” card, Sun Qiuping nudged her children. They immediately looked at their father with tearful eyes. “Dad…”
Yang Lao Er was truly torn. Actually, he wanted to separate, but the thought that Old Man Yang might disown him terrified him.
Seeing his hesitation, Sun Qiuping delivered the final blow: “Father of my children, think of Lao San (the third brother) and his family. Do you want the kids and me to live the way they used to?”
Yang Lao Er definitely did not want that. “Dad…” the children called out again.
Sun Qiuping issued her ultimatum: “Yang Lao Er, if you don’t agree to separate, I will take the children and hang ourselves right in front of you. Since we’ll be tortured to death by this family eventually anyway, we might as well die now and get it over with!”
If glares could kill, Old Man Yang would have murdered Sun Qiuping a thousand times over.
“Children, let’s go! Your father doesn’t want you anymore. Let’s go!”
“Dad!”
Afraid that Sun Qiuping had truly lost hope and would lead his children to their deaths, Yang Lao Er shouted, “Separation! I want to separate!”
Having said it, he didn’t dare look up at Old Man Yang. He knew without looking that his father’s gaze would be terrifying. Hearing this, Sun Qiuping’s heart finally settled, and she burst into tears, hugging her children.
Watching them huddle together crying, Yang Lao Er felt a pang in his chest and suddenly felt firm in his decision.
Old Man Yang was nearly driven mad with rage. “Fine! Separate! Everyone get out! All of you, get the hell out of my sight!”
After his outburst, he caught the Magistrate’s eye and realized the official was still there. He quickly lowered his head. “Since we’re separating, let me tell you—what you get from this house will be exactly what Lao San got. Don’t even think about getting a single penny more.”
Yang Lao Er frowned. Sometimes he wondered if only the eldest brother was their biological child and if he and Lao San were just picked up from the streets. How else could they be so heartless?
Sun Qiuping knew it was impossible to get more out of them, and there was no use arguing, so she agreed immediately. “Fine.”
The Village Chief soon drafted the separation papers. After the thumbprints were pressed, Old Man Yang threatened Yang Lao Er in a low, ominous tone, saying he was ungrateful and that when the family became wealthy in the future, Lao Er shouldn’t dream of sharing the benefits.
Sun Qiuping almost laughed. With their temperament, dreaming of getting rich was just a pipe dream.
Sun Qiuping had no intention of living on the mountain like Yang Lao San. It was dangerous and inconvenient for farm work. She asked the Village Chief for a deserted courtyard in the village. Even though it was abandoned, it was still someone’s property, so they had to pay rent.
The courtyard was a wreck—dilapidated and unmaintained since the flood. The walls and roof were in such poor state they were an eyesore. The Chief, being kind, charged them a symbolic two weeks a month.
Sun Qiuping was very grateful. They moved in that same day. Luckily the weather was good, so they didn’t have to worry about rain that night. They could slowly repair it until it was livable.
…
Working in the Shadows
Yang Lao San’s family was completely unaware of the drama at the old house. Having worked all day, they were surprised to find they weren’t very tired. They assumed it was because they were finally free and happy.
In reality, it was because Yang Xue had been adding Spirit Spring water to their drinking supply. The water was slightly sweeter, but since mountain spring water is naturally sweet, they never suspected a thing.
After dinner, the family chatted around the fire until they grew sleepy. Without any entertainment in this era, everyone went to bed early.
Yang Xue had “big things” to do tonight. She waited until everyone was fast asleep, then lit some calming incense she had prepared in her Space to ensure they stayed under. Then, she sneaked down the mountain alone.
The mountain path was treacherous at night, but since no one was around, she felt safe using a solar-powered lamp from her Space for light.
Arriving at their fields, she decided to tackle two mu today. One mu was nearly cleared already; using her machinery, it would take minutes. Including the uncleared mu, three or four hours would be enough. She could finish and still get some “beauty sleep” before morning.
