Chapter 69: The Village Chief Looks for Yang Xue
When Eldest Brother Yang went to collect his meat, he overheard the villagers talking about how Yang Lao San (the third brother) had spent all his money on buying land. He immediately rushed back to tell Old Man Yang.
Upon hearing that all the money had been used to purchase land—and poor-quality “inferior land” at that—Old Man Yang was, predictably, fit to burst with rage.
He brought the entire family over with the intent of “educating” Yang Lao San, seizing the land deeds, and going to the Village Chief to demand a refund. He had it all planned out: if the Village Chief refused, the whole family would cause a scene at his doorstep, accusing him of swindling Yang Lao San into buying bad land and heartlessly refusing a refund.
With the County Magistrate currently in the village, he figured the Village Chief would be pressured into returning the money just to save face. It was a beautiful plan, but things did not go according to his script.
Eldest Brother Yang was no match for Huang Zhongcai; in fact, he couldn’t even manage a couple of moves against him. He was quickly beaten to the ground, unable to even crawl back up. Meanwhile, Yang Chunlin and the others were being “rubbed into the dirt” by Yang Xue and her siblings, their mouths full of pleas for mercy.
Old Man Yang’s eyes rolled back, and he fainted on the spot.
Yang Xue stood up and looked at Second Uncle Yang’s family. “Second Uncle, do you want to take them back, or do you want to end up like them?”
Second Uncle Yang swallowed hard. “I… I’ll take them back.” His family scrambled to drag away the bodies strewn across the ground.
Dusting off her hands, Yang Xue walked over to Yang Lao San and waved a hand in front of his face. “Dad, snap out of it!”
Yang Lao San blinked, swallowing nervously. “Your grandfather and the others…”
Yang Xue shrugged. “It’s fine. We didn’t actually do anything to Grandfather. As for Eldest Uncle and the cousins, at most it was a mutual scuffle—it’s just that they couldn’t beat us. Besides, they came looking for trouble first. We have the moral high ground.”
Yang Lao San nodded, feeling relieved. “As long as we’re in the right, then it’s fine.”
With the troublemakers gone, the family returned to their work.
…
A Sudden Visit
Nearby, hidden behind some shrubs, Wei Xiao and Lin Yuansheng were watching. Lin Yuansheng was quite excited. “Young Master, this little girl is truly interesting.”
Wei Xiao frowned. “Are you that much older than her?”
Lin Yuansheng shook his head, confused. “No, maybe only three or four years.”
“Then stop calling her ‘little girl’ every other sentence.”
“Oh…” Lin Yuansheng scratched his head.
The two approached Yang Xue. She was surprised to see them—could they be here to buy ginseng? That wouldn’t be bad; no one hates making money. However, such a transaction would have to stay “under the table.”
Yang Xue glanced at Qian Yue’e and the others, then gave Lin Yuansheng a meaningful look, signaling: My family is here, let’s talk privately.
Lin Yuansheng, however, completely missed the hint. He found her winking and grimacing funny and asked with a grin, “What’s wrong? Does something matter with your eyes?”
Huang Zhongqing, seeing another group of strangers arrive so soon after the last fight, immediately went on high alert, ready to run and call her brother. She relaxed slightly only when she saw Lin Yuansheng speaking to Yang Xue without hostility. Yang Shuang and the others were also curious as to why the Village Chief’s nephew was there.
Yang Xue was speechless. Does this Lin Yuansheng not know how to read the room?
“Hehe, is there something you need?” She tried another look at him, signaling him not to speak out of turn.
Lin Yuansheng chuckled again, about to ask if her eyes were truly okay, but was stopped by Wei Xiao. Yang Xue noticed Wei Xiao’s intervention and thought to herself: Now there’s a smart person. This Lin Yuansheng is hopeless.
Yang Shuang stepped forward, asking guardedly, “Is there something we can help you with?”
Lin Yuansheng finally spoke up. “Nothing for us. The Village Chief is looking for Yang Xue; he wants her to come back to the village for a bit.”
Both Yang Xue and Yang Shuang frowned. Yang Xue wasn’t expecting anything terrible, just wondering what the Chief could possibly want. Yang Shuang, however, was full of worry.
Seeing their expressions change, Wei Xiao stepped in to clarify. “Don’t be nervous. The Village Chief just wants to consult her about the method for saving the rice crops.” He then shot a cold glance at Lin Yuansheng for not being clearer.
Lin Yuansheng rubbed his nose. He didn’t think he’d said anything wrong—how was he supposed to know they’d get so tense?
Yang Xue remained skeptical. Saving the rice? If they believed her, they should just do it; if not, then don’t. Why call her over?
Yang Shuang, who knew nothing of this “saving the rice” business, was bewildered. “What method for saving the rice?”
Yang Xue turned to her sister. “Sister, it’s fine. Since the Chief is asking, I’ll go. I’ll explain everything when I get back.” She then looked at the two men. “Let’s go.”
…
The Walk Back
As the three walked toward the village, Yang Xue and Wei Xiao remained silent. Lin Yuansheng, however, kept pestering her with questions.
“How do you know how to save the rice? I heard them talking, and it actually sounded quite plausible.” (Wei Xiao was also curious; Yang Xue seemed very different from a typical village girl.)
“I heard it from someone else,” Yang Xue replied simply.
Lin Yuansheng nodded. “Hey! Why did your family buy so much inferior land? Can you even grow decent crops on that?”
“Whether we can grow good food or not, you’ll see once we harvest.”
“Is it fun living on the mountain? Are there lots of bugs biting you at night?”
“If you’re really that curious,” Yang Xue said, “go spend a night there and find out for yourself.”
Lin Yuansheng shook his head vigorously. “No, no, no. I’ll pass.” Living at home was comfortable; he wasn’t foolish enough to go looking for hardship on a mountain.
