Chapter 68: The Brawl Breaks Out
Huang Zhongqing was quick-witted; she had already bolted to fetch Huang Zhongcai and Yang San.
Meanwhile, Yang Shuang faced Old Man Yang, though she didn’t dare be outright disrespectful yet. “Grandpa, my parents are busy. If you have something to say, you can tell me.”
“You wretched girl, what business is it of yours?” Old Man Yang barked. “I told you to fetch your parents, so fetch them!” He raised his hand, ready to strike her.
Yang Shuang didn’t just stand there and take it like she used to. In the past, she feared that resisting would result in her family being punished or starved. Now, they didn’t rely on the clan for food anymore. What was there to fear?
She tilted her head, dodging the blow. “Grandpa, the County Magistrate is in the village. I haven’t done anything wrong. If you hit me, I can take this to him.”
Old Man Yang flinched at the mention of the Magistrate, but his face remained twisted in rage. “You are my granddaughter! Can I not even discipline you? Even the Magistrate can’t interfere in a family’s private affairs.”
Yang Xue stepped forward, her eyes full of mockery. “Oh? Is that so? Then let’s go call the Magistrate right now and see if he cares about a grandfather hitting his granddaughter for no reason.”
“Rebellion! Pure rebellion!” Old Man Yang fumed. “You group of foul girls… with this lack of respect for your elders, I’d like to see what kind of decent family would ever want to marry you!”
Yang Xue nearly died laughing. What kind of threat is that supposed to be? Zero damage.
Yang Yu puffed out her cheeks. “Hmph! If they don’t want us, then they don’t. We don’t care!”
Yang Tian chimed in immediately, “If no one wants my sisters, I’ll take care of them! We don’t need anyone else.”
Yang Shuang frowned, slightly worried. She knew these cold-hearted people might try to ruin their reputations in the village. A girl’s reputation was fragile; if it were destroyed, marriage would indeed be difficult. She didn’t care for herself, but she didn’t want her younger sisters to be hurt.
Yang Xue let out a boisterous laugh. “Hahaha! If no one wants us, so be it! We’ll just ‘marry’ (recruit) someone into the family ourselves!”
Everyone present was stunned. A girl recruiting a husband to live with her family? In this era, such a bold reversal of tradition was practically blasphemy.
…
Overheard
Not far away, Wei Xiao and Lin Yuansheng froze in their tracks.
Lin Yuansheng pointed at Yang Xue, whispering to Wei Xiao, “Young Master, did you hear that? That girl says she won’t marry out; she wants to take a husband in! She’s certainly got a mouth on her.”
Wei Xiao had heard it clearly. Bold indeed. As for why they were there, Wei Xiao himself couldn’t quite explain his impulse. Earlier, villagers had approached the Village Head to ask if Yang Xue’s method for saving the rice was actually viable. The Village Head was confused, but upon learning she had taught them, he decided to consult her. Wei Xiao, remembering the events of the previous night, had volunteered to find her.
…
The Confrontation Escalates
Old Man Yang glared at Yang Xue. “Recruit a husband? Dream on! Who would ever agree to marry into a family like yours? Pure fantasy.”
Yang Xue looked at him coolly. “In the future, the threshold to our house will be very high. You don’t need to worry about it—and frankly, you aren’t worthy of worrying about us.”
“You—” Old Man Yang’s hand flew up again.
But before it could land, his wrist was caught in a vice-like grip. It was Huang Zhongcai.
Huang Zhongcai stared at him coldly. “What do you think you’re doing?”
“Who are you?!” Old Man Yang shrieked as his wrist throbbed. “Mind your own business! I’m disciplining my granddaughter!”
Yang the Eldest rushed over. “Dad, he’s the brother of the third brother’s wife!”
“Pah! Qian Yue’e’s brother, is it?” Old Man Yang spat. “Does her brother have the right to hit her father-in-law? If you touch me, Qian Yue’e will be branded as a woman who disrespects her elders. Try it!”
Yang San looked torn. “Dad, what do you want? Do you have to drive our family to death to be happy?”
Huang Zhongcai shoved the old man’s hand away. “I won’t hit you. But if you bully my sister or her children, I’ll bully your sons and your grandsons instead. They aren’t enough to withstand even one of my blows. You’d better weigh that carefully.” His gaze swept over Yang the Eldest and the others like a predator.
Old Man Yang pointed a trembling finger at Yang San. “Yang San! Is this how you let an outsider treat your father?”
Yang San looked away. “My brother-in-law did nothing wrong.”
To be defied again and again by a son he had always considered weak made Old Man Yang feel like his head was about to explode. “Yang San! Do you even want to acknowledge me as your father anymore?”
Fearing Yang San might soften, Yang Xue cut in: “Who would want to acknowledge a trashy father like you?”
Old Man Yang lunged to kick her, but Huang Zhongcai intercepted, kicking his leg aside. The old man stumbled and was only saved from falling by Yang the Elder and Yang Chunlin.
“Yang San!” the Eldest brother roared. “You’re even hitting Dad now? Are you even human?”
“I didn’t touch him,” Yang San said, frowning.
“If he hits him, it’s the same as you hitting him!”
“Little Uncle, do it!” Yang Xue shouted, then turned to the others. “Everyone, charge!”
Huang Zhongcai shoved Old Man Yang aside and headed straight for the Eldest and Second brothers. Yang the Second brother immediately backed away, waving his hands. “Big brother, this has nothing to do with me! I’m just passing through!”
Huang Zhongcai ignored him for now and focused on the Eldest. Meanwhile, Yang Xue and Huang Zhongqing led Yang Yu and Yang Tian in a charge against Yang Chunlin and the other cousins.
Sun Qiuping had long since pulled her children to a safe distance. Yang Shuang, seeing her younger siblings rushing into the fray, looked around frantically before grabbing the small shovel Yang Yu had dropped and joining in.
As the chaotic brawl erupted, both Yang San and Old Man Yang stood frozen in shock. Yang San hadn’t expected Yang Xue to actually start a fight, and Old Man Yang certainly hadn’t expected his plan to backfire so spectacularly. He had thought that by bringing the whole clan, he could intimidate Yang San into handing over the land deed. This was not how he imagined the day would go.
