Chapter 53: Framing Yang Xue for Assaulting Her Elders
Following her discovery, and seeing that Huang Zhongcai had not yet emerged, Yang Xue decided to test it herself.
She realized she could either physically vanish on the spot and enter the Space, or she could simply project her consciousness inside.
This is perfect, she thought. If I ever run into danger, I can just hide directly inside the Space. This revelation filled her with immense joy.
When Huang Zhongcai finally led his sister out, he was met with the sight of Yang Xue leaning against the ruined temple wall, munching on an apple.
Didn’t we just leave the market without buying any fruit? Where did that apple come from? he wondered.
Seeing them come out, Yang Xue pulled two apples from her basket and handed them over. “Here, eat up. I got bored waiting for you and picked these in the woods nearby.”
Huang Zhongcai was baffled. He and his sister had lived in this temple for a while, and he had scavenged those woods many times for food, but he had never seen apples this vibrant and tempting.
“We shouldn’t, you should keep…”
Yang Xue cut him off. “Just eat. They’re just wild fruits from the roadside.”
Reluctantly, Huang Zhongcai accepted. He then introduced his sister. “This is my younger sister, Huang Zhongqing.”
“Nice to meet you. I’m Yang Xue.” She was about to tell her to call her “Sister Xue,” but thought better of it and stayed quiet. “Did you explain everything I told you to your sister?”
Huang Zhongcai nodded. “Yes, everything is clear.”
Yang Xue looked at Huang Zhongqing. “From now on, call me Yang Xue. Don’t get it wrong. If you fail to do what your brother promised, I will have to send you away.”
“Yes, I understand,” the girl replied softly. She was thin and fragile, her cheeks sunken and her clothes a mess of patches.
“Let’s go. It’s time to head back.”
…
The Return to Niao’er Village
The three of them set off toward the village. As they entered, Huang Zhongcai expected her to head into the center of the village, but Yang Xue made a turn, leading them into an increasingly remote area.
He immediately grew wary. “Where are we going?”
“Home, of course,” Yang Xue replied nonchalantly.
Turning back, she saw the suspicion in their eyes and couldn’t help but laugh. “I’ve already bought you; isn’t it a bit late to start being afraid?”
“Besides, you’re a martial artist. Are you really afraid of a little girl like me?”
Huang Zhongcai relaxed slightly at her laugh. “But… isn’t your house in the village?”
“Nope. My family lives on the mountain. We don’t have a house; we live in a cave.” She added, “By the way, since you’re with us now, you’ll have to put up with living in a cave too.”
Both siblings were stunned. A family with the money to buy servants was living in a cave? They had assumed Yang Xue’s family was one of the wealthy households in the village.
Sensing their confusion, Yang Xue gestured to herself. “Look at my tattered clothes. Do I look rich to you? But don’t worry—now that I’ve bought you, I can at least guarantee you’ll have enough to eat.”
Hearing they would be fed was enough for Huang Zhongcai. Besides, even if she couldn’t feed them, he had no choice now—his deed of sale was in her hands.
As they neared the mountain, Yang Xue reminded them again: “Remember, the moment you enter this village, you must stay in character. Understood?”
They nodded solemnly. “Understood!”
…
Trouble at the Cave
As they approached the cave, Yang Xue’s sharp ears caught the sound of a heated argument.
Damn! The old Yang family must have found them. She didn’t know if her parents, Yang San and Qian Yue’e, were back yet. If only Yang Shuang and the two little ones were home, they would be in trouble.
“The cave is just ahead. I’m going on ahead, you two will catch up quickly!”
Yang Xue sprinted forward. Huang Zhongcai and his sister exchanged a look and quickly followed.
“Uncle! This is our grain! You can’t take it!”
“Bad men! Stealing our food! I’ll bite you… ouch!”
“Let go of Xiaoyu and Xiaotian! We’ve already split the family—what right do you have to steal our things?!”
“Bah! So what if the family is split? Your father still has to show filial piety to his parents! Today, no matter what, this grain is… AHH!”
When Yang Xue arrived, she saw Yang Tian clutching a bag of grain, trying to stop Yang Eldest from taking it. Yang Yu was clinging to his uncle’s leg, trying to bite him. Yang Shuang was being restrained by Yang Chunlin, Yang Miao, and Yang Chunshu.
Seeing Yang Eldest shouting and bullying them, Yang Xue’s blood boiled. She leaped forward and delivered a swift, powerful kick to his backside.
Caught off guard, Yang Eldest flew forward two or three meters, crashing into the dirt with a howl of pain.
Yang Chunlin and the others flinched when they saw Yang Xue return. However, remembering they had the numbers, they relaxed—slightly. They were still wary, as Yang Xue was the girl who dared to beat their own grandmother.
They had only come up to steal the supplies because they heard the “evil girl” was out. They hadn’t expected her to return so soon. They blamed Yang Shuang and the kids for delaying them; otherwise, the grain would have been back at the main house by now.
“Second Sister! You’re back!” Yang Yu and Yang Tian cried out in joy. To them, her return meant they were saved.
After his initial howl, Yang Eldest turned to see Yang Xue. He was scared for a second, but then began to scream: “Shu’er! Go get people! This wretched girl Yang Xue is hitting her elders!”
“I want everyone to see her true colors!”
Yang Chunshu immediately ran off to fetch help. Most of the villagers’ houses were repaired, so the magistrate had assigned some of them to help mine the mountainside nearby. He could easily find a crowd there.
Yang Shuang’s face went pale with panic. “Xue’er… when they come, we’ll say I was the one who kicked him, okay?”
Yang Xue gently rubbed her sister’s back. “Sister, relax. It’s fine. I can handle this.”
As she spoke, Yang Xue grabbed a bag of rice and a bag of flour and hauled them into the cave. Yang Chunlin and Yang Miao tried to block her, only to be stopped by a tall, imposing figure.
Only then did they notice the two strangers.
Strangers? Even better! they thought. Now she won’t be able to deny that she beat her uncle.
Yang Chunlin and Yang Miao exchanged a triumphant glance. This time, they were going to make sure the charge of “assaulting an elder” stuck to Yang Xue for good.
