- Chapter 16 - The Evil God Sorcerer Emperor, How Terrifying
After a night of pursuit and escape, the pirate ship had utilized the cover of darkness and its familiarity with the terrain to temporarily shake off the encirclement of the Sorcerer Demon Tribe soldiers.
High in the sky hung a blazing sun, its light pouring down and scorching every inch of the exposed deck.
The hull slapped against the ocean surface as it sailed against the waves, looking like it was dancing on a washboard. The bow was tossed up slightly before dropping rapidly, creating a rhythmic thump-thump as it broke the water.
“Urgh!”
Bai Rui leaned over the railing, his face pale, feeling half-dead from the swaying.
He clearly had nothing left to vomit, but the ship continued to pitch and roll. On the deck, the lingering stench of slimy, stinking fish scales, uncleaned for years, wafted up in a foul odor.
The spasms in his stomach continued uncontrollably, sending waves of acid upward.
Having grown up in the North, he simply couldn’t handle sea travel.
On the deck, the newly captured slaves had already begun their grueling labor. Each one looked thin and sallow, their complexions sickly. Some had also emptied their stomachs, yet they were still forced to endure heavy physical toil.
The “crack-crack” of whipping resounded across the deck as the Annam pirates shouted in unintelligible dialects, urging them on with furious grumbles.
Contrasted against the group of slaves and the short Annam pirates, A-Wu’s height was exceptionally striking.
He tried his best to hunch his shoulders and back as he leaned against the railing, gently patting Bai Rui’s back. He whispered, “Your Highness, are you alright?”
Bai Rui waved a hand, letting out another uncontrollable dry heave.
When the One Eyed pirate passed by with his two lackeys, he only gave Bai Rui a cool glance: “Miss Batella, our Captain has finished his nap and is awake. He now invites you to join him for breakfast.”
Bai Rui straightened his waist and looked at One Eye. “I can’t eat a thing right now.”
Having vomited until only gastric acid remained, he truly had no appetite.
“However, our Captain insists on inviting you. If he doesn’t see you now, there might be even greater trouble.”
Sea birds cried out as they skimmed past the ship. Bai Rui took a deep breath and finally let go of the railing he had been gripping so tightly.
“Fine. Lead the way.”
The two of them walked toward the cabin in silence, acting as if they had barely met and hadn’t spoken more than a few words.
The whole tiger skin was still hanging right at the entrance.
Bai Rui’s gaze fell on the tiger skin, ignoring the crude leers and the rising whistles of the pirates surrounding them.
But before they even stepped into the cabin, a massive crash echoed from within.
Bang!
It sounded like something had been smashed to pieces, followed by a furious roar: “Dammit! This pig slop isn’t even fit for dogs!”
Judging by the coarse voice, it was Captain Jayne, the man who, last night, had claimed he would give this ship to Bai Rui as a dowry.
Immediately after, someone tried to coax him: “Captain, there’s nothing we can do. Didn’t you already behead that chef from the East and throw him into the sea to feed the sharks?”
“What if I killed him? I’ll kill one or two a day if I feel like it!”
The Captain’s enraged roar vibrated through the air.
“Dammit, I don’t care! Go find a solution. If you can’t, I’ll have your head chopped off and used as a ball, just like Old One Eye’s brother!”
Bai Rui’s brows twitched almost imperceptibly. He glanced at One Eye, the man’s expression didn’t change much, likely because his skin had hardened to the point of being unable to form large expressions but his eyes were exceptionally dark, and his hands were clenched into tight fists.
So, that was it.
The Captain had killed his brother.
No wonder One Eye had used the secrets of the Annam pirates to exchange for an unspeakable conspiracy with him last night.
Thinking back to that scene, Bai Rui narrowed his eyes. He then lifted his chin, letting the sunlight hit his fair cheeks. He adjusted his hat brim and, without sparing a single glance at his surroundings, lifted his skirt and walked inside.
Standing to the side, A-Wu kept his hands tucked into his sleeves. From beneath the edge of his hood, his narrow eyes slanted upward as he watched Bai Rui silently, the corners of his thin lips curling slightly.
As the group entered the cabin, Bai Rui nearly stepped on the shards of plates scattered across the floor.
The furious Captain Jayne was currently using his foot to mercilessly stomp on the face of a slave collapsed beneath the wooden table.
The surrounding sailors also had wounds on their faces, their hardened skin still bore scars that were difficult to heal.
This Captain truly had a terrible temper, being violently aggressive toward everyone equally.
One Eye stood at the door for two seconds before putting on a fawning smile. He stepped over the mess and sidled up to the Captain.
He rubbed his hands together, smiling as his small mustache twitched. “Boss Jayne, what’s wrong? Is the food not to your liking?”
Slap!
A palm struck One Eye’s face, twisting it once more. He merely smiled, wiped the corner of his mouth, turned back, and continued to smile subserviently.
He listened to Captain Jayne’s angry bark: “Dammit, can’t you see? Why are you even asking?”
“If you bring me this pig slop again, I’ll throw all you useless wastes into the sea to feed the fish.”
Captain Jayne took a swig of wine and spat. “Dammit, the wine is bitter and the food is foul. We endure so much hardship at sea just to enjoy good food, fine wine, and money. Now we’re eating this pig slop every day!”
One Eye knelt half-way by Jayne’s feet, looking up with a sycophantic grin. “Captain, I have a great idea that can solve your problem.”
Captain Jayne’s eyes rolled over, glaring at One Eye.
The fury in his gaze had not yet subsided.
“What’s your plan?”
One Eye: “Captain, didn’t we just bring many new people on board? Surely among them, there are one or two who are good at cooking?”
“That previous chef from the East, wasn’t he also discovered among the slaves we caught on the road?”
Jayne narrowed his eyes, then suddenly grabbed One Eye by the back of the neck. “Dammit, are you trying to fool me? Look at those slaves we caught, which one of them looks Oriental? They look like they’ve lived rough lives, what kind of good food could they make?”
Held by the neck and kneeling, One Eye continued to look up with that fawning smile: “Captain, have you forgotten? We have new visitors on our ship as well.”
Captain Jayne paused for a long moment before slowly shifting his gaze toward the cabin door.
Standing there were two figures, one tall, one slender, their silhouettes outlined by the sunlight from outside.
The pirate captain’s venomous little eyes squinted, and then he grinned. “I didn’t even notice… my little beauty. Though you are the mistress of five sheriffs and a local Annamese through and through, I originally thought you were just pretending to be a noble human aristocrat. I didn’t expect you to actually have an Oriental face.”
“Darling.”
As he spoke, Captain Jayne let go of One Eye and stepped over the body of the sobbing slave.
He walked over, giggling. “What a surprise. It was too dark last night to see clearly. Now that I look closely, your Oriental features are truly captivating.”
Jayne approached, his eyes stripping Bai Rui bare with his gaze. “My honorable Miss Batella, did you team up with that idiot to try and get rid of me? Planning to use your sorcery to mess with my food?”
One Eye’s face turned a ghostly gray. Bai Rui remained silent, offering no immediate reaction.
“I’ve spent years living with my head on the line on this ship. I’ve killed many, and I’ve seen many who wanted to get rid of me. None of them succeeded.”
Jayne grabbed the back of Bai Rui’s head, roughly pulling him close. “Little darling, I can tell you for a fact: your sorcery is useless against me. I cannot be killed by magic. Oh, right, my skin was specially reinforced by a potion from the Sorcerer Emperor himself. If you don’t believe me, try using a dagger.”
A-Wu, standing nearby: “Hmm?”
But Captain Jayne naturally didn’t care about the reaction of a mere servant. He laughed triumphantly.
“You’ve probably never seen an immortal in your life, have you? We Annamese have blackened teeth and have prayed, so magic attacks are useless. As for physical attacks, you can’t break through my armored skin. I am a unique existence in this world.”
“Little beauty, do you know the Sorcerer Emperor?”
Bai Rui: “…”
Not only did he know him, but if he didn’t run now, he’d end up as the Sorcerer Empress.
Jayne bared his teeth in a cruel smile. “His Majesty the Sorcerer Emperor bestowed the potion upon me. Do you understand what that means? This isn’t an honor just anyone gets. I know the Sorcerer Emperor!”
A heavy silence fell over the room. After a long moment, A-Wu, draped in his cloak, actually reached out to scratch his head.
He thought to himself: I know you?
Bai Rui stared at Jayne from inches away, a trace of undetectable pity in his eyes.
“The Evil God Sorcerer Emperor… I’ve never seen him. How terrifying~”
