- Too Late to Regret, She’s Now With the Big Boss
- Chapter 27 - Bullet Comments Shatter Worldviews
“Third Master? Never heard of him? Are people who don’t know Third Master not allowed in?” Ding Fan asked coldly.
His expression remained impassive as he stared at the man in the crowd, one moment laughing as if it cost nothing, the next scowling like he wanted to stab someone.
Keeping Third Master in his line of sight was his duty. He had trained and studied alongside Third Master and Bai Lang since childhood, Bai Lang in the light, him in the shadows.
He usually stayed hidden, either in a car or lurking in the background, rarely appearing openly by Third Master Lu’s side.
But three days ago, after Third Master suddenly got married, he was assigned to protect the master and his wife up close.
Since Third Master wanted to accompany his wife, Bai Lang had to step away to handle many of the master’s responsibilities. Thus, Ding Fan had to step out of the shadows.
“May I ask your name, sir? If you don’t know Third Master, why are you with Assistant Bai?” Xiao Feng asked politely, eyeing the expensive gift box in his hand.
“Just call me Ding. Saw him carrying too much, so I helped out. Does everyone get interrogated?” Ding Fan replied with a dark expression.
He took the offered glass of red wine, swirling it in his hand. He couldn’t drink, but at least he could savor the aroma.
“Not at all. Guests are welcome. Please make yourself at home, I have other matters to attend to.” Xiao Feng spoke courteously but mentally cursed his luck.
He quickly searched his memory for any wealthy families with the surname Ding, nothing. So, he carried the gift and sidled up to Bai Lang instead.
Damn it, I shouldn’t have taken that gift from Ding Fan!
“Fine wine. No surprise, given it’s a joint banquet hosted by the Song and Ye families,” Bai Lang murmured to Ding Fan, taking a sip with a teasing smirk.
Both men were tall, handsome, and effortlessly eye-catching. Soon, a group of women forcibly separated them.
Ding Fan couldn’t let Lu Jingchen and Ye Qianqian out of his sight. A single icy glare from him sent the giggling socialites flocking to the gentler Bai Lang instead.
“Assistant Bai, please come upstairs,” Song Yuntao and Ye Qianqian’s second brother, who had just arrived, flanked him as they escorted him to the second floor.
The young women watched Bai Lang’s retreating figure before chattering excitedly and swarming toward Ye Qianqian.
…
The Ye family often used the first and second floors for banquets, the first floor for ordinary guests, the second for VIPs.
Important guests were immediately ushered upstairs upon arrival.
Song Yuntao, who was supposed to receive Third Master Lu, failed to recognize him and was about to call security when he suddenly spotted Bai Lang.
Instantly fawning, Song Yuntao hurried to greet Bai Lang and invited him upstairs, planning to deal with the “pretty boy” later.
Ye Qianqian was someone both Song Yuntao and Xiao Feng looked down on, so she and her husband weren’t deemed worthy of the second floor.
Upstairs, the high-status guests eagerly awaited Third Master Lu. When they saw Bai Lang, they swarmed around him like bees.
Bai Lang skillfully deflected their questions, only revealing that Third Master had already arrived at the Ye residence though he hadn’t noticed where he’d gone.
Bai Lang had long been Third Master Lu’s spokesperson, with the authority to make decisions on many matters.
Unlike the volatile Third Master, who might stab someone at the slightest provocation, Bai Lang was known for his calm demeanor.
Everyone in Rongcheng’s upper circles knew that Bai Lang and Third Master never separated at events. Seeing Bai Lang meant Third Master was nearby.
Upstairs, the guests chatted merrily.
Downstairs, Lu Jingchen watched the swarm of men and women buzzing around him and his wife like flies.
A cold glint flashed in his dark eyes, his lips curling in disdain. But when he saw Ye Qianqian happily eating, he suppressed his discomfort.
He dutifully shielded her, fetching food and drinks like an attentive attendant. Despite his fastidious nature, he even wiped her mouth for her.
He didn’t care whether he was given preferential treatment, wherever his wife was, he would be there. His wife was too beautiful, and he feared others might covet her.
The guests in the first-floor hall might not be of high status, but that didn’t mean they wouldn’t dare to cause trouble or bully others.
Yet, no one dared to provoke Ye Qianqian and Lu Jingchen, they were too striking to the eye and carried an air of being untouchable.
Those bold enough to pick a fight with Ye Qianqian were all on the second floor, so she ate and drank in peace.
Originally, she hadn’t planned to go upstairs, but the barrage of bullet comments flashing before her eyes shattered her worldview.
[Ding Fan is so impressive! Xiao Feng arranged for five groups of people to spike the supporting female character’s drink, but not a single one succeeded.]
[Xiao Feng is so furious he’s about to step in and flirt with her himself. Can’t wait to see the big boss tear him apart!]
[OMG! Is the female lead actually a scheming green tea b*tch? She already knows from her birth mother that she’s Ye Dad’s biological daughter, yet she’s still flirting with Ye Big Brother!]
[The male lead is hiding by the floor-to-ceiling window in the side hall, secretly eyeing the female antagonist, unaware that his wife is next door playing an indescribable game with Ye Big Brother.]
Ye Qianqian: Where’s my knife? That scumbag still dares to lust after me?
“Wife, is the food not to your liking?” Lu Jingchen asked worriedly when he noticed her delicate brows furrowing slightly.
“I’m full. Hubby, do you want to rest in my room for a bit?” Ye Qianqian probed.
“If you’re tired, let’s go home.”
“I’m not tired. Actually, I want to go laugh at Ye Qingyan.” Seeing that Lu Jingchen seemed reluctant to stay at the Ye residence, almost as if he had an aversion to the place, she decided to be honest. Whether they went back to the room or not wasn’t important; what mattered was exposing Ye Qingyan’s relationship with her eldest brother.
“Wherever my wife wants to go is fine,” Lu Jingchen said dotingly.
“Really? If I cause trouble, will you clean up the mess for me?”
“Of course. As long as you’re happy.” His promise was firm.
After years of abuse from his own mother, his heart was steeped in darkness. His woman had been switched at birth and raised in hardship.
He only knew she had endured a tough life in the countryside but never cowered yet he never imagined she would become timid after returning to the Ye family, letting anyone walk all over her.
That morning, the Ye family had bombarded them with calls. Now, seeing how things were, he felt they were a perfect match, two souls drenched in bitterness.
Now that she had married him, he would stand by her in every situation, shield her from consequences if she made mistakes. She should settle every grievance, no matter how small.
Let everyone know she wasn’t to be trifled with.
But what he didn’t know was that the reason Ye Qianqian had become timid and compromising was because she didn’t want to drift through the world alone.
Ye Qianqian had a peculiar fate, when alone, she was exceptionally unlucky, to the point where even drinking water could choke her.
After returning to the Ye family, though constantly nitpicked and scorned, the family’s immense wealth shielded her from misfortune.
She thought it was great, wealthy, beautiful, no longer worrying about tripping over flat ground.
“Hubby is the best.” The couple exchanged a smile, hand in hand as they headed to the second floor, the crowd around them following along.
…
At the Second Floor, Side Hall.
Ye Big Brother and his adopted sister had just finished a full minute of passionate French kissing. Holding her soft body, he felt his throat go dry again.
Her cheeks were flushed a delicate pink, her eyes glistening with moisture, tender as a rose blooming at dawn.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
Ye Big Brother felt his heartbeat grow increasingly erratic, acutely aware of the surge of wild thoughts flooding his mind in that instant.
His Adam’s apple bobbed as his gaze grew increasingly dark and unfathomable, fixed on those crimson lips. Yet he pulled out a cigarette and tossed it lightly in the air.
Soon, he lit the cigarette and took a slow drag. Wisps of white smoke curled around him, blurring his strikingly handsome features.
Ye Qingyan watched the man whose flushed face she had teased into a feverish state, her pupils gradually darkening with a feral intensity, already shadowed by something brooding and unhinged.
“Brother~~ Yanyan is willing to give herself to you~~”
