To the Man Destined to Kill Me - Chapter 86
As soon as Noah returned to the hotel, he woke up Peter, who was sleeping. Peter, still full of sleep, yawned and sat up.
“Did something happen?”
Soon, he noticed that Noah’s face was unusually flushed and immediately became tense.
Noah covered his mouth with a trembling hand. A faint smile was on his lips, like an adventurer ready to jump into an unknown world.
It looked like he was worried he might end up disappointed by what he would face, but also full of hope for the coming adventure.
“Peter, Peter.”
“Yes, I’m here.”
“Scarlett is alive.”
“…What?”
“Scarlett is alive.”
“Your Majesty. What do you mean…?”
“I got information that she’s alive. Find her. Where she is, how her health is, why they made it look like she was dead… and find out exactly how the funeral of someone who isn’t dead was arranged.”
Peter furrowed his brows and carefully went over Noah’s words. When he found and put on his glasses, he could clearly see Noah, who looked lost and unsure.
“Scarlett is alive. She’s alive! …Damn it! I have to go to the White mansion right now.”
As Noah tried to rush out of the hotel, Peter quickly grabbed him.
“Please calm down. I’ll look into it right now. I’ll dig up something by morning, no matter what.”
Peter could feel Noah’s body trembling. A man who had crossed countless deadly lines was now shaking like a bird soaked in rain.
“Where did you hear that?”
“I heard Isaac Brown, Scarlett’s nephew, talking. He said, ‘She’s not in good health, but she’s alive.'”
“Oh… Let’s get some sleep first.”
Peter said that, but he knew very well that Noah could not possibly calm down in a situation like this.
Though he had never met Scarlett, Peter knew very well what she meant to Noah.
She was like Noah’s faith.
Just by existing, she made him feel like a sinner, yet he could not reject her, just as one cannot reject their god.
At the same time, she tested her follower Noah, making her a source of deep hatred too.
She made him curse her for causing him so much pain, but he could never turn away from her. That was Scarlett White.
“First, calm yourself. I’ll find out everything and come back.”
As he said, Peter quickly gathered his people and rushed out.
Noah sat down and anxiously bit his nails until the night grew deep and the sun rose from the horizon.
When he couldn’t sit still anymore, he got up and paced back and forth across the room.
He kept inhaling and exhaling deeply. When he placed his hand over his chest, he could feel his heart pounding hard.
“Scarlett… Scarlett…”
Before he knew it, the sun had risen.
Just as the dawn light seeped through the curtains and shadows formed on Noah’s face, Peter appeared with a tired face.
“What did you find?”
“First, please know that it was terribly hard to get information. Everything was tightly controlled by the Cravitz side.”
“Okay, okay. Just tell me the important part. Where is Scarlett?”
“Slowly… Please calm down first.”
Noah quickly took deep breaths, and Peter shook his head and began his report.
“The funeral. The funeral at the nearby cathedral on that day was not for Miss White.”
“What?”
“It was for a businessman very close to the White family who died in an accident. I confirmed the death report. The article in the Norton newspaper about Scarlett White’s death and funeral was clearly false.”
Peter continued reporting quickly.
“She hasn’t appeared in public for six years, and because the newspaper report was never corrected, everyone just believed she was dead. The White family also didn’t bother to explain. But she is… yes, she is definitely alive.”
Noah’s purple eyes trembled finely. Seeing Noah’s moist eyes, Peter turned his gaze back to the papers.
“There’s evidence that Marie, a maid who used to serve beside her, has been traveling back and forth to the southern region. She claims it’s to care for her sick sister, Cathy Warrington, but it’s clear they are not sisters.”
Noah checked the document Peter handed over.
[Cathy Warrington.
Early twenties, red hair, gray eyes. No identification found; likely a false name.]
“Ah…”
A sound escaped from Noah’s lips.
He laughed lowly like a madman. The sound resembled the cry of a sad, wounded beast.
‘She’s alive.’
She’s sick, but alive. That alone was enough.
She is alive.
The woman he loved to the point of hatred…
‘Scarlett. Do you know? I even love the hatred I feel toward you.’
“Find the doctor. I need to know about her condition.”
“If we dig any further, the Cravitz side will notice. So, about that…”
“What is it?”
“There will be a ball hosted by the White family soon. How about confirming it directly there?”
“When?”
“In four days.”
“Four days… I have to wait four days. I’ll borrow your face and cast an illusion spell over it.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
“Also, gather the guest and merchant list visiting the White estate. We must find another way to enter too.”
“I’ll prepare the list by this afternoon.”
“Good.”
“And here’s today’s newspaper.”
Noah checked the newspaper Peter handed him. A crooked smile spread across his lips.
There was an article in the Norton newspaper about Susan White’s money laundering. All of it was information Noah had gathered and reported.
“This is just the beginning.”
Even though he hadn’t slept at all, he felt full of energy for official duties.
What filled him was none other than pure joy.
“Find out where the leak came from.”
Susan was someone well-trained in handling such things.
She calmly organized the situation and took command to wrap things up quickly.
“Apologize but don’t admit properly. Say something like, ‘Regardless of the truth, we’re sorry for causing trouble.’ Also, find out if the Norton Daily is preparing a follow-up article.”
After the chaotic breakfast meeting, Susan drank cold water while fuming.
Scarlett gently tried to calm Susan down.
“Should I announce that I’m alive? If I do that, your article will be buried.”
“I don’t want to use you like that.”
Scarlett had said it lightly to ease the mood, knowing Susan would refuse.
Actually, it was Scarlett who wanted to keep living like this.
Now that Noah had returned to Wifland as Emperor of Natalia, she wanted to stay ‘dead’ to avoid causing unnecessary trouble.
Susan called to a servant.
“Maggie, bring more cold water.”
“I’ll get it. You’re busy preparing for the ball.”
Scarlett quickly grabbed the water pitcher and left the dining room.
While filling a pitcher in the kitchen, Scarlett saw Isaac coming in through a back window. She immediately left the pitcher and ran to him.
As Isaac stepped inside, he closed his eyes tightly at the shadow looming over him, but let out a sigh of relief when he heard his aunt’s voice.
“Isaac Brown. What have you been doing all night?”
“Auntie, please lower your voice.”
“Sniff. Have you been drinking?”
“No way. Not at all.”
“Really? I can smell alcohol on you.”
“Uh… I didn’t drink much. Just a little… very little…”
“You’re only fifteen. Isn’t it enough that you got caught stealing Scott’s 35-year-old cognac last time?”
“It wasn’t cognac this time.”
“Whatever it was.”
“Where’s Mom?”
“She’s in a really bad mood. If she catches you like this, you’ll be in big trouble.”
“Ah…”
At Isaac’s sigh, Scarlett clicked her tongue. Isaac grabbed her arm and begged.
“You’ll pretend you didn’t see me, right?”
“Well. If you keep this up, I won’t be able to cover for you anymore. And you shouldn’t go around without a guard.”
“Come on. Why would I need a guard?”
“You never know when someone might try to kidnap you.”
“I’m fine. I’m not going to get kidnapped like you.”
At his careless answer, Scarlett responded with a fierce face.
“Yeah, I thought that too. ‘Who would dare kidnap a White?’ But when I opened my eyes, I was already kidnapped, and all I could do was take medicine like Aaron taught me.”
“Auntie…”
“Anyway, even if you don’t study, always have a guard with you. It’s for your own good.”
“Whatever. If they kidnap me, they’ll regret it.”
“Isaac!”
Isaac shook his head, not wanting to think anymore, and went upstairs. He needed to calm his upset stomach first.
“Sigh.”
Scarlett pressed her fingers under her eyes. Her chest felt so tight that she couldn’t help but sigh.
When Noah returned to Wifland, no one was more troubled than she was.
And now Isaac was a mess, and Noah…
“No.”
She had to cut ties with Noah completely.
Nothing good would come from getting involved with him again.
“But why do I feel so anxious…”
Just knowing he existed under the same sky made her heart tremble, like a moth flapping its wings in fire.
“I must hurry the engagement.”
The engagement would be a small event with only family, so no rumors would spread.
She wished for a complete farewell from Noah. She didn’t want her son to be caught up in Noah’s affairs.
Teddy—Theodore in Wifland speech—was White’s child.
Forever.
