To the Man Destined to Kill Me - Chapter 46
“Do you even know what you’re saying?”
Scarlett cut off Noah’s pleading with a cold voice.
“I know.”
“You say you like me.”
She clearly knew what “like” meant, but she decided to pretend to misunderstand. She felt uncomfortable being seen as a woman, and it made it easier for her to play with him.
“You have feelings for a half-sibling you haven’t even known for a year. You really must not be a White.”
“What…”
“The White family is known for being rough. They’re fierce like wild animals and know no mercy. You’re definitely a half-White. You must have taken after your mother strongly.”
“I don’t care if I’m a half-blood or even less. I just want you to be healthy.”
“That’s something that will never happen. Survive and get revenge? What nonsense.”
If Noah were to take revenge, and if the feelings burning in his eyes were what she thought they were, then her death would be the real revenge. She would leave him the despair of having caused the death of someone he loved.
“I’m going to die.”
“Scarlett, please don’t say that. I’m begging you…”
“I’m just telling the truth. Come here, Noah. Give me your arm for a pillow. If I act spoiled with Scott, he’ll just worry more.”
When Noah hesitated, Scarlett added,
“If I’m really your beloved sister, come lie here.”
What would it feel like to have an unreachable love so close at your feet? Scarlett smiled inwardly at Noah’s face twisting in pain.
“…Okay…”
A look of misery flashed across Noah’s face. He bit his lower lip, knowing he could never be a man to her.
But he couldn’t turn away from her, pitiful as she was. Noah squeezed himself beside her.
As he offered his arm, Scarlett rested her head on it without hesitation. Scarlett’s hair brushed Noah’s nose, making his big body stiffen.
She was lying right next to him. Just that fact made Noah’s heart race like it would burst. Scarlett sighed carelessly by his side.
“I miss John. When I was really little, he used to let me use his arm like this.”
“What about the others? Was it only Mr. John?”
“Susan told me stories about our mother, and Aaron sang lullabies. Andy and I had pillow fights.”
“What about Mr. Scott?”
“Scott… didn’t like me.”
“That man?”
“He thought he lost our mother because of me. And he was right. That’s why I hated myself. …This is depressing. Let’s stop talking about it.”
You did nothing wrong. Why do you feel sad about your existence? Maybe you, like me, carry guilt. If that’s true, I want to wash your pain away with my tears.
“Whatever happens, Scarlett, thank you for being born.”
For a moment, Scarlett’s breath stopped. She inhaled sharply, repeating his words in her mind.
Thank you for being born…
She had heard people say she was precious, but this was the first time someone praised her just for being born.
Noah’s words weren’t simple. Scarlett felt her heart beating wildly. With each beat, something warm spread through her body. Her breath caught, and her chest ached with emotion.
She hated the feeling spreading inside her. She disliked the emotions growing within. She shouldn’t feel this way.
So she tried to fall asleep helplessly. Sleep was the perfect escape for her.
Maybe because her strength was drained, even with Noah lying right next to her, she quickly lost consciousness.
After Scarlett fell asleep, Noah gently stroked her hair. Her soft curls brushed against his fingertips.
He could feel her quiet breathing. Scarlett was in his arms. He couldn’t believe it.
Scarlett.
He quietly whispered her name.
“Scarlett… Carly, Carly…”
Carly. My Carly, my Scarlett. Scarlett White.
We are definitely not siblings. Otherwise, I couldn’t love you like this.
But he was powerless. He had nothing, and he couldn’t do anything. Even his love had to be hidden. He was not a rightful person.
I need to meet Victor Lebedev. To dig into my birth, I have to bear my mother’s secrets.
Even if it meant diving into hell, he would do it if he could be proud of his feelings for even one day.
At that moment—
“Maybe she’s not asleep yet. You should have come a little earlier.”
“I canceled my business trip and had to clean up the mess. I hope she likes this gift.”
Aaron and Scott’s voices came from the hallway. Noah carefully pulled his arm out from under Scarlett. She didn’t react; she was deeply asleep.
“Good night.”
He brushed Scarlett’s hair one last time and retraced his steps out.
When he left the villa and reached the roadside nearby, Noah blushed, thinking of Scarlett’s soft breathing.
He felt filthy for thinking of her that way. At the same time, the thought of Scarlett stopping her breath made his chest tighten painfully.
“No.”
He couldn’t lose her. He ran along the roadside and screamed to let out his overflowing emotions.
“Ahhh!”
Without stopping, Noah jumped into the cold creek beside the road.
The moon reflected in the waves was so beautiful, yet Scarlett was trapped in the pain of wanting to give up on life. That absurdity drove him into despair, over and over again.
That night, when even hope was hidden by darkness, that was the only thing he could do.
Scarlett, despite Noah’s worries, needed three more days before fully recovering from her fever.
As soon as she got up, she busily prepared for the charity party. Time flew, and the party was scheduled for that afternoon.
“Noah, look carefully. Which color do you think suits me better?”
“I don’t know. Both are pretty.”
“Look properly, I said.”
Noah was really troubled. To him, pink-orange and orange-pink looked exactly the same. But Scarlett was torturing him, asking which one matched her lips better.
“Think about my eye color, hair color, and dress color too.”
“Um…”
Honestly, they’re the same. You’ll look pretty no matter what.
But if he said that out loud, Scarlett would scold him for brushing her off.
“Since your dress is dark navy, maybe the redder one is better?”
“That might be too much. And Susan often wears red. It suits her so well, I don’t want to be compared. Marie! I’ve decided. I’ll go with this color.”
Only after Scarlett disappeared into her room could Noah finally breathe.
He sat on the living room sofa and continued reading his book, but of course, he couldn’t focus. Scarlett was getting all dressed up for Wilhelm.
“If we match dress codes, will we look like a couple?”
“What if you do? You two suit each other so well.”
“What if Wilhelm doesn’t like it? What if he feels awkward? What do I do? There’s not much time left!”
Noah’s lips twisted. His heart boiled with jealousy. He sharpened his feelings toward Wilhelm because Scarlett was showing interest in him. And also—
“A few days ago when he visited, I looked terrible because I hadn’t even washed. I can’t show him a mess again.”
“You’re pretty enough without anything on. Miss, you don’t even know how beautiful you are, do you?”
“I wish the whole world thought that. I’m nervous. It’s been so long since I went to a party.”
“Will you be okay? You usually avoid crowded places.”
“If I meet another creep like last time, I’ll just make them pity me. I’m sick, but not stupid.”
“Calm down. Nothing bad will happen.”
“It’ll be the same. They’ll gossip about me. They’ll say I must be crazy for hanging out with a bastard like Noah.”
“Miss, don’t frown.”
While Scarlett was finishing her makeup, the living room door opened and Wilhelm entered. He was supposed to escort her today.
In his formal suit, Wilhelm looked so handsome there were no other words for it. He was elegant, noble, and dazzling. Noah, in comparison, seemed shabby.
“Hello. Where’s Scarlett?”
“She’ll be out soon.”
It made Noah angry that she had asked him silly questions just to look good for a guy like that.
Knowing he wasn’t in her heart for sure, Noah clenched his teeth and tried hard to ignore Wilhelm.
At that moment, footsteps echoed from the hallway. Both Noah and Wilhelm stood up to greet her. The door opened, and Scarlett appeared.
“Wow…”
Wilhelm let out a gasp. Noah stood frozen with his mouth open.
Scarlett, dressed up with makeup and a dress, was so beautiful it trapped your eyes and stole your heart.
Her dazzling features shone even brighter with makeup, looking almost magical.
“Bravo!”
Wilhelm whistled and said with a smile,
“I just realized I’m lucky to be escorting such a beautiful lady.”
“Good thing you realized now.”
“Shall we go, Princess Scarlett?”
“Princess? Save the Hiberk formalities.”
Scarlett said, fixing Wilhelm’s tie. Wilhelm’s eyes were glued to her as she adjusted it.
The subtle fluttering feelings and affection were clear. Noah clenched his fists. His jaw tightened.
He wanted to shout at Scarlett — Why are you doing this to me? Don’t test me, don’t provoke me…
“All done.”
“Thank you.”
Wilhelm quickly hid his feelings and elegantly offered his hand. Scarlett smiled lightly and placed her hand in his.
Why wasn’t she wearing gloves?
Noah bit the inside of his cheek as he watched their hands join. Scarlett, who glanced at Noah’s face, lifted the corner of her mouth slightly.
“I’ll be back.”
And so, Scarlett left proudly, riding the carriage with Wilhelm. The carriage became a small dot in the distance and disappeared.
Noah went straight to the study. He couldn’t contain his emotions anymore.
The study materials Scarlett had thrown on the desk were scattered. Without hesitation, Noah threw them into the fireplace.
He felt betrayed by Scarlett — smiling shyly at Wilhelm’s compliments, casually grabbing his hand, putting on makeup just to impress him, even when she hadn’t fully recovered yet…
Don’t smile like that, Scarlett.
I want you to cry and laugh because of me. Just like I cry and laugh because of you.
I want you to find joy in my existence, and despair over us being siblings, just like I do.
I want to be your pain and happiness…
