Three Sentences That Made My Ex-Wife Spit Blood - Chapter 64
In the middle of the night, Yan Qinglan was awakened by the soft sound of a baby crying. Only then did she realize she had fallen asleep. In her hand, she was still holding the thumb ring.
“Sister Qing, is our little sweetheart crying?” The woman beside her, who had carried the baby for ten months, was highly sensitive to her child’s needs.
Even though the baby was in another room, the faint sounds had stirred her from sleep.
“I’ll go check. You keep resting,” Yan Qinglan said, tucking the ring away. She planned to talk to Wen Huaxi about it in the morning.
She leaned over to kiss Wen Huaxi gently, then got up and walked to the nursery.
The night nurse had already been woken up.
“What’s wrong with her?” Yan Qinglan approached the cradle and looked at the softly fussing Wen Qingxun.
It didn’t seem like she was hungry or needed a diaper change.
“She might just be missing her mom,” the nurse said as she picked up the baby and handed her to Yan Qinglan.
“Your little one is honestly the most perceptive baby I’ve ever met. Most babies this age don’t understand speech, but she really seems to.”
The nurse was clearly impressed. Earlier that evening, while putting Wen Qingxun to sleep, it had felt as though the baby genuinely understood what she was saying, and she calmed down instead of crying more.
“It’s the middle of the night,” Yan Qinglan said while gently patting Wen Qingxun’s back. “Your mommy is sleeping. She went through a lot giving birth to you today, so let her get some rest.”
Wen Qingxun gave a soft suck on Yan Qinglan’s finger, then let go and pouted, but didn’t cry again.
It really felt like she could understand.
“She’ll come see you first thing in the morning. Be good,” Yan Qinglan said thoughtfully, trying to confirm her guess. “Do you understand what we’re saying?”
Wen Qingxun had already quieted down. After hearing Yan Qinglan’s question, she squirmed slightly, turned her body, and showed her back as if giving a silent, proud response.
Yan Qinglan gave a wry smile. What a temper. It seemed she would really have two little divas to care for in the future.
Once Wen Qingxun had fallen back asleep, Yan Qinglan went to the next room to retrieve the paternity test results that had been done after the baby was born.
As expected, there were no surprises. Wen Qingxun was indeed her biological child and shared half of her DNA.
Looking at the results, Yan Qinglan felt even more confident about where the baby had come from.
In this lifetime, she had never marked Wen Huaxi.
Wen Huaxi had also never mentioned any strange dreams about being marked.
That left only one possible explanation for Wen Qingxun’s existence.
She had truly been reborn.
This was the same child who had died in the car crash alongside Wen Huaxi in their previous life.
Yan Qinglan’s breathing became slightly rapid.
If Wen Qingxun had come back through reincarnation, then what about Wen Huaxi?
Those vague memories and uncanny moments that could be explained as either coincidences or something more—what were they really?
If Wen Huaxi had also been reborn, did she remember her past life? Or was she slowly starting to recall things like Yan Qinglan had?
Yan Qinglan’s fingers brushed over the thumb ring that had once belonged to Yan Mingzhu.
Could that ring have played a role in Wen Qingxun’s rebirth?
Lying back in bed, Yan Qinglan found herself unable to sleep again.
In her dreams, Wen Huaxi subconsciously moved closer to her favorite source of warmth and comfort. Almost instinctively, she snuggled into Yan Qinglan’s arms like it was second nature.
Yan Qinglan pulled her into a gentle embrace and sighed quietly.
Whether Wen Huaxi had been reborn or not, she would still love her.
She only hoped that, if Wen Huaxi ever remembered the truth—that she had been neglected by Yan Qinglan in their past life—she wouldn’t be too hurt or angry.
Out of a sense of uncertainty, Yan Qinglan decided to keep quiet for now. She didn’t mention the ring or the possibility of rebirth to Wen Huaxi, who was still in her postpartum recovery.
She stayed by Wen Huaxi’s side, helping her regain her strength and adjust to the physical discomforts after childbirth. Together, they doted on their baby girl.
About a month later, Wen Huaxi had almost fully recovered. She was preparing to return to school to finish her studies. At the same time, she was planning to terminate her contract with the entertainment company and open her own studio.
During the baby’s one-month celebration, Yan Mingzhu was finally allowed to leave the guest house where Yan Qinglan had arranged for her to stay. She came to see her granddaughter in person.
The baby, now one month old, had opened her eyes and gained some weight. Her once-wrinkled face was now plump and full of baby fat.
Wen Huaxi was completely smitten by her daughter’s cuteness and carried her around all day, unable to put her down.
Wen Qingxun was also extremely attached to her mother. If she didn’t see Wen Huaxi for just five minutes, she would start fussing and whimpering.
At that moment, Wen Huaxi was busy entertaining guests. Yan Qinglan held Wen Qingxun in her arms, counting the seconds.
Exactly five minutes later, Wen Qingxun’s lips began to tremble. She was about to cry.
“Oh no, what’s wrong with my granddaughter?” Yan Mingzhu’s heart ached when she saw the baby’s teary eyes.
“She’s spoiled. She just misses her mom,” Yan Qinglan said, skillfully patting the baby’s back and placing a pacifier in her mouth.
Wen Qingxun gave her a pitiful, teary-eyed look, her round eyes filled with confusion.
“She’s just a clingy little cutie. Be gentler with her. She’s your and Xiaoxi’s daughter,” Yan Mingzhu scolded, clearly disapproving of Yan Qinglan’s stricter parenting. She took Wen Qingxun into her arms and began cooing softly to soothe her.
“Mom, come on. Don’t spoil her too much. Both Xiaoxi and I have work. She’s going back to school in a few days. She can’t take the baby with her, so Wen Qingxun needs to get used to it,” Yan Qinglan said, rubbing her temples.
There was definitely something about grandparents and their indulgence. From the look in Yan Mingzhu’s eyes, she would probably give Wen Qingxun the stars and the moon if asked.
“Do you even know what school is?” Yan Qinglan bent down slightly to speak directly to her daughter, looking into her startled expression.
“She’s just a baby. What could she possibly understand? What kind of mother are you? She’s still supposed to call you mommy,” Yan Mingzhu muttered.
If her hands weren’t full holding the baby, she might have smacked Yan Qinglan right then and there.
Wen Qingxun only pouted and pushed the pacifier out of her mouth with her tongue.
Clearly, she had no idea what school meant.
As far back as she could remember, her wonderful mother had already left school life behind. She was off filming, sketching designs, and building her career.
“School is a place where you learn new things. You’ll go there one day too. When that time comes, your mommy and I won’t be able to stay by your side,” Yan Qinglan explained as gently as she could.
Three seconds later, Wen Qingxun’s little face was covered in tears. She burst into loud sobs.
Yan Mingzhu was left speechless. Her entire view of the world had just been shaken.
She had assumed Yan Qinglan was simply projecting her own expectations onto the child, pretending that the baby understood.
But based on what she just saw, Wen Qingxun genuinely understood what they were saying.
Hearing the crying, Wen Huaxi quickly came over and took the baby from Yan Qinglan, giving her a chance to return to the guests.
But this time, no matter how much she hugged, kissed, praised, or offered Wen Qingxun her favorite toy, the baby just wouldn’t stop crying.
“What did Sister Qing say to her?” Wen Huaxi asked anxiously. Wen Qingxun had never cried for this long before.
Yan Mingzhu, after hearing that, finally managed to piece her worldview back together.
“She said you’re going back to school and won’t be able to stay with little sweetheart. And that little sweetheart will also have to go to school, and when that time comes, neither of you will be there with her.”
Wen Qingxun whimpered twice after hearing this and cried even harder.
Wen Huaxi didn’t know whether to laugh or sigh. Sister Qing was clearly using the fact that the baby could understand words, but not fully grasp their meaning, to scare her.
“My sweet girl, it’s not that Mommy or Mama don’t want you, and you’re not leaving us either. But we need to go earn money, for food, clothes, and toys. Whether it’s school or work, it’s all so we can have a better life as a family. You don’t want to go hungry, do you?”
Wen Qingxun’s sobs grew quieter, though her face still looked hurt and pitiful.
“You’ll go to school one day too, and that’s for your own future. Besides, school goes by fast. You won’t see us for maybe eight or nine hours, but you’ll meet lots of kids your age and some very sweet teachers.”
Yan Mingzhu watched as her daughter-in-law calmly and fluently communicated with her granddaughter, trying hard to patch up her sense of reality.
At last, Wen Qingxun calmed down.
After a while, she tilted her head at Yan Mingzhu and gave a cheerful little smile.
“This is your grandma, your Mama’s mom,” Wen Huaxi said warmly as she handed the baby to Yan Mingzhu.
“Mom, you can talk to her. She understands.”
And so, slightly confused but willing, Yan Mingzhu began chatting with her granddaughter.
Once all the guests had arrived, the formal parts of the one-month celebration began.
When it came time to press the baby’s handprints and footprints into clay, Wen Qingxun frowned deeply at the two blobs of mud, clearly reluctant.
Since their baby could communicate, they couldn’t just grab her hand and press it down like any other child.
But she couldn’t speak either. Wen Huaxi looked over at Yan Qinglan, silently asking for help.
Yan Qinglan thought for a moment, then leaned down to whisper to Wen Qingxun.
“It’s not dirty. After this, we’ll go take a bath. Your mommy really wants to keep this as a memory. Don’t make her wait too long, okay?”
Wen Qingxun squeezed her eyes shut, looking as though she had accepted her fate like a tiny martyr.
Wen Huaxi couldn’t help but laugh. She quickly helped the baby press her hand and foot into the clay.
When the guests finally sat down to eat, Wen Huaxi and Yan Qinglan went off together to give their little sweetheart a bath.
“She’s a neat freak, isn’t she?” Wen Huaxi suddenly realized.
“Seems like it,” Yan Qinglan replied. She remembered a dream where a younger version of Wen Qingxun had almost bitten her. But when she told her it was dirty, the little one had immediately stopped. That must have come from her side, not Wen Huaxi.
“She’s so funny. Little sweetheart, do you hate getting your hands dirty?” Wen Huaxi rubbed her daughter’s cheeks affectionately.
Wen Qingxun pretended to sleep, clearly not interested in engaging.
“She’s not really mad, is she? Is it even possible for a baby this small to get mad?” Wen Huaxi felt like she had just discovered something fascinating. She stared at Wen Qingxun and gave her a playful squish.
Wen Qingxun had no choice but to protest with loud cries. She couldn’t crawl yet, and crying was the only way she could express her frustration.
“Looks like she is,” Yan Qinglan said, expertly washing her daughter while observing her little face carefully.
Upon hearing that, Wen Qingxun curled her lips in frustration.
She just couldn’t move or speak yet, but she could definitely get mad. And right now, she was very angry.
Unfortunately, being angry didn’t help. She still had to endure her mommy’s teasing and her mama’s indifference.
She made up her mind to pretend to be asleep all afternoon and ignore both of her mischievous moms.
After a quick bath, they returned to the banquet hall.
Their table was filled with close friends and family. Everyone wanted a turn holding Wen Qingxun.
And just like that, Wen Qingxun’s act fell apart. She couldn’t resist the beautiful, unfamiliar young women holding her. She smiled and babbled excitedly.
“Your baby is so well-behaved. Honestly, she’s the most well-behaved baby I’ve ever seen,” Du Jiayan said while watching Wen Sui Xue hold little sweetheart.
To her surprise, Wen Qingxun turned to look at her, eyes shining brightly.
Her mommy only praised her while calming her down. Her mama didn’t even do that. All she ever did was bribe or threaten her.
But this big sister was so nice. She complimented her for no reason. Wen Qingxun immediately wanted to play with her.
“She smiled at me. Oh, she’s really just too adorable,” Du Jiayan said, completely unaware that her compliment had instantly earned the baby’s loyalty. She reached out to play with her.
Wen Qingxun let out an unhappy cry.
Why did everyone like to pinch her cheeks? Was it just because she couldn’t move?
If she could speak, she would say something that would definitely get nods of agreement from everyone around her.
Yes, they were clearly bullying her just because she was a baby and couldn’t fight back.
“Miss Wen, you’ve been holding her for five minutes. Isn’t it someone else’s turn?” Lu Tong called out from the other side, growing impatient.
She had only seen her best friend’s baby once after she was born.
She hadn’t expected her to become this soft and adorable just one month later. Her chubby cheeks and tiny hands and feet were just too cute.
“My sister said each person gets ten minutes, but since your words are so sweet, go ahead,” Wen Sui Xue said with a smile as she handed the baby over to Lu Tong.
Ever since getting married, Wen Huaxi hadn’t called her “Sister” in a long time.
“Our baby is really a little heart-stealer,” Wen Huaxi said, finally having a moment to relax. She watched as little sweetheart sat in the center of attention, adored by everyone.
“She’s cute, quiet, and doesn’t fuss. Basically, the perfect toy,” Yan Qinglan added, then paused.
“I mean, the perfect baby.” She had let her true thoughts slip for a moment.
Suddenly, she realized that raising this baby might be a lot more fun than expected.
