Three Sentences That Made My Ex-Wife Spit Blood - Chapter 29
Seeing Xiaoxi’s stunned expression, Yan Qinglan didn’t say a word.
She instinctively avoided asking Xiaoxi who the baby’s father was.
She was afraid the answer would break her heart.
What if the child really belonged to someone else? Should she let Xiaoxi go? Should they finally end things with a divorce?
But what about the feelings she couldn’t let go of? And the strange memories that haunted her?
Yan Qinglan was exhausted from juggling all these thoughts and emotions.
Xiaoxi held her breath as Yan Qinglan moved closer. She didn’t dare make a sound.
Even though she knew the baby was theirs.
No one would believe her if she said it out loud.
Especially not Yan Qinglan. She would definitely know if she had ever marked Xiaoxi.
Their eyes met. Xiaoxi was nervous and on the verge of tears, but she couldn’t cry. She let out a choked sound and bit her lip to hold everything in.
Yan Qinglan pulled her hand back.
“Xiaoxi, you need to stay calm.”
She didn’t ask anything more, but it was clear she already understood what was going on.
Xiaoxi swallowed hard.
“This is your fault. You ignored me for days. And now you’re scaring me, bullying me. If anything happens to the baby, I’ll never forgive you.”
This baby came with her when she was reborn.
If anything happened to it, she would absolutely make Yan Qinglan pay.
Yan Qinglan closed her eyes and stayed silent.
Xiaoxi’s usual tricks didn’t work this time. She lowered her head and quietly shifted away, trying to move out of Yan Qinglan’s reach.
“Don’t move around. Wait for the doctor to check you,” Yan Qinglan said, catching her by the ankle.
The sudden warmth on her skin made Xiaoxi feel embarrassed. She almost wanted to cry again.
Was it normal for someone to be this calm after discovering their wife, even if only in name, was pregnant?
The calmer Yan Qinglan acted, the more uneasy Xiaoxi felt.
She was worried that Yan Qinglan was hiding something and would suddenly turn against her when she least expected it.
“I’m not getting rid of the baby,” Xiaoxi said as she wrapped her arms around her belly and kicked Yan Qinglan.
Yan Qinglan didn’t react. She didn’t even seem bothered by her usual dislike of being touched. She just patted the spot Xiaoxi had kicked, frowning slightly, but stayed where she was.
“I never said you had to. It’s your child, after all. It has nothing to do with me.”
“How does it have nothing to do with you?” Xiaoxi pouted, ready to argue.
This was their child. Nearly half its genes came from Yan Qinglan.
Yan Qinglan turned her head and looked at her.
Today, her eyes looked colder and more intense than usual.
The shape of her eyes tilted up just slightly, making the green in her pupils look darker and more distant. There was no warmth in them, only a quiet pressure that made Xiaoxi shrink back.
But Yan Qinglan didn’t say anything else. She just waited for the doctor to arrive.
When the doctor came in with medical equipment, she asked for permission, then started a full examination.
It was very thorough and took a while.
The whole time, Yan Qinglan sat nearby without saying a word. She didn’t touch her phone or deal with any work. She just watched Xiaoxi, deep in thought.
Her face didn’t have the usual gentle smile.
Xiaoxi followed the doctor’s instructions and cooperated with the exam. Every so often, she glanced at Yan Qinglan.
She noticed the way her lips were pressed into a thin line. That was always a sign that Yan Qinglan was upset, a sign she had dropped her usual calm mask.
The last time she saw that expression was back at the old Yan family house, when she had pushed too far in the bathroom.
How was she supposed to explain that the baby really was theirs?
Should she say she was reborn? Should she tell her the baby came with her when she returned from the past? Should she remind her of the month they had spent constantly together in their previous life? Or blame it on sleepwalking, saying Yan Qinglan must have marked her in her dreams?
Her head was spinning. She gave up trying to explain anything.
Xiaoxi decided to just go with the flow. Yan Qinglan had once said she could mess around if she wanted. So if something happened and she ended up pregnant, that was only natural.
She tried to convince herself not to care, but when she saw the look on Yan Qinglan’s face, guilt still crept in.
“Miss Wen, have you been eating and resting properly lately?” the doctor asked after reviewing the test results.
Yan Qinglan also moved closer.
Xiaoxi tried to quietly shift away, but Yan Qinglan reached out and wrapped an arm around her waist.
What is she trying to do now? Xiaoxi tensed up immediately and reached to push her hand away.
But she quickly realized that Yan Qinglan wasn’t holding her tightly, so she relaxed a little.
“She hasn’t been taking care of herself,” Yan Qinglan answered on her behalf.
Still eating cold food, sneaking snacks, stealing sweets just to annoy her.
“That needs to change. It’s not just about the baby’s health. If she doesn’t take care of her body, the delivery could be extremely difficult.” The doctor began writing down a nutrition plan.
Xiaoxi lowered her head and quietly listened.
“Her physical condition is good overall. During pregnancy, she should avoid intense activity and also avoid intimacy. But some light exercise is still necessary. Sitting for too long can also be harmful.”
When the word “intimacy” came up, both of them froze.
The doctor didn’t know the details of their marriage, so it wasn’t unusual to mention it.
Yan Qinglan had no intention of having any physical contact with Xiaoxi. But Xiaoxi…
Yan Qinglan glanced at her, and Xiaoxi’s ears immediately turned red.
“I haven’t done anything like that,” she blurted out. She hadn’t even experienced that sort of thing in this lifetime.
“Miss Wen, you also need to manage your emotions. Even when something or someone frustrates you, it’s better to express your feelings than to hold them in. But don’t let anger affect your health. President Yan, you should also take better care of her emotional and physical well-being. Don’t keep upsetting her. During pregnancy, it’s important to give in when needed.”
It was almost as if the doctor was pointing straight at Yan Qinglan, blaming her for Xiaoxi’s mood swings.
Xiaoxi gave a huff, pulled her waist away from Yan Qinglan’s arm, leaned back on the sofa, and looked lazily at the back of Yan Qinglan’s head.
“Did you hear that? Don’t make me upset.”
Yan Qinglan rubbed her temples with a sigh.
Wasn’t it Xiaoxi who never listened, who kept fooling around outside, then came home and stirred things up on purpose?
She looked at the doctor’s disappointed expression and hesitated.
So what if she had to put up with Xiaoxi for a few more months?
They were getting divorced anyway. There were no real feelings between them. And if Xiaoxi really had cheated…
“I heard you, Xiaoxi. I’ll be careful.”
She pulled Xiaoxi into her arms, her expression softening, finally letting go of the coldness and frustration she had been holding back.
For a moment, it looked like they were a loving newlywed couple, expecting their first child and visiting the doctor together.
But they both knew the truth.
They were each hiding something from the other.
Xiaoxi gave Yan Qinglan’s arm a hard pinch. When she saw that her face didn’t change at all, she finally looked somewhat satisfied.
The doctor went on with more reminders, listing symptoms that could happen during pregnancy, how to manage them, what to avoid, and even asked Yan Qinglan to call the housekeepers to inform them one by one.
The housekeepers didn’t stay at the marital home often and didn’t really understand the state of their relationship. But when they heard the news, they were all pleasantly surprised.
Xiaoxi had always been sweet and kind, and they genuinely liked her.
They immediately began discussing what kind of gifts they could prepare for the two of them and for the baby.
Finally, the doctor gave Xiaoxi a schedule for the checkups that would take place over the next eight months. After giving her a few more instructions, the doctor packed up to leave.
“Why didn’t she take the equipment with her?” Xiaoxi was still looking over the checklist and glanced at the machines before asking casually.
“We’ll need them again later.” Now that there were no outsiders, Yan Qinglan’s expression finally relaxed, and she returned to her usual demeanor.
Seeing her drop the act, Xiaoxi flinched and shifted a little farther away.
“I’m not going to do anything to you. Relax. You’re pregnant. It’s just a few months. I can handle it,” Yan Qinglan said calmly. She didn’t even bother trying to catch Xiaoxi anymore.
Before she had convinced herself to let go, maybe she would have still wanted to comfort Xiaoxi a little.
But now, with all those complicated feelings suppressed, even seeing Xiaoxi shrink away didn’t make her feel as hurt. She didn’t feel that strong desire to reach out anymore.
As for her clenched fists and the cushion she nearly tore apart earlier—those were just accidents. She hadn’t noticed. Nothing intentional.
“You have to keep your word,” Xiaoxi said, clearly relieved.
Yan Qinglan like this was easier to deal with than when she wore a fake smile and acted nice.
“I’ll tell the cook to be more careful with your meals. I’ll also have your room cleaned more frequently.”
Yan Qinglan stayed calm as she spoke, taking deep breaths and deliberately avoiding letting her gaze linger on Xiaoxi for too long.
“Okay.” Xiaoxi finally finished reading the doctor’s long list of instructions.
In her last life, she had prepared carefully for everything. She had made the decision to keep the baby and had memorized every step of what needed to be done.
This time, though, the baby didn’t feel real to her.
Other than one dream where the baby seemed to reach out to her, she often forgot there was a little life growing inside her.
Then she remembered the auction, and how Yan Qinglan hadn’t let her eat cold foods. On the way home, she had protected her belly during the sudden stop.
So it wasn’t just a coincidence. Yan Qinglan had known.
“Yan Qinglan, when did you find out? How did you even know? It’s not even two months yet. You can’t possibly tell just by looking, right?” Xiaoxi forgot all about staying cautious and reached out to poke Yan Qinglan.
Yan Qinglan grabbed her hand and pinned it down.
Xiaoxi gasped in pain. Her eyebrows drew together and she glared at Yan Qinglan, ready to scold her.
“You said you’d be gentle! So what if I poked you a little? Are you only polite when people are watching? Is everything you say just for show?” Xiaoxi struggled to pull her hand back.
Yan Qinglan almost sighed. Here they went again. Xiaoxi was the one who started it, yet she was the one complaining.
She loosened her grip but didn’t let go, still holding onto Xiaoxi and keeping her from pulling away.
“When did I say you couldn’t poke me? But if something happens because you keep messing around, and I have to clean up after it, how am I supposed to stay patient with you?”
Her voice had a hint of amusement.
Xiaoxi shivered. This time, she really wanted to run.
“There you go again. Don’t even think about it. If you try to run again, I’ll come after you.” Yan Qinglan’s voice grew sharper. Seeing Xiaoxi act like she was afraid of her made her temper flare.
It really seemed like whenever it came to Xiaoxi, or anything related to her, Yan Qinglan lost control of her emotions.
She took a breath, trying to calm herself down.
Why had she said all those things? Now there was no going back, and they had to live together again.
Xiaoxi bit her lip. “But you ignored me for a whole week. You didn’t come find me. You didn’t reply to my messages. You started this cold war. It’s your fault. That’s why I got upset. That’s why my health got worse.”
Yan Qinglan just looked at her without saying anything.
Xiaoxi ended up feeling embarrassed even before she finished. Her eyes darted around before she quietly slid her fingers into Yan Qinglan’s and leaned in closer.
“Qing-jie, is that why you were mad at me? Because of the baby?”
If that was really the reason, then Xiaoxi could understand it.
Even if she didn’t want to understand, it still made sense. But she felt so wronged.
Looking at Xiaoxi trying to act clever and innocent, Yan Qinglan couldn’t hold back anymore. She reached out and gently pushed her down onto the sofa.
“Xiaoxi, who is the father of your baby?”
The smile finally disappeared.
The quiet tiger showed her teeth.
