Three Sentences That Made My Ex-Wife Spit Blood - Chapter 26
When Yu Xiyun saw their hands intertwined, her gaze softened slightly. She stepped back a little, as if politely giving space.
Wen Huaxi was not pleased. It was rare for her to meet someone who matched her taste, and now Yan Qinglan was getting in the way again.
Yan Qinglan was unbelievable. On one hand, she said Wen Huaxi could play around outside as she liked, and on the other, she insisted on interfering with even the smallest spark of interest.
She was even trying to control who she could be friends with.
Not even her own sister tried to manage her this much.
Wen Huaxi did not believe Yan Qinglan liked her.
Just days ago, she had learned that Yan Qinglan went to see Meng Qingzhou.
To her, this just confirmed that Yan Qinglan was being her usual odd self.
This woman’s thought process was a mystery. Someone like Wen Huaxi could never hope to understand it.
She shrugged off Yan Qinglan’s hand and stepped forward, determined to speak with Yu Xiyun.
Now, Yu Xiyun was a little confused.
She had assumed Wen Huaxi was taken. Maybe it had happened after they met that night.
But the way Wen Huaxi looked at that woman did not feel like she was looking at a girlfriend.
At most, it felt like someone looking at an elder in the family.
Holding hands with an older sister was not unusual. Having a protective older sister who chased off admirers was not unusual either.
Still, something felt off. Yu Xiyun convinced herself not to overthink it and casually leaned closer to Wen Huaxi.
She shifted just enough to block Yan Qinglan’s line of sight.
With Wen Huaxi turning her head to focus on Yu Xiyun, Yan Qinglan could no longer see her face at all.
Her facial expression remained unchanged, but her emerald green eyes darkened noticeably.
She knew who this woman was. An alpha.
Could it be that Wen Huaxi’s child was with this person?
Just thinking about it made Yan Qinglan feel breathless, as if something was weighing down on her chest. The pressure was worse than she had expected.
She took two steps forward, intending to take Wen Huaxi’s hand again.
This time, she wanted to be more direct. Maybe even pull her into a full embrace.
Wen Huaxi sensed her approaching and instinctively turned to avoid her.
In doing so, she accidentally tripped over her right foot and stumbled forward.
Yu Xiyun caught her just in time.
She pulled her gently into her arms, then gave Yan Qinglan a brief glance.
Yan Qinglan’s expression finally changed.
“Xiaoxi, how could you be so careless?” she said as she reached out to hold Wen Huaxi’s arm.
Wen Huaxi was not used to leaning on someone she had only met once.
Once she had regained her balance, she quickly stepped out of Yu Xiyun’s arms.
But that gave Yan Qinglan the perfect chance to pull her back again.
“Why do you care? Yan Qinglan, are you seriously trying to control everything I do?” Wen Huaxi tried to pull her arm away once more.
But this time, she could not break free. Yan Qinglan was gripping her tightly, enough that it began to hurt.
“Let go of me!” Wen Huaxi snapped and yanked harder.
There was no way Yan Qinglan would let go that easily. She had let her go once, and immediately Wen Huaxi had fallen into someone else’s arms.
She had to admit, the sight of it made her extremely upset.
Doing things behind her back was one thing, but doing it right in front of her face?
That was something she could not accept.
She told herself it was because she did not want Wen Huaxi getting into another accident.
After all, this woman had already managed to come back with a child. Another incident could damage the agreement they had made.
Yan Qinglan still did not fully understand what this bitter feeling inside her meant.
But she knew one thing. She could not just stand by and watch Wen Huaxi throw herself into someone else’s arms.
“Jie was just worried. I did not want to see you fall again.” Yan Qinglan pulled Wen Huaxi into her arms completely.
Unlike her discomfort in Yu Xiyun’s embrace, Wen Huaxi had grown somewhat used to Yan Qinglan’s arms.
She leaned against her and did not struggle immediately. Instead, she adjusted her posture to make it less uncomfortable.
But then she looked up and saw Yu Xiyun’s cool and beautiful face.
That reminded her she needed to get rid of this extra burden named Yan Qinglan.
“You should go. Don’t you have work to do? Go take care of your business.” Wen Huaxi started to push her away.
Taking advantage of a moment when Yan Qinglan was not fully alert, she grabbed her arm and shoved her toward the car.
Yan Qinglan was already full of frustration. That strange tightness in her chest made her even more annoyed, so she let Wen Huaxi push her without resisting.
She still did not understand why she was feeling this way.
She was the one who had said Wen Huaxi could see other people. And she still believed that.
They were in a contractual relationship. There were no feelings involved.
So what was she doing today?
Why was she upset?
Yan Qinglan sat in the car and looked back one last time at Wen Huaxi standing on set.
That vibrant red hair made her the most eye-catching person in any crowd.
And the most radiant, the most charming.
Yan Qinglan tried to steady her racing thoughts.
She had to admit it. She thought Wen Huaxi was adorable.
Was that not a strange feeling in itself?
After removing this small obstacle on her path to becoming a rising star, Wen Huaxi finally breathed a sigh of relief.
She returned to Yu Xiyun’s side and smiled at her with a hint of apology.
Yu Xiyun gave her a gentle smile and shook her head.
“Was that your sister?” she asked. Watching their interaction earlier, she had some doubts.
“Something like that,” Wen Huaxi replied casually.
Just “Qing-jie.”
She had no intention of explaining further.
She had not even decided who she wanted to get serious with.
There was no need to reveal too much to someone she had only just met, even if she could flirt with her a little.
Besides, Yu Xiyun was her coworker.
In the entertainment industry, it was hard to tell who had what intentions.
She remembered that in her past life, it was during this very film shoot that she had met Lu Tong.
Back then, Lu Tong had been cast as the second female lead.
This time, the project had started earlier than expected. Lu Tong had not even entered the entertainment industry yet, so the role had gone to someone else. That made sense.
And truthfully, Yu Xiyun’s aura was a perfect match for the role.
“I’m Yu Xiyun. May I finally know your full name?” Yu Xiyun asked with a calm smile. She did not seem bothered by Yan Qinglan’s presence.
After all, she only found Wen Huaxi visually appealing. If they ended up just being friends, that would be fine too.
“Wen Huaxi. Looks like we both have the character ‘xi’ in our names,” Wen Huaxi replied with a relaxed smile.
Now that Yan Qinglan was gone, she finally felt like herself again.
“That means we have quite the fate between us, doesn’t it?” Yu Xiyun smiled gently, keeping just the right balance of closeness as she spoke with Wen Huaxi.
She thought to herself that even if she managed things perfectly now, once filming started, there would still be ambiguous scenes between them.
Especially the ones that relied solely on eye contact. That kind was even harder to act than physical contact.
Beyond the faint attraction, Yu Xiyun was being realistic.
Wen Huaxi looked young, and she had not heard of her having any previous works. Yet she managed to land the lead role under Qin Shuyue, a highly respected name.
If Wen Huaxi kept improving, she could easily dominate the entertainment industry.
It made more sense to be on good terms with her.
But perhaps it was best to avoid anything romantic.
Wen Huaxi did not think as much as Yu Xiyun did.
To her, friendship was better when kept simple. Like her friendship with Lu Tong.
Thinking of that made Wen Huaxi feel a little sentimental.
She wondered if Qin Shuyue, after seeing the current Lu Tong, might consider giving her a role as the younger version of the second female lead. That way, they would not even need to put much makeup on Yu Xiyun.
But that might be considered taking Yu Xiyun’s opportunity. Wen Huaxi decided to keep the idea to herself for now.
By noon, her luggage was delivered to the set.
She opened it and found everything intact. All the things she had packed for her “runaway plan” were still there.
Now, even if Yan Qinglan made things difficult for her again, she could just grab her suitcase and leave.
Wen Huaxi took a photo of her luggage and sent a thank-you message to Yan Qinglan.
For the past few days, Yan Qinglan had always replied instantly.
But even after lunch break ended, there was no response. Wen Huaxi found it odd but decided not to dwell on it.
The first day of filming was not too demanding. It mainly focused on helping the cast and director get used to each other’s working style.
Yu Xiyun, being a professional stage actress, was a natural fit for the second female lead. She had only accepted the role out of respect for Qin Shuyue.
Among the supporting cast were a few second or third-tier veterans. At first, they were not too happy about an unknown newcomer like Wen Huaxi playing the lead.
That was until Wen Huaxi started breezing through scene after scene in one take, even under Qin Shuyue’s famously strict direction.
Not only did she not cause any delays, she even helped the whole crew wrap early. That shut down all complaints.
Later, Wen Huaxi requested a copy of the footage they had filmed that day. She planned to review it at home and study her performance.
Reinterpreting a role she had already played in her past life was a real challenge, and she wanted to do even better this time.
As promised, Yan Qinglan came to pick her up.
But this time, even when Wen Huaxi stood close to Yu Xiyun again, Yan Qinglan did not show any reaction.
She just stood coldly to the side, like a statue.
Feeling a little guilty, Wen Huaxi said goodbye to Yu Xiyun early and quickly walked over to Yan Qinglan.
“Qing-jie,” she greeted her cheerfully, trying to break the weird tension between them.
“Xiaoxi. Let’s go,” Yan Qinglan replied. She was holding herself back.
After noticing her recent emotional changes, she had tried to adjust.
She wanted to let go of the strange feelings she had toward her contractual wife.
Yan Qinglan wanted to step back and let Wen Huaxi do whatever she wanted.
If Wen Huaxi actually crossed the line with someone else, that would be the perfect excuse for Yan Qinglan to force herself to stop feeling anything.
Her expression remained calm, with a faint, unreadable smile.
Wen Huaxi glanced at her a few times.
Yan Qinglan had been very warm toward her lately. Now she seemed to have cooled off again.
That was fine. She was planning to look for a new love interest anyway.
From now on, they could just play their roles. A couple in name only, cold and distant behind the scenes.
The whole ride was quiet. Yan Qinglan had nothing to say.
Wen Huaxi started to feel a little uncomfortable and gradually leaned toward her.
“What is it, Xiaoxi?” Yan Qinglan asked with a calm blink, quietly placing the hand that had wanted to pull Wen Huaxi close behind her back.
“You didn’t reply to me all afternoon,” Wen Huaxi said, noticing the way Yan Qinglan kept her hand away. It surprised her.
Wasn’t this the same woman who kept hugging her recently? Why the sudden change?
“Jie was busy,” Yan Qinglan lied without flinching.
In truth, she had been completely free all afternoon, sitting in her office, thinking nonstop about her and Wen Huaxi.
She had even gone over those strange extra memories again, trying to separate herself from the version of her that existed in them.
Especially emotionally. She could not let those leftover feelings influence her any further.
“Alright. But if Jie is that busy, you don’t have to come pick me up. Xiao Liu is here. I can handle it. If it gets too late, I just won’t go home.” Wen Huaxi said it with only the slightest trace of disappointment.
That hint of sadness disappeared after she finished convincing herself.
“No,” Yan Qinglan blurted out, losing control of her hand in the process.
She immediately wrapped her arm around Wen Huaxi’s shoulders and pulled her close.
Just before Wen Huaxi could fully lean into her, Yan Qinglan stopped herself. She held them less than an inch apart, then gently pushed her back into her seat.
Wen Huaxi was completely confused.
“Jie means… it’s better if Xiaoxi still comes home,” Yan Qinglan said, her ears flushing red from embarrassment.
She coughed lightly and covered her mouth to hide it.
“Qing-jie, you’ve been really strict with me lately. You even watch how I talk to coworkers. Now you want me home every night too. Do you miss me that much?”
Wen Huaxi pouted and complained casually, though she had already accepted the fact that she would be under this old-fashioned woman’s watch again.
Yan Qinglan paused, caught off guard.
“That’s my fault,” she said softly. “Xiaoxi, you can talk to anyone you like. If it’s too late or too inconvenient, you don’t have to come home either.”
Wen Huaxi could tell she was acting strange.
Yan Qinglan lowered her gaze, as if coming to a decision.
