This Alpha Is So Devoted to His Wife - Chapter 87
In the living room now, the entire family was seated on the sofas.
Duan Yuluo felt all their eyes fixed on him and Lu Xinghe. It wasn’t exactly unbearable, but everyone’s expressions were identical—they all wanted to know why they hadn’t been told earlier.
“The reason we didn’t tell you about the pregnancy sooner was because it wasn’t stable yet. We wanted to wait until things stabilized to share the good news,” Lu Xinghe said first, gently supporting Duan Yuluo’s back.
“So, you were already pregnant during the Shareholders’ Meeting last time.”
Old Master Chu, sitting on the central sofa, spoke slowly.
Duan Yuluo smiled bashfully: “…Yes, Great-Grandpa Chu, your eyes are sharp.”
“How far along are you?”
“Nine weeks,” Duan Yuluo said.
Lu Xinghe gave a helpless sigh: “Ten weeks, darling.”
Duan Yuluo murmured: “Oh, ten weeks.”
Jiang Nianqiao walked to the back of Duan Yuluo’s sofa: “I knew your memory has been terrible lately. You keep forgetting things I asked you to do. Pregnancy really does make your memory fuzzy.” She then glanced at Luo Yuduan, the elder brother who had just returned, and chuckled: “Big Brother, you need to lighten up your expression. Your little nephew is ten weeks old already.”
Duan Yuluo nudged Luo Yuduan, who was sitting on the armrest next to him, with his elbow: “Say something.”
“Say what?” Luo Yuduan said flatly, giving Lu Xinghe a look.
Lu Xinghe felt a chill down his spine from the stare. He was truly exasperated with this brother-complex, and he offered a half-smile: “A simple ‘congratulations’ will suffice. I also wish Big Brother an early son, no, Big Brother doesn’t have a partner yet.”
Luo Yuduan’s temple throbbed.
Duan Yuluo quickly covered Lu Xinghe’s mouth, signaling with his eyes to stop talking or they would end up fighting.
The elders knew the personalities of the younger family members and didn’t take the jokes seriously. Instead, they were more concerned about Duan Yuluo’s pregnancy.
“Have you been to the hospital for a check-up?” First Father Duan Yizhou asked.
Lu Xinghe pulled Duan Yuluo’s hand down and held it: “Yes, we checked. Everything is fine, except his morning sickness is quite severe. He throws up everything he eats.”
At this, the married Alphas of the Chu and Luo families became experienced.
“That happens. When Zhu Zai’s dad was pregnant, not only was his morning sickness severe, but his temper was also worse than usual. His emotions fluctuated a lot, and he cried easily. All of that is normal.”
“That’s right, including appetite and sleep. Especially during the first three months…”
Lu Xinghe leaned forward, giving his full attention to the shared experiences. This was his first time becoming a father, and he was inexperienced. He was afraid he wouldn’t take good care of Duan Yuluo, so he had to listen carefully.
Duan Yuluo felt moved seeing Lu Xinghe like this. He didn’t even realize the corners of his mouth were turned up until he felt a light tap on the back of his head. He looked up and saw it was Luo Yuduan, and he mouthed, ‘What?’
Luo Yuduan said nothing, but stood up and walked toward the garden.
Duan Yuluo understood his brother’s meaning. He tried to pull his hand away from Lu Xinghe’s, but it was grabbed back.
“Where are you going?”
Duan Yuluo saw Lu Xinghe frowning and chuckled: “My brother wants to talk to me. I’m going to chat with him. You stay here with the family and learn some more from their experiences.” He patted Lu Xinghe’s head and stood up.
Lu Xinghe narrowed his eyes, his gaze fixed on Luo Yuduan with an expression that said, ‘If you dare scold my wife, you’re dead.’
Luo Yuduan caught Lu Xinghe’s gaze: “He’s my little brother. What could I possibly do?”
The two brothers walked out of the house into the garden.
Night had fallen, and all the garden lights were on.
“Brother, you really don’t need to worry. No one in this world loves me more than Lu Xinghe.”
“I know. He’s treated you like his own child since you were young.”
Duan Yuluo was momentarily speechless. He didn’t know how to refute his brother’s description and burst out laughing: “If you know that, why are you so aggressive toward him?”
“I’ve been on an assignment in Country D recently. The Clemence family might be facing a major upheaval soon. I’m not sure if Lu Xinghe knows, but that’s my main concern.” Luo Yuduan looked sideways at his brother: “You’re pregnant now; you need people around you, especially your Alpha.”
Duan Yuluo stopped walking: “…What upheaval?”
“Due to the health of the Queen of Country D and the public demand to dissolve the monarchy, if the monarchy dissolves, the agreement Lu Xinghe signed last year to renounce his royalty status will become null and void. He would still be a member of the Clemence family.”
“And then?”
“He might have to go back to deal with these matters.”
Duan Yuluo understood: “Then he can take me with him.”
Luo Yuduan: “You can’t go to Country D. It’s too chaotic and unsafe right now.”
Duan Yuluo frowned: “No one can touch me.”
“Have you forgotten what happened before? These capitalists won’t show you any mercy.” Luo Yuduan saw his brother’s drooping eyebrows and noticeable low spirits: “However, this depends on how Lu Xinghe handles it. He seems so preoccupied with you that I don’t think he even knows about this.”
Duan Yuluo turned to face the large lawn beside them. He had been thinking about this question recently: he and Lu Xinghe had never been apart for such a long time. If a separation truly became necessary, how would he cope?
“Lu Xinghe is highly capable. At the very least, he single-handedly bore all the public scrutiny about leaving the monarchy and a huge debt. The Queen even stipulated that only he, not his parents, was allowed to repay this debt.”
“Debt?” Duan Yuluo looked at his brother: “What debt?”
“Since he was born the son of a Duke, the Queen made him a Prince. That title came with a fiefdom, and the castle expenses were paid by the Royal Family. After he left the monarchy, he was required to repay the expenses of those twenty-plus years, along with the dividends from the ten charitable organizations the Queen had gifted him. It should be over ten billion in total.”
Duan Yuluo’s head went buzz. Lu Xinghe had never mentioned any of this to him. In fact, after leaving the monarchy, he had never spoken about his family matters again; the only people he kept in touch with were Uncle Clemence and Aunt Lu Qing.
“I don’t think anyone in the family knows about this,” Luo Yuduan saw Duan Yuluo about to walk onto the grass and pulled his brother’s arm: “It’s not that I dislike Lu Xinghe, but his identity is too sensitive. I understand what he’s trying to do—he loves you very much—but I’m worried that his helplessness will make things difficult for you.”
Duan Yuluo remained silent.
He touched the ring on his ring finger. The top part was a little pointed, and pressing down slightly caused a little pain.
“Kiddo,” Luo Yuduan called him.
“So what?” Duan Yuluo looked up at his brother, his eyes showing no sign of retreat or wavering: “He was able to choose me and come to me resolutely and without hesitation. I can do the same. The hardest times are already over. These problems now are nothing.”
Even if they had to be temporarily separated, as long as Lu Xinghe would eventually return, what did it matter?
Their feelings for each other could not be undermined by a brief separation.
He then pulled his arm away from his brother’s hand.
Luo Yuduan watched his brother’s action, realizing he was angry, and paused for a few seconds: “Kiddo, are you angry?”
Duan Yuluo took two deep breaths. He didn’t want to conflict with his brother, who was rarely home, but he couldn’t help punching his brother’s chest: “Luo Yuduan, you’ll never find a wife if you keep acting like this. You’re a total buzzkill.”
With that, he walked back into the house, no longer wanting to talk to his brother.
Luo Yuduan stood rooted to the spot. A few seconds later, utterly confused, he hurried after his brother: “Why? I was just worried about your safety.”
Seeing that his brother ignored him, he was extremely frustrated: “Kiddo, I’m sorry. Big Brother said the wrong thing.”
He figured he’d apologize first, regardless of what he was apologizing for.
The garden door was pushed open.
Lu Xinghe was the first to turn around and saw Duan Yuluo walking back with an unhappy, furrowed brow. Did the brothers have a fight? How dare Luo Yuduan argue with his wife at a time like this?!
He stood up and walked toward Duan Yuluo. Seeing his slightly wronged look, he pulled him into a hug: “What’s wrong? Did Luo Yuduan bully you?” He then gave Luo Yuduan a gloomy look.
Now it was Luo Yuduan’s turn to be silent: “…”
Duan Yuluo hesitated. He naturally wanted to ask Lu Xinghe if he had truly kept the matter of the massive debt from him, but there were so many family members present, and he was worried about pressuring Lu Xinghe.
He could only swallow his question for the time being, lowering his eyes: “Nothing. I’m hungry.”
The family naturally couldn’t let a pregnant person go hungry.
Old Master Chu stood up: “Let’s eat.”
And so, this scene unfolded at the dinner table.
To show his apology, Luo Yuduan actively peeled shrimp for his younger brother, afraid that his brother would really ignore him.
As the husband, Lu Xinghe naturally didn’t want to be outdone. How could he let his wife eat shrimp peeled by anyone other than himself? He absolutely had to eat his.
“These shrimp were peeled by your brother, Kiddo. Hurry and eat.”
“These shrimp were peeled by your husband. Eat mine.”
Duan Yuluo looked at the bowl, which was overflowing with shrimp: “…” But not wanting to embarrass his brother and Lu Xinghe, he lowered his head and ate.
But pregnancy was inexplicably moody. He had loved shrimp last night, but today, one bite made him nauseous.
He covered his mouth and stood up.
Lu Xinghe immediately followed him to the restroom.
He threw up almost everything he had eaten in the toilet, seemingly for an eternity.
This was the first time Lu Xinghe had seen Duan Yuluo vomit so violently. Seeing tears stream down his face, he was heartbroken. As soon as he finished, he quickly handed him a cup to rinse his mouth, wiped his face, and hugged him close to comfort him.
“You didn’t feel like eating shrimp today, did you?”
Duan Yuluo buried his face in Lu Xinghe’s shoulder and neck, smelling his Alpha pheromones. This scent made him feel slightly less miserable. He couldn’t control the emotional changes accompanying his morning sickness, and he replayed everything his brother had just said in his mind.
He couldn’t hold back the tears.
It turned out Lu Xinghe had kept so much distress from him, yet he was willing to spend money on him again and again. He couldn’t even imagine how much Lu Xinghe had done without his knowledge.
Barely suppressed sobs sounded from the embrace.
Lu Xinghe’s body stiffened. He lowered his head, holding Duan Yuluo’s shoulders: “What’s wrong, Baby?”
Just then, the phone in his pocket vibrated.
Lu Xinghe could only hold Duan Yuluo while pulling out his phone. He saw it was a transnational call from his father: “It’s my dad.” He answered the call.
Duan Yuluo’s hand subconsciously gripped the fabric on Lu Xinghe’s chest. Anxiety rose, as if he had guessed something, his knuckles turning white from the force.
He was trembling.
Lu Xinghe opened his mouth and called out: “Dad.”
But his father’s low-spirited voice came from the other end of the line: “Bennett, come back to Country D now. Your grandmother is failing. Come back to see her one last time.”
Lu Xinghe’s expression paused. He frowned: “Okay, I understand.”
He then hung up the phone.
Just as he was about to tell Duan Yuluo, he realized the Omega in front of him was already in tears, silently weeping. His body froze.
