This Alpha Is So Devoted to His Wife - Chapter 80
The restroom door opened.
Secretary Lin Wen walked forward nervously, seeing that Duan Yeluo’s complexion was indeed poor. “Young CEO Duan, are you alright? Do you need me to call a doctor?”
“It’s fine. I just need a moment’s rest.” Duan Yeluo walked back to his seat and sat down, recovering from the intense urge to vomit.
“Then I’ll go get you the usual tea you drink.” Lin Wen walked to the pantry to brew the tea Duan Yeluo usually had.
Duan Yeluo leaned against the chair to rest, relieving the nausea in his stomach. At least he felt much better after throwing up.
“Here’s your tea.” Lin Wen walked out with the tea and placed it on Duan Yeluo’s desk. “Have a couple of sips and see if you feel better. Should I ask the kitchen to send up some dessert?”
When Duan Yeluo heard the word ‘dessert,’ his brows furrowed. The feeling of revulsion surged up again. He held it back, picked up the freshly brewed tea, and took a sip.
Perhaps the slightly bitter taste of the tea quickly suppressed the nausea.
“No need. I’ll rest for half an hour.”
Lin Wen nodded knowingly. “Okay. Then I’ll inform the research institute. You rest first.” She then walked out of the office.
Half an hour later.
The CEO’s office door opened.
Lin Wen immediately stood up from her seat, watching her boss emerge.
Duan Yeluo walked out as usual, buttoning his suit jacket and adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. He met Lin Wen’s slightly concerned gaze and nodded. “Let’s go.”
“Young CEO Duan, are you really alright?” Lin Wen followed Duan Yeluo, asking again out of concern.
“I’m fine. Don’t worry too much.”
Soon, several cars drove out of the parking lot, slowly heading toward the Galaxy Research Institute.
The Galaxy Research Institute, the research arm of the Galaxy Group, gathered experts in global biomedicine and various fields. Starting with the development of the inhibitor, the institute had led many medical revolutions that shook the world—dangerous, yet also creating many miracles.
“Young CEO Duan.”
Duan Yeluo entered the institute and saw the Institute Director walking out. He nodded. “Director Zhang, what is the status of the latest batch of volunteers for the secondary differentiation gene testing program?”
“We have one very special volunteer. He was accepted into the testing program last year and unexpectedly conceived two months after successfully implanting the Guardian Chip. He himself only found out after he was more than three months along.”
Duan Yeluo saw the Director Zhang looked troubled. “So, does this volunteer want to withdraw from the program, or…?”
“No, but he is far along in his pregnancy—nine months, close to his due date. The obstetricians at Galaxy Hospital are discussing the birth plan. The main concern is whether the Guardian Chip will affect the baby. According to our guidelines, one must wait two years after implanting the Guardian Chip before attempting conception, for the safety of the fetus.”
“What are the results of his prenatal checkups?”
“The prenatal checkups have been clear all the way. There are no issues with the baby.”
“Then have Obstetrics form a small team. This is a very special case. Pay close attention. He was originally a Beta who differentiated into an Omega, correct?”
“Yes. According to the doctor’s feedback, this secondary differentiation patient became unexpectedly pregnant before his reproductive cavity was fully developed after differentiating into an Omega. There are many uncertain factors, but the one thing we can confirm through prenatal checkups is that the baby does not have the secondary differentiation gene defect.”
“That’s good.”
That was the meaning of the Guardian Chip’s existence: prevention and protection.
Duan Yeluo followed Director Zhang into the Guardian Chip laboratory. The moment he stepped through the door, a scent more concentrated than outside rushed over. He paused, the smell, which he should have been accustomed to, was more easily detected than usual and, at this moment, completely intolerable.
His brows furrowed, the curve of his tightly pressed lips trembled slightly, and his face visibly paled a few shades more.
…What was going on?
Night gradually fell, like dark ink spreading and staining the bright lights on the horizon.
A group of people walked out of the lobby of the Carlo Hotel.
“Young CEO Duan is young and promising. I have great confidence in this collaboration.” The Chairman of the Carlo Group extended his hand to the young man, his eyes full of admiration.
Duan Yeluo smiled and shook hands with him. “It is my honor to work with Chairman Carlo. I look forward to a successful partnership.”
“A successful partnership.”
After leaving the hotel, Lin Wen kept observing her boss’s condition, especially since he had vomited again during the dinner banquet.
Duan Yeluo saw the bellboy had pulled his car up to the entrance. He looked at Secretary Lin Wen. “You should go home first.”
“Young CEO Duan, can you manage by yourself?” Lin Wen held the driver’s side car door. Seeing that Duan Yeluo’s face was not looking good, she was still worried. “Should I stay here with you and wait for CEO Lu?”
“It’s fine. It’s late now. You go on first.” Duan Yeluo closed the car door for Lin Wen and smiled. “Drive safely.”
Since her boss had insisted, Lin Wen could only acquiesce. She started the car and put her hands on the steering wheel. “Then I’ll be going, Young CEO Duan.”
“Mhm.”
Duan Yeluo watched his secretary drive away, then walked to a flowerbed nearby. The air here made him feel slightly better. At least it wasn’t like the stimulating alcohol scent inside the banquet that made him want to vomit.
He took out his phone and received a call from Lu Xinghe. Before he could speak, he heard the apology on the other end.
“Baby, I’m stuck in traffic here. Wait for me for ten more minutes.”
“Okay. Drive carefully. I’ll wait for you.”
“Did you eat enough tonight? I brought you strawberry pudding.”
Duan Yeluo’s face changed when he heard the words ‘strawberry pudding.’ The feeling he had just managed to suppress rushed back. He could only vaguely reply, “Okay.”
Lu Xinghe on the other end seemed to sense something off in Duan Yeluo’s voice. “Did you drink?”
“I didn’t drink.”
“Then your voice sounds uncomfortable. Are you too tired?”
“Mhm, a little.”
Lu Xinghe’s heart softened. He looked up at the short stretch of traffic ahead, wishing he could fly to Duan Yeluo’s side. “Wait for me. I’ll be there soon.”
“I know. Drive slowly. I’ll wait for you at the shopping mall across from the Carlo Hotel.”
Duan Yeluo hung up the phone, intending to walk to the brightly lit area of the shopping mall across the street to wait for Lu Xinghe. Just then, a car screeched to a halt in front of him. He saw a man rush out of the driver’s side door, his white T-shirt stained with blood.
He froze, half-closing his eyes, trying to make out the face.
Due to his night blindness, his visibility was greatly reduced at night. Only when the man approached could he clearly see who it was. It seemed to be… Doctor Wen from the Chinese medicine clinic?
Wen Yu had originally intended to run the red light and go straight to the hospital, but his partner in the back seat couldn’t wait. He was forced to ask for help from a passerby, and unexpectedly ran into an acquaintance.
He truly didn’t have time for pleasantries and urgently pleaded, “Hello, it’s like this: my partner’s water just broke. He’s showing signs of premature labor. He’s in a lot of discomfort right now, but I’m driving and can’t carry him. Could I trouble you to drive the car for me?”
Duan Yeluo saw the blood on his clothes and smelled the strong, pungent scent of blood as he approached. He could tell the man was in a desperate hurry. “I can’t drive at night, but I can help you take care of your partner. Is he in the back seat?”
Wen Yu’s eyes showed gratitude upon hearing this. He immediately rushed to open the back door, first comforting his partner, then turning back to Duan Yeluo. “Yes, my partner is here. Thank you so much. I’m truly sorry for the trouble.”
“It’s nothing. I’m happy to help.” Duan Yeluo got into the back seat.
In the back seat, a young man with a large pregnant belly was leaning against the car door. He was clutching his stomach, his face pale, and a faint smell of blood emanated from him.
Duan Yeluo disregarded his own discomfort with the scent and supported the man. He smelled a very faint Omega pheromone scent. He let the man lean on him. “Sir, are you alright?”
The young man’s forehead was covered in cold sweat. His hands gripped the fabric over his stomach, and he looked to be in great pain. “…My stomach hurts so much.”
Wen Yu quickly started the car and slammed on the gas pedal, afraid of delaying even a second. He kept glancing at the rearview mirror while simultaneously trying to contact the hospital.
“Yes, your scheduled date cannot be changed at this time.”
“I’m sorry, there are no beds available in the delivery room right now.”
“We are very sorry, but we currently have no beds at our hospital.”
…
One rejection call after another. The atmosphere was filled with helplessness and suppression.
Duan Yeluo felt the young man leaning against him trembling violently, his hands icy cold. Sometimes, the harsh reality of society could easily crush a person, or even a family. Not seeing it made it easy to ignore, but having seen it, it was hard to pretend not to notice.
He took out his phone, ready to contact Galaxy Hospital.
Just then, his eyes inadvertently glanced at a very faint mark on the young man’s neck—a pair of small white wings.
This was the mark of the Guardian Chip.
Secondary differentiation gene defect patient, pregnant…
Could this be—
“…It hurts so much. Help me…”
The young man’s bloody hand suddenly grabbed his, a tight grip, like clutching a lifeline. He lowered his head and met the other’s nearly pleading eyes—the despair of a father begging a stranger when all else failed.
Wen Yu, driving, gripped the steering wheel tightly, his eyes bloodshot. He looked at the red light that still had ninety seconds and was burning with anxiety. He turned to look at his partner, whose face had lost all color from the pain.
Duan Yeluo’s hand was gripped painfully. He looked at the red light. The road was relatively empty. He immediately dialed the emergency dispatch center. The moment the call connected, he spoke directly. “Hello, there is a pregnant person in a car at the intersection of Ronghua Avenue. They need to get to the hospital urgently. Is it possible to run the red light now?”
“Yes. Please ensure normal passage under the condition of absolute safety. I will override the light here.”
He immediately told Wen Yu to report his license plate number.
Two seconds later, the empty road immediately switched from a red light to a green light. The car sped through, and ten seconds later, it reverted to a red light.
After hanging up, Duan Yeluo called the Director of Obstetrics at Galaxy Hospital. The moment the call connected, he got straight to the point. “I am coming to the hospital now. Reserve a room in Obstetrics. Notify the Secondary Differentiation Team at the Research Institute to be ready. A friend is in premature labor. Yes, he is a secondary differentiation patient and is giving birth.”
He patted the driver’s seat. “Turn and drive to Galaxy Hospital.”
Wen Yu’s head was buzzing. This… has this person solved the problem for him?
But at this moment, he had no other recourse. He could only obey the instruction and drive to Galaxy Hospital. Who wouldn’t want to give birth and stay for postpartum care at Galaxy Hospital? The problem was you had to secure an appointment. This person…
He felt even more like he knew him.
The car arrived at the hospital quickly.
The emergency department doctors were already prepared, rushing out with a gurney.
Duan Yeluo helped the doctor assist the young man in labor out of the car. His white shirt was stained with a lot of blood, showing how long the young man had endured the labor.
“Thank you so much. I—I need to go see my partner first.” Wen Yu said to Duan Yeluo, then anxiously followed the doctors rushing the young man on the gurney into the emergency room.
Duan Yeluo naturally understood. He looked down at himself. His face shifted slightly. He forced back the rising nausea, mainly because the smell was too pungent. What if Lu Xinghe saw him like this—
Wait a minute.
…He forgot that Lu Xinghe was supposed to pick him up.
He quickly called Lu Xinghe back.
Lu Xinghe was driving toward the Carlo Hotel. The moment he answered Duan Yeluo’s call, he spoke first. “Baby, I’m almost there. Where are you—”
“Xingxing, I’m at Galaxy Hospital right now. Come pick me up here. Don’t rush. I’m fine. I was just helping someone.”
Lu Xinghe’s hand gripping the steering wheel abruptly tightened, and his eyes instantly darkened. The car immediately made a U-turn.
Outside the operating room in Obstetrics, Wen Yu was anxiously pacing back and forth.
Duan Yeluo, sitting on a nearby chair to rest, felt even more nauseous watching him pace.
He pressed his hands onto his thighs, trying to alleviate the recurring, indescribable dizziness. Then he looked at Wen Yu’s back. “Doctor Wen, don’t worry. No one is more professional than my team. Please sit down and rest.”
Wen Yu naturally couldn’t sit still, but he walked over to Duan Yeluo’s side. Seeing that his partner had stained his clothes, which looked very expensive, he apologized. “I am truly sorry, and I’m incredibly grateful. Without you, I truly don’t know what I would have done.”
“Since I helped you, then trust my doctors. Sit down.” Duan Yeluo patted the chair beside him and said honestly, “You’re making me dizzy with all that walking.”
“I haven’t had a chance to ask your name.”
“My name is Duan Yeluo.”
Wen Yu’s expression went from stunned to shocked. His eyes widened. Only then did he recall why he felt the person looked familiar: he was the developer of the Guardian Chip! He sat down next to Duan Yeluo excitedly and grabbed his hand, shaking it gratefully.
“I am so sorry. I didn’t recognize you. I… I know who you are. My partner is a beneficiary of the secondary differentiation gene testing program. It’s… it’s really too lucky that I ran into you.”
Duan Yeluo leaned back against the chair. The shaking of his hand made the feeling of revulsion even stronger, and his face paled another shade.
Wen Yu noticed his poor complexion. He immediately took a very small vial of oily substance from his bag and handed it to Duan Yeluo. “Hold this and smell it. It helps relieve dizziness and nausea.”
He remembered Duan Yeluo saying he couldn’t drive. “Are you carsick?”
Duan Yeluo took it and lowered his head to sniff. He felt slightly less nauseous, but as soon as he put the small bottle down, the pungent, bloody smell from the blood-stained shirt on his arm instantly rushed into his nostrils. He couldn’t help but turn his face away and gag.
“You…”
Duan Yeluo raised his hand in apology. “I’m sorry. That was rude.”
“Would you mind letting me take a look?” Wen Yu motioned for him to place his hand on his lap.
Duan Yeluo thought for a moment and placed his hand palm-up on his lap.
Wen Yu explored his pulse with his fingers. After about ten seconds, his eyes flashed. It felt like… a smooth, gliding pulse…
Just then, hurried footsteps echoed down the corridor.
Duan Yeluo heard the familiar steps and looked up. Lu Xinghe’s figure came into view.
Lu Xinghe ran up and immediately saw a stranger touching Duan Yeluo’s hand. He was already anxious, and now he was even more confused about what was happening. His expression darkened as he walked over.
When he saw Duan Yeluo’s pale face and the bloodstains on his shirt, he didn’t care who the man beside him was. He knelt down in front of Duan Yeluo, anxiously grabbing his arm and examining him up and down. “What happened? Why is there blood on your clothes? You said you weren’t hurt! Where are you hurt?”
Duan Yeluo saw Lu Xinghe was terrified and explained, “It’s not my blood. It’s this gentleman’s partner’s. I ran into a situation where his partner was in labor, so I brought them to the hospital.”
Lu Xinghe suddenly let out a sigh of relief. He stood up and pulled Duan Yeluo into a hug, gently rubbing the back of his head. “As long as it’s not yours. You scared me to death.”
“Mr. Duan.”
Duan Yeluo turned his face, hearing Wen Yu call him. “Yes, Doctor Wen?”
“You’re pregnant,” Wen Yu said.
Duan Yeluo froze. Perhaps it was too sudden. After a moment, he seemed to process it, his eyes flashing. He tugged on Lu Xinghe’s coat, looked up at him, his throat tight, unable to speak.
Lu Xinghe was speechless. He subconsciously grabbed Duan Yeluo’s hand.
Both their minds went blank.
Wen Yu: “The pulse I just took was a huá mài (smooth, gliding pulse), which is the pulse of pregnancy.”
After a long pause, Duan Yeluo finally spoke. “…Then, I guess I should congratulate myself.”
