This Alpha Is So Devoted to His Wife - Chapter 22
After school, the metallic clanging of foils echoed in the fencing hall. The resounding noise seemed to convey the intensity of the force used, as if the mood was not very pleasant.
The club members had been training for a while and were now resting on the sidelines. They were not idle, their eyes fixed on the two people still practicing in the center of the hall.
The young man on the left side of the court was powerful with every thrust. He was ruthless and scored with every move, forcing his opponent, who was a head taller, to retreat step by step. If one paid close attention, they could almost feel a hint of personal frustration.
“Duan Yu Luo isn’t giving the captain any mercy at all. That thrust was so cool.”
“He’s been practicing since he was little. If he didn’t have a family business to inherit, he probably could have been a fencer. When Minister Wu Yi retired from the club, he recommended Duan Yu Luo. But since Duan Yu Luo didn’t have the time, it was Jiang Yichen’s turn.”
“I heard our captain likes Duan Yu Luo?”
“Ah, with that big demon around, does the captain dare to pursue him?”
“True. Otherwise, why would the captain suddenly call for a practice when Lu Xing He is gone? It’s a classic case of ‘the drunkard’s intention is not with the wine,’ he just wants to spend time with Duan Yu Luo.”
“But the captain can’t beat Duan Yu Luo. Duan Yu Luo’s fencing style is exactly like that big demon’s—they’re both ruthless.”
“Yeah. I tried sparring with Duan Yu Luo before. He’s really strong. Although this is supposed to be a gentleman’s sport, Duan Yu Luo and Lu Xing He are both strangely vicious with their foils.”
“You can’t say they’re the best friends and also the best rivals. Who would dare to practice with them normally? I wouldn’t.”
After the training, Duan Yu Luo put down his foil and took off his mask. Following fencing etiquette, he walked up to Jiang Yichen and shook his hand. But to his surprise, the guy held his hand and wouldn’t let go. A feeling of disgust surged, and his eyes darkened a bit.
“Little one, you’re as good as always,” Jiang Yichen said, holding Duan Yu Luo’s hand and complimenting him. “You’re worthy of being the person the former captain recommended.”
Duan Yu Luo heard Jiang Yichen call him that. “Captain, you can just call me by my name. ‘Little one’ is what my family calls me, and I’m not used to outsiders calling me that.” With that, he used a little force to pull his hand away. He turned around and packed up his gear with a blank expression.
He actually dared to call me that. If Lu Xing He were here, he would’ve punched him for sure.
“Oh, really? I heard Lu Xing He call you that and thought—”
“He is my family,” Duan Yu Luo interrupted Jiang Yichen’s arrogance. He finished packing his bag. “I have another class soon. I’m leaving.”
Jiang Yichen held his mask, watching Duan Yu Luo’s retreating figure. He really was a proud and elegant swan. Even when he was angry, he was still so polite. He smiled. “Tell me, do you think Duan Yu Luo will differentiate into an Omega?”
Duan Yu Luo went to the restroom and washed his hands thoroughly until they were almost red before leaving.
As he walked out, he saw his cousin, Jiang Nianqiao, standing against the wall with her arms crossed. He stopped in his tracks, a little surprised. “Qiao Qiao? You haven’t left yet? Didn’t Uncle come to pick you up today?”
Jiang Nianqiao walked up to Duan Yu Luo. The two were similar in height. She reached out and wrapped her arm around her handsome cousin’s shoulder, leading him outside. At the same time, she said sincerely, “Second brother, do you know what I just heard?”
“What?” Duan Yu Luo asked curiously.
“I just heard the other fencing club members say that there was no practice today. That Jiang Yichen called them all to train because of you,” Jiang Nianqiao said in a low voice. “He wants to pursue you. That guy is really greasy. You should spend less time with him now that Lu Xing He isn’t here.”
Duan Yu Luo hummed in agreement. His expression showed a hint of disgust. He looked at his hand, thinking about the feeling of the other person holding it just now. “He even called me ‘little one.’ Honestly, it gave me goosebumps.”
“Wha—” Jiang Nianqiao’s eyes widened.
Duan Yu Luo heard his sister’s reaction and tapped her on the head with his finger. “How many times have I told you, girls shouldn’t use words like that.”
Jiang Nianqiao couldn’t help but curse under her breath. “Second brother, if Lu Xing He knew, he’d beat him to death! Is he that familiar with him to call you that? So greasy! How can there be an 18-year-old greasy guy? Don’t get so close to him. He wants to pursue you? He should look at himself first. He’s a flirtatious scumbag!”
Listening to his sister’s complaints, a slight smile appeared on Duan Yu Luo’s lips.
“You’re still smiling?” Jiang Nianqiao saw that her second brother seemed to have no sense of danger. “You, you can be a little fiercer sometimes. Why be so polite? If someone disrespects you, be mean to them! Curse them! Hit them! Lu Xing He won’t be by your side forever. I wonder what you’ll do when Lu Xing He gets a girlfriend.”
Duan Yu Luo had felt a little better after his sister vented on his behalf, but he was a little depressed after hearing that last sentence.
He gave Jiang Nianqiao a long look.
“I’m just being honest. Lu Xing He will get a partner sooner or later. Don’t you know how old-fashioned and rigid his grandmother is? She might even arrange a partner for him and make him like girls.”
…
In the car, his dad, Luo Songran, noticed his son’s subtle change in mood. He was playing with the paper bunny in his hand.
He drove away from the school. He saw a silver-gray Bentley next to him and rolled down his window. His second brother, Yan Nanchen’s face, appeared.
“Grandpa wants us to go back home for dinner this weekend.”
“Okay.”
Both cars’ windows rolled back up at the same time.
“Dad.”
“What is it?”
Duan Yu Luo touched the paper bunny in his hand, feeling a little down. He looked at his dad, who was driving. “There’s a senior at school who seems to want to pursue me.”
His dad, Luo Songran, glanced at the paper bunny in his son’s hand and smiled. “Isn’t that a good thing? My son is so优秀, it’s normal for someone to like him. Did that girl give that to you?”
“Lu Xing He gave me this,” Duan Yu Luo said, remembering what Jiang Nianqiao had said earlier. “I don’t like that senior.”
“Then refuse him decisively.”
“I will.”
“If you’ve already made up your mind, then why are you still unhappy?”
The car slowly drove into the estate. The security guard stood at attention and saluted them.
Duan Yu Luo used his finger to pull at the paper bunny’s ears. “Dad, will Lu Xing He go back to D Country in the future?”
His dad’s thoughts suddenly jumped to Lu Xing He. This leap of thought made him feel like he couldn’t understand these kids. “It’s hard to say. It depends on them. You can ask Lu Xing He.”
“Lu Xing He’s grandma is so strict. Do you think his grandma will arrange a partner for him? Will she make him have a relationship with a female Omega?” Duan Yu Luo still couldn’t help but ask.
The car drove into the villa garage.
“Why don’t you ask Lu Xing He that question yourself?” His dad unbuckled his seatbelt. He wasn’t in a hurry to get out of the car. He put on some calming music and turned to his son, ready to have a chat.
“I…” Duan Yu Luo hesitated. In his nervousness, he accidentally tore the paper bunny’s ear. He was stunned for a few seconds. He carefully tried to press the ear back but found that it was really torn. A hint of sadness appeared in his eyes. “Should I ask him directly?”
“Yes. You’re curious, aren’t you? Besides, you’re such good friends, it’s normal to ask that question.”
Duan Yu Luo thought about it, lowered his eyes, and nodded. “That’s true. I can ask him directly.”
His dad, Luo Songran, smiled and rubbed his son’s head. “You have plenty of time. Think about it slowly. No need to rush.”
“Okay,” Duan Yu Luo said, lowering his head and starting to worry about the torn bunny ear.
“What did Xing Xing write for you?” His dad, Luo Songran, saw that his son was playing with the paper bunny, cherishing it. He was a little curious.
“He told me not to get into puppy love,” Duan Yu Luo said honestly. He saw that there was really no way to fix it, so he gave up. He’d go back and get some glue to fix it.
“And what else?”
Duan Yu Luo looked at his dad with clear eyes and a slight curve to his lips. “Nothing else.”
The pink and purple evening clouds filled the sky, and the light reflected off the car window, falling on the young man’s face as he lowered his eyes and smiled. His eyebrows and lips outlined the thoughts of a young man, looking as delicate as a watercolor painting.
His dad turned his face away and smiled, seeing through his thoughts but not saying anything. He rubbed his son’s head, turned off the engine, and opened the car door.
In the evening, Duan Yu Luo submitted his topic for the CTB competition to his tutor, including his reasons for wanting to do that topic. They talked online for almost an hour before ending the conversation.
He closed his laptop, opened a drawer, and took out the paper bunny. He used double-sided tape to reattach the left ear. He didn’t want Lu Xing He to suddenly ask if he had kept it safe and find out it was broken. Lu Xing He would lecture him for a long time.
Just then, his phone on the desk vibrated. The video call screen showed a star icon.
It was Lu Xing He.
He quickly pushed the paper bunny away before answering the call.
On the other side of the call, Lu Xing He’s face, still covered in water droplets, appeared. His broad shoulders were clearly visible, and his hair was messy and wet. He had clearly just finished swimming. It was nine o’clock at night here, and nine o’clock in the morning there.
“I’m done with my competition,” Lu Xing He said, picking up his phone and pointing the camera at the large ranking screen nearby.
A dozen names were listed on the LED screen. The name at the top, representing the five-star red flag, was XingHe Lu.
Duan Yu Luo’s eyes lit up when he saw that Lu Xing He had gotten first place. He immediately gave him a thumbs up. “You’re so amazing. You got first place again.”
Lu Xing He’s lips curved into a smile at the praise. He turned the camera back to himself. The towel was on his shoulder. He ran his hand through his messy, wet hair as he walked toward the rest area. “I’m flying back this afternoon. I should be back tomorrow morning. I’ll go straight back to school. Did anything happen at school today?”
“…No.”
“Okay, then something did happen.”
Duan Yu Luo was speechless. He got me.
“Duan Yu Luo, if you don’t tell me—”
“Jiang Yichen came to find me today. He told me to go to practice, and after practice, he held my hand really tight. He even called me ‘little one’,” Duan Yu Luo said in one breath before Lu Xing He could finish his sentence.
After he said that, he saw Lu Xing He looking at him in silence.
Duan Yu Luo sensed that Lu Xing He was mad. He leaned in and whispered, “I got mad at him. I told him not to call me that and that only you can call me that.”
The boy’s face on the phone screen was so close. His light brown eyes were clear, and his voice was soft and gentle. He was so well-behaved. It was as if this clean and handsome face filled his whole world. How could he be mad at him?
The thought of someone else plucking his rose that he had raised made him feel so annoyed from head to toe.
Lu Xing He calmed himself down. He held his phone and said with a serious and stern tone, “What did you get mad at him for? Is your temper for him to see? Who is he that you would get mad at him? I’m going to the awards ceremony now. Wait for me to come back.”
