Chapter 48: Elder Sister of a Brother-Obsessed Family X University Professor
Jiang Peifeng deliberately lingered in the bathroom for over half an hour. Only when she felt completely composed did she quietly open the bathroom door.
To her surprise, the little white flower in the room was probably too tired from playing all day, as she was already asleep, clutching the quilt.
They had booked a twin room. Ruan Jiyun had chosen the bed closer to the wall, wrapped up tightly in the soft duvet, sleeping soundly facing the wall.
The person I spent half the night agonizing over how to face… is just… asleep? Jiang Peifeng suddenly wanted to laugh, but she admitted that the day at the theme park had been exhausting. With that thought, she reached up and turned off the main light, leaving only a small nightlight on.
The warm, yellow light immediately made the atmosphere in the room gentle. In the glow, her girl slept peacefully, her long hair draped on the pillow, illuminated with a soft, downy texture. This was just like the feeling she exuded: soft, with the innocent naiveté of a small animal.
In fact, just staying by her side, watching her grow up happily, is something worth looking forward to.
Jiang Peifeng watched her quietly. After a long moment, she turned around to change into her pajamas.
What she didn’t know was that Ruan Jiyun, behind her, had quietly opened her eyes.
The moment Jiang Peifeng came out of the bathroom, Ruan Jiyun subconsciously pulled the quilt over herself.
Her heart was pounding nervously. Perhaps the evening atmosphere was too sensual, making her anticipate if anything else might happen. But she quickly dismissed the thought—after all, she didn’t know how to handle such a situation.
If Jiang Peifeng hugged her again, she would be very willing. Or, if it went one step further, would she kiss her?
The thought made Ruan Jiyun feel completely giddy.
She heard the sound of the lights being turned off. Jiang Peifeng’s footsteps were very light, padding on the carpet as she approached the bedside. Then she stopped beside Ruan Jiyun.
Opening her eyes now would be too strange. Ruan Jiyun could only keep her eyes tightly shut, trying her best to control her breathing as if she were completely unaware.
After a long while, the footsteps receded. She quietly opened her eyes, cautiously turning her head.
The nightlight was very soft, the halo of light appearing hazy. She saw a section of white bath robe slowly falling, landing near the edge of the bed, followed by smooth, fair skin. A graceful, flowing curve dipped along her spine. In her breath, she suddenly caught the subtle, ever-present scent of the body wash.
The fragrance carried a warm, steamy air. That heat seemed to raise the temperature of the entire room. In this haze, Ruan Jiyun felt even dizzier.
The fabric rubbed against the sheets, making a faint sound that was amplified a hundredfold, resonating with the beat of her heart, echoing loudly.
In September, the tree shadows were dense and thick.
As previously agreed, Jiang Peifeng was driving Ruan Jiyun to the university. Since Ruan Jiyun was admitted to CST, Ruan’s father and mother had gained considerable prestige among their neighbors. Perhaps out of fear of gossip, they no longer dared to overtly mistreat Ruan Jiyun. The summer vacation had passed peacefully.
The car stopped downstairs at the familiar residential complex. Jiang Peifeng saw the slightly excited figure of the little white flower running out of the building, followed by Ruan’s father and mother.
“We have to trouble Xiao Jiang again,” Cheng Nuoe said, rubbing her hands and smiling politely. “Yesterday, I even said she should just take the train to A City. As a child from an ordinary family like ours, she can’t be someone who can’t handle hardship just because she’s going to university.”
Jiang Peifeng offered a good-natured smile: “It’s on my way anyway, Auntie Cheng, don’t worry about it.”
She reached out to take Ruan Jiyun’s luggage and noticed that apart from a single well-used travel bag, Ruan Jiyun had nothing else.
“I heard that daily necessities are provided at the university, so I didn’t prepare too much. Besides, it’s difficult to carry,” Cheng Nuoe quickly explained. “If you need anything, tell your mother later, and we’ll mail it to you, or we might even take Jiabao to A City to visit you.”
Perhaps the last sentence is the key point? Jiang Peifeng smiled. She didn’t expect these parents to suddenly see the light. She could just take Ruan Jiyun shopping for anything she needed once they arrived in A City.
Cheng Nuoe continued to chatter at her daughter: “You must remember what your father and mother told you. Don’t cause trouble at school. Oh, right… ask your Sister Xiao Jiang later to see if she can introduce you to a part-time job… I know that the more famous the university, the higher the pay for tutoring…”
Ruan Jiyun nodded silently. Jiang Peifeng had already put the things in the trunk and walked over, smiling: “Uncle and Auntie, it’s getting late. We should get going now in case the highway gets jammed.”
After saying goodbye to Ruan’s father and mother, she started the car and smoothly turned onto the main road.
When they were alone, she felt the girl beside her let out a noticeable sigh of relief.
“You don’t have to follow everything your mother says,” she said cautiously, holding the steering wheel with one hand. “You only need to focus on studying. Taking care of the family is not your concern yet. Only by mastering your skills first will you have a better future. Did you remember that?”
Ruan Jiyun nodded hard. As the car slowly drove away from the area around her home, her heart felt like it was breaking free from certain constraints. The people who made her afraid and stressed were now far away. Although an invisible line still connected them, the feeling of fear was ultimately partially dissolved by the distance.
Will this feeling be different when I grow older and become more capable?
She anticipated this with expectation.
In the afternoon, they arrived at Chengjing University of Science and Technology.
CST was a century-old renowned university. The campus was shaded by trees everywhere. The white, antique-style buildings were nestled within the foliage, giving off a fresh, scholarly atmosphere. The welcoming area was already bustling with crowds: excited freshmen, beaming seniors, all converging into a warm torrent.
Jiang Peifeng proactively grabbed the luggage bag and led Ruan Jiyun to register. She quickly spotted an acquaintance and waved with a smile.
Ruan Jiyun saw the male staff member at the reception desk almost immediately stand up and enthusiastically greet Jiang Peifeng: “Senior Sister, what makes you decide to come visit us?”
“You wish. I’m here on a mission today,” Jiang Peifeng smiled, gesturing to Ruan Jiyun in front of her. “Ruan Jiyun, your junior schoolmate. Keep a good eye on her for me, alright?”
The young man looked at the delicate and charming girl in front of him, scratched his head, and said: “I’m telling you, with the way the junior sister looks, if she stands here for three seconds, the pack of wolves in the Computer Science department will rush over to help.”
“That’s why I came to you,” Jiang Peifeng said seriously. “This is my little girl. I only trust you to help.”
The young man laughed heartily, took Ruan Jiyun’s acceptance letter and documents, and personally went to help her with the formalities.
Jiang Peifeng then instructed Ruan Jiyun: “…Be a good girl yourself. If you encounter anything you can’t solve, you can always find me. I’ll go see your dorm in a bit. We’ll go shopping for anything you’re missing this afternoon.” She chose her words carefully: “If a boy tries to be attentive, don’t think that because you are a woman, you owe them anything, but you also don’t have to feel obligated to respond either.”
Ruan Jiyun’s heart was fluttering sweetly because of the phrase “my little girl.” Hearing the advice, she immediately said: “I don’t need their help!”
She promised strongly: “I can do everything myself. If I really run into trouble… I, I’ll call you.”
Her voice was still slightly weak in the end.
Jiang Peifeng smiled at her, reaching out to pat her head: “Good girl.”
The Computer Science department had slightly fewer girls than boys, so the dorm environment was better. It was a new building with six people per room, designed with beds above desks. By the time Jiang Peifeng and Ruan Jiyun arrived, there were already three or four students and parents busy inside.
Ruan Jiyun had never been good at social interaction. She followed behind Jiang Peifeng, watching her greet the parents and then take out beautifully packaged imported chocolates and other small snacks that girls liked, distributing them one by one. Meanwhile, she introduced Ruan Jiyun to her roommates.
The girls were all lively and generous, greeting each other kindly. The one with the roundest face, who looked the youngest, proactively said: “There’s an empty bed by the window here. Do you want to take this one?”
Ruan Jiyun looked at Jiang Peifeng first. Seeing only an encouraging look from her, she nodded and said: “Okay, I’ll take this spot.”
When they started making the bed, they found that the quilt provided by the school was an all-season type, and since the weather was still quite warm, this quilt seemed a bit too thick.
A parent enthusiastically said: “The ‘Autumn Tiger’ in A City is very strong. It will probably stay hot until after National Day this year. It’s good to prepare an air-conditioning blanket, which is much lighter.”
Jiang Peifeng agreed, nodding: “We’ll go buy one later.”
She had already looked at the beds of the other girls and saw that most of them had also prepared their own bedsheets, nightlights, and other items. It was a good reminder to get some for the little white flower too.
While she patiently asked the parents about necessary purchases, the girls on the other side started chatting. The round-faced girl said with envy: “Is that your sister? She’s so beautiful.”
Standing among a group of parents, the tall Jiang Peifeng was indeed eye-catching. She possessed a mixture of youthful brilliance and mature feminine composure. Perhaps sensing Ruan Jiyun and the others’ gaze, she turned her head and smiled in good spirits.
Ruan Jiyun blushed. A moment later, a subtle feeling of jealousy arose. She felt that the smile wasn’t just for her alone.
When Jiang Peifeng walked over again, Ruan Jiyun bravely took her hand: “Shall we go shopping? I’m a little hungry.”
Jiang Peifeng immediately patted her head: “You must be hungry. Let’s go then. How about I take you for Japanese food?”
Ruan Jiyun replied softly and happily: “Okay.”
The little sense of loss in her heart seemed to instantly vanish. Jiang Peifeng’s thoughtful and gentle indulgence belonged only to her.
