- Chapter 94 - United in Heart and Spirit, Growing Old Together, Until the End of Life
For a patient who needed bed rest, Qin Yan wasn’t entirely sure what level of complexity in entertainment would be appropriate.
“Let’s skip the complicated stuff. Your brain needs more rest right now,” she said, holding the tablet in one hand and offering a peeled apple to Xia Mingtang.
Xia Mingtang took a bite from the apple while holding Qin Yan’s hand, chewing a couple of times before expressing a delayed sense of dissatisfaction.
“I’m stuck in bed all day and can’t move around. And now you won’t even let me use the tablet? That leaves me with no entertainment at all.”
“Good girl. After you finish this apple, I’ll find you something new and fun to do,” Qin Yan said, caressing the back of Xia Mingtang’s head with one hand while holding the apple in the other.
Her head bandages had been removed, but there was still a scar at the back of her head, hidden beneath her hair.
Xia Mingtang slightly shook her head in discomfort, weighed between insisting on her point and finishing the apple for a moment, then finally grinned and bit a huge chunk from the apple.
The apple was large, and halfway through, Xia Mingtang hiccupped.
Qin Yan noticed and quickly ate the remaining half, using a tissue to wipe her hands.
Xia Mingtang, taken aback by Qin Yan’s natural manner, paused for a second before returning to her thoughts.
“My entertainment.”
True to her word, Qin Yan pulled out a deck of playing cards.
Xia Mingtang’s eyes lit up, but her head still throbbed slightly.
“Do you really think playing cards is more relaxing for my brain than watching shows?”
Qin Yan shook the cards in her hand, “I can tell your fortune. You just need to draw the cards, no brainwork required.”
It was a way to pass the time. Xia Mingtang was half skeptical.
“Fortune telling? You have this skill too?”
“You’ll know if you try.”
She spread the cards in her hand, back-facing Xia Mingtang.
“Go ahead, draw three cards from here.”
Xia Mingtang drew three cards: the 3 of spades, 6 of spades, and 8 of spades.
Seeing this, Xia Mingtang’s heart skipped a beat. Although she had never had experience using playing cards for fortune-telling, she vaguely knew that red cards represented good luck, and black cards represented misfortune.
All black. Perfectly aligned.
Qin Yan studied the cards, thinking for a few seconds before speaking:
“These three cards represent your past, present, and future.
“Spades are the opposite of hearts. Hearts symbolize simple, pure emotions, while spades represent complicated, entangled emotions.
“Judging from the cards, your relationships with the closest people in your life have always been complicated, not entirely pure.
“And the complexity appears to increase gradually according to the card values.”
Really?
Xia Mingtang tilted her head, thinking this made sense to some extent.
As a child, her closest person had been her mother, but her mother didn’t seem to truly like her.
After her mother passed away, her grandmother took care of her. She felt filial and grateful but sometimes couldn’t help feeling some resentment. Her irritating father, combined with her grandmother’s overindulgence, didn’t help.
As she grew older, Qin Yan was the first to stir her emotions.
She was willing to marry Qin Yan but didn’t exactly love her purely—once even attempting to escape. Yet when the opportunity came, she softened and returned.
Looking back, her relationships with the closest people in her life had indeed been complicated.
Seeing Xia Mingtang quiet for a moment, Qin Yan extended the cards toward her.
“That was your short-term future. To see your ultimate fortune, you’ll need to draw more cards.”
Ultimate fortune?
Dizzy from her injuries, Xia Mingtang let Qin Yan lead.
She drew the 10 of spades, and Qin Yan interpreted quickly:
“The complexity of your emotions continues to deepen.”
Next, the 5 of clubs appeared. Qin Yan paused:
“The original spade was like a small grass, now it has grown into a sapling. This shows that you are gradually forming countless connections with the world.”
Xia Mingtang thought: Does that mean I had no connection with the world before?
She didn’t argue, curious to see what else Qin Yan could make up.
She drew five more black cards in succession. Each revealed either increasingly complicated emotions or fluctuating connections with the world.
She could almost memorize Qin Yan’s interpretations.
Rubbing her sore arm, she decided to stop after drawing the next card.
But when she drew another card, Qin Yan’s eyes lit up:
“Here it is! Your ultimate fortune—Ace of Hearts!”
Qin Yan held the card, explaining earnestly:
“After experiencing complex emotions and countless connections with the world, you will finally meet your true partner.
“The one holding the Ace of Hearts will fully enter your life. You will share a life together, united in heart and spirit, growing old together until the end of your days.”
Xia Mingtang looked at Qin Yan’s sparkling eyes and realized the trick—she had orchestrated this entire card sequence.
Suppressing a smile, she teased, “Ace of Hearts? I’ve had dozens of card partners since childhood, maybe even hundreds.”
Qin Yan, slightly flustered, replied, “Those were during games. Only the Ace of Hearts drawn during divination counts.”
Got it. No acting needed here.
“Oh? But you didn’t say which card is the ultimate fortune,” Xia Mingtang tilted her head.
“The final interpretation belongs to the diviner,” Qin Yan said, placing the Ace of Hearts in Xia Mingtang’s hand.
Seeing Xia Mingtang about to speak, she pinched the thinner face shaped by the hospital stay.
“You’re a patient. Rest well and don’t strain your brain. This is your true partner—keep it safe.”
Xia Mingtang’s face was pinched on both sides as she held the Ace of Hearts in a daze.
What was she about to say again?
Xia Mingtang continued her worry-free, leisurely days in the hospital, with Qin Yan keeping her company so it wasn’t too boring.
After a few days of rest, she finally received the doctor’s approval to resume some normal activities.
Qin Yan carefully helped her up from bed and asked if she wanted to walk in the hospital courtyard.
Xia Mingtang touched her greasy hair, openly disgusted with herself.
“No, I’ll shower first.”
Lying in bed for days had left her waves of hair frizzy, and the shaved patch over the scar was obvious.
The scar annoyed her so much that she nearly wanted to exact revenge on whoever caused it.
Annoyed, she felt her head throb and hurriedly dashed toward the shower.
The VIP ward had a private bathroom, not as luxurious as home but very clean.
Although her body could now move, her mind was still foggy.
Seeing the showerhead felt like a long-awaited oasis. She turned it on and got drenched—unsurprisingly.
Qin Yan arrived to see her like a soaked chicken.
She had wanted to suggest using the bathtub at home later, but now it was impossible to avoid.
Xia Mingtang looked stunned as Qin Yan turned off the water.
Lying in bed for so long really lowered one’s IQ.
Qin Yan quickly brought a chair for her to sit on, and even faster, fetched clean clothes and placed them on the bathroom shelf.
She closed the door and naturally began unbuttoning Xia Mingtang’s hospital gown.
Realizing it, Xia Mingtang blushed—she had intended to bathe herself.
Since their marriage, Qin Yan often bathed her, usually in more intimate ways.
Even if she wasn’t always willing, she had grown accustomed, so this shouldn’t have embarrassed her.
Yet after Qin Yan’s amnesia, their interactions had shifted.
The dynamic had changed from intense passion to something more innocent.
Yes, pure love.
Xia Mingtang never thought she’d describe their relationship with that term.
But eighteen-year-old Qin Yan seemed much different from before—more adorable.
Xia Mingtang was surprised she could even think of Qin Yan as cute.
If thirty-one-year-old Qin Yan brought physical intimacy, eighteen-year-old Qin Yan brought genuine joy and shyness.
How could this be? Surely she wasn’t… attracted to children?
Her sudden thought scared her and made her head ache.
“Ow~”
“Is the water too hot?”
Qin Yan squatted, holding the showerhead in one hand and supporting her wavy hair with the other, meeting her gaze.
“No, it’s fine.” Xia Mingtang, seeing herself half-naked, averted her eyes.
Qin Yan found her blushing adorable, stole a quick kiss, and immediately resumed a serious expression.
“If you feel cold or hot, just tell me. Making my wife comfortable is my mission.”
Xia Mingtang softly replied, “Mm,” noticing something slightly strange about that statement.
