- Chapter 93 - Just a Little Bit, and I Would Have Gone to Heaven
This time, Qin Yan really went overboard—more than last time.
The next morning, Xia Mingtang woke up to find that the uncontrollable troublemaker from last night was gone.
This made her feel a little annoyed.
After washing up, she went to the living room, where breakfast was already laid out.
Xia Mingtang reached for the milk and noticed a sticky note on the cup.
In flamboyant, colorful handwriting, accompanied by a silly smiley face, it read:
“A new day, full of energy, love your wife ^_^”
Xia Mingtang expressionlessly peeled the note off and put it in her pocket, ready to continue eating.
However, she soon realized that every single plate had a sticky note attached.
The colors varied, the cheesy messages updated and iterated, but the only constant was the ugly little smiley face at the end.
“Childish,” Xia Mingtang muttered.
She collected all the notes and decided to temporarily forgive the person for disappearing right after “doing their thing” last night.
At 9:00 a.m., Xia Mingtang arrived at the West District factory construction site as scheduled.
Thanks to yesterday’s incentive policy, all the workers were full of energy.
Entrusted by her grandmother, Xia Mingtang didn’t dare slack off and methodically inspected the site.
After a full round, she found no problems—which actually should be the normal situation.
Relieved, she took out her phone to check messages.
Sure enough, in just a few hours, her chat box had been bombarded again.
Troublesome Teen: Dug out to the company so early, didn’t even get to hug my wife properly, unhappy ╭(╯^╰)╮
Troublesome Teen: Did you see the breakfast I prepared for you? Though I didn’t get to make it myself, the love is real ~o( =∩ω∩= )m
Troublesome Teen: I can sneak out in two hours, want me to pick you up from the factory? What should we eat for lunch?
Troublesome Teen: Are you busy now? It’s okay, you don’t need to reply. Just accept my kiss. mua! (*╯3╰)
…
Xia Mingtang looked at this pile of essentially useless messages but still patiently typed out her replies one character at a time.
Her long, slender nails, recently trimmed smooth and neat, lightly grazed the screen. She had just tidied them in the car—not for any particular reason, just thinking that next time… if something happened… she wouldn’t be so passive.
“Miss Xia,”
Just as she sent a message, someone called her over.
Xia Mingtang turned and saw a factory worker approaching.
The worker, in uniform, greeted enthusiastically: “Our section is about to be completed. Do you want to come up and see? The view is really good.”
Xia Mingtang, there to inspect progress, didn’t mind the slight boasting.
Following the worker’s direction, she walked toward a nearby platform and leaned on the railing to look down.
This area was the factory’s raw materials storage zone, already about 80–90% complete—just some finishing work left.
The platform she stood on was temporary, built for workers’ convenience, and would be removed after completion.
The wooden boards under her feet were a little loose. Wearing mid-heeled leather shoes, she was not very stable, so she held the railing to step back.
Unexpectedly, when she applied pressure to the railing, the plastic railing collapsed like paper.
With no support, Xia Mingtang lost her balance, stepped into a gap in the platform, and fell straight down.
Instinctively, she curled up to protect her vital areas.
Pain shot through her hands and back as she lost consciousness.
When Xia Mingtang woke again, the strong scent of disinfectant hit her nose.
Groggily opening her eyes, she saw Qin Yan’s reddened eyes.
Her raven-black hair, neglected for some time, appeared messy.
“Qin…”
She tried to speak but found her throat terribly dry.
Even this tiny sound was noticed by Qin Yan, who looked anxious but hesitant to touch her injured wife.
She pressed the call button and leaned close to the bedside, both concerned and cautious.
“You’re awake. Does anywhere hurt?”
Xia Mingtang parted her lips but could barely manage a word:
“Pain.”
Hearing this, Qin Yan felt a sharper ache herself. Fortunately, the doctor and nurse arrived quickly; otherwise, the young couple might have burst into tears right there.
The doctor checked Xia Mingtang and breathed a sigh of relief:
“The patient is out of life-threatening danger but still weak. She needs proper care. I’ll prescribe recovery medication. If anything is needed, call us anytime. Also, for the first four hours after waking, no water; you can use a wet cotton swab to wipe her lips.”
Xia Mingtang listened expressionlessly, lying in bed.
When she heard “no water”, her usually bright and agile eyes drooped as if she was about to cry.
Seeing her pitiful look, Qin Yan, if not for the presence of the medical staff, would have immediately comforted her with kisses.
After sending the doctor away, Qin Yan dutifully took on the role of nurse.
Xia Mingtang had been unconscious for three days; Qin Yan worked remotely on her laptop in the hospital the entire time.
Since Xia Mingtang had first returned to Rong City, people tended to nag her gently—but after Xia Mingtang had thrown a tantrum three days ago, everyone treated her with respect and didn’t dare fuss anymore.
Xia Mingtang let Qin Yan use the wet cotton swab on her lips. Although speaking was inconvenient, she stubbornly extended a hand from under the blanket.
Qin Yan quickly held it.
Xia Mingtang traced her fingers slowly across Qin Yan’s palm, sending a slight tickle.
Qin Yan was momentarily distracted but quickly realized Xia Mingtang was trying to communicate this way.
Writing slowly, Xia Mingtang spelled out words one by one, and Qin Yan could clearly understand.
“Grandma?”
Before Xia Mingtang could finish the question mark, Qin Yan anticipated the meaning and reassured her:
“You were unconscious for three whole days, right next to Grandma’s hospital room. She came by during the day but I persuaded her to rest. Don’t worry, she’s healthier than you.”
Hearing this, Xia Mingtang finally relaxed.
She continued writing in Qin Yan’s palm:
“Not an accident.”
Qin Yan’s expression stiffened as she repeated the last word.
This fall, unlike ordinary accidents, had occurred on a temporary platform at the construction site. While falls are common there, Qin Yan checked the surveillance footage: no one else was around.
Holding Xia Mingtang’s hand solemnly, Qin Yan said:
“Don’t worry. I will catch whoever tried to hurt you.”
In the following days, besides bedside care, Qin Yan investigated everyone who had entered or exited the factory on the day of the accident.
Cross-checking logs and statements, she noticed something suspicious.
A worker who was present when Xia Mingtang fell never returned to work.
Qin Yan traced him to his home—a dilapidated apartment—but it was already empty.
Neighbors confirmed he had moved out recently.
Who ordered this? Such a clumsy method… or maybe they were too arrogant, thinking moving away would erase all traces?
Even someone with no connections can’t easily disappear, but thankfully, Qin Yan had Xie An to assist.
With a direction in mind, Qin Yan felt less anxious. Whoever dared to harm her wife would surely pay a painful price.
Now sitting by the hospital bed, Qin Yan peeled an apple into one continuous long strip, thinking about how she’d tear the culprit to pieces, yet her face remained gentle.
Xia Mingtang, now past the no-food-and-water period, could eat porridge and fruit without problem.
Her beautiful head wrapped in thick bandages, she leaned back in bed watching a TV show on the tablet, but her mind wasn’t on the screen.
She had narrowly escaped sharp objects by just three centimeters and instinctively protected her vital areas—her hands and back were most seriously injured.
Just a little bit, and I would have gone to heaven.
Accustomed to being arrogant and domineering, Xia Mingtang had enemies, but she had never faced someone trying to kill her.
At twenty-four, she truly understood the malice of human hearts.
Her head throbbed, unable to figure out who might want her dead.
Qin Yan looked up, noticing Xia Mingtang wincing in pain.
She quickly put down the fruit knife and supported Xia Mingtang’s head.
“Headache? Are you not following the doctor’s instructions again?”
“Not on purpose,” Xia Mingtang replied stubbornly. “It’s just… this plot is too complicated, gave me a headache.”
Qin Yan glanced at the tablet. The show playing was Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf. Complicated plot, really?
