- Chapter 82 - You’re being fickle, inconsistent, and changing your mind by the hour
The Lucky Cat Café was located in the new district of Su City. Since it was a weekday morning, there weren’t too many customers.
Three beautiful women sat around a square table by the glass window. From a distance, they looked like they were happily chatting away.
After placing her order, Xia Huaying returned to the table, her demeanor once again mature and refined.
She was the one who had invited them out, and she carried herself with the full composure of a host.
“This café’s signature latte has a mild flavor and is always highly rated online. Miss Qin, you should give it a try.
“As for Xiaxia, I ordered a strawberry latte, since she prefers something sweet.”
“Thank you. How did you know I love strawberries the most?” The moment Xia Huaying finished speaking, Qin Yan reached out and took that pink latte for herself.
With a spoon, Qin Yan stirred the cup, breaking apart the little white heart drawn in the foam, then scooped up a spoonful to taste.
“The flavor is indeed good. Boss Xia, you have excellent taste.”
Before coming here, Xia Mingtang had given Qin Yan a brief introduction of her friend. Yet now, Qin Yan was chatting as if she had known Xia Huaying for years.
Xia Huaying froze for a split second, then quickly returned a polite smile. “I’m glad Miss Qin likes it.”
At the side, Xia Mingtang shot Qin Yan a glare but didn’t say anything, quietly taking the café’s classic latte for herself instead.
Xia Huaying’s gaze lingered on the two of them. Something about them didn’t match her usual impression of newlyweds. But then again, looking at how young Xia Mingtang seemed, they couldn’t possibly be an “old married couple” either.
Her curiosity got the better of her, though she asked in a roundabout way.
“I recall Xiaxia mentioning she came to Su City to live on her own for a while. I didn’t expect you two to already be married at such a young age.
“And Miss Qin, you’re really quite open-minded—to let your wife live alone for so long.”
Those words made both women pause mid-sip and exchange glances.
The backstory was far too complicated for Xia Mingtang to explain in a few sentences, so she just laughed it off.
“We’re both adults. There’s no such thing as ‘allowing’ or ‘not allowing.’ Besides, she’s always busy with work.”
That topic could have ended there—but Qin Yan wasn’t satisfied. Instead, she decided to add some drama of her own.
She reached over and held Xia Mingtang’s hand, gazing at her with such tender affection that her eyes practically glued themselves to her. Yet the words she spoke were directed at Xia Huaying
“You’re absolutely right, Boss Xia. My Tangtang is adored wherever she goes. Leaving her alone, of course I’d be terribly uneasy.
“So, as soon as I wrapped up my work, I rushed over without delay.
“And I’ve heard how kindly you’ve been looking after her all this time. For that, I’m truly grateful.”
Her words were so syrupy that even someone as vain and dramatic as Xia Mingtang got goosebumps.
As for Shang Huayin, who had never witnessed such theatrics before, she could barely keep her composure. She downed her coffee in one gulp and forced a smile.
“There’s really no need to be so polite. Xiaxia has helped me a great deal as well.
“Seeing the two of you so deeply in love, I can’t help but feel a bit envious.”
After that came the usual polite small talk. The coffee meetup didn’t last too long.
When Shang Huayin went to settle the bill, the cashier told her that Qin Yan had already paid earlier. She smiled faintly, didn’t make a fuss, and simply waved goodbye before leaving.
The moment Xia Huaying drove away, Xia Mingtang’s face turned cold. Without a word, she stormed out of the café.
Even she couldn’t miss it—Qin Yan had been deliberately making things difficult for Shang Huayin, staking her claim in every subtle (and not-so-subtle) way.
Qin Yan had always been overbearing, but Xia Mingtang hadn’t expected her to be the same even with amnesia.
If she hadn’t worried about Qin Yan slipping up and revealing too much, she wouldn’t have held back this long.
She walked quickly, but Qin Yan’s long legs caught up easily, her face all innocent.
“What’s wrong with you?”
Xia Mingtang didn’t slow down. “The question is, what’s wrong with you? Just now, every word out of your mouth was dripping with sarcasm.”
Realizing the issue, Qin Yan answered without hesitation as she trailed after her.
“I wasn’t being sarcastic. I was stating facts—with just a bit of artistic exaggeration. My goal was to make anyone eyeing my wife back off.”
Hearing her say this with such childlike earnestness, Xia Mingtang’s expression grew complicated. She simply kept walking forward.
Qin Yan rushed to keep up, speaking without thinking.
“Aren’t you my wife? And yet you allow another woman to show affection toward you. That’s being fickle, inconsistent, and changing your mind by the hour!”
Xia Mingtang almost laughed from sheer exasperation. She stopped, turned to look her straight in the eye, and enunciated each word:
“Qin Yan, I believe I already told you before—we’re supposed to be getting a divorce.”
At that, Qin Yan’s face crumpled, on the verge of tears. “So you really do like that auntie!”
Xia Mingtang: “???”
What kind of twisted logic was that? Did this woman even understand human speech?
When Xia Mingtang didn’t respond, Qin Yan’s sense of grievance only grew. She bit her lip, stomped her foot, and turned to run.
She ran!
She really ran!
She was gone!
Watching her disappear like the wind, Xia Mingtang felt a whole herd of wild beasts stampede through her chest.
She hesitated a few seconds, debating whether to call out after her, but the girl was already out of sight.
And she’s the one feeling wronged now?
Xia Mingtang sighed deeply and took a cab back home.
For once, the usually pampered young miss was surprisingly industrious.
She tossed all the clothes she’d meant to send to the dry cleaner into the decorative washing machine, then cleaned the apartment thoroughly from top to bottom.
Still restless, she went to the supermarket and stocked up on groceries until the fridge was bursting.
And then came the problem—she couldn’t cook.
She glanced up at the clock on the wall. It was already 9 p.m., and Qin Yan still hadn’t returned.
Earlier, she had tried calling, but Qin Yan’s phone was switched off.
Could she have gotten lost?
Probably not. She had her phone, and with her learning ability, even using GPS navigation shouldn’t be a problem.
But… could she have been kidnapped?
Again, unlikely. Even though her mind was like a ten-year-old’s, she still looked like an adult and didn’t talk much—hardly an easy target.
But what if she wasn’t mistaken for a child, but instead got caught up in trafficking of women?
There had been recent news reports about how dangerous it was for women living alone in the city.
When Xia Mingtang had first arrived in Su City, at least she had Yang Fan, a local neighbor, to guide her. But Qin Yan?
The more Xia Mingtang thought, the more worried she became.
Divorce or no divorce, if something happened to Qin Yan while she was amnesiac and under her watch, her conscience would never forgive her.
Sigh, having too much of a moral compass really is exhausting.
After convincing herself, Xia Mingtang grabbed her coat and headed out the door.
