- Chapter 60 - Feeling Like I’m Falling Apart
Previously, Xia Mingtang had rushed down the mountain and hadn’t realized how long she had been walking.
Now, Qin Yan was carrying her, step by step, back up the mountain. The path seemed endlessly long.
The night wind blew gently, bringing a refreshing chill.
The person beside her made her feel afraid, yet there was also a sense of warmth.
Xia Mingtang wanted to pull away, but at the same time, fearing she might fall, she had no choice but to instinctively wrap her arms around Qin Yan’s neck.
Her heart was filled with contradictions and confusion, yet Qin Yan began speaking at this moment.
“Tang Tang, look. Those twin symbiotic stars in the sky are lighting the path ahead of us.”
“Symbiotic stars?” Xia Mingtang was puzzled. What kind of strange stars were those?
Qin Yan lowered her gaze and looked at her, lips parting slightly.
“You once told me back in Yun Town that a single star was a solitary star, but when paired with another small star, shining together, they become symbiotic stars. Each contains a part of the other—they’ve never truly been apart.”
Really?
It had been a while, and Xia Mingtang thought for a few seconds. She vaguely remembered that she had watched the stars with Qin Yan back then and talked about constellations.
She hadn’t expected that her casual, offhand words would be remembered to this day.
Xia Mingtang sheepishly admitted, “Well, actually, I was just making it up back then. There’s no such thing as symbiotic stars in this world.”
“But I believed you.”
Qin Yan’s gaze darkened, and she held Xia Mingtang even tighter.
“I believe that symbiotic stars really exist in this world. They’ll always be together, forever.”
The sudden tightening of her embrace made Xia Mingtang slightly uncomfortable. She looked at this suddenly idealistic person, not daring to argue.
“Okay, okay, if you say they exist, they exist. But could you loosen your grip a bit? It’s kinda tight.”
Qin Yan pressed her lips together, saying nothing, arms locked like iron.
The more Xia Mingtang struggled, the tighter the hold became.
Facing such an unreasonable Qin Yan, she didn’t dare to move and soon became compliant.
Finally, they returned to the tent at the top of the mountain. Qin Yan set her down, and a strong, intoxicating smell hit them immediately.
The person had opened the tent hours ago and left it ventilating—without care.
Xia Mingtang frowned and complained in a delicate voice, “I don’t want to stay in here. It smells—it’s uncomfortable.”
Qin Yan, however, liked this smell. It was the scent of the little fox only present under her care.
But as long as it didn’t violate any principles, she was always attentive to this high-maintenance little lady.
So she opened the curtains, sprayed some air freshener, and carried Xia Mingtang into the RV, setting her on the sofa.
Then she went to the small kitchen and quickly returned with a thermal lunch box, handing it to Xia Mingtang.
“You haven’t eaten in hours. Try my cooking.”
Xia Mingtang opened the box. Steam rose from the freshly cooked barbecue, its colors bright and appetizing.
Hungry as she was, she didn’t bother with politeness and picked up a peeled shrimp, its exterior crisp and fragrant, tasting delicious.
Xia Mingtang wasn’t talkative while eating, but Qin Yan was skilled at reading her small expressions to understand her preferences.
The little fox squinted slightly, constantly picking food, clearly enjoying it.
Qin Yan’s gaze was too intense, making Xia Mingtang a little uneasy.
She swallowed a mushroom and politely asked, “Did you eat yet?”
“Not yet.” Qin Yan lied a little. During cooking, she had already sampled plenty.
Seeing the box filled with food, Xia Mingtang thought she couldn’t finish it alone, and said,
“Then come eat with me.”
Qin Yan took a pair of chopsticks and sat next to her, sharing the food.
They were so close that looking down risked bumping into each other.
Xia Mingtang felt uncomfortable. “Is there another box?”
“There was originally.” Qin Yan swallowed a small potato and licked her lips. “But the other boxes have fruit now, to preserve them.”
Xia Mingtang thought for a moment and didn’t insist, focusing on the barbecue in front of her, adhering to her principle of eating in silence.
Actually, Qin Yan wasn’t very hungry—she was just using this opportunity to get close to her little fox.
A few times when their heads lowered, soft fur brushed against her cheek, tickling and warm, making her heart feel soft and fluttery, anticipating the night ahead.
Xia Mingtang had no idea, focusing only on her meal.
Soon, the box was empty. She wiped her mouth with a napkin, rubbed her belly, and sighed in contentment.
She wanted to get up, forgetting about her ankle injury.
“Ouch~”
As she stepped down, the pain shot through her, and she fell back onto the sofa.
Qin Yan took the box from her hands, placed it on the table, removed her sandal, and gently pressed her jade-like fingers onto the swollen ankle.
“Here?”
“Mm.” Xia Mingtang withdrew her foot slightly, feigning strength. “Do you have any medicine? I’ll just apply it myself.”
Qin Yan fetched the first aid kit and took out an ointment.
Xia Mingtang reached out to take it, but Qin Yan sat on the sofa, placing the injured foot on her lap.
“Applying ointment directly won’t work. We need to massage first, then ice it to reduce swelling.”
Originally, she said this without any ulterior motive.
But as soon as the word “massage” came out, Xia Mingtang shivered.
Just a few hours ago, massage had led to…
Qin Yan looked up and met her gaze, her eyes deep and unreadable.
Both of them immediately recalled somewhat impure memories.
“No… no need, I… I can do it myself.” Xia Mingtang trembled, even using polite speech.
She tried to pull her foot back, but Qin Yan held it in place.
“Be good. It’ll be over soon.”
Those words… were exactly what she said before every time she tormented her.
Xia Mingtang closed her eyes in despair.
Qin Yan glanced at her little fox, who was leaning against the sofa, cheeks flushed.
She restrained herself with great effort, focusing only on the swelling, massaging the blood clots away slowly.
Qin Yan had been injured many times before and was skilled at this.
Her technique and strength were precise—rarely causing pain.
But Xia Mingtang was extremely sensitive; even this little pain made her shed a few tears and cry out.
Finally, when Qin Yan stopped, Xia Mingtang opened her eyes, looking pitiful with tears on her lashes.
“Is it done?”
Qin Yan’s fingers glided delicately over the ankle, gauging her reaction. “Massage is done. Let me give you an ice pack.”
The RV was fully equipped. Qin Yan quickly got an ice pack from the fridge.
She placed the swollen foot on her lap again, moving the ice pack evenly.
Xia Mingtang was initially chilled, then gradually felt the pain lessen.
The bright light in the RV highlighted Qin Yan’s jade-like face, elegant and gentle.
Watching her focus silently, Xia Mingtang felt a mix of emotions.
Qin Yan, when not “perverse,” was an excellent person.
Otherwise, back in Yun Town, Xia Mingtang wouldn’t have wanted to stay at the inn just to charm her.
But…
She wished Qin Yan could remain normal.
Fifteen minutes of icing passed, and Qin Yan set the ice pack aside, bringing a basin of water.
“No more bathing today. Just soak your foot, then apply the ointment.”
Xia Mingtang nodded obediently. She had been pampered all her life, and even after marriage, she often gave instructions to Qin Yan.
Now, for some reason, she didn’t want Qin Yan to continue caring for her.
“I can handle it myself from here.” She looked at Qin Yan, voice slightly trembling.
Qin Yan stared for several seconds but didn’t argue, simply placing the towel and ointment nearby.
She turned and left the living area.
Xia Mingtang soaked her feet in water, watching Qin Yan leave, finally exhaling.
Every time she was too close to that person, she felt an inexplicable fear—afraid Qin Yan might lose control or, conversely, be too gentle.
It was a strange feeling.
Xia Mingtang had never lacked people who treated her well. She knew how to return kindness.
But now, facing Qin Yan’s extreme mix of indulgence and obsession, she was intimidated.
Qin Yan’s kindness always came with a price.
If the other person were truly evil, Xia Mingtang’s status and temper would prevent her from suffering any grievance.
Yet Qin Yan alternated between angering her and showering her with kindness, all with a stunning face.
Sigh~
Xia Mingtang wiped the water from her feet, applied ointment herself. Qin Yan’s massage had been effective; the pain was gone.
She slipped on clean slippers and stood with a limp.
She wanted to wash her hands, but heard the sound of running water—Qin Yan was showering.
Xia Mingtang’s ears flushed. She turned to the kitchen to wash up, the sound of water hitting Qin Yan’s bare skin clearly audible through the frosted door.
She imagined Qin Yan’s nude figure and nervously swallowed.
Had she been “infected” by this perversion?
Shaking her head, she tried to rid her mind of these thoughts.
The RV felt stuffy at night, so she stepped outside, limping slightly.
Stars filled the sky. Xia Mingtang looked up to see a large star and a small star shining closely together.
The legend of the symbiotic stars—just a joke she had made long ago—had grown into today’s complicated reality.
She stood, overwhelmed with emotion, staring at the sky.
“Ah-choo!”
The mountain night wasn’t suited for delicate, melancholic feelings. Xia Mingtang’s slight exposure to the wind gave her a runny nose.
She hurried back into the tent to grab tissues.
After ventilating, the tent’s smell had mostly disappeared.
She closed the curtains and sat on the blanket in her sleeping bag, lost in thought.
Her eyes fell on the bright floor mirror beside her, frowning.
The mirror seemed to remind her of the recent messy memories.
Her temper flared. Limping forward, she tried to move the heavy full-length mirror out of the way.
Unable to lift it, she instead covered it with a blanket.
“What are you doing, Tang Tang?”
Qin Yan appeared unexpectedly.
“I don’t want to see this mirror. I can’t sleep with it here.”
Qin Yan glanced at the mirror, a bit regretful. She liked it.
But now it was better not to anger her little fox. She turned the mirror outward instead.
“Better?”
Slightly appeased, Xia Mingtang threw the blanket back and curled up to sleep.
Previously, Qin Yan had mischievously tormented her in the other sleeping bag, now moved aside.
Seeing Xia Mingtang’s unwillingness, Qin Yan shamelessly crawled in as well.
Her warm body pressed against Xia Mingtang’s.
“This sleeping bag is just for one. Go sleep in the RV.”
Her tone was firm but lacked confidence.
Qin Yan said nothing, leaned over, kissed her earlobe, and began unbuttoning her pajamas.
Xia Mingtang pressed down on the hand at her chest, turned, and in the dim light, met Qin Yan’s eyes.
