- Chapter 59 - It’s So Late, Tang Tang, You Went for a Walk Without Telling Me?
When Xia Mingtang woke up, the tent was already under a sky full of stars.
She propped herself up in her sleeping bag, her body aching as if it had been run over by a truck.
Qin Yan had already helped her clean up, but the red marks all over her body were difficult to disappear quickly.
She turned slightly and caught a glimpse of herself in the full-length mirror, her entire body flushed red.
The platinum birdcage necklace hung over her chest, red and white interwoven, glinting faintly.
Under the LED lights, it gave off a slightly sensual, decadent aura.
She quickly turned away, unwilling to look any longer.
Nearby, a neatly stacked pile of clean clothes lay on the ground.
She grabbed them roughly and put them on haphazardly.
Hours had passed, yet the tent was still filled with a lingering atmosphere of intimacy.
Now, just the smell of it would immediately remind her of the humiliation and chaos from a few hours ago.
She couldn’t stand a second longer in this place!
The tent curtain was slightly pulled aside, just enough to see Qin Yan not far off, preparing barbecue.
Xia Mingtang was hungry but didn’t intend to approach for food.
She quickly combed her hair, took her phone, and quietly stepped outside the tent.
Qin Yan was carefully grilling vegetables and meat on the charcoal rack, producing a sizzling sound.
For a moment, she didn’t notice that the little fox who was supposed to be sleeping in the tent had quietly slipped away.
The night on the mountain was quiet, with only occasional bird calls and the wind’s whistle.
Xia Mingtang walked down the mountain path. At this point, she wasn’t afraid of any wild animals—nothing could be scarier than the “Qin beast” beside her.
She was foolish to be deceived over and over again by that gentle, pure façade, previously believing that the person genuinely wanted to curb her controlling tendencies.
But it was all a façade. She was a pervert, a lunatic!
Xia Mingtang’s steps were hurried; she just wanted to get as far away as possible.
She had done some homework before coming, knowing that halfway up the mountain there were several native inns, and maybe even a hot spring hotel.
She didn’t care now; she would go wherever there was light, stay wherever there was a house, and then return home tomorrow.
The mountain path was long, and Xia Mingtang’s legs soon went weak.
A pampered young lady, she couldn’t handle the exhaustion. She found a rock to sit on temporarily and mentally cursed the one who had worn her out.
Once the temper flared, her blame was indiscriminate.
Even Ji Xianglan, the first to have a marriage contract with her, didn’t escape her scolding.
If it weren’t for Ji Xianglan, she wouldn’t have been forced into an engagement.
If there was no engagement, she wouldn’t have needed to hide in Yun Town.
If she hadn’t gone to Yun Town, she wouldn’t have met Qin Yan, wouldn’t have married.
And if she hadn’t married, she wouldn’t have been treated so terribly today.
In short…
Not a single person in the Ji family was any good!
At that moment, a woman in a camel-colored trench coat sneezed loudly while walking up the mountain path.
The noise was too obvious, startling Xia Mingtang to look up.
“Ji Xianglan?!” What a coincidence.
“Xia Mingtang?” The surprise on her face was no less than hers.
Though Xia Mingtang had been married to Qin Yan for several days, Ji Xianglan had never addressed her according to rank.
If it were before, Xia Mingtang might have teased her a little, gaining a trivial advantage in seniority.
Now, she had no such mood.
Xia Mingtang seemed calmer than usual, which made Ji Xianglan seem even more talkative.
“You’re here…” Ji Xianglan looked up at the mountain peak while speaking, a smile on her face.
“The whole top of Cangcui Mountain is booked, no one else is allowed—originally I wondered who had such power, turns out it’s my resourceful little aunt.”
Xia Mingtang didn’t want to discuss anything related to Qin Yan, so she deliberately changed the topic.
“It’s so late, what are you doing here?”
“Me?” Ji Xianglan shrugged, carefree.
“Just sightseeing. The Ji Group has nothing for me right now, so I’m free as a bird. Who knew I’d run into someone while coming up here?”
Xia Mingtang: …
Every word seemed to poke at her.
She doubted the credibility of Ji Xianglan’s explanation but felt a twinge of guilt regarding the Ji Group.
Back then, she only sought her own freedom, disregarding the fact that the Ji Group was also Ji Xianglan’s years of hard work.
Now, switched places…
“Sorry, I schemed against you for so long, but it wasn’t personal.” Xia Mingtang spoke with a trace of sincerity.
“Oh, that was just internal family fighting. What does it have to do with you?” Ji Xianglan waved dismissively, seeming genuinely unconcerned.
“Family feud?” Xia Mingtang looked puzzled.
Ji Xianglan noticed her confusion and said, “You don’t know?”
Xia Mingtang: ?
“Should I know?”
Ji Xianglan looked at her for several seconds, then sighed.
“Go ask your partner when you get back.”
She initially wanted Xia Mingtang to ask her wife directly.
But thinking that Qin Yan might have kept it from her for so long, she might not tell the truth.
Before Xia Mingtang could understand the implication, Ji Xianglan’s expression changed.
“She’s here too… truly a small world.” With that, she turned and entered the forest behind her.
Xia Mingtang looked back; the figure that had walked down from the mountaintop was disappearing into the woods.
The next second, she followed as well.
Ji Xianglan had been holding onto the trees while weaving through the forest when she suddenly realized someone had appeared beside her.
“Why are you following me?” she said, annoyed.
Xia Mingtang, struggling with balance, grabbed nearby trees, her steps faltering, but spoke confidently:
“This is the only path. You can go, but I can’t?”
Ji Xianglan silently glanced at her and then at the well-lit mountain road, kindly suggesting, “The properly paved path is over there.”
Xia Mingtang didn’t look back. “No, I want to go this way.”
Ji Xianglan couldn’t understand her panicked and reckless behavior.
“I entered the forest to avoid awkward encounters with my aunt. You two are married—why are you hiding?”
Xia Mingtang gripped the trees, stepping faster. “None of your business.”
Seeing this, Ji Xianglan stopped speaking and focused on leaving this troublesome place.
The flashlight beam behind them grew closer.
“This is strange. The forest is dense, visibility isn’t great. How did she see us and head straight here?”
Xia Mingtang, focusing on her footing, replied vaguely: “You can see her, so she can see us. Hurry up.”
The forest path was uneven; Xia Mingtang nearly slipped several times, breaking several branches.
“You have time to overthink, why not just walk faster?”
As she spoke, she demonstrated “walking faster” by example.
The next second, she slipped on a wet leaf and fell into a squat, knocking over a tree trunk and scattering leaves.
“What are you doing…” Ji Xianglan turned back, and out of human decency helped her up, then continued running.
Xia Mingtang wanted to follow but let out a painful cry.
“Ouch~”
She had twisted her ankle.
“Wait a moment!”
Seeing Ji Xianglan walking away, Xia Mingtang panicked and quickly came up with an idea.
“If you help me get out of here, I’ll give you three percent of the Ji Group shares…”
Ji Xianglan paused mid-step, seeming to hesitate.
With footsteps approaching fast, Xia Mingtang bit her teeth and added, “Five percent!”
Ji Xianglan crouched beside her.
Xia Mingtang didn’t fuss and jumped onto her shoulders.
Ji Xianglan almost fell from the sudden weight.
Luckily, she wasn’t delicate and Xia Mingtang wasn’t heavy, so she could carry her a bit.
But carrying someone slows you down compared to running freely.
The approaching footsteps made Ji Xianglan anxious.
“This won’t do. My aunt trains long-term and is very fit.”
Seeing Ji Xianglan about to put her down, Xia Mingtang hurriedly flattered her:
“You move without getting red or out of breath—truly impressive. Believe in yourself!”
Ji Xianglan, already red-faced, …
By then, the flashlight’s beam illuminated the ground beneath them.
Ji Xianglan stopped, reluctantly placed Xia Mingtang on a tree stump.
“I guess I can’t enjoy that five percent of shares for now.”
She said this and ran off in a flash.
Xia Mingtang: …
How could anyone be so unreliable!
Qin Yan, holding a flashlight, approached and watched the fleeing figure. Her face turned icy for a moment, then the coldness disappeared as she looked at Xia Mingtang sitting on the stump.
“It’s so late, Tang Tang, you went for a walk without telling me?”
She reached out, touching the little fox’s fluffy head, her voice gentle.
Xia Mingtang trembled involuntarily at the touch.
Knowing escape was impossible, she could only follow the lead:
“I thought you were busy, so I just went for a walk.”
From the mountaintop to nearly halfway down, she had even been carried through the forest.
Qin Yan didn’t expose her clumsy lie. Her jade-like fingers brushed from the top of Xia Mingtang’s head to her cheek.
“We’ve gone this far. Let’s head back. Tomorrow, wherever you want to go, I’ll go with you.”
Xia Mingtang, alone in the mountain forest, ankle sprained, had no choice but to obediently nod.
She tried to stand, but Qin Yan scooped her up horizontally.
She instinctively hugged Qin Yan’s long neck, but immediately felt awkward.
Qin Yan didn’t let go and deliberately jostled her.
Fearing a fall, Xia Mingtang clutched her tightly.
“Ankle sprained? I’ll check it when we get back.”
Soon, Qin Yan carried her out of the forest onto the well-lit mountain road.
The lamplight reflected on Xia Mingtang’s face, making her slightly embarrassed.
“Actually… there’s no need to carry me like this.”
She wanted to suggest using some tool nearby, but Qin Yan didn’t give her a chance.
“Don’t worry, I’m very strong. Unlike some people, I won’t get out of breath just from carrying you a few steps.”
Xia Mingtang: …
Did she just see that?
