- Chapter 14 - Sister, is my flexibility alright?
The story continues with Xia Mingtang, a lively character, and Qin Yan, who is typically quiet and reserved.
Qin Yan, usually known for her tranquil demeanor, gives Xia Mingtang a mysterious look that Xia Mingtang can’t quite decipher. Feeling a little awkward, Xia Mingtang asks, “Sister, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” Qin Yan replies, quickly returning to her usual calm self. “You mentioned wanting to learn kung fu. I can teach you.”
Xia Mingtang is overjoyed. She eagerly clings to Qin Yan’s sleeve, afraid the offer will be withdrawn. “You can’t go back on your word, Sister! I want to learn that move you used earlier—the one where you ducked down. ‘Hi!’ ‘Ho!'” She excitedly imitates the move, almost losing her balance.
With a gentle smile, Qin Yan says, “I won’t. I just hope you won’t back out.” Xia Mingtang immediately promises she won’t and shows her determination to learn.
“The move you want to learn requires strong abs and back muscles to stabilize your body, with your leg muscles providing support. It demands a lot of flexibility and balance. So, how about a quick fitness test?” Qin Yan proposes.
Xia Mingtang, a go-getter, accepts the challenge. “Just tell me what to do!”
Five minutes later, Xia Mingtang is sitting on a mat, legs straight, trying to touch her toes. Her body is trembling all over. “S-s-sister, is my flexibility… okay?”
Qin Yan walks around her, observing the shaking body. “It’s a little far off,” she says, offering a blunt but honest assessment.
Disheartened, Xia Mingtang slumps onto the mat. Qin Yan kneels down and pats her head, comforting her. “It’s okay. We can start with the basics.”
This is where the “devil training” begins. Qin Yan has Xia Mingtang perform static stretches. For a girl who isn’t very athletic, it doesn’t take long for her to start sweating profusely. Qin Yan, a supervisor now, is strict and meticulous. “Straighten your legs, stop shaking.” “Tuck your stomach in, don’t slouch.” “Keep your arms up. Why did you put them down?”
After about 15 minutes, Xia Mingtang, exhausted, sneaks away to the mat to rest.
Qin Yan turns around and sees her lying on the mat, looking like a “tired little fox.” She chuckles, “Tired?” Xia Mingtang nods frantically, hoping for a break.
“Alright, let’s take a three-minute break,” Qin Yan says, being surprisingly understanding. “Then we’ll switch to some other exercises.”
Xia Mingtang is shocked. Three minutes? Is she serious?
Qin Yan’s hands move from Xia Mingtang’s back to her waist, and she presses down, making Xia Mingtang yelp. “Your muscles here are a bit stiff. Were you breathing like I told you to?”
Xia Mingtang, in pain, protects her waist, wondering if her laziness has been exposed. Without waiting for a response, Qin Yan measures her waist with her hands and concludes, “Your foundation is pretty weak. We’ll need to increase your training volume.”
Increase it?! Xia Mingtang is stunned. “Sister,” she stammers, “maybe I should learn something else?”
Qin Yan pauses for a moment, then gently pats Xia Mingtang’s bare waist. “I think you need to work on your waist a bit more.” Before Xia Mingtang can object further, Qin Yan pulls her up from the mat. “Alright, three minutes are up.”
Xia Mingtang is on the verge of tears, experiencing her first “devil training” session. To make matters worse, she asked for this herself. She can’t muster the courage to object to Qin Yan’s gentle but firm demeanor.
The training lasts for over an hour. Just as Xia Mingtang is about to burst into tears, Qin Yan finally says, “It’s getting late. That’s enough for today. Get some rest. We’ll continue tomorrow.”
Tomorrow?! Xia Mingtang is shocked.
The next morning, Xia Mingtang hides on her room’s sofa, secretly eating a biscuit. Her ears are perked up, listening for any sound from outside.
When someone knocks on the door, she quickly hides the biscuit under a cushion and feebly asks, “Who is it?”
“It’s Yi Yi, housekeeping,” a voice replies.
Relieved, Xia Mingtang tells her to come back in a few days. But Yi Yi insists on changing the bedsheet. Xia Mingtang opens the door for her, and sees Qin Yan standing outside as well.
Qin Yan is wearing a light blue casual outfit and a sheer jacket. Her hair is pulled up, making her look elegant and vibrant. Xia Mingtang, for a moment, is entranced, but then she remembers last night’s “torture.”
“Did you rest well last night, little fox?” Qin Yan asks with a sweet smile. Xia Mingtang, understanding the hidden meaning, coughs and tries to feign illness. “Sister, I don’t feel well. I have no energy at all.”
Yi Yi, witnessing Xia Mingtang’s exaggerated performance, leaves the room, a picture of indifference. Qin Yan, on the other hand, seems more compassionate. She places the back of her hand on Xia Mingtang’s forehead. “Little fox, did you catch a cold? You feel a bit warm.”
Xia Mingtang nods, her eyes red, trying to look pitiful. “Yes, I didn’t cover myself well last night. I’ll be fine in a few days. You go on and do your own thing, Sister.”
Qin Yan gently pats her cheek, looking both sympathetic and regretful. “Poor thing. What a shame. I was planning to take you to the West Suburb Park today. There’s a cultural heritage exhibition and an ecological zone where you can see golden snub-nosed monkeys. They are very smart and can understand people.”
Xia Mingtang, who loves animals, instantly perks up. “Can we feed the monkeys?”
“Yes, as long as you buy food from the park.”
“Then what are we waiting for? Let’s go now!” Xia Mingtang is ready to leave, but Qin Yan doesn’t move. “But you’re not feeling well. We can go another time.”
“Oh, how strange, I suddenly feel much better now!” Xia Mingtang says, jumping around to prove she’s full of energy.
“Alright, then let’s go get a few things from the lobby first.”
The “few things” turn out to be a large bag full of stretching bands, electrolyte drinks, and other training equipment. Xia Mingtang looks at the bag with suspicion. “Sister, aren’t we going to see the monkeys? Why do we need all this stuff?”
“Just in case,” Qin Yan replies. “You never know when it might come in handy.”
