- Chapter 13 - It's You Who Provokes Me Again and Again
“The motherboard is broken. I have to go to the next town to get a replacement. You guys can come back in two days to pick it up.” The owner of the digital store opened the recently “sacrificed” phone, observed it for a moment, and came to a conclusion.
Qin Yan nodded. As she was leaving the store, she suddenly thought of something and turned to look at Xia Mingtang, “Xiaohua, lend me your phone.”
Xia Mingtang didn’t know why, but obediently handed over her phone.
Qin Yan took it and quickly dialed a familiar number. The call connected, and as soon as she said “Hello,” Xie An on the other end started chattering nonstop.
Qin Yan rubbed her slightly tired ears and looked at the curious Xia Mingtang next to her, letting her mind wander. Fortunately, these two weren’t in the same scene, otherwise they’d be as noisy as 800 sparrows.
The previous call had been cut off abruptly. If it weren’t for a certain someone next to her being so noisy all the way, she would have called back sooner.
After waiting for the other side to finally quiet down, Qin Yan spoke unhurriedly.
“It’s nothing, my phone just broke.”
“It’s being repaired. I’m outside right now, so I’ll talk to you later.”
Qin Yan was always concise when talking on the phone, but Xia Mingtang was able to deduce from these two sentences that the person on the other end of the line must have a close relationship with Qin Yan.
A few minutes later, Qin Yan handed the phone back to her, as if anticipating her question, and voluntarily answered, “A friend.”
That was as good as saying nothing.
The two had dinner and returned to the inn, each to their own room. Xia Mingtang immediately sent a message to Anran.
[Anran, could you please help me find out who is behind this number? I suspect it’s related to the Ji family. The number is 13565321748.]
Anran didn’t reply to her message right away, but Xia Mingtang wasn’t in a hurry. She was bored and started playing a match-three game on her phone.
It was a simple game of matching blocks of the same color, but because she was a little distracted, she even got stuck on the first level.
Xia Mingtang exited the game and sighed, “Sister, I’m sorry. You say I’m an airhead, but I think you’re the one who is.”
After a few days of getting along, she owed Qin Yan a lot. Now, engaging in a little behind-the-scenes maneuvering, she felt a little guilty.
I just want to get information and fight for my freedom. I won’t hurt her.
Xia Mingtang comforted herself in her heart.
She glanced at the time on her phone. It was already past nine in the evening, and another day was about to end.
She felt like her days in Yuntown were numbered, even though she hadn’t been here for many days. She was already starting to feel reluctant to leave.
She hadn’t even learned any martial arts from Qin Yan yet.
That’s right, martial arts!
Xia Mingtang’s eyes suddenly lit up, and she sat up straight.
How could she let such a powerful teacher go so easily when she was right beside her!
Qin Yan probably wasn’t resting yet. I’ll go find her now!
With a legitimate motive, Xia Mingtang’s actions were super-fast. In just a few minutes, she tidied herself up and arrived at Qin Yan’s door.
She knocked, but no one answered. Instead, she ran into Yiyi, who was passing by.
Yiyi saw this guest who had been attached to the boss like a tail ever since she moved into the inn, and seemed to be used to it by now.
Under Xia Mingtang’s questioning, she could only answer, “The boss just went to the top-floor balcony. She’s not in a good mood, so you…”
“Thanks!” Xia Mingtang got her answer and ran like the wind.
Only Yiyi remained, with the second half of her sentence still left unsaid: …don’t bother her.
The nights in Yuntown were exceptionally cool. The top-floor balcony was open on all four sides, and being there made one’s mind clear.
Qin Yan sat on the railing of the balcony, gazing at the distant houses and tiled roofs, thinking back to her completely different state of mind when she first arrived here.
This place was too leisurely and peaceful. If she got used to it, she might forget the turmoil of the outside world.
If Xie An hadn’t called her in time today, she might not have reacted as quickly.
Qin Yan finished sending a few emails on her tablet and suddenly felt a little weary. She didn’t want to go back and face those faces full of hidden malice.
The faces she had seen since childhood flashed through her mind like a slideshow, most of them carrying unpleasant memories.
She reached up to rub her temples, trying to drive away those memories, and leaned her body slightly while holding the railing with one hand.
When Xia Mingtang arrived at the balcony, she saw Qin Yan propping herself up on the railing with one hand, looking as if she was about to jump.
“Sister, don’t do it!”
Before she could finish her thought, Xia Mingtang lunged forward, grabbed Qin Yan’s arm, and pulled her and her tablet down to the ground.
“Xia-oh-hua!” Qin Yan, who had inexplicably fallen flat on her face, didn’t get angry right away due to her good upbringing, but the three words were almost gritted out through her teeth.
Xia Mingtang, who also fell hard, sat up from the ground, grimacing. She didn’t forget to pull Qin Yan up at the same time and started talking like a machine gun.
“Sister, where there’s life, there’s hope. Even if you’re unhappy about something, don’t do anything rash. If you jump, what about the inn, what about Yiyi, what about Dahei…”
Qin Yan, who was dizzy from the fall, covered the chattering mouth with one hand and finally got a chance to speak, saying helplessly, “I wasn’t trying to jump.”
“Hmm?” Xia Mingtang, whose mouth was covered, asked through Qin Yan’s palm, “Then why were you climbing the railing?”
The soft, wet rubbing on her palm made Qin Yan freeze for a few seconds, and her anger suddenly dissipated.
“I just wanted to sit here and enjoy the breeze,” she said, moving her hand away and looking at the girl in front of her with the bewildered look of a silly fox cub.
“Ahaha, my mistake, my mistake. Sister, you sit.” Xia Mingtang, realizing her mistake, awkwardly helped Qin Yan up from the ground and tried to put her back in her original spot.
She used a little too much force, and Qin Yan stumbled as she stood up, almost losing her grip on the railing.
Qin Yan: “…”
“Don’t actually push me down.”
Qin Yan steadied herself against the railing and saw Xia Mingtang also climbing up, deliberately keeping some distance from her.
Xia Mingtang, having made consecutive mistakes, was now unusually well-behaved. She was uncharacteristically quiet, sitting obediently to the side and looking up at the stars, just like Qin Yan.
The night in Yuntown was especially cool, and with the absence of urban pollution, the stars were exceptionally bright.
Qin Yan wasn’t someone who was passionate about astronomy, but sitting under the night sky at this moment, she had a completely different state of mind than before.
She glanced out of the corner of her eye at the little girl next to her, who was shaking her head and looking around. She smiled inwardly: She really is a restless spirit.
It was strange. Even though they had a little misunderstanding, the worries in her heart had vanished a lot.
Xia Mingtang didn’t know what Qin Yan was thinking at the moment. She was a little bored and started counting the stars in the sky, but she only got halfway through before she couldn’t remember where she left off.
Seeing that Qin Yan didn’t seem to be in the mood to talk to her, she decided to take the initiative.
She discreetly scooted closer along the railing when Qin Yan wasn’t paying attention, pointed a finger at the brightest star in the sky, and made small talk.
“Sister, look at that particularly bright star over there. Is that Sirius?”
Qin Yan looked up, gave it a faint glance, and said, “That’s the Solitary Star. It’s a fragment left over from a star explosion in outer space billions of years ago. After a long period of re-formation, it became what it is now.
“It always travels alone on a specific orbit. Wherever it goes, it shines brightly, but it never intersects with any other stars, so it was named the Solitary Star.”
Xia Mingtang listened, half understanding, but didn’t forget to give a compliment. “Wow, you even know about such an obscure star. Sister, you’re so amazing! Unlike me, my head starts hurting as soon as I open an astronomy book.”
Qin Yan looked back at her and said calmly, “Actually, I don’t know anything about astronomy either.”
“Then what was that you just said?”
“I made it up,” Qin Yan said with a calm expression.
Xia Mingtang: “…”
Heh, I didn’t know Boss Qin could tell cold jokes.
Isn’t it just making things up? I can do that too!
Xia Mingtang widened her eyes, looked at the stars in the sky, wracked her brains, and refused to be outdone.
“Sister, you didn’t finish. When that star is alone, it’s the Solitary Star, but now there’s another small star next to it. Although it’s inconspicuous, it has always maintained a not-too-far-not-too-close distance from it, illuminating each other. When these two stars are together, they are called the Symbiotic Stars.”
“Symbiotic Stars?” Qin Yan looked at the little girl under the night sky, who was full of energy and gesturing with her hands.
“Yes, the Symbiotic Stars! Don’t those two stars look very similar? They seem to be on different trajectories, but in reality, they’ve never been far from each other. You are in me, and I am in you.” Xia Mingtang used the literary skills that won her awards in elementary school, and the more she spoke, the more she felt it made sense.
Under the sky, a large and a small star twinkled and complemented each other. The originally inconspicuous small star now seemed to be shining brightly. Upon closer inspection, they really did look like a pair.
The starlight fell on the little girl’s face, adorning her beautiful face with a special kind of liveliness.
For a moment, a strangely unfamiliar emotion suddenly welled up in Qin Yan’s heart.
It’s you who provokes me again and again.
